Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

Hi all, I am moving over to the MM diet from Sirt as it's easier for me & DH to do together, but am including some of the lower calorie Sirt recipes as I do believe there are some health benefits. Previous diet experience, including a rather expensive Harley Street diet doc, have shown me that you can put weight on or not lose anything at all (I drove the poor guy nuts) before your body sort of gets in tune with what you are doing to it, hang on in there and drink lots of water, it does work, it also fills you up.....I also need to get my sorry arthritic feet into some trainers and get off my backside & do some more exercise, which for me is walking or swimming, but the latter hasn't got much of a look-in recently as walking around with wet hair in freezing cold winds doesn't float my boat. Incidentally for anyone truly bunged up to the eyeballs, do try products with psyllium husk ie Regucol, much better for the system that anything with senna in it, usually on offer at Holland & Barrett shops or online.

I didn't know MM had a site apart from the Trust me I'm a Doctor one.... DUH.... Thank you for this, very helpful !!!!

Not2bObvious · 08/03/2016 17:54

Welcome H3l, not sure what sirt is but nice to have you over our side! Seeing you mention psyllium I remembered I had a box of capsules in the press so I'm going to give them another shot on a consistent basis. Dulcolax while it works gives nasty cramps & only works on a dose by dose basis. Not helping getting back on track. Finished a delicious dinner and I'm at 795 cals & 15,000+ steps done. I think I'll be closer to 1000 cals today but that's good enough for me. I am pretty tired now, awake since 4am, 15 mins of HIIT before shower. Scales showing 11.8.2 which is perfect, up 1lb from my lowest, seems to be my pattern - hoping for a drop in the morning (and some movement..ahem😳)

Hi Graham [waves]

Obs defo try the husks with lots of water, fish oil supplement might also be worth a try. Here is a link to some stuff about sirt foods basically these are foods (plant based) that potentially have lots of health benefits so they are effectively superfoods but not based on antioxidants, on top of this based on a small study, it is thought these foods increase fat loss whilst retaining muscle.

yumyumpoppycat · 08/03/2016 19:23

Here's another one www.aidangoggins.com/daily-mail-sirtfoods/ the majority of the sirtfoods are blood suagr diet compatible so no problem to add some in without changing diet. I seem to have started to drop weight a bit more doing this prob a coincidence though.

Thanks all. Been berating myself for being a bit silly. I've never lost 1st in 2 weeks before, it's always taken me at least 4 weeks to lose that amount. Someone at work today said they noticed a difference in my face, which made me feel better (although we were all talking about diets so I think she was probably just being kind). I wish my will power wasn't so closely linked to my mood!

Thank you for the advice BigChoc, that's a really good way of thinking about things (that this diet works for my body, I mean). I haven't touched alcohol so far, which is pretty easy for me. We don't drink much. DH is really missing his beer; he only ever has a few bottles over a weekend but its his treat so he feels deprived. I on the other hand have been pregnant or breastfeeding for the last 4 years (stopped feeding finally!) so no longer bothered by not drinking.

The biscuit was a one off; actually pretty much the only sugar ive had at all as I haven't really had any fruit either (just a few pomegranate seeds in salads).

Anyway, came in at a comfortable 730kcal today so still the right direction I hope.

welshbubba · 08/03/2016 20:35

Day 12 here and another 4lb down so far. My jeans are feeling looser but no obvious changes in the mirror. I have a lot of weight to lose and I'm finding that hard to deal with - I'm so cross with myself for letting myself get so overweight. So I'm trying to take it one day at a time and focus on the health benefits of this woe rather than the weight loss. Thanks Bigchoc for all the science, it's really helpful.

Obs2016 · 08/03/2016 20:40

This is not really working for me. Sad

I read about Mosley saying it's not suitable for t1's, but then I read the diabetic forums saying that many type 1's have been 5:2'ing for years and have just chosen to take on board more of his 800 principals.

But I am really miserable.
I have cut out most carbs. Trying really hard. Doing his recipes.

Yes, I've had a few cheats. Wine mostly.

But the being forced to eat, drink lucozade, when you don't want to 'cheat' drives me insane.

I am not doing a very good job of estimating my meals, ie lack of carbs. I keep over estimating. Thinking ... Oh there's a tiny bit there, I'll give myself a bolus on my diabetic insulin pump - I estimate it's 0.5 , Ie 1/2 a carb. But no, it's not. That's too much. But I can't give any less, it only goes in 0.5 increments. So I should have given zero. Bugger. Now I'm forced to have lucozade. Which undoes all my hard work of the day!!!

I'm not losing any weight. And I'm fed up.

Obs2016 · 08/03/2016 20:42

Well done Cheby!!

Cheby · 08/03/2016 21:02

Thank you Obs.

I'm not an expert here by any means, only been doing this a fortnight, and I know nothing about t1 really, but it sounds like maybe you're right and this isn't right for you? The book suggests you take stock after the first few weeks and if you're not coping well to consider switching to 5:2 or long term lower carb options. Would that work at all?

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2016 21:32

I'm a bit puzzled, obs . On around 800 cals per day, just about anyone should be losing, even with carbs. The BSD food type - low carb Mediteranean - speeds up fat loss and is healthy for blood sugar.
Are you doing the daily 800 cals or just the 5:2 version with only 2 x 800 cal FDs ?

Have you tracked on mfp how many calories you are consuming over the week ? If not, mfp for a full week and include absolutely everything, including the damn Lucozade Wink
Also, calculate your TDEE, with activity level as "sedentary"
This will enable us to check if you have a decent weekly calorie deficit - which the BSD requires to work.
Without a calorie deficit, you would be in maintenance.

