Lasttimeround, the approach is explained in the book. Eating lower carb means you are not (usually) so hungry on those calories as you would expect. There is quite a decent amount of nice food involved. I speak as someone who's tried a 1100 calorie low fat diet in the past and got shakes and migraines with hunger halfway through the day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/03/2018 19:07

We went out into the arctic conditions today as otherwise I think someone me would have actually lost their my shit. Ended up at a local pub, crackling log fires, lovely food.....I had a half roast chicken, salad, and swapped my fries for steamed veg. No dessert. Everyone else had slabs of chocolate fudge cake and pints of peroni, I had soda water. Felt very virtuous! Actually though, it feels good. I felt very in control, I didn’t actually want the sugary stuff and the fries and the beer, but old me would have had it anyway and then would be regretting it now, and even more so on Monday morning weigh in. I’ve probably gone way over on calories, but I could have had three times that.

Tonight we were supposed to be having fish and veg, but now will postpone that and probably just do a little platter of ham and cheese and nibbly bits to have while watching Tv.
Tomorrow I’m going to try for an 800 cals day- shake, and evening meal- as the weird holiday mood will hopefully have passed.

14k steps today, including a 4km run. Not sure of calories.

And congrats rarely, that’s a great loss. Well done!

Thanks guys. Not to rub your noses in it but I’m in Oz so 35 degrees here today. Looks bloody awful over there - you have my sympathy.

Re 800 cals: I have 200 for breakfast (yogurt or eggs), 200 lunch (salad or soup) which leaves 400 for dinner. Usually works fine. I think my current struggle might be because I feel like I’m on holiday. I’ve manage to resist the communal dips/chocolate/alcohol and have managed to get by on seaweed snacks and extra yogurt. I’m probably a few hundred cals over but it’s all low carb so shouldn’t do too much harm.

Onwards and downwards ... and love the story about the falling tights :).

lasttimeround · 04/03/2018 07:55

Thanks for all the replies. I'm low carbing just now - but honestly daunted at thought of just 800. I'm going to try the odd day of it and maybe work up. Good luck all - looks like some great achievements on here

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2018 08:06

Lasttime I don’t do 800 calories and I still lose weight, usually I do a sort of 5:2 arrangement (I do plan to stick to 800 but then things just happen!)- but the few days I do stick to 800 I definitely lose weight. I suppose it depends on your tdee and how much you have to lose whether you need to do 800 calories? I think because I’ve been doing this so long now I don’t even need to think about the low carb aspect so my carbs are pretty much consistently low- for me that’s the key to 5:2 working. If I started introducing carbs as well I would probably not lose.

All that being said, this week I am having a strict week! I intended to last week, but then dc were ill, then snow, so this week I’m aiming for 5 days straight 800’s. I’m working on Tuesday and Wednesday (v unusual for me!) so that will help as I’ll be out of the house and away from the kitchen.

veryveryquietly · 04/03/2018 09:45

hey londonista and bridget hope you aren't buried under snow (or melting snow, depending)!

Ended up snacking again late last night so am definitely trying to start this week going back to basics. I need to keep the focus on good food and meals rather random crap (well, nuts and chocolate, so not totally random, but not great in large quantities) eaten randomly.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2018 10:05

Weighed in this morning at 11.5, so I’ve lost 4lb this week, (and that’s despite going out, and having wine, and not calorie counting most of the week)- I think all the snow trekking is paying off! Don’t feel like I deserve such a whopper weight loss this week but I am not complaining!

Very I definitely find that the days I graze, even within calories and carbs, are the days I feel most ‘snacky’ in the evening, and it’s a hard habit to break isn’t it? My solution when I find myself doing it is to get the recipe books out, and spend an hour or so really doing a detailed menu plan and shopping list. Jamie is my favourite. I am terrible for going to the supermarket and buying the same meat/veg each week, and getting in a rut, but knowing that I have super delicious dinner coming really helps.

We’re having lamb for dinner today which is quite calorific, so I need to keep out of the fridge today and follow my own advice!

veryveryquietly · 04/03/2018 10:44

You're absolutely right bear (and congrats on the 4 lbs!). It's def time get back to proper menu planning, and I have grocery delivery coming tomorrow so can get started this afternoon. I was doing much better when I had a written down plan, and less coming home to kitchen chaos. Today luckily I have got both meals planned already so on my way.

Lunch today is leftover cocoa-rubbed salmon with orange salsa, which was good and definitely different. Though I had it with steamed green veg rather than the recommended pilaf. Today is a leftover fillet with some of the salsa, on salad leaves. The salsa bit was decent but I would have had more shallot and less chopped orange bits.

Back to normal, after snow days, tomorrow.
I have been eating lots of roasted peppers and goats cheese, lamb shank. I have chilli and gammon ready for the next couple of meals.

veryveryquietly · 04/03/2018 18:23

Ooh, I want to come to Oblomov's house for dinner! Adore roasted peppers and goats cheese.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 04/03/2018 18:28

very I was just thinking the same thing! I love lamb shank too. It's making me feel disappointed with my chicken and red pepper curry.

bridgetreilly · 04/03/2018 20:16

I have declared The End of my 8 weeks and celebrated with a packet of McCoys crisps and a seriously good billionaire's shortbread bar. Worth about a day of calories and carbs between them. SO WORTH IT.

But tomorrow I am going back to Mediterranean eating, just not calorie counting so much.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2018 20:25

Woo hoo Bridget, well done!! Enjoy your celebration!

