Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

I lost 5 lbs in my first week. Quite pleased.

Obs2016 · 04/03/2016 16:12

Well done raisins and Lucjam.

I'm not sure how reliable my scales are. They say I am 3lbs down. I'm not sure.

BUT, one of the playgrounds mums came up to me and asked how I was, telling me: "you've lost weight, you look, fab, you are looking really trim".
Second compliment I've had.so that is REALLY nice.
Anyone else had nice compliments?

Cuttheraisins · 04/03/2016 16:39

I haven't yet apart from dh. Mostly because the weight is dropping off my tummy which is always hidden under a winter coat and/or big jumpers! But I can see the difference especially in the morning. I feel a lot less bloated and slimmer around the belly area.

welshbubba · 04/03/2016 20:04

End of week and I've lost 10lb! (I have ALOT to lose though so I'm sure that's why it's so much. But it's a great motivator!)
I'm still not drinking enough but am weeing loads even so - I'm hoping it's the fat dissolving away! Finding 800cals ok at the moment so hope I can keep going.

welshbubba · 04/03/2016 20:05

Sorry that should say end of week 1!

Sputnik · 04/03/2016 20:25

Some great results here!

Burgerbobismydad · 04/03/2016 20:27

Tomorrow morning is my end of week 1 weigh in. Finding it easier as time goes on!

Not2bObvious · 04/03/2016 20:31

I battled through my day, hangover & all. Was doing fine until I went to bro's house to babysit. The house of chocolate Blush Oh dear oh dear, on around 1700 cals. But I'm back on it like a car bonnet tomorrow, hiit/run/16:8

Obs2016 · 04/03/2016 21:35

I have had minimal cabs. But I have had a pina colada and a g&t. I will try and be strict tomorrow and Sunday.

Burgerbobismydad · 05/03/2016 09:19

At the end of week 1, I'm 11lbs down and have lost two inches of waist and two off hips. Pleased with that!

Elvish · 05/03/2016 10:02

Well done Burger!

I'm going to eat out tonight and have a choice of the following restaurants, anyone want to help me choose? Please Smile

Harvester, frankie & benny's, Bella italia, prezzo, 5 guys or chiquitos...

zobalina77 · 05/03/2016 15:17

Have been taken out to lunch for mothers day. Chose a carvery as i thought it would be easier for me, and it was. Just had meat and veg and no pudding. Feel quite smug as my H is stuffed after filling his plate with potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Am just not sure how many calories I have had.

Cheby · 05/03/2016 15:59

We were just discussing restaurants on the way home today, both agreed that a carvery would be fairly easy to manage. I've never been to a Harvester but do they do carvery? Kids plate/small, no spuds, no yorkshires etc.

Burger 11lbs is fantastic! I lost 10.5 in my first week, but no difference on my waist. I suspect I may have lost on my hips, but I was too scared to measure in the first place!

yumyumpoppycat · 05/03/2016 16:16

Try searching their names on MFP. Harvester's menu used to have calories, then didn't for a while, I'm not sure if it does now however because it was previously available there should be a lot of results on MFP. fish is usually a good bet and there are lots of undressed veg at the salad bar? Not on your list but Pizza express does a really nice Legara chicken superfood salad which is under 400 cal.

Elvish · 06/03/2016 09:10

Thanks everyone, we ended up at a pub and I had gammon, a fried egg veg and salad, bit of an odd combination but I didn't have any chips - even left over ones from the kids plates!

I had a few chicken wings from a sharing platter and 2 small glasses of red wine.

No idea how many calories but I'm counting it as a NSV as I could have done worse and also because no-one notice and commented on what I was eating.

Anyway, today will probably be over 800 as well. DD has made me a cupcake which she will probably share Grin but I'll have to try.

Hope everyone else has a lovely mothers day Flowers

ErnesttheBavarian · 06/03/2016 09:26

When is mother's day?

So I am both proud of myself and kicking myself over the same thing. I decided already that Sunday would be my day off. Started eating a giant biscuit thing given to me by my boss and been saving it for 2 weeks. So went for a 3
5 km run at 7 amShock and decides to tuck in. Had 2 bites and was reading the packet and saw eat one (pack of 2) was 500 cals!Shock so for me, and this is a huge step believe me, I stopped eating it and gave the rest to ds. But pretty gutted 250 cals gone in 2 bites! So proud and gutted. Will be much more vigilant.

Obs2016 · 06/03/2016 13:58

Well done Burger.

I am doing ok.
But Today, I am going to allow myself 1 roast potato with the roast lamb Dh is preparing, plus some parsnips( which are quite high apparently) and some red wine. Wine

Burgerbobismydad · 06/03/2016 16:23

Yesterday I had Turkey in breadcrumbs with egg and pancetta and two bites of cake. Felt rough this morning, like hungover! Back on it today. Dp made me breakfast of bacon and eggs, I had a protein shake for lunch and he's making tacos for dinner. He said he'll weigh out my mince and only use herbs and spices and he'll even count out the six cherry tomatoes and weigh the cheese for me so I can stay to 800 cals! Bless him.

Burgerbobismydad · 06/03/2016 16:24

Also I'm not having actual tacos, but baby gem lettuce leaves instead.

