Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting & Health
=========================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was FAT, not muscle or water, - in most diets, 25% of lost weight is muscle, up to 50% for sleb crash diets.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His recent article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Also this interview with a leading researcher into fasting in combination with standard cancer treatment: ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Belated Happy Birthday bigchoc :)

not doing well with fasting this week, couple of nights' bad sleep makes it harder. But I'm trying not to expect too much and remembering that there's always next week.

Newkidontheblock22 · 06/07/2016 09:48

I'm not doing too well either as I sabotaged my FD with home made chocolate cake yesterday (although it was the last piece!). Now attempting another FD but does mean I am doing them back to back this week

BigChocFrenzy · 06/07/2016 11:44

Well done, Olive and good luck to the Wednesday fastersSmile
Have a walk in the lovely sunshine to keep up your morale (hopefully it's not p@ssing down your way)

Eagle You should have an initial loss, but afterwards this may go down to the usual 1lb weekly - you are mid-40s and on 1000-cal FDs - depending on whether you are one of those who burns fat easily or keeps a reserve store on BF.
The important thing is to lose healthily & sustainably; it's about getting lean and staying there, not necessarily how quick you get there.

Gald you are feeling better, need
Friday would give you a bigger gap between FDs, so it ought to be easier than tomorrow

mrsmugoo · 06/07/2016 11:52

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I was in this thread, I've had a baby. DD is 5 weeks old, EBF, we're doing great.

I'd like to lose the 20ish extra pounds I'm carrying and as I lost weight easily 5:2ing last year I'd like to do it again.

Is there a post- partum/ breastfeeding 5:2 thread? What would you advise for me? Maybe 800 calorie fasts?

WiggleYourWoo · 06/07/2016 13:28

Doing FD today. I really have a love-hate relationship with FDs. Not looking forward to them but feeling amazing afterwards. I'm fully committed though, I have entered my "pre-children" weight (although the heaviest I was pre-children) and now trying to shift another 3lbs. Having my 200cal lunch now.

doineedhelp · 06/07/2016 13:36

Thanks BCF I think i'm going to go for friday as next FD as got choir practice again tomorrow after work so FD would be difficult...it will also help to curb any weekend excesses, a trap i have fallen into of late - wish me luck.
Good luck weds fasters Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 06/07/2016 14:14

Congrats on achieving your pre-DC SV, wiggle

Welcome back, MrsMugoo and congrats on your lo Flowers
We've had several 5:2ers return after having a baby (sometimes after a rather unexpected one Smile) A couple are on the current thread.
Like Mosely & Varady, we recommend 1000 cal FDs for BFers. If you are not BFing, you can start with 700 cal FDs and gradually come down to 500 over a few weeks, as you feel able.

OP posts:
EagleRay · 06/07/2016 14:18

Hi mrsmugoo and congrats on your baby! I returned to 5:2 last week and have a 9wo DD. Am BF and doing 1,000 cal fasts on advice from Big Choc.

BigChoc I know it's wrong to be impatient about weight loss but the weight gain in this pregnancy has had a bigger effect on MH than anything else I think. A whole kilo disappeared overnight though which is making me feel more positive about life Smile

mrsmugoo · 06/07/2016 15:36

Thanks for the advice - think I'll kick off with a 1000 cal FD tomorrow then Smile

OliveBranchCollins · 06/07/2016 16:28

I stayed the same weight wise this week. I think i got a bit too cocky with how well i was doing and got careless with logging on mfp I'm even happier now that I resisted the rocky road.

I will be a lot more careful about logging things this week.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 06/07/2016 18:43

Closed the kitchen at about 600 today. Slightly undone by a four-hour meeting with a big bag of Maltesers on the table...

Hope other Wednesday fasters have managed a bit better than me!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/07/2016 19:27

Olive Most folk have an sts week sometimes, but it's a good idea to check that NFDs still average around TDEE

600 is fine, Neil still a really good deficit which also puts you into hormesis / repair mode for the FD.
For b2b we recommend 650 and I allow myself 650 in maintenance

OP posts:
NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 06/07/2016 20:55

Thanks BCF, that's good to know. I am resolutely Not Stressing about 100kcal, and might just be a touch more conservative than usual with my intake tomorrow. :)

Theonlyweighisdown · 06/07/2016 21:13

I'm baa-aack Grin fell of the wagon after my holiday in June and have finally climbed back on today. Fast day done at 566 kcals. Cosied up in bed resisting the temptation to raid the newly stocked biscuit tin. Back to body combat tomorrow.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/07/2016 22:06

Welcome back, TheOnlyWeigh You've got right back in the fasting swing.
Well done to the Wednesday fasters.

Checking in for Thursday FD after my weekend of eating and drinking turned into a week of eating and drinking. I dare not step on the scales!

WiggleYourWoo · 07/07/2016 09:41

Yesterday's FD was just under 500. It would be under 400 if not for the meeting in the evening with choc biscuits. No, I didn't have any during the meeting but had to have a 80 cal hot choc when came home as fancied chocolate after staring at it for 2 hours at the meeting and was hungry and wouldn't be able to sleep.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/07/2016 12:24

Good substitute, Wiggle

OP posts:
julietbat · 07/07/2016 12:28

I'm clocking in for a FD today. I'm facing a stupidly busy day at work and a Govs meeting at my kids' school after work so I just won't have the opportunity to eat anything before dinner, even if I wanted to!
I have the same love/hate relationship with FDs like you wiggle - I weirdly look forward to them but then hate them while they're happening and then love how strong I feel afterwards!

Good luck to everyone else on a Thurs FD Smile

ElephantMug · 07/07/2016 14:33

Thanks for the Thursday faster good luck vibes. I think they must be helping. I've had black coffee, water and diet lemonade so far and not really hungry yet.
Good luck to anyone else.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/07/2016 16:39

Stay strong, elephant, juliet and all the other Thursday fasters.
July is usually quiet, as so many folks on hols, including me on my fav staycation.

Just logging in to record my awesome SV today.

Started back 4:3 beginning of last week, I think was 143lbs, so not overweight at 5ft 8" but above my comfort zone, clothes were tight and unflattering. Sustained a knee injury about a month ago so have not been able to exercise and consequently feel very flabby.

Fasted last Mon/Weds/Fri with nothing but a kale smoothie (32oz = 250/300 cals) and a couple of boiled eggs for the protein and again Tuesday this week (and will do another FD tomorrow).

Stepped on the scales at work just now, am down to 136lbs. Very very pleased. I feel bloody fantastic frankly, probably down to the good stuff in the smoothies, and on NFD have been refraining from eating until late afternoon/evening.

Except I'm cold. Absolutely 100% freezing despite living in the tropics, but understand that feeling cold will just be a by-product of the fasting. Will keep going for another few weeks, hope to hit 130lbs and will just maintain.

First couple of FD were grand, but had the fasting hangovers the next day, these have pretty much gone now. Hitting my stride and feeling good!

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 07/07/2016 18:38

Hurrah! Well done stroke.

Strokethefurrywall · 07/07/2016 18:58

Thanks Nell!

I'm not on a fast day today and have just enjoyed a ridiculously healthy vegan rice salad, filled with vegetables and tamarind almonds for lunch with some kind of spicy sauce. I can't believe I liked it, I thought it was going to taste like cardboard.

I don't do salad and I most certainly don't do vegan. I'm not going to tell DH in case he divorces me Smile
