Shiny new thread for the BSD'ers. Best thing you can do is first read the MM bsd book do you get a full grasp of what the rules are but in a nutshell:
800 calories a day
No bread/pasta/potatoes/rice
No processed food, no alcohol
As close to no sugar you can get
Full fat, no low fat
Protein to keep you full
2-3 litres of water a day
10,000 steps a day (work your way up)
HIIT if you can 2-3 times a week

I agree, I'm not ready to maintain yet either. I still need to be ' on a diet', which is why my last months habit of half heartedly dieting all week and then totally off piste splurging all weekend isn't going to actually get me where I want to be. I need to be properly on plan, hence the shakes this week. ( I'm still hitting 1000 cals each day though!) and for me the key is no sugar. I have had more carbs than 1st time round, but only one serving a day.
If you've lost a lot of weight or dramatically changed your activity levels then it might be worth recalculating your tdee- at least then you have an accurate upper limit for emergencies!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 09/08/2016 20:17

Tdee doesn't work for me. If I eat to Tdee, I gain (which I guess is something to do with my metabolism because I've tried every tdee calculator under the sun) so I haven't used it since I started BSD.
I think getting back into the school routine next week will help me because I get half my steps doing the school run and walking round the office; and a more structured day means I'm more likely to eat properly. Today hasn't been too bad.I'm at 631 cals and 50 carbs. I'll probably be around 800 by the end of the day.

This has worked for me much better than 5:2 but I did average 800cals for most of the first 8 weeks. The last two weeks I've been averaging 900-ish cals. Aiming for 800 again this week.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/08/2016 06:58

I don't think the book really focuses on tdee. If I can recall, tdee is a borrowed idea from traditional 5:2 where you eat 500 cals on two days and 'eat normally' on the remaining 5. Many people who do 5:2 like this don't lose because on the non fast days they eat way too much to compensate, hence the introduction of the tdee idea so even on non fast days you calorie count and don't eat more calories than you burn. I don't think it's mentioned in the BSD book, and certainly not with the frequency it's used on here and other forums. It becomes a safety net in a way, as in a magical number that to exceed it results in gain, but provided I stay under it, I maintain- almost wiping the slate clean in order to start again properly tomorrow. I definitely do this myself!! The BSD med 5:2 relies on the low carb/ sugar free to keep calories low, and your body's natural limits, which in an ideal world we won't exceed.
Re: slimming world. I have done it myself for years. It does 'work' but it's the same as any diet really- it only works if you do it! If you're missing carbs and big portions then it might be worth a try but it will turn on its head everything you've learned doing BSD. It's a high carb, low fat way of eating and encourages you to eat as much as you can of certain foods.

Everything NewBear said makes total sense to me.

yumyumpoppycat · 10/08/2016 09:53

interesting that many of us are having ups and downs, wonder if any original posters who have nailed this no longer needed the thread?! I was strict for phase 1, I did 8 weeks averaging 900 and didnt really drink at all over that time....but I dont have much of a social life, dp was also losing weight at the same time etc which all helped a lot (although a bit depressing re social life ;) prob lost about 20lbs in the 8 week frame). I then had a few breaks for hols followed by some solid weeks of around 900 to lose another 10lbs or so.

I havent lost anything recently because I wasnt following the diet really (although I told myself I was on 5:2) and as a result regained 7lbs..I know the main problem is that I had slipped back to occasional late night munchies. I have now though (prob been less than 2 weeks) mostly relost that without properly calorie counting but aiming for 800, not eating in the evenings (bar poss 1 night out) and trying to be healthier. So my weightloss is therefore approx 31lbs since Jan which isnt amazing but I lost only 8lbs on 8 months of 5:2.

Ideally I would like to lose another 10lbs but I am pretty happy and at a healthyish weight right now. In September i really hope to have a proper go at really following the rules for the med style 5:2 version for 8 weeks. I will be really happy if I lose anything doing that. If I am the same weight on 1st of Jan 17 as I am now that will be a result in itself!

