The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

I'm the same Trenzalor. I've cut out sugar for the last week and the scales have plummeted! My stomach is much flatter too.

Not sure how long I can last out though! I had planned to eat whatever I liked Xmas Day / Boxing Day, then fast on Sat, but now we've been invited out for dinner and drinks.

Like TiP, I've been passing on things I would have scoffed before and only eating when I'm hungry. If you can fast for more hours a day than you eat, then you're on to a winner. To think I used to eat for 15 hours a day, every day...no wonder I was overweight!

TrenzalorWithBoughsOfHolly · 24/12/2014 15:32

Oh yes Mazzle - the tummy shrink has been amazing! My measurements from beginning 5:2 show a five inch loss.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/12/2014 17:53

Happy Christmas Eve everyone!

Definitely not fasting this week (not sure about next week either TBH as one of my usual FDs is my birthday and tradition says either DH and DD take me out for lunch or they have to make me a special meal). Though I might be ready for a day or two ... despite only having homemade soup and a roll for lunch and a walk instead of breakfast, I'm now in that hmm do I want dinner state which follows spending most of the afternoon baking with DD. She doesn't like cooking but decided that rather than xmas pud we should have a home-made Yule log. So, orange swiss roll with chocolate orange buttercream, with chocolate fudge bark and a sprinkling of icing sugar snow. Obviously we had to eat the sponge trimmings and scrape the chocolatey bowls. I think we're going to start it tonight as the buttercream was rather runny (too much orange juice) and I think it may be a bit soggy tomorrow. It does look quite magnificently log-like at the moment though, all the better for a bit of cracking. Does the inclusion of nice healthy 3 eggs and orange zest and juice in any way offset the butter, sugar and whole bar of green&blacks plain chocolate? Grin

TalkinPeace · 24/12/2014 18:08

MMMMM baking
our house had

  • sausage rolls
  • mince pies
  • gingerbread house
  • fudge
and supper tonight is smoked salmon followed by ribs but I'll be good and have a salad with it Xmas Grin
ErrolTheDragon · 24/12/2014 18:16

I made a batch of mince pies too and DH has already scoffed 3 of them. That's the thing I hate about baking - he goes and eats it too quickly. I had to be very firm that he couldn't 'try' the Yule log yet!

I think we're just going to have cauliflower-and-lots-of-other-veg cheese tonight, which I'll happily make while listening to Zurich part II on R4. Smile

MazzleDazzle · 24/12/2014 20:00

Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you all have a lovely day, whatever you're doing.

I fasted today. Yes, a Xmas Eve fast Xmas Smile Needs must! I've promised myself I can eat and drink anything I want for the next 2 days!

Everything is prepped for tomorrow. Other than the roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding, everything else just needs reheated. I'll go to bed dreaming of food! It's just DH and the 2 DC for lunch. The kids are super excited! 3 and 6 is the perfect age.

Well done Trenzalor, that's a fantastic loss!

Breadandwine · 24/12/2014 22:39

Did you manage to get your super IPad Air 2 , 64 GB, cell and wifi. today, BC? You will be careful not to dribble any of your curry over it, won't you? Xmas Grin

I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it! Enjoy your (nearly) vegan feast tomorrow!

I made a batch of mince pies too and DH has already scoffed 3 of them. That's a tribute to your baking, Errol! Next time, freeze them as soon as they're cool enough. If that doesn't work, make a double batch! Grin

Just had an hour's kip after 3 pints down the pub with my son and his mate and I'm feeling no pain!

Have a lovely day tomorrow, everyone! Remember, that's the day you can have whatever it was you couldn't have today (yesterday?)! Xmas Grin

TalkinPeace · 25/12/2014 20:48

And lo, it shall come to pass that TiP shall graze herself stupid on just one day a year.
Its fun, but once a year is fine by me.
Back to 16:8 tomorrow.

Breadandwine · 26/12/2014 00:34

Well, best laid plans and all that!

Woken up this morning by my son shouting, "Breakfast is ready in five minutes!" Shock

The young bugger had only made us all a fried breakfast - with a vegan one for me. Now I haven't stopped eating all day! More like a 8:16 than a 16:8! Xmas Grin

Back to the grindstone for me tomorrow!

Hope you all had as good a day as I had!

BigChocFrenzy · 26/12/2014 10:04

B&W How lovely of your DS. I'm so Xmas Envy of a cook on tap.
Xmas Smile
With noone to waft temptation under my nose, I'm having a mini-FD today: I'm stuffed after a very indulgent week, especially with the gym being closed 24-26 Dec, so I haven't burned it off. Open tomorrow and spin class, thank goodness. I'll do some heavy lifting before, too.

Unlike B&W, Errol, I just don't exercise at home, too boring - a few years ago I threw away a roomful of equipment (£7k) because it just collected dust.
Blush
I've been lazing in a massive daily Kindle orgy.
Phew, just realised one week of hols almost finished, only another 8 days (32 books) to go.
Xmas Sad
Is B&W the only retired person here ?
Xmas Hmm
I must buy my new iPad Air on Monday - trains will be on a normal timetable then and I'll have a day out before evening spin.

OP posts:
MazzleDazzle · 26/12/2014 10:46

I'm with you B&W! It'll be another day of feasting here. Though saying that, I've mostly eaten protein and veg, with a little bread and sugar. Nothing compared to my usual Christmas standards. Got loads of leftovers, so I've invited some folks round for lunch today.

Tomorrow we're going out for a curry for a friend's birthday, so it'll be a while before I get to fast.

