Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

4lbs of bread bloat vanished overnight! Feeling pretty hungry right now, but in 34 minutes I can have lunch, so am distracting myself on here :)

veryveryquietly · 18/07/2018 11:36

yay Kevin! Bye bye bloat!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/07/2018 17:03

Apparently for every molecule of glycogen stored in your muscles, you hold 3 molecules of water (according to the very scientific channel 4 programme i watched the other day), so that’s why the bread bloat goes overnight, if you cut the carbs low enough. I lose about 2-3lb on a 10 km run if I run before eating because of using up the stored glycogen and the additional water (it goes back on though once I drink and eat) That’s also why 4lb of bread bloat can go on overnight too!

I should just add, I’m not discrediting your 4lb loss btw, just explaining why. One of the things people say about crash diets is ‘it’s all water and it will go back on as soon as you drink’ but actually I disagree that that’s s bad thing- I think those 4lb of water (or however many) can be what makes your clothes uncomfortable, or your hands puffy or whatever, and it’s still got to go before you can lose any fat!!

Closing the kitchen on 1100 cals, 43g carbs, 20k steps (6km run, plus I did 20 minutes of Jillian Michaels this afternoon). So not the 800 cal day I hoped for, but that’s still ok.

It’s my big weigh in tomorrow morning, I’m surprisingly keen to get on the scales! Then tomorrow I’ll be having wine and dessert as it’s my birthday (but good should be ok and on plan as I’m cooking!) and Saturday we’re out for a meal but it’s tapas so will be able to select BSD friendly options. It’s funny, I’d sort of promised myself a mega blow out this weekend if I wanted it- but I Don’t really want it! So I’ll try and keep to the basics as much as possible to limit the damage. I still fully intend to be at target by the time we go away!

Hello all & newbies! Just a quick check in from holidays... still eating all the wrong foods (bread, plantain, papaya, rice PLUS b’fast every day and drinking beer during day & wine at night!!) Shorts definitely getting tighter so will have to be super strict on return to uk on Sunday. Hate to think what I’ve put on but keep thinking I’ll still be lighter than I would have been if I’d not lost the stone prior. It’s made me realise how hard this is away from home (unless self catering). Also how much of a lifestyle change this is. I have made some good choices here but also a lot of poor ones. My DH is the worst influence too!

Snowglobes · 18/07/2018 20:27

Happy Birthday for tomorrow bear!!!

veryveryquietly · 18/07/2018 20:28

Happy birthday a bit early bear and glad your holidays are going well snowglobes - sounds fun

OK day today: 931 cals, 38 gr carbs. Still need to get back under 900 cal per day, but it could be worse.

Good evening to you all!

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 18/07/2018 20:39

Thanks, bear - yes, I used to do the Harcombe Diet (works beautifully for me, but as soon as I go into Phase 3, it goes straight back on), and she makes that point about the glycogen.

777 calories today, 7g of carbs. Could kill DH, who decided he was having a curry tonight and came back with extra chicken pakora ("it's chicken, you can eat that, can't you?"). I don't know quite how I've found the willpower not to eat any, but the leftovers from what DH has eaten are sitting on the side cooling before going into the fridge for DH's lunch tomorrow.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/07/2018 20:47

7g carbs???? Is that a typo or correct? You can eat more carbs than that if you want to Kevin, and you’ll still see good losses but with less urge to murder everyone. As a general rule people aim for around 50g a day but it’s not written into the plan. The key is to restrict the big white carbs that mess with your blood sugars, and to limit the amount of carbs by simply eating much less food. If you’re managing on that then that’s fine, but honestly if you’re feeling like you really need some more then you can comfortably eat a bit more and you’ll still lose. I promise!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/07/2018 20:48

Plus, I would totally have eaten that pakora.....

Finishing today on 702 calories and 33.2 g of carbs.

DandelionAndBedrock · 18/07/2018 21:07

I had the pizza! It was ok, it was fine. My friend (not BSD compliant apart from when I make her!) had 2/3 of a tray of dough balls after. It didn’t taste like pizza (obviously) but it really was quite nice as just a regular meal. There was quite a lot of cheese which helped. We added some ham and pineapple to it to try and liven it up, but I think the base cooked too quickly for the cheese to bubble nicely.

Oooh pakora!!! Well done resisting! You were all talking about telling others v keeping quiet a bit ago. I’ve not told anyone. DH knows i avoid rice, pasta & potatoes anyway - have for years (mostly). My teen girls have worked it out but they’ve still been having pancakes with maple syrup for b’fast here so don’t think I’ve influenced them much (unfortunately). I don’t talk about my choices as wouldn’t want to preach. A couple of friends have mentioned that I’m looking slimmer and I’ve said I’m cutting down on sugars (and at the time, alcohol). This seems much more acceptable than saying carbs. I’d also never mention 800 cals to anyone including my daughters!
This is my first ever ‘diet’ and I wonder if any of you have tried 800 cals previously but included carbs - not necessarily bad white carbs but not carb counted. Does that make sense?