Sorry for essay, hopefully I will do the second phase properly for once now I have said this!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 10/08/2016 13:14

'I wasn't following the diet really'
Actually, looking at it objectively, I think this is probably key. For the last few weeks, I've been fluctuating round about the same weight but I haven't been walking enough, I've been averaging over 900 cals and my carbs are high.
So far this week, I've been closer to my pre-holiday BSD routine ie 800 cals, about 50 carbs and at least half an hour's walking, and so far I'm down 0.4lbs.
I was worried about sticking to 800 cals beyond the 8 weeks but it seems to be the only way to continue to lose.

pfrench · 11/08/2016 18:46

Newaveragebear - I've got around 4 stone to lose really, although I'd be really happy with 2 and a half. I've eaten LCHF before (for 4 years) and lost weight, but over 4 years of living with a vegan, I've put it back on. It's hard to eat low carb as a vegan!! Not that I always eat what he does, but it's a pain to cook a meal each.

I've lost 7lbs in 4 days, which I'm happy with. It's actually not that hard, but it's just going back to my old way of eating, so feels quite comfortable. We've given up trying to cook together, he'd rather I was slimmmer/healthier because that makes me happier.

Regards hitting goal weight and trying to maintain, I just need to remember that this time I'm on it for life. There is only a very tiny window of possibility for me to enjoy crisps.. sob...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/08/2016 19:43

The only reason I ask French is that if you have more to lose I suppose you can be a bit more relaxed on the calorie counting.
I've had a rubbish few days, still in holiday mode I guess. I just can't keep out of the kitchen! Feeling pretty stressed at the moment and I'm a definite comfort eater. Dh gone away for 4 days on a stag do so I'm escaping with the kids to my mums, bug that usually results in bad food choices as she buys treats for the kids that I then eat. I find the school holidays such a chore, they are bored at home and I can't afford days out really, plus what can I do with a teenager, a four year old and a baby???!!!
Right, moan over. On the plus side I bought some new Spanx to wear under my sexy Lycra dress (17 days to go to lose a few pounds!) and I needed a small because my old ones were too big and didn't hold anything in!!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 11/08/2016 20:28

bear good news about the small Spanx Flowers
I can't deny I am glad the school holidays are nearly over but, otoh, I feel they've been a bit of a washout this year. We've had a lot of 'in the house' days too.
I did have a NSV yesterday when I put on my knee-high boots (yeah, typical summer weather - torrential rain!). They are stretchy boots and used to sit under my knee because my chunky legs used up all the stretch. Now they actually cover up to the top of my knee. Grin

GraceGildee · 11/08/2016 22:43

I went to a clean eating cafe today for lunch. It was pretty much what I've been cooking for the past couple of months! Nice food. I tried on a slim fitting dress in front of a full length mirror and was pleasantly surprised at the lack of bumpy bits. I'd still like to lose about another stone and half but obviously the stricter I am the quicker it comes off. And I'm out on Saturday night this week Wine

notsoold · 11/08/2016 23:29

grace ohhh I love the idea of such a cage!

Had my bloods results today. After 6 weeks onthe bsd my hba1c is now 36 .... I can't remember how high it was before my last pregnancy but 36 is good right??? The fasting blood is 4.6.
I got too excited and over ate so my carbs was close to 100g!!!!and my overall calories? 1100

Not2bObvious · 12/08/2016 07:42

Checking in to say hi & mark my place, I like to hear what's going on (not a stalker promise!)
Adjusted my mfp to 1200 cals and have stuck to that or less for the last 4 days. I've lost 2.4 pounds since last Friday even after my horrendous binge of a weekend so I'm very very pleased. Back eating carbs but not many and I'm feeling much happier for it. I'm hoping to keep to 1200 a day for a few weeks, see can I break into the 10 stone bracket by September. Did 3 runs this week so far and planning a 5k in the morning. I had a wee slip yesterday & ate 1600 but I've figured it was because I ate after dinner and it turned on the munchies - living & learning! Now at 11.3.2, hoping to drop another 2lb by next Friday and so on, I have 8 weeks from Sunday to my week away. I know it's unlikely I can drop 2lb a week but even 8lb would be fab (so I can gain it all again on hols lol)
Keep on keeping on gals, you're doing great work!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/08/2016 13:20

Not2 great work! I am Envy at your 2.4lbs loss. If I can lose another 0.1 I will have lost 2 stones and I get a new dress I have my eye on.
Speaking of dresses, what is everyone doing with their larger clothes. Are you holding on to them to see if the weight comes off or giving them away as a motivator not to slip back?

