Agree w/ bridget about carb content, and would agree w/ bear to say to londonista to watch portion control on the peanut butter.

Another lunch-ish or afternoon treat I often pack is a premeasured amount of hummus (20 - 30 gr or so) plus sliced cucumber for eating it. Have to premeasure and put in a tiny container, as otherwise it's very easy to eat a whole day's worth of carbs, and a half day of calories, in minutes! Prefer cucumber slices (or courgette slices) to carrots for this, as carrots are slightly higher carb. Though carrots do have that sweetness, so if you're craving sweets they're worth the carb to have.

ICJump · 29/01/2018 09:03

Word of warning don’t cook the roast chicken out of the recipe book. It is bloody delicious and you’ll end up eating two portions rather than one. 🤣

londonista · 29/01/2018 10:40

Hmm okay, good to know thanks.
I make my own hummus typically, as I'm not that keen on tahini, the taste. It's a bit of a bastardisation but I can control the fat content better.
I must portion it out though, good tip!

I bought some ham slices and am going to have 2 slices before I leave work tonight, that way hopefully I won't be too raging hungry when I walk in the door.

I weighed myself this morning and had a little cry. I'm the heaviest I've ever been without a baby in my tummy! My husband and boys are being so supportive, my husband is a vege health nut, triathalon type so can't even blame him for my current state Blush. I heard them last night unprompted clearing out all the cupboards of bad food, and my 9 year old was reading the sugar content on packets etc. I think this could be good for all of us!

Jigglytuff · 29/01/2018 11:48

Good luck londonista and congrats IC! That's tremendous

Londonista - once you get into the swing of it, it's much easier. And like Bear says, it's actually easier to do if you are really strict. Once I go off piste a bit, it takes me a good couple of days to get back on track again as I get a fuck it attitude which I find difficult to turn around Blush

I really recommend getting an electronic scale that you can put your empty plate on and then add what you're eating - makes things much faster. Once you've eaten things a few times, MFP will suggest frequently paired foods.

Bear - I often leave myself 100 cals to play with for tea and coffee and perhaps an Option or 10 cal jelly if I have an overwhelming need for sweetness (and I know you're not supposed to!)

I made a load of quorn sort of bolognese last night. Need to do some plugging of numbers into MFP which is going to be a bit tricky as I just threw things in.

I'm all about the eggs this week - I've discovered poaching them in clingfilm!

EyreOfSophistication · 29/01/2018 12:09

Marking place to catch up later.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/01/2018 13:50

Jiggly tell me more about your poached egg in clingfilm, I love poached eggs but I cannot get them right and those egg poacher cups just aren’t the same.

I’m going to follow my plan to bank some calories, although that does mean sticking to only 2 meals a day, so I’d imagine it will be a short term thing. I boosted my shake this morning with 50g avocado, and used 300ml almond milk instead of 200 ml, to make it a bit more substantial, and then I have 500 calories for dinner which should be something of a banquet with such an abundance of calories!!

I was peed off this morning, as I am back up to 12.1 which was thoroughly annoying as this is my 4 week, mid point weigh in. So total lost in January is technically just 5.5lb, although I am pretty sure I’m retaining water due to totm being imminent and also having bread yesterday. I didn’t exceed tdee yesterday, but I did eat quite a bit and the wrong things, so I guess I deserve it.

But....,the only way out is through, so I shall keep marching on!

These work brilliantly Bear! You cut out a square of clingfilm and add a little oil to stop the egg sticking (I use some in a squirt bottle and then smush the clingfilm around to coat it). Then put the film into a small cup, crack the egg into it and then use a klippit to parcel it up.

Drop the parcel into boiling water. You can pretty much see when its done but I guess it's about 4 mins? Then just undo the klippit and snip through the cling film and your perfect egg plops out!

bridgetreilly · 29/01/2018 17:04

Jigglytuff, isn't it just easier to make a normal boiled egg?

veryveryquietly · 29/01/2018 17:16

IC I'm making little Homer Simpson drooling noises at your mention of the roast chicken recipe. Hmm...will investigate recipe and try my hardest at rigid portion control.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/01/2018 17:16

Oooooh but Bridget there’s something about a proper poached egg that is just different to a boiled egg. They are probably exactly the same!! I’ve been given the tip previously to put the egg in the boiling water in its shell, just for about a minute- then take it out and crack it into the water. The pre-boiling just slightly solidifies the white so it doesn’t all just turn to threads when it goes in the water. I’ve never been bothered to try this. To be fair I’m not great at proper ‘dippy’ eggs either.

Agree with jiggly about the wonders of the electronic scale you can put your plate or bowl on. I love mine and it wasn't expensive at all, less than 10 quid from Amazon. Much easier to do proper portion control.