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 18/07/2018 21:51

Yes, I was surprised by 7g of carbs, but that's what My Fitness Pal is telling me. It's not put in any carbs for the green salad I had with my leftover baked chicken for supper, so I suspect it's probably higher.

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 19/07/2018 07:34

The willpower paid off, another 2lbs vanished overnight.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/07/2018 07:49

Weighed in at 10.5 which is a 5lb loss in 10 days (maybe slightly more as I had a heavy weekend after my last weigh in), although it’s still my plateau weight and no lower! Oh well, I’m not going to worry about it today, but will need to embark on a further strict week or two before holiday if I am to get under this plateau (which I have been on or near for weeks now- maybe I should just accept that this is what I weigh!)

But alas, my birthday today. Going for a day out somewhere with little Ds, family for a meal tonight (so will have a glass of wine and slice of cake!). While running this morning I was taking stock of my year so far, and comparing me now with me this time last year- I’m 30lbs lighter, 2-3 dress sizes smaller, 100x fitter! I’ve run just shy of 800 km /500 miles so far this year. Last year I chose clothes for my birthday purely to disguise my shape- this year I’ve had bright pink Lycra running leggings in a size 8. If I can do it, anyone can, and it really is amazing to me just how much my life has changed.

Go for it! Have a great day everyone!

Hello newbies - you sound like you’ve got off to a good start. I finished off yesterday at 842 cals / 58g carbs but thatbdis include 2 glasses of Rioja which didn’t mean a lot of food.

I’m having a good week so far so hoping for another good day. Trying to find some new foods/recipes to make things more interesting. I bought some Oppo ice cream yesterday for when I’m craving a treat. Supposedly low sugar and very good reviews buy had a hunt to find it. Will report later.

Would be interested to know what daily fiber count everyone has. I read somewhere that the recommended amount should be about 30g a day but I’m not getting near that. Just conscious of this after having digestive problems post pregnancy and the consultant said it was something to watch. Occasionally take psyllium husk. Have been trying to find traditional steel cut oats but may need to travel for those too.

Happy birthday Bear. Have a lovely day and enjoy the Cake and Wine

Polpette · 19/07/2018 07:52

That's an excellent loss Kevin!

Hello to all the new starters, hope you're all settling into things ok, you'll be amazed at how fast the time goes once you're used to things. The first week fogginess does pass.

I'm still plodding along with my mini plateaus followed by loses followed by gains, then loses then back to plateauing. I'm getting used to it now and knowing that loses will definitely come keeps me on track.

I'm near the end of the eight weeks and will most likely end up at one and a half stone down (unless there's a sudden whoosh?!). I'll be carrying on for longer though as I see no reason to stop, this way of eating has become second nature.

Polpette · 19/07/2018 07:54

Happy Birthday Bear! That 5lb loss is amazing, well done. Enjoy your birthday and start chipping away at that plateau another day.

Polpette · 19/07/2018 07:59

Seasidedreamer I've just had a look at my MFP averages and my fibre is terrible!!! I seem to be averaging about 10g a day. Oops! How did I miss this? Thanks for pointing it out. If anyone has good ideas for increasing it I'd be grateful.

Oblomov18 · 19/07/2018 08:15

Dandelion, I really like the look of that Bear-Asda pizza. I think this could be good for me, us as a family, meal wise.

I have put on 4lbs. No surprise really with the amount of wine and crisps I've been eating recently.

I need to pack, we are off to our Dorset caravan for 2 weeks.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/07/2018 08:27

You’re supposed to get around 14g fibre per 1000 calories of food, so 30g makes sense for a normal food intake. I suppose 10g is a suitable estimate. Some low carb dieters don’t count grams of fibre in their carb totals, however, proceed with caution doing that as we have previously found that some food manufacturers already deduct the fibre grams from their carb totals (meaning you could deduct them twice in theory and eat more than you think) - and there’s no way to tell if they have done this, or any set guidelines about it. Bear in mind that we don’t need to count carbs on this plan. So if you need more fibre, have it- but choose BSD friendly sources, eat it with fat, eat it whole- and you should be ok, even if that means your carb count is higher than normal.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes!

Thanks Bear. My silence on thread tells you everything you need to know about my compliance to BSD at the minute! 🙈 We are about to head away for nearly 3 weeks on and off and will be camping and in a hotel. I'm so worried I'm going to gain it all back but being ridiculously passive about it!

ponygirlcurtis · 19/07/2018 13:35

Happy birthday bear - hope you are having a good day.

My BSD recipe book is winging its way to me today, looking forward to reading it.
