Blood sugar diet thread 7

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2017 13:53

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

We have been trying Cider Vinegar on salads found in back of cupboard, must have bought it for some recipe or other eons ago. Its nice ... when you get used to it. I think MM recommended in the Clever Guts Book but not sure if we have the right one.
Also adding a little olive oil atm.

PS thank you Tesco for the surprise free Falafel's and Spanish Olives gift that came with the shopping this morning - quite unexpected and properly invigorated our lunch and on plan too Wink

DH appears to be joining me on plan - at lunchtimes at least.

Apple cider vinegar has a long history of helping weightloss, with actual proper sciencey data behind it, although I couldn't quote any. I remember my mum drinking it (1tbsp in hot water) years ago and me and my friends drinking it after school once thinking it was real cider

It's supposed to suppress appetite I think?

On salads I have balsamic and olive oil sometimes, or even just olive oil and lemon. I didn't realise balsamic was high carb until I read it on here on a previous thread. I need something on salad, I have actually cut down to light mayo as the full fat was 100 cals a tbsp which is just ludicrous. Light mayo probably has some sugar in, but I figured that the benefit of eating the salad would outweigh the impact of the sugar- this is probably wishful thinking and completely wrong!!

Not quite the weekend I had planned. Ended up being admitted to hospital. Home now and resting watching wimbledon I managed to stay on plan except for one celebratory glass of champagne. Haven't eaten last couple of days due to being poorly, not entirely sure a 48 hour fast is on plan.

Anyone found a plain toast substitute? I was thinking of trying a plain omelette but still nauseous so not sure about that. I'm also back on oramorph which is sugary but I'd rather be comfortable than avoid all sugar.

Oh blimey Flibberty! That doesn't sound good :(

The Livlife bread someone recommended is great and less than 4g of carbs/slice.

oldbirdy · 04/07/2017 18:46

I like "cloud bread" which is in one of the blood sugar recipe books: it's egg white, cream cheese and salt and pepper if I recall correctly. You whisk it till stuff like a meringue, then bake it. It's sort of slightly rubbery texture but nice with butter and marmite.

ShutUpLegs · 04/07/2017 19:39

Gah. Have not lost this week for the first time. Its week 4. I must Hold My Nerve.

PhyllisWig · 04/07/2017 21:41

Fliberty, hope you are ok!

Livlife bread is good toasted. I notice there is some new hovis low carb bread out (seeded, white and whole meal I think). Haven't tried it but maybe it's worth a punt?

After my grumpiness in the week I actually lost 4lbs in the end, down from 10 11 to 10 7. 10 7 was my first target so pleased to hit that in 4 weeks and hopefully the next 4 will result in a few more lbs off to give me a buffer.

I really don't feel wonderful though. I have just been given a tentative diagnosis of adult onset asthma though and have my period so will put it down to that Sad

oldbirdy · 04/07/2017 22:03

My main problem, after my dreadful headache/ vomiting Friday and a weekend of seriously aching hips, is that I am scared of my blood sugar dropping too low and getting headaches like that again, and I am sabotaging myself slightly, eating a bit extra each day. Still only 900 to 1000 cals a day, but weirdly this morning I had put on 2lb since yesterday. I am assuming it's hormonal, currently mid cycle which is when I tend to bloat.

Had teriyaki salmon with courgette. The recipe said 440 cals. It was a salmon fillets (about 200 cal), 2 desert spoons of teriyaki sauce (most of which got left in the marinading bowl or burned off), and a courgette and 2 spring onions, all fried in 1tsp of olive oil. How is that 440 cal?

Perdyboo · 04/07/2017 22:57

Get well Flibberty!! Flowers
I think I'm having a stubborn scales week....Confused

tobee · 05/07/2017 01:24

oldbirdy according to my app, 1 tbsp of olive oil is 108 cals by itself. Sad

oldbirdy · 05/07/2017 07:13

Tobee - thanks - but it was a teaspoon of oil.

That would be 30something cals I guess?

Roundisashape · 05/07/2017 07:45

Good morning all. Just thought I'd check in. I read all the time but am useless at writing.

I started out at 11 st 4 at the end of April. This morning hopped on the scales to see 9st 5. So I'm feeling very pleased with myself. I have a new problem now that all my clothes are too big (Not that I'm complaining).

For what it is worth I did hardly any days at 800 cals. The first few weeks I was averaging 1100. But I was very strict on my carb count. I am now generally around 1400 -1600 and carbs very rarely above 100g (50 in the early days). But once you have stopped eating bread, chips, potatoes, pasta and rice I couldn't really work out where to get my carbs from 😁.

I have decided to just try and keep up with this way of eating, but do allow myself an odd off meal here and there.

I do actually think I have found a diet that is sustainable for life. I find I don't actually want to go back to my old ways. Although I may have to start doing something about my 85% lindt chocolate habit!

Keep going ladies - I remain inspired.

yumyumpoppycat · 05/07/2017 08:15

Wow that is amazing Round - you give me hope that I can find a maintenance mode!

I tend to work out cals for recipes as I go along rather than trusting the recipe total, by using the packets the ingredients come in.

yoohooitsme · 05/07/2017 09:51

Round thanks for posting this it is very inspiring. I have been starting to think this could be a way of life in a way I knew slimming world could never be but also dare not hope I have found the answer.
Also great to see you didn't stick to 800 all the time and still got results 😉 Making it flexible and having it still work is vital if it's a permanent way of eating I guess.

Flibbertyjibbit · 05/07/2017 11:02

Thank you, Sadly we haven't found the livlife bread in our city. Feeling a bit brighter this morning, still rather sore. Appetite still non existent due to pain. I was so worried I would be told to stop the BSD but my consultant has ok'd me to continue Smile Its 2 weeks today till my birthday so keeping fingers crossed I will have recovered enough to go on our mini break.

Wow Round that is a great loss! Very inspiring, thanks for posting.

Flightywoman · 05/07/2017 11:25

Glad you're a bit brighter Flibberty, fingers crossed for your jaunt.

Round that is really encouraging about sustainability - I had the same problem Yoohoo, SW ended up not being something I could do long-term.

tobee · 05/07/2017 13:08

oldbirdy yeah I wondered about that a few hours after I posted. Yes, it's official, bsd is taking over my life! Blush

JigglyTuff · 05/07/2017 15:46

Teriyaki sauce is very high in carbs :(

oldbirdy · 05/07/2017 17:00

It was horrible too! It was a recipe on the official blood sugar diet website so I assume it's ok. I wasn't a fan.

Oblomov17 · 05/07/2017 17:31

Hope Flibberty is ok.

And Round, that sounds really good. Maintenance working really well. Inspiring for us all, because we've all been talking a lot about how we will deal with maintenance.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/07/2017 17:33

Another day ticking along on plan for me, not calorie counted but just eaten 'allowed' foods. I'm out with the PTA tonight for our end of year social, so I've just checked the pub menu and they have a choice of 3 salads so I'll decide when I get there. I'll probably also have a glass of wine or a gin and slim as well, hence the not counting calories today!

JigglyTuff · 05/07/2017 21:05

Oh god I hate that oldbirdy!

I made the skinny veggie burgers the other day and over-blitzed the mixture. It was horrid :(

Yes thanks Round for updating us. Very inspiring!

Flightywoman · 05/07/2017 23:30

Yeah. It's all gone pear-shaped in a booze way.

My family has suffered a bereavement and I am medicating with alcohol. Which is bloody delicious btw!

Tomorrow will be better.