Not2bObvious · 12/08/2016 13:38

And I'm super Envy at your 2 stone place - that's fab! I need to clear out my 14's, I need the space, they take up too much room and I am NEVER going back there.

Which website do we use to calculate tdee again please? We have to re-calculate it, now that we've lost some weight, correct?

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/08/2016 15:02

Oblomov I quite like this TDEE calculator (although I don't use it much). It tells you the different values you would get using the different formulas for TDEE

notsoold · 12/08/2016 17:58

A question please....
After the 8 weeks ( I will need to stay a bit longer as I am still very overweight) does one goes to IF (ie 5.2) or med style cooking or lchf (in ketosis)??
I did 5.2 before and the lack of structure didn't work for me.

GraceGildee · 12/08/2016 19:41

I've done 8 weeks and I'm staying on it but with the odd day off if I'm going out or something.

lookingforhope · 13/08/2016 13:01

Hi all. Have to confess didn't stick to 800 all week as overlooked the small matter of DD's birthday which involved friends staying over and massive pizza order and cake, though stuck to 3 small slices of veggie pizza and a mere inch wide sliver of cake (as opposed to the slabs I cut for everyone else!). Have really reined in the carbs though (bar the odd Dark Rye Ryvita which for some reason I can't leave alone) and lost 1.5lb so delighted, especially as I still can't exercise with broken arm. Going out tonight though and there will be wine. Just doing my best to be super strict on days when I'm not out. Which is most days now that I can't drive.

Working from home normally gives me the munchies so trying to stick to herb tea and water instead of coffee and biscuits and am succeeding in that. Fracture clinic next week. Hoping I can start exercising soon.

Living on fish and salad and stir fried broccoli and mushrooms! Also made a lovely fish soup / stew thing with Tesco mixed seafood (prawns, mussels, calamari), onions, nam pla, soy sauce, garlic, chillis, tinned tomatoes, peppers and pak choi. One seafood pack is only 160 calories and when you add in the stock and veg and tomatoes you make enough for 3 servings and it is so filling and feels like a proper meal even though low carb and calorie. I'll photograph the next one I make for the food diary thread.

Oh and on the question of what to do with big clothes, I say bin them ladies. We aren't going back there are we?

Wishing everyone a great weekend

notsoold · 13/08/2016 13:17

I have hot rid of all my old clothing bar a jeans that I need for barn dancing next week..... gives me satisfaction to fill the charity bag with clothing that I used to wear....

APlaceOnTheCouch · 13/08/2016 14:03

You're all inspiring me to get rid of my bigger clothes. Grin

The scales show I have finally lost 2 stones. Woo hoo! I am just about to order my new dress. (Although by the time I have reached my goal and lost another 10lbs it won't fit me!).

lookingforhope · 13/08/2016 15:46

Wooh, 2 stone! Well done Place Star Halo Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/08/2016 16:51

I sold a lot of my bigger clothes and maternity clothes on eBay after doing Marie kondo, I made over £500!
I'm not having the best few days, had a milkshake and a cake in a coffee shop, and have had lots of bread plus will be curry and wine tonight at my parents for dm's birthday. Needs must. But I've written out my menu plan and shopping list ready to start on it properly tomorrow/Monday (depending when i get to shop) - 2 weeks today is this wedding and I absolutely want to lose a few more pounds (ideally my holiday gain!) by then!
I've used the MM fast diet cook book for my meal plan this week, some new low cal recipes I haven't tried before for a bit of variety.
