Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Amazing I read a strategy somewhere about bingeing where it was basically to take a photo on your phone of the binge food, but not eat it, and then later on when you’re feeling calmer to look at the photo and visualise how you’d have felt if you had eaten it, and compare that with how positive you feel that you hadn’t eaten it. I know that I woke up this morning with a spring in my step because I know I stuck to it yesterday (and if I’m truly honest with myself, i tend to have Friday/sat/sun weekends - that’s half the week!) and I feel more determined to do it today as well!

I’ve done a lot of work with drug addicts over the years in the prison service, and the relapse cycle is a form of self control. So:
We kick our ‘habit’ but then the reality of forever without our crutch is frightening and unknown. So we create a persona for ourselves- ‘I’m Bear, and I can’t live without chocolate/wine/ crisps etc’ and relapse. (Anyone who’s ever attended a slimming world group will know that the entire diet is based around the fact that dieters believe they need unlimited food, large portions, daily treats to ‘cope’ on a diet)
We then go; ‘See, I was right- the future isn’t so scary and unknown now- I do know the truth, I do know how to predict my own behaviour’. We trust our relapse response far more than we trust ourselves to say no. It’s our comfort zone. Stepping out of it can feel very, very unsettling, and forever seems like a long time. I totally agree with the fact that this diet is a learning curve, firstly with the actual food we eat which turns our diet knowledge on its head, but more importantly, with all this psychological stuff we learn about ourselves along the way. That’s why I love our little community on here because even after 2 years I’m still learning and still thinking about it in new ways

That’s fascinating bear and makes a lot of sense.

abitoflight · 14/07/2018 09:40

Averagebear - thanks for idea of Young's gastro fish dishes - I an in need of something fast and tasty from freezer
No losses here but maintaining about 3-4lbs above target. Not been counting calories as pointless with beers for World Cup and meals out on short breaks
Other than beer, I've stuck to Mediterranean Diet
I think a couple of on plan weeks should shift some weight before holiday at end of July

Bollard · 14/07/2018 11:24

May I join this group please? I’m on my final day of the 8 week BSD. I didn’t weigh myself till week 2 and haven’t done any measuring. I reckon I’ve lost about 10kg and my BMI is 24.5, so I’m pleased with that. However, I’ve been on a plateau for about 10 days which is very disheartening. I’ve had shocking PMT and my period is due any day now. Any advice? Carry on with 800 cals a day till I get a whoosh? Go straight onto 5:2?
Thanks Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/07/2018 14:54

Hi Bollard and welcome! If it were me in your position I would go for a Med style, ‘increase calories but watch the carbs’ plan for a few days to see me through the PMT; I find once I’ve come on I drop a lot of water, and usually have my best week of the monthly cycle as my cravings go away and my appetite goes back to normal, so capitalise on that and do a good week of 800 calories days to get you through the plateau to the end of the 8 weeks. Then adopt the 5:2 way? I do most of my months weightloss in those 10 days after I come on then the rest is mostly maintaining what I’ve lost and damage limitations when I’m due on again!

Bollard · 14/07/2018 16:08

Thank you Bear, that’s really helpful. I’ll do that. I’m eating All The Food right now, but have swapped my weakness for chocolate and bagels for Greek yoghurt and tahini! I’ve just finished all the yoghurt and moved onto the ham. So at least it’s on-plan food, even if far too much of it.
Once I come on I can do a really good week of 800cals a day and hopefully get through this plateau, then move onto 5:2.
It’s horrid, after feeling so good and I’m control, to feel ravenous, lardy and bloated.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/07/2018 19:02

Ooooh I’ve just eaten so much meat!! Really nice bbq food, ribs, salad, tiny bit of jack Daniels bbq sauce, and it was delicious- but mega calories probably. Although, I haven’t snacked at all today (eggs for brunch and that’s been it) so hopefully will balance out. Going to try like last night and not eat anything more (plus I really Don’t need to, I’m stuffed!)

I had a takeaway with family tonight. Decided I could allow myself a treat meal after nearly 4 weeks on plan. I ordered fish and chips and it just didn't appeal at all, I only ate about half my fish. I really think my tastebuds are changing, as is my overall hunger / satisfaction levels.

ChocEggNoThanks · 15/07/2018 09:42

Excellent post about addiction Bear - thanks, I love all the insights on here.

My eating is out of control at the minute. So many visitors, meals out, tempting snack foods. But hoping to just minimise the damage until Tuesday and then have a few really good days before the next challenge- heading off camping!