Obs2016 · 09/03/2016 07:20

No, I have been 'trying' to do 800 every day since beginning Jan, so 2.5 months!!

Obviously I am not only eating 800 calories! My diabetes is very hard to control and very brittle and takes up a lot of my time and thoughts.

Plus, . I have had an awful lot of other things going on in my life: world book day, pyjama day, 2x parents evening, school meetings.
I am only just coping! I find the whole thinking about food, shopping for it, trying to come up with meals etc, very time consuming. Do the thought of logging everything I ate, fills me with utter dred. But maybe that is what I need to do? Sad

Obs2016 · 09/03/2016 07:28

Yesterday I ate 2 meals only:

Spinach, bacon bits, avocado, 2 poached eggs.

Dinner: courgetti with bolognese high fat mince with mushrooms.

I over predicted the carb value of dinner as 1/2 a carb, when I should have just had the courage to enter it as zero. Then I went low and had to have some locozade. Angry

Obs2016 · 09/03/2016 07:29

Presumably you all eat much smaller portions that mine?

Not2bObvious · 09/03/2016 07:32

You sound like you've a lot on your plate Obs and it's overwhelming. I know very little about T1 diabetes (or T2 tbh) but I'd imagine it doesn't make it any easier. Have you lost anything over the last 2.5 months? Apologies you may have said already. From my own experience I had to track everything & be completely honest with myself as I was ruining my weeks hard work with wine and junk on weekends. This was why I decided to give bsd a go over lent. While I don't think it's easy, it's easier than I thought. Since cutting out most of the sugars, I don't seem to crave them - something I've never managed before. But it's work, there's no doubt about that, however I am seeing the results which is so encouraging! I hope you feel better & don't give up 😉

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2016 08:45

Coping with your T1 sounds very tough, obs Flowers
Obviously so disappointing to invest effort into preparing the right kind of food for 2.5 months, then not losing much.
What have you lost in total over that time ?

Your choice of food sounds good and v healthy, but those 2 meals could be 800 cals or 2000 cals, depending on quantity.
If you have a lot of weight to lose, your TDEE should be quite high, so even a daily 1000 -1200 cals of that kind of healthy food should produce a decent rate of loss.

If that's not happening:
. you could mfp just for a week, to find how many calories you are currently consuming per day. If it is way over 800, then mfp can help you judge portion size
. OR save time and just use the recipes from the book or from the BSD site. Then only mfp any extra calories you need from needing Lucozade etc. You should still be within about 1000 cals doing that.

Obs2016 · 09/03/2016 09:45

Thank you all.
I will check out the app for logging all food.
And work out my TDEE.

I wasn't very strict to start off with, at beginning of Jan, got stricter and stricter.
End Jan, I had chest infection and barely ate. I lost a stone, by mid February (7 weeks). I haven't lost anything since (3 weeks)

I have lost a stone. I want to lose 1 MORE.

Cheby · 09/03/2016 11:25

Obs well done on losing a stone! Sorry you were ill though, I'd go easy on yourself, especially if still recovering.

My scales died on me this morning. The battery was almost dead so we put new ones in last night, stepped on them this morning and they said 'overload'!! Had a minor panic until I realised there was no way I could have put on 25kg overnight. 😂

Tried multiple times; sometimes they said overload, sometimes giving me random weights all within 5kg of each other. So, after 10 years i think I'm going to have to go back to Argos tonight and get some new ones. I hate changing scales though. Worried they'll give a different reading. Ah well.

Obs2016 · 09/03/2016 11:34

TDEE 1511
BMR 1259

Have set up MFP on my phone.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2016 12:08

Well done on losing a stone, Obs That's excellent
With your TDEE, if you keep to roughly 800 cals you could theoretically lose about 1kg every 10 days.
Could be faster or slower, depending on how your T1 & meds affects your metabolism.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2016 12:12

iirc, you said your medical team were ok about you trying the BSD. However, do check again with them if you have any concerns.

Obs2016 · 09/03/2016 14:07

No, they are fine Choc. It's me that's fed up!!

Not2bObvious · 09/03/2016 16:07

I'm loathe to confess I've had a bit of a lapse 😩 Basically I had some sugar (fizzy jellies) and then found myself halfway though a box of biscuits which I had bought for visitors. Haven't had a biscuit in over 3 weeks (not even normally a biscuit person!) I wouldn't mind but I just spent ages telling my hairdresser about how this way of eating has cured me of cravings! Pride you do go before a fall pride's a bitch
Sorry for bring the tone of the thread down, needed to confess.

Laska5772 · 09/03/2016 18:43

Obs have you joined Michael Moseleys official BSD site?.

There are lots of people with diabetes there and I'm pretty sure ive seen some some T1s.. Also I have noticed that if you post specific questions regarding diabetes on the forum there , there is lots of help. Also sometimed Dr Ms wife Claire answers directly with medical questions..

I'm not doing anyones knowledge down here, but maybe it may be good to get some info straight from the horses mouth ? Anyway I think Dr M s site is definately worth a look if you havent

Sputnik · 10/03/2016 07:55

Obs sorry to hear you are fed up, it must be difficult managing your diabetes and having to consume lucozade when you don't even want to. Just focus on your achievement so far.

I haven't posted for a while, I had a difficult week with my ankle out of action and a weird virus, anyway back on track since monday, and I'm now allowed to put a little weight on my leg which makes a huge difference. Next week I'll get the cast off, and I'm really looking forward to a swim!