I’m ending the day on about 1200 cals. I ended up having some dessert after dinner. I’ve done 14k steps, including a 3.5k run.

I’m all set for my strict week, shopping list done ready for tomorrow , and I have a busy week ahead which should help too.

Have a great week everyone!

Oblomov18 · 05/03/2018 11:04

I am at work. God. I am so hungry. I haven't had anything yet. I'll have to have my lunch early though.

londonista · 05/03/2018 12:09

I weighed in this morning and have only lost another 2 pounds, but it all counts. So far i've lost 19 pounds in 5 weeks - can't really complain about that.

Jeans shopping at the weekend, as my size 18 jeans were looking a bit shabby. Managed to squeeze myself into a pair of size 14s which I think at the end of my 8 weeks should be a perfect fit.

I am a bit concerned that my diet has descended into a serious of extremely functional intakes - you couldn't really call them meals. My husband says he never sees me eat anymore, I just come in and consume a small portion of "nutritional sludge" as he calls it, and then move on. I just don't enjoy cooking at all, that's the problem. I don't want to spiralise anything or steam or do any prep at all really. Last night I had 3 slices of ham and a teaspoon of peanut butter for "dinner", along with my supplements. Sometimes, I'll just have a cuppa soup and some cut up cucumber. Cutting up turkey to go on a bagegd salad is about as technical as it gets!

I am eating the calories, just in a very uninspiring way! I need to get into the swing of the BSD cooking though because I don't intend to "go off" the diet at the end of the 8 weeks, I'm just going to introduce one extra 200 cal meal in the mornings, probably porridge made with water (which I actually quite like, but I appreciate sounds like prison food! I cannot wait to have some porridge).

bridgetreilly · 05/03/2018 12:51

8 week stats:
Weight lost: 24lbs
Sizes dropped: 2 and a bit
Average calories consumed: probably around 1000/day, I suspect. Maybe even a bit more.
Prediabetes symptoms: gone
Sleep: massively improved
Out of breath from climbing stairs: not any more
Lives changed: totally

RarelyInfallible · 05/03/2018 13:16

Fantastic Bridget - well done!

AromaticSpices · 05/03/2018 13:20

Wow lots of inspiring results posted today!

I am about 8lbs down in 2 weeks. Had a reasonable weekend although a few little pit falls (small pancake and some prosecco) but back on plan today.

Someone told me I looked like I'd lost weight today! Feeling slim also.

Londonista I've always taken pleasure from cooking and i do enjoy it, so I've been mainly eating the family dinners just minus the carbs. Which is working for me but we all have our different ways to get where we're going. 19lbs sounds like youre doing well!!

bridgetreilly · 05/03/2018 14:08

People noticing you've lost weight is a great encouragement, Aromatic.

I'm not sure I could have done this diet if I didn't cook, Londonista. One of the things I've really enjoyed about it is planning and making the meals. I'm so impressed that you are keeping going despite such functional meals.

londonista · 05/03/2018 14:49

Aromatic, I totally agree - I feel really good, and actually it's nice to feel a bit leaner. I do a lot of weights classes, so I do feel quite strong at the moment which is great.

I must try to get to grips with the cooking - like most diets, the preparation is key! I have tomorrow off so I'm going to make some meals and portion them up. You all sound like good cooks, Bear and Oblomov are always posting tasty dish ideas!

Bridget - that's awesome! So pleased for you. Even though it is a hard diet, 8 weeks is not so long and you do get used to it. Part of the success for me will/has been breaking bad eating habits.

londonista · 05/03/2018 14:58

Yes Bridget - it's not ideal. I think without the meal planning and cooking (i.e. learning new habits and recipes), there's a high chance I will regain the weight. Assuming I can manage another 3 weeks!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/03/2018 18:10

Great losses everyone! Well done Bridget! I’d love someone to notice I’ve lost weight, but I’m currently still wearing my size 16 winter coat everywhere. I envisage some great unveiling when it finally gets warmer, where I throw off the thick coat to reveal my new, skinny frame! I bought from Ebay a grey knitted dress which previously would have been an absolute no-no, it’s very unforgiving. I reckon a few more weeks and I’ll be brave enough.

I absolutely could not do this plan without cooking, hats off to you londonista, because I would have caved by now for sure. One if my favourite things to go is to look through a recipe book, choose something really calorific and cheesy, and then anticipate it all day!

Had a busy day, dropping Ds at my parents house and stayed for lunch. They are doing old fashioned rosemary Conley style weight loss- calories counted, low fat everything, a bit of legs buns and tums at the village hall, and a daily ‘oooooh just one’ little treat. I ate lunch with them, and I was bloody starving, so after collecting Ds from school and going to Asda, I ate a mini pork pie in the car park like some sort of carb-junkie. Still, after my v low cal lunch, I should be ok! One thing about this diet is it certainly tunes you in very quickly to how your body works and what it needs.

Congrats everyone, so many great achievements! Wow bridget that's excellent.

londonista I know the feeling. I like to cook but lately have been having a lot of justcannotdeal days.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 05/03/2018 22:18

Bridget what fabulous stats! Well done!
bear your post brought back memories. I did Rosemary Conley about 7 years ago and was always the youngest person there!
I had quite a good BSD day today. Pea and broccoli soup; BSD roast chicken. I'm hoping our supermarket delivery makes it through tomorrow.