Seasidedreamer · 15/07/2018 09:57

Morning everyone, so I'm 4 weeks in as of today and had planned to step on the scales. Have decided not to though. I know I am losing weight but probably not as much as I would like so instead of being disappointed or demoralised with a number I'm just going to keep going. We're off for our family holiday in 10 days - only the south coast/self catering so again that should be fairly manageable but going to try and be super vigilent before I go and then weigh in once the 8 weeks are up. After 30 years of yo-yo dieting I wanted this diet to be different as I'm heading towards 50 and want to enter that decade fit and foxy not fat and frumpy Grin

One thing I meant to ask everyone is who out of family/friends have you told? I have mentioned to only a couple of close friends, DH obv knows and I desperately try and be a 'normal eater' in front of my 2 DD's aged 12/10. One is like a hawk though and doesn't miss a trick but I really don't want to introduce them into the world of dieting and always refer to healthy eating in front of them. Otherwise I don't think anyone else has noticed!

So far I have managed to restrain myself from having a major blowout but I know it will come so there were some really interesting comments about that yesterday. This little group is so much help and thank you again for all the posts, it's keeping me going. Bear I continue to be amazed by the amount of running etc, seriously impressive especially in this heat. Wishing everyone a good day...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/07/2018 10:06

Morning all. I have been pretty good this weekend so far; in fact it’s probably the first weekend in a long time where I haven’t pretty much undone all my worn from the week. I still haven’t weighed myself, although have been very tempted. I haven’t been a total angel but I’ve really tried to keep my head focussed, so: no snacks (it’s been very apparent how much I graze on the weekends, since I haven’t done it!), I’ve carried on weighing my food and my gin measures etc, and have written everything down. These are usually the first things that go right out the window. The other thing is that usually Thursday we have wine, which means Friday day is basically a weekend day too, and that’s got to stop as well. It’s really interesting to look at it from a position of calm and see big glaringly obvious things that I had seen but not noticed! I’ve felt the benefit of not having heavy red wine too.

I’ve run this morning, and will aim to run again in the mornings this week, plus ideally get 4 days in at 800-1000 cals before my birthday weigh in on Thursday!

Food today is a bit of a mix n match as I want to get some half finished things used up from the freezer, so probably various fish things and salad!

Morning everyone! I’ve been away this weekend with DP for a wedding which we are turning into a long weekend so will have missed Friday and Saturday’s gym classes, and both my Monday sessions. Expecting a v slow week for that alone, which is frustrating. I did manage to go for a swim in the pool yesterday before everything kicked off, and did a fairly lazy 40 lengths.

There were scallops for canapés last night which were yummy, and the food was relatively ok (broke my heart not to eat the potato dauphinois though!). Too much wine and a couple of gins, but overall not too bad because I stuck to water once dancing had started (and got through about 2 bottles during the meal). Ordered poached eggs for breakfast but they never came so I caved and had Greek yoghurt (good), then sausages and mushrooms from the buffet.

onanothertrain · 15/07/2018 14:41

Hi all, could I join please. Tomorrow is the start of week 2. I've averaging 40g of carbs a day and 750-800 cals. I don't really feel hungry anymore and the headache and feeling of dehydration has passed.
I'm vegetarian and worry that I'll get bored eating the same things.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/07/2018 15:11

Welcome onanothertrain. I find I get bored of my lunches, I always have salad (I do love salad though) so I try to mix them up (so for example not having all the salad items with each one- I’ll do a cheese and beetroot salad one day, a tomato and basil another, and so on. Helps with a bit of variety. It is tougher for veggies but not impossible, do you eat eggs? Fish?

OP posts:
onanothertrain · 15/07/2018 15:30

I do eat eggs, no fish though. It's been salads all this week - egg, cheese, quorn bits. Hoping I can figure out some low carb soups for when it's a bit cooler. Missing fruit though but still having frozen berries and melon. Have decided to get week 2 finished and then I'll get back to 30 day shred and hopefully running...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/07/2018 18:14

Gone rather a lot over on calories today because I’ve eaten HUGE meals! Ending the day around 1800 cals, which is still under tdee but only just, 15k steps (6km run) and quite optimistic for the week ahead.

Oblomov18 · 15/07/2018 18:33

Glad you've had such a fab holiday Snow.
Avon, Bear puts it so well. We all struggle and have demons and engrained 'mind games', but we are constantly learning.

I feel very large and bloated atm, although I haven't actually put on any lb's.
I will try hard this coming week.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/07/2018 08:08

Ok so I wasn’t going to weigh myself, but in the end I have, although I weighed** after drinking a pint of water so it wasn’t a ‘true’ record (on purpose). I realise that this makes me sound absolutely bat shit crazy. But I luffs my scales and couldn’t start the week without checking in.

