Shiny new thread for the BSD'ers. Best thing you can do is first read the MM bsd book do you get a full grasp of what the rules are but in a nutshell:
800 calories a day
No bread/pasta/potatoes/rice
No processed food, no alcohol
As close to no sugar you can get
Full fat, no low fat
Protein to keep you full
2-3 litres of water a day
10,000 steps a day (work your way up)
HIIT if you can 2-3 times a week

Hi everyone. I've just started round 2 of the BSD after doing very well early in the year and then eventually falling off the wagon and gaining some weight back! Am on day 2 now and had forgotten how many times I needed to go to the toilet in the early days, hope my body gets used to the increase in water soon.

pfrench · 20/09/2016 19:22

Kitchen closed at 839 today, which is good.

Did a recipe from the book - the chicken breast with chopped basil, parmesan and ground almonds. Sounded weird, tasted ace. Had it with a bit of thick tomato and cashew nut soup I made yesterday as a sauce, and broccoli. Always have a square of dark chocolate after dinner, so will have that later with a ginger tea.

I'm looking at options for after the 8 weeks. Currently toying with the idea of going to a Joe Wicks idea of eating carb meals around exercise, and upping the exercise a lot more - more running, and more HIIT sessions. I feel like I need to eat some carbs just to keep my guts running properly - I don't like the possibility of constipation that is around at the moment. The last time I ate 'low' carb, I had porridge with bran for breakfast, which is something I'll start fancying again now it's cooler weather. Still thinking of 800 cals on the days when I don't do any exercise though, since I haven't really been hungry on it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/09/2016 19:36

That sounds delicious pfrench is that in the original book? I did beef stir fry with asparagus and sesame seeds (no seeds though!) and added a bit of spring onion and red pepper. It was so nice although I'm left a bit 'wanty' now. I am in awe of your ability to each just one piece of chocolate!
I think I will have something small now- it's been a stressful few days for various reasons and our baby just isn't sleeping well at all. Rather to plan a small something than end up scoffing aimlessly!

yumyumpoppycat · 20/09/2016 21:31

Welcome back zoobalina - was it you who started thread 1!

Flowers newaverage hope your baby has a good night sleep tonight.

Pfrench - I am doing the 5:2 version at mo, well sort of, I am logging every day on MFP, planning for 2 days under 800, and aiming for my cals for the week to average out at under/ around 1200 a day. I am doing 3 x 30 mins weight workouts and 2 x insanity max 30 workouts a week. I am trying to keep under 100g carbs a day but have been over on one day, and averaged around 60 g carb a day over the last week, I am also making a real effort to get to 25g fiber a day (thanks mainly to lentils) but have averaged 19g fiber for last 7 days. Need to drink more water to flush the lentils through! I sound a bit obsessed but have been a real MFP dodger for the last couple of months.

Welcome morevamp. The book includes a workout program of weights and a hiit workout etc this is supposed to be done without increasing the calories, you could always do the 5:2 version and just lose more slowly. Most people lose a lot the first 2 weeks so one option would be to dial back a bit on exercise for 2 weeks and do 800 a day and then move to a more 5:2 approach. You could pop onto bigchocs exercise thread she would prob be able to give you really tailored advice.

This morning I was down to 138.7 - 0.2lbs lower than my lowest weight on this, so the first real loss in ages.

Waves to everyone and herbal teas for those of use feeling munchy!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/09/2016 21:36

Yum yum have you tried things like psyllium capsules to boost your fibre? I haven't used them myself but I know some of the long termers who were on this thread a while back were using them. I think you can get them from Holland and Barrett's , I think they are a high fibre supplement but obviously that prevents you needing to eat certain foods to get fibre in.

yumyumpoppycat · 20/09/2016 21:40

Actually I have some languishing in the cupboard, I should have some tomorrow!

zobalina77 · 20/09/2016 22:03

Hi yumyum, I didn't start part 1 but I was there around the beginning!

Have just ordered the new recipe book so am excited for new ideas. Have made some spinach and ricotta egg muffins for my breakfast. Work out at about 70 calories each and look yum!

