The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Erm, undesirable side effect, don't know whether to laugh or cry, BUT after suffering polycystic ovaries and going through an early menopause, my periods are back with a vengeance, means this WOE must have rectified my insulin/blood sugar issues. Haven't even lost that much as I haven't been doing it for long. This could give hope to those TTC

thedevilinside · 19/12/2014 11:33

Oh and congratulations Toes

BigChocFrenzy · 19/12/2014 12:18

Devil Ok, better stock up on sanpro again, especially as your cycle may take a while to normalize.
Smile
Fasting usually helps insulin metabolism issues, which is why some people lose more weight than would be expected from the weekly calorie deficit alone.
Fasting can also help other endocrine issues, which is partly why the 5:2 stork is so busy.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/12/2014 12:35

Glad it's not done that to me - though on balance it sounds like a sign you're healthier. I started 5:2 a bit after stopping the pill, only had periods once in a blue moon without it because of the PCOS. I've actually got no idea where I am meno-wise - on the one hand no bleeds since one about 18 months ago, on the other hand not really any particular symptoms. Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 19/12/2014 12:53

I didn't have many symptoms either, Errol Just some hot flushes at one stage. So, I didn't need HRT etc. At 58, I'm definitely post-meno.
Regular hard exercise and being a healthy weight reduces the symptoms for many folk, also helps reduce risk of osteoporosis. However, no guarantee for either.

Hi folks,

Thank goodness it's Friday! Finished work today too, so no work for a fortnight.

I'm really pleased because I haven't had sugar, caffeine, alcohol, bread or junk all week. First time I've managed that in my life! I had planned on having some chocolate today since it's the end of term and there's always loads on offer, but I didn't really want it, so I didn't bother!

On Sunday it'll be one year since my first FD Grin. I'm chuffed to bits. Will post before and after pics and my story so far on the inspirational thread! I've been waiting all year for this!

Hope your festive fasting is going well guys.

ChristinaHendricksGin · 19/12/2014 19:41

Today was supposed to be fast number 9, but my symptoms were really bad today. I'm not going to call it a failure, I finished at 1500 which is good, I'm just going to move this fast day to Sunday, giving myself tomorrow to psych myself up for it. If I'm still too bad on Sunday then I'll just accept this week was 5:2.

Hope everyone's week is going well.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2014 00:24

That's great, mazzle Looking forward to your anniversary report.
I have 2 weeks hols as well < does her Happy Dance >

Christina Well done, you managed a good calorie deficit in spite of feeling so rotten.
In fact, you might prefer having 1 or 2 weeks of 5:2 per month.

MazzleDazzle · 20/12/2014 19:36

I only wish my kids hadn't started their holidays - could be done with a couple days of peace to get organised!

My first anniversary update is posted on the inspirational thread Grin I'm unashamedly proud as punch!

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2014 19:54

Very well done, Mazzle and a great report about why / how you did 5:2
Newbies especially: very motivating to read Mazzle's journey on the Inspirations thread

ChristinaHendricksGin · 22/12/2014 10:32

Ok, so yesterday I felt worse so it was a 5:2 week. Oh well, worse things happen at sea.

Fast day today, and am determined to stick to it. If I stick to my fast days today and on Wednesday, I can enjoy Thursday to Sunday without doing too much damage. Hopefully.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/12/2014 13:22

That's a sensible plan, Christina Good luck with your FDs
5:2 is flexible enough to allow us all to relax and enjoy Xmas properly

Just read the inspirational thread, to keep me on the straight and narrow! It is fast day today, and I am obsessing about a chocolate orange that is for my son's stocking. Have wrapped it up and hidden it, and eaten an apple instead

BigChocFrenzy · 22/12/2014 20:37

Good decision, devil Your DS will appreciate that, too Xmas Smile

TrenzalorWithBoughsOfHolly · 23/12/2014 08:10

Mazzle thanks for sharing on the inspiration thread. Well done!

I now weigh what I did fifteen years ago when I first tried to lose weight by joining WW. Over the years I rejoined about three more times and gained three and a half stone. It definitely didn't teach me about food. I used to cram myself full of every point.

I've been doing 5:2 for six months now and lost 20lbs although the weight has melted off since I quit sugar at the end of November. I was a complete sugar addict but now reading about it (Yudkin, Lustig etc) I'm truly shocked by the effect it has on our bodies.

This is a great board with no nonsense advice - thank you all.

I hope everyone has a good festive season. X

BetsyBell · 23/12/2014 10:04

I still haven't done any proper 500 calorie days for ages but I have some NSVs to report for this holiday period so far:

  1. I have shared all of my school-gift xmas chocolate. I didn't share much of it last year.
  1. I am naturally doing 16:8 or even 20:4 type hours of fasting when there is feasting.
  1. Really this is part of 2. but I feel it worthy of reporting - I am thinking about whether I want to eat something before eating it, and the answer is often no where it would have been yes before.

Now, if I can keep this up for the duration of the holidays I'll be sorted!

Breadandwine · 23/12/2014 13:55

Won't be able to fit in a complete 24hr LOF this week, so I'm also doing 16:8 or similar on most days. It'll be an 18:6 at least today, since I'm in town shopping, for my sins, and I haven't eaten yet! Sad

To do this I incorporate my essential flaxseed input into my lunch - which means I eat less bread - no bad thing.

Apart from the vegan chocolate liqueurs from Lidl, which I feel are obligatory at this time of the year Grin, I'm well on my way to giving up my chocolate addiction.

I now get a sweet hit whenever I want one by poaching unsulphured apricots or dates for a little while, then storing them in the fridge. One or two of these satisfies my taste buds and doesn't lead to me wanting more.

For my pudding on the day I'll have some of these with some sliced banana, soy cream and Benedictine.

I've a post pending on my blog about my vegan Christmas feast - I'll put the link up when I get a chance.

ATB to all those fasting today - just think of those lovely health benefits! Smile

TalkinPeace · 23/12/2014 16:43

Another one who will not "Fast" for a few weeks, but will do 16:8 or variants.
We plan one meal a day over Christmas
and then one of bread and nibbles and then that's probably the lot - for all four of us

but tonight its DH's works Christmas do - with his accountant (me) and his researchers (the kids) Xmas Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 23/12/2014 18:54

Well done, Trenzalor You're the woman you were 15 years ago. Keep 5:2ing and you'll reach your goal.

tip I hope the MD (your DH) doesn't make as long an end of year speech as our director. I presume you've approved the menu and special effects for your works do.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/12/2014 19:02

Tomorrow, if I don't oversleep I'll fight my way into town and to the Apple shop. I plan on replacing my lobotomised iPad 2 with the IPad Air 2 , 64 GB, cell and wifi. And I'll NEVER upgrade the IOS.

Then I'll collect a takeaway vegan curry with raw vegan accompaniments for Xmas lunch. But I'll also get some non-vegan choc tart and lemon meringue pies from the deli and some frozen yog with berries & almonds. < dribble >
Xmas Smile
I'm another who does 16:8 or Fast 5 most days. It gives the health benefits of fasting for those of us just maintaining.

OP posts:
Breadandwine · 23/12/2014 21:33

I think I've just discovered a new variant - 23:2! Wink

I took a lot longer over my shopping than I intended - long story which I won't bore everyone with - but still wasn't hungry. So I didn't eat until after 7 - and by 9 I'd finished a pre-Christmas port - and I was fasting again. Grin

It'll be one o'clock and lunchtime before I know it!

Here's what I'll be having on Christmas day.