On 7th July I was 10.6 (according to my post on here!), by Sunday was 10.10, then last Monday I didn’t weigh myself (due to carb shame)- well this morning, I’m back to 10.6. So.... total loss of maybe 4+ this week, but actually zero if I look at the overall loss. I’ve been 10.5-10.8 literally for weeks now, this is clearly a hurdle for me to jump.

However, had my best weekend in a while with regards to off plan foods (as in, I’ve had none) and wine (also none) and although I’ve eaten massive meals I haven’t snacked.
I’m going to aim for a few days at 800 to try to get over this plateau but try to get the carbs lower too for a day or two just to see if that’s the push I need.

It’s also my last week of peace before taking on my summer job of refereeing wrestling matches between small children. Mixture of excitement and dread for the upcoming holidays!

OP posts:
ponygirlcurtis · 16/07/2018 11:01

Well done bear. I am back down a bit from my holiday gain too, will keep going till I am back to where I was then pick it up again from there.

Seaside I haven't particularly told anyone or particularly hidden it. A couple of people at work were doing it so I have chatted a bit with them about it, and I have talked to other friends about doing it - not all though, some I have deliberately not mentioned it. And I did put the book out of sight when my mum came round as she's funny about stuff like that and I couldn't be bothered getting into it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/07/2018 11:28

Seaside i told everyone that myself and the children were sugar free when I started in January. I got lots of worried looks and people idiots asking about various foods, but I just very firmly explained that we weren’t eating anything with sugar on the ingredients. I only explain why if they actually ask. With my very nosy in-laws this usually happens over dessert. Then I give my best mysterious smile and say ‘I won’t spoil your pudding by explaining to you....’

I don’t tell people about the 800 calories, because people think you’re anorexic. Plus, I never really stick to 800 calories anyway. And I really really bite my tongue when I hear various other diet wisdoms such as ‘I just fill up on fruit’ it’s sugar, ‘it’s got natural sugars’ yeah, it’s sugar and anyone who is joining slimming world and its ilk. In my experience, once you lose a bit of weight, no one actually wants to hear that you’ve done it by reducing calories, cutting out crap and exercising daily- and that you’ve kept it up. They like to hear about magic potions and miracle cures!!

I find I can inadvertently spoil anyone’s fun by not saying a word, just not eating certain foods- I find a lot of women in my presence say things like ‘I really shouldn’t....’ when we eat together. I don’t like that effect, but it just happens. So I only really mention it when people directly ask.

I also have a few friends who pretend that they are also sugar free, but then are always ‘having a day off today’ and order cake if we go out for coffee. I bite my tongue with those people too....it’s stupid because I really don’t care what other people eat, and I know that this just happens to be my time at the moment. I have watched lots of friends lose weight over the years and never commented.

People are really really odd about cutting out carbs and going sugar free- it’s like it provokes some strange defensive behaviour in some people. You only have to dip into the diet threads here on mumsnet to see that in action!

veryveryquietly · 16/07/2018 11:31

Urgh. Monday morning after 3+ weeks of work trips, work events that were not at all BSD friendly, visitors, and international travel. On the good side, I survived all the professional stuff ok and even hit a deadline I was very worried about. On the bad side, BSDing has gone to hell.

Well, not total hell. I tried my best to avoid all the white stuff (not easy in even buffet situations) and keep it semi-restrained on my nemesis, the evil wine bottle. Didn't track a thing. Got back, collapsed, and ended up semi-binging yesterday on things that were all BSD friendly, but not in the quantities I ate them. Am up about 4 lbs from my lowest weight about 4 weeks ago, which I suppose could be worse, but given that I still have a ways to go overall, I'm not happy.

But today is a new day. Have skipped breakfast to try to get myself on a shorter eating window, and planning a nice salad lunch or perhaps some eggs. Back on strict BSDing for the next 8 weeks. For real. I can do this, especially now that all the agents of chaos (work trips, long-haul travel, visitors) are safely behind me for a few months.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/07/2018 12:03

Oh, and thought I’d share this with you! In Asda, cauliflower crust pizza- no dough. They are £4 each and have 22g carbs for the whole pizza, about 500 cals. I didn’t buy one but I’d be very interested to hear if anyone tries one, whether they are nice.

I am going to stay with my dad this week for a few nights, his diet is very carb heavy - quiche, pasta, potatoes etc. God knows how I'm going to explain this!

DandelionAndBedrock · 16/07/2018 12:27

Bear I bought one yesterday in my local Co-op! My friend is round on Wednesday so going to try it then, will report back.

Dandelion I do hope it’s as nice as it looks!!