HanYOLO · 06/03/2016 18:05

blown it a bit today - just back from lunch - pan asian restaurant so tempeh and brocolli for main (no rice or noodles) but succumbed to pudding which whilst it didn't have any dairy or flour in definitely had sugar. was delicious. hey ho, it's the meal of the day and I did a sweaty yoga class in the morning. will make up for it tomorrow. think I'm still around dee though which is a triumph in itself for me.

do you think it is worth trying going down to say 500 cals the next day to make up for it? or just chalk it up to experience and get back on track?

yumyumpoppycat · 06/03/2016 18:17

I would chalk it up if you are managing to keep to 800 otherwise.

Burger your dp sounds lovely!

Obs enjoy the Wine

I made scrambled egg and salmon for breakfast here and we went to my parent for lunch, my mum chose KFC for her treaty lunch Confused Grin so I had a pulled chicken rice box (c350 cal) and am skipping diner.

Happy sunday everyone. Flowers

Not2bObvious · 06/03/2016 21:34

I've really gone off track the last 4 days, I feel pretty yuck about it. I have got to get back on track, if my Fitbit and general guidelines about tdee are to be believed I shouldn't have a gain (I'm sure I'm have a bloat gain though for a few days)
First time in 18 days today that I had bread or chips, I had very little but still. Was strange. Drank way too much as well, that'll have to stop for sure! The hangover wasn't worth it didn't stop me drinking again of course
So, we all set for a successful Monday fellow bsd'ers?

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2016 21:57

Happy Mothers Day, everyone Smile Flowers
Lots of good SVs and NSVs here, but a bit of science for those feeling their progress is slow:

  • Bernstein is out of date:
nuts, beans and pulses are excellent foods to help those with blood sugar problems. Proven in many studies.
(believe Dr Mosely and Prof Taylor; you doing their BSD after all)
The only issue with nuts is portion control, because of calories. Also, best unsalted, to avoid water retention and increased temptation.

  • The huge weight losses in the book are mostly men, who nearly always lose more quickly than women - due to biology / hormones, larger % muscle and higher TDEE.

  • If results aren't what you hoped, even allowing for sex difference, it is almost certainly because you relaxed the rules too much:
a vlcd is short term and has v little wiggle room
. Almost all women who want to lose quickly on any diet have to be strict about following the main rules, in this case:
daily 800 cals and low carb
. Nearly everyone here has had difficulty losing on other diets, so would be classed as "hard losers"
. So if you DIY and break the rules regularly, you'll lose more slowly, even sts.

  • Alcohol stops fat-burning for several hours - your body prioritises processing alcohol, to handle the toxic byproducts.
During this time, it can't burn fat too
    . alcohol reduces weightloss

  • Low carb diets don't work well with "cheats" of starchy carbs and especially of sugary carbs.
. If you must cheat, then increase cals, NOT sugar.
Even if your TDEE is low.
. That daily sweet biscuit or sweet treat you allow yourself hinders fat-burning all day, because it refills your glycogen stores and keeps you out of ketosis.
It also spikes insulin, increases hunger later - and switches you from fat-burning to fat storage.
It may also be a calorie bomb with 100s of worthless cals.

  • If your TDEE is 2000+ you'll still have a good deficit on 1000 cals, so you'll lose weight steadily.
. If your TDEE is 1350, you may not lose at all on 1000 cals:
You really need to stick to 800 cals and low carb Med.
"Hard losers" need a daily deficit of at least 500+ cals to lose. Otherwise, their body just adapts to cope.
For evolutionary reasons, our bodies are likely to gain on a regular small calorie surplus, but will resist losing on a small deficit

arewethereyet55 · 06/03/2016 22:01

How far is everyone into their diets?

I'm just at the end of week 5. I've only lost 1 lb this week but I know I can do better.

I've had an evening off tonight, had a chinese take a way before I came to work and now I feel mega bloated. I'm on my feet all night so hopefully I can walk it off.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2016 22:13
  • Ernest: at 58kg you will still lose slowly, even being strict:
. The last few kg are nearly all "stubborn fat" which is biologically different to ordinary fat: stubborn fat cells have far more alpha receptors (which resist fat burning) than beta receptors (which don't)
    To burn these stubborn kg:
. Low carb to keep insulin low - BSD is perfect
. Exercise - your 10k daily steps and try to add HIIT a few days per week, even a few mins skipping or sprint intervals
. Patience - 1lb per week is excellent progress; Betsy lost her last 7lb at 1lb per month
. Maintenance - you probably need permanent BSD within daily TDEE and with frequent weighing, to avoid regain.

  • Elvish You didn't gain 40lb in a few weeks, so you won't lose it in that time either.
You can achieve a big loss in 8 or 12 weeks if you keep to the BSD rules.
. I'd suggest you then have a consolidation month on 5:2 BSD, i.e. same food but 2 x 800 days and 5 x TDEE days. You'll still be losing.
Then resume daily 800 BSD for another 8-12 weeks, etc.
. btw, MrDarcy on the main 5:2 thread has lost over 40 lb since early September on ordinary 5:2. She just relaxed and settled in for the long haul.
It takes patience and discipline, but you are a champ and you can do this too.