MonaChopsis · 29/01/2018 18:21

First day done! Scrambled eggs on half an avocado for breakfast, Greek yoghurt with walnuts and frozen raspberries for lunch, and a smoked salmon, feta and beetroot salad for dinner. Came in at 899 calories which I'm okay with, I figure it'll take a few days to get portion control a bit more under control!

bridgetreilly · 29/01/2018 19:04

Tonight's yummy dinner:

One onion, chopped and softened in olive oil.
Blob of garlic puree added to the onion.
One aubergine, chopped and added to the onion when it's softened.
One courgette, ditto.
Six tomatoes, chopped and added to the mix, when the aubergine and courgette have softened a bit.
One can of haricot beans, added with the tomatoes.
Season with salt, pepper, splash of balsamic vinegar, whatever herbs you fancy. Stick a lid on it and cook over a low heat for about twenty minutes. Sprinkle a few toasted pine nuts over before serving.

I estimate at least three generous portions.

bridgetreilly · 29/01/2018 19:04

If you have non-BSD people to feed, this would be fab with a couple of sausages and some mash.

winkywinkybumbum · 29/01/2018 19:11

Hello and well done to everyone.

That was harder than I thought today. I think I came in around 800 cals. I didn't realise how bad (so to speak) that fruit is. I did have 3 pieces in my plan for today but i took them off and went without so i could have a bigger dinner. I actually felt hunger today. Not that niggly "ooh I could just eat... " feeling. It was certainly not something i have felt properly in a long time. Hyperemesis not included. It was a good feeling as it felt like it was something I could then fix with a good dinner instead of just eating for the sake of eating.

Gosh, none of that probably makes sense to others but I know what I mean. Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/01/2018 19:11

That sounds really good Bridget and very hearty in this cold weather. Definitely sounds good with sausages!

I’m currently on 660 cals, we had tandoori chicken for tea which I had with salad (dc had with rice and corn), which means I have enough calories left for a pm snack, probably Greek yoghurt and a few berries. So it seems that, today at least, my strategy to trick myself worked! I did feel properly hungry at dinner time though, so long term that’s not sustainable, but hopefully if I can do that til Friday I’ll kick start myself a bit.

Sounds like everyone’s had a good positive day anyway.

winky I know exactly what you mean about feeling hungry. It's actually one of the things I like about BSD. You do feel hungry at first and you also start to realise when you are full and when you are over-eating.

I ate most of my calories at lunchtime today but still feel full so although it was an odd approach, it seems to have worked. I have about 60 calories left so I'm just going to have a light salad for dinner.

Thanks to whoever recommended the roast chicken recipe. I think we'll have that tomorrow.

londonista · 29/01/2018 20:37

Well annoyingly I was going well until I just totted up my calories and discovered I'd rather stupidly splashed 150 sodding calories of olive oil in the pan to fry my chicken. Careless esp after weighing everything out carefully.
So I'm on 868 cals for the day.
But actually now I don't feel too hungry which is okay, so I guess the oil helped with that.

lemonsandlimes123 · 29/01/2018 23:12

I have been trawling through all these threads as I have just started the BSD myself. Not much to add at the moment but re egg poaching, I use these which are fab!
Poachies

Jigglytuff · 29/01/2018 23:19

I’ve used those in the past but the cling film method means you don’t get any water in them (although yes it is a bit if a faff).

I got them in Lakeland and hadn’t found them elsewhere so thanks for the tip

veryveryquietly · 30/01/2018 07:29

congrats on getting through day 1 winky ! The first few days can be a bit rocky, but it does get easier.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/01/2018 09:53

Winky well done getting through day 1!

I have had something of a woosh- weighed in today at 11.11.2 which is about 4lbs overnight!!! My superstrict day appeared to have paid off!

tobee · 30/01/2018 16:25

Hello! I'm actually happy to be back on BSD! I only really missed bread oh and cake and biccies. I've not done a weigh in yet, day 4 of low carbing, but my jeans weren't biting into me last night!

bridgetreilly · 30/01/2018 18:26

I had lunch with a lovely friend who cooked roast veg with a bit of feta for me. The veg included carrot and parsnip as well as more BSD-friendly cauliflower and onions. I ate it, because she'd cooked it, and it was lovely. I really noticed that I felt much hungrier than I have been during the afternoon, from just a couple of hours after lunch, and had real cravings for more sweet things. I didn't have anything available to tempt me, though, and I've just had a much better dinner. But I was interested to see just how much of an impact even those few sweet carbs had on my appetite.

winkywinkybumbum · 30/01/2018 18:57

Thank you everyone. I am really pleased Grin.

Today has been good too. I have filled up on water and green tea am actually quite a bit under today on calories with 1 snack of boiled egg still to be eaten within those calories. Not sure if I should make the effort to eat the extra 200 calories or not. What would your advice be?