MoreVelmaThanDaphne · 21/09/2016 09:08

First day was OK. I didn't really feel hungry as such, but I did get a bit woozy towards dinner time in the evening. Horrible headache though!

2 scrambled eggs and some smoked salmon with wilted greens and sauted mushrooms for brunch

1 beef patty with mustard and capers, steamed greens and carrot salad for dinner, followed by a bit of chopped apple with plain yogurt and pecans.

Went for a run and had a protein shake afterwards (plain, 98 cals).

825 cals - I am going to eat the exercise calories for the time being and see how I do, adjusting as necessary.

I've been checking my morning sugars which have been a bit on the high side, this morning it was 4.7 which is ace, it hasn't been below 5.0 for a while, and sometimes higher. So that is encouraging already...

Julie0210 · 21/09/2016 09:23

New to Mumsnet so might have posted in the wrong place. I want to join this thread, just been away for the weekend, managed to gain 6 lbs as I basically ate scones and cakes for 4 days!! Going to try and kick start weighloss by giving up sugar, need to loose about 12lbs. Haven't read all the posts yet but will catch up over the day. Hope I can join in? Thanks

More velma that sounds like an excellent and yummy day - brill your blood sugars are going down. a lot of us often go up to 1000 anyway so that gives leeway for 200 exercise cals in your case. Think it is a good idea to aim for 2 proper 800 cals days on your rest days.

waves to zobalina how were your muffins?

My fast day yest ended up being another under 1100 day really need an 800 day or 2 this week esp as going out sat night for a friends birthday! Still scales down again and MFP tells me I have lost 35lb so feeling positive! Thanks everyone for keeping going I had started to despair but it is looking like as long as I log everyday on MFP while sort of '5:2 ing' I should still lose.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/09/2016 09:56

Had a mid week weigh in this morning, down 3lb since Saturday which is good, but still not really made a dent into my summer regain! My strategy of book recipes & 1 treat a day is quite easy to stick to, although last night I did have a handful of nuts and a fun size Milky Way at 3am while pacing the living room with a howling baby. Feel like a wrung out cloth today so I've already prepped the dinner while howler was eating his toast. Hungarian goulash from the new book, although we didn't have all the spices needed. It's slow cooking for a few hours. I'm going to try to find time to make a sort of terrine thing as well, to slice up for lunches (an old favourite from my slimming world days!)
I'm really feeling the effect of two school runs a day too, today I paced the big hill rather than crept up, sweating, so must be having some positive effects!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 21/09/2016 11:13

Hello all the new people and the returners
bear a 3lb loss is excellent - well done! I've been so inspired by your pics, I downloaded the new recipe book. Yesterday I made a pot of soup. Today, may be trickier as I'm going for lunch with a friend but hopefully there will be something low carb on the menu.
Has anyone made pate? I noticed the new book had a recipe for a fish pate and there are some low carb Brussels pate recipes online. For some reason, it's always struck me as something that would be fiddly to make. Is it?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/09/2016 11:58

I've always just done simple pate recipes like chicken livers, cook them lightly with some onions, cool them and then blitz with some cream cheese. I'm sure there are some more technical recipes out there but I usually only make it for me to eat so I don't bother being all gourmet about it! In my experience it doesn't keep well, so either be prepared to eat it all or only make a small batch. My MIL makes a delicious smoked fish one in the same way.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/09/2016 12:40

Lunch today- a bit of a salady-platter type affair. I had a helper with the olives - who knew a not quite one year old would like them, although I think he thought they were grapes st first and got a bit of a shock! The beans were a tinned bean salad but it was incredibly bland and not really worth it.

Julie0210 · 21/09/2016 12:55

Thanks for the links yumyum, I will have a look later when I download the mm book. Do people use mfp to track?