I also find it difficult to motivate myself to exercise at home BC. I always put it off, or do it half heartedly. Looking forward to getting back to it on Monday.

Breadandwine · 27/12/2014 17:53

No exercise here since the 23rd - I'm giving myself a week off.

But, ahem, BC, I'm not really retired. I admit I took early retirement from the civil service 22 years ago, but I'm still teaching* up to 10 hours a week, ATM!

So, semi-retired, perhaps. Xmas Grin

Teaching my hobby - I love it! IMO, it's what you should be thinking about, BC*, when the gov't eventually allows you to retire!

TalkinPeace · 27/12/2014 18:52

I'm self employed so permanently semi retired!
Well, I average 30 hours a week but that masks anything between zero and 75
I did a tax return today, just because the HMRC server goes really quick at this time of year!

Have stuck to 16:8 so far.
But the 8 has been rather OTT
hey ho
planned fast on Monday, not oozing over the jeans too much.

Wibbley · 28/12/2014 19:38

Hi everyone Xmas Smile,

I’m planning on starting 5:2 tomorrow. I’ve had the book for ages and have seen the documentary when it first came out. Although 5:2 is something I’ve wanted to try for ages for both health and weight loss, I keep putting it off (barring a couple of days last year when I tried to stick to 500 calories and failed).

So, i'm trying again Smile. I’m not exactly sure what I weigh as I’m not brave enough to look right now but I’m guessing somewhere around 12 stone at 5’6. I’m planning on doing Monday and Friday this week but Monday and Thursdays most weeks.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/12/2014 22:05

Welcome Wibbley Good idea not to wait until the New Year.
Xmas Smile
I recommend you measure your waist and hips - not so scary as the scales. You can monitor progress via tape measure, knotted piece of string or just by your clothes becoming looser.
No need to weigh yourself, or you can do so every 6 weeks say, whatever you prefer

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 28/12/2014 22:15

Tips for newbies:
. DRINK plenty of water
. most people find it easiest just to have black coffee or tea instead of breakfast
. mid-morning, a teaspoon of Marmite from the jar helps stop hunger headaches, while your body gets used to fasting
. you can save all 500 cals for supper, or have some for lunch
. eat lean protein and plenty of veg, e.g. soups, curries, stir fries, eggs
. avoid added sugar, fruit juice, cereal

Wibbley · 28/12/2014 22:48

Thanks for the welcome and the tips BigChocFrenzy. Smile

I couldn't wait until New Year. After my Christmas gluttony I feel such a strong desire to eat more lightly it would be a shame to not take advantage of it!

I have measured my waist, which is where I tend to store most of my excess fat and thought I’d measure every week. I measured around my belly button to make it easier to get the same place each time.

Food wise, I was thinking of having a cup a soup for lunch and the rest of the calories for tea. I love marmite so will definitely try that tip!

BigChocFrenzy · 29/12/2014 09:25

Oh good, another Marmite fan. Sounds a sensible plan
Xmas Smile
Good luck with your 1st FD, Wibbley Do post and let us know how you get on or if you need moral support.

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2014 11:16

Ah, fasting today. And getting on with work.
Feeling flabby. May need to go to the gym shortly!

MazzleDazzle · 29/12/2014 11:20

Welcome Wibbley! Good luck on your first fast. You'll probably find that fasting is easier than you think, it's the stopping after 500 cals that's the tough bit.

For me, and many others, it's easier to skip breakfast and lunch and have a late supper. If you choose carefully, you can have a mountain of delicious food for 500 cals.

I'm fasting today and possibly tomorrow. Really excited about it! It feels great giving my body a rest. I did extra fasts in the run up to XMAS and then had 4 days of guilt free eating. I had the odd pud and a few chocolates, but I didn't gorge on junk if you discount all of the booze.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/12/2014 17:41

I've not been fasting or exercising - though not felt like brekkie many days and both yesterday and today ended up going for a walk and not lunching till well after 2pm.

Summerdaydreams · 29/12/2014 19:47

Hello, I am a newbie, have read 'the fast diet' book and the MN threads and feel that this is something that could suit my lofe. today is my first fast day. God am I struggling, please, please, tell me it gets easier. I used all my will to not pick At a gorgeous macaroni cheese i'd made for the DC and now I have a thumping headache and nausea. I had a hearty butternut squash soup at around half12 and beef stew at 7 ....

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2014 20:05

Hi there summerday
drink more
plenty of water and tea and if needs be a glass of milk
headaches are almost always dehydration

I did a 25 hour fast : but then a lovely calorific supper because I somehow managed to only put on 2lb over the whole of christmas!!

Wibbley · 29/12/2014 21:14

My first fast day has gone quite well Xmas Smile

For lunch I had a cup a soup, then this evening I had one Linda McCartney sausage and a tin of mushy peas. I love mushy peas and they are really filling for the number of calories and I actually felt reasonably satisfied for a while after.

Hungry again now so aiming for an earlyish night so breakfast comes sooner.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/12/2014 00:39

Well done on your 1st FD, Wibbley
I love mushy peas too. On NFDs, you can add them to fish & chips.

SummerDay Many folk have headaches the first few FDS, until their body adapts to fasting. I agree with tip about drinking more water.
I also recommend a teaspoon of Marmite (no bread) mid-morning, plus optionally in the afternoon or evening, if you get hungry then. Marmite replenishes minerals and adds B vits.
Hot Bovril is useful, too and very few cals.

Would you find it easier on FDs to eat with the DCs ? If so, just measure in advance your smaller portion and add extra salad or veg, so it looks the same size meal. Or is it easier / possible to eat directly before or after ?