Julie0210 · 21/09/2016 13:00

Hi, does anyone run? I run every day (sometimes just 2 miles) how do you manage with no sugar? I'm doing a 1/2 marathon in 10 days (my birthday!) and would usually eat a few jelly beans on the way round. Just wondering if anyone runs far with minimal sugar/carbs. Thanks Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/09/2016 14:03

Julie I don't run myself, but a few on here do. I think in the book MM does say to avoid really strenuous exercise while doing the 8 weeks plan, so I would probably suggest that you look on the actual BSD forums for advice. My first thought would be to just have a day off if you're doing a serious run and make that your primary focus (ie. Eat what you usually would on race day) and follow the diet plan on days when you're not racing?

pfrench · 21/09/2016 14:31

No idea how it works doing lots of exercise every day, but I ran this morning at 6.30 (!? why was I awake?!) and have struggled today on my normal breakfast and lunch type options. I've just had a handful of nuts and raisins and feel much better... also put a bit of potato into the chicken stew I've made for dinner. Still low-er carb (but moving in to the 50 - 100g rather than

Julie0210 · 21/09/2016 15:52

Thanks, I thought the same, keep at the plan then eat as i previously would have on race day or if doing a longer run over 10 miles. Race day is my birthday anyway so no doubt cake and a glass of wine will feature! See what i can loose in 10 days Halo

APlaceOnTheCouch · 21/09/2016 20:26

bear thanks for the pate info. Do they taste of cream cheese or is it just for texture?
Lunch had lots of low carb options thankfully so I managed to have a lovely time and keep to my cals and carbs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/09/2016 21:32

I was doing so well.....then mil and fil returned from 3 weeks in Switzerland with slabs of Swiss dark chocolate for the children.....you can tell where this story is going can't you? Let's just say that tomorrow is a new, hopefully sugar free, low carb day
Chocolate was bloody lovely though and far too nice for the children
The Hungarian goulash was delicious by the way from the new book

yumyumpoppycat · 21/09/2016 21:45

New average 3lbs is excellent well done, hard earned with wonderful cooking inspiring us all and a sleepless baby too, I regained a good 7lbs over summer and have only just started losing new weight but we are back on it now. Think I might try and lose a bit extra for a christmas buffer!

Am cooking brownies now, sucktastically the first batch were way too undercooked and are for a cake sale so had to start again. Tiny amounts of brownie splatter consumed but prob has screwed up my 800 day, I managed to stop myself from properly eating a piece by imagining myself getting on the scales tomorrow and being down instead of up Blush Next time I bake I will wear disposable gloves and chew mint sugar free gum!

Exercisers please check out big choc's exercise thread I linked to if you havent yet it has an utterly amazing OP. It even has a link to a tdee calculator specifically for runners! www.runnersworld.com/tools/calories-burned-calculator big choc really gives solid advice.

yumyumpoppycat · 21/09/2016 21:49

Cross post at least swiss dark chocolate is a lot more on plan than costco brownie mix.

Good news about goulash too!

Rachcakes · 21/09/2016 22:23

I met a friend for lunch today. It was a Wetherspoons (a nice one, not a scruffy one) and I had the chicken, bacon and avocado salad.
It was quite high in calories (500ish) but good on the carbs, protein and fat.
And it was really tasty.

KindDogsTail · 21/09/2016 22:28

I have not read the full thread, so hope what I am going to ask has not been answered already.

I have been on this diet for about eight weeks. I was not over weight at all and had a good diet before but was a bit worried about getting late on set type 2 diabetes as my grandmother had and my waist and tummy had got much bigger to the point of feeling uncomfortable.

For me the diet has meant avoiding oats, rye bread and rice like I had been having previously, but having carbohydrates through many more leafy vegetables as well as pulses and some quioa and some ryvitta and pappadoms, and having oils from nuts avocados eggs olive oil etc.

My waist and tummy have gone right down, which is good, but that is not what I was wondering about:

I have found I am not at all hungry, and feel mentally extremely well. I have more focus, more energy too, and I now realise it was almost as though I had been depressed before but had not realised it. I feel mentally calmer all the time.

Has anyone else found this? Quite seriously, I almost would not dare go back to what I ate before, I feel so much better. It seems a hundred times better than prozac. Surely people need to know this, if this diet has such a beneficial mental effect without any drugs?
