Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

I used to go camping with a load of vegetarians and vegans : frying bacon was the bit they most struggled with.
Love bacon Smile

Jolly Very sorry to hear about your MC
Flowers Sad
Your body has had a lot to cope with, so if you find FDs tough before XMas, then try mini-FDs

Thanks everyone! Managed to keep it going, so another FD under my belt. Just have to think that every one is a step towards health, that kept me going today. ''Twas my first really hard fast.

TalkinPeace · 16/12/2014 09:47

Christina Well done, and you are right : Intermittent Fasting is about health. The weight loss for the overweight is just a bonus.
That is why I keep fastin.

Bigchoc Nope, both DH and I had resilience and lasted out till our healthy supper.
polishes halo

BigChocFrenzy · 16/12/2014 18:46

< impressed at halo Xmas Grin >

I do 16:8 or sometimes Fast 5, because I also feel healthier fasting, even though I have fewer FDs now in maintenance.
I'm in an sealed office with colleagues sneezing and coughing over me all year; I used to average 2 colds with fever each winter. Over the last 15 momths, I haven't had any < hurriedly touching wood > and I do feel good.

I think you said you and your DH noticed health benefits, tip and others on these threads have reported reduced IBS etc.
Also, Johnson published several papers over the last few years about improvements in his asthma patients.

Feeling a bit down tonight. DP has been away for a few days... I last saw him on Sat. He was really encouraging about my weight loss so he'd bought me a new dress, but it doesn't fit. He tried to make me feel better but ended up saying that I've been looking really slim recently but today not so much. He's apologised and tried to take it back (he's not a bad guy!) but to no avail really.

Left half of my tea after that. Need to be stricter again, I had breakfast and lunch today for the first time in a few months, but I was hungry and I made sure I was under my calorie limit.

Will be stricter tomorrow.

Hope everyone else is doing better.

JollyGolightly · 16/12/2014 19:45

Thanks BigChoc

It's good to feel in control of my body after a turbulent time, IF is comforting in that respect. I also like that Iusually learn something new when I look at this thread.

Out of interest what is a mini-FD?

TalkinPeace · 16/12/2014 21:01

infinity
planks, crunches, standing up, jogging on the spot
you'll tone those muscles in that extra half inch (and astonishingly fast) and fit the dress by the time he's home.

bigchoc
Halo not helped by coming down with lurgy tonight so chicken and pasta and wine for supper - cos they make me feel better

jolly
Mini FD = staying at around 8-900 calories
they are cool because they mean you can never EVER fail at a fast day Xmas Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 16/12/2014 22:19

infinity You'll fit into that dress soon, even if not necessarily before he returns. Keep doing FDs and follow tip's advice to speed things up by eating to TDEE of your goal TDEE on NFDs.

Exercise helps a bit - try rope skipping intervals, say skip 2 mins, rest 30 secs, repeat. Bulld up how long you can do this

Mini-FDs are 50% of TDEE, but we use the rough guide of sub-1000 cals

Mmm bacon... it must be hard for vegans and veggies, but for the rest of us if it's and FD inhale and 'I can have some tomorrow'.

Breadandwine · 17/12/2014 00:49

Mmm bacon... it must be hard for vegans and veggies

Depends on the reasons for giving up meat, Errol. If it's for animal welfare, you only have to think about how the animal was treated to make the smell sickening rather than enticing!

That's certainly my take on it, anyway!

I know exactly where my bacon comes from - the butcher has the postcodes of his farm suppliers on the wall - they is happy pigs Xmas Smile
As a confirmed meat eater I am very picky about provenance.
My Boxing Day fillet steak will come from a particular bullock yes, really
BUT
A strong awareness of shocking animal welfare standards around the world is one of the reasons I gave up processed meat products from almost all outlets.

ChristinaHendricksGin · 17/12/2014 18:59

Uh. So hard to break out of the "diet" mentality.

Today's fast went well, too well. So well that I thought about not eating at all.

I'm sure some people manage this type of fasting successfully, but it's typical of my run before I can walk mentality. I'm Trying to build something sustainable that will help me lose the weight I need to so I'm healthy and have higher mobility. Not start yet another crash diet. I ate and am finishing off the night at 496.

I'm on day 17, I've never stuck to a health regime like this for so long without having at least one slip. I'm feeling pretty stoked!

Hope everyone's fasting and prep for the festive season is going well. Out of interest is anyone else going to build fast days into the Christmas holidays?

BigChocFrenzy · 17/12/2014 19:31

Well done, Christina

Fasting advice for all:
Rather than zero-cal FDs, I recommend eating your full 500 FD cals (or 650 per FD if you ever do them consecutively) and include plenty of protein. This reduces the risk of losing muscle and lowering TDEE.
Resistance training, e.g. 30 mins weight-lifting 2-3 days per week, further protects muscle.

If you particularly want to maximize the health benefits of fasting, you could optionally have all your cals in one meal, which gives you around 24 hrs on zero cals. Whatever suits you.

Varady's studies showed 25% TDEE (roughly 500 cals for women / 600 for men) is the optimum compromise between fat loss and muscle retention for non-consecutive FDs on ADF. There are no 5:2 studies on this topic, hence why I'm using hers.
Michelle Harvie's studies on consecutive FDs showed success with 650 cals each, hence that number.

Well, good for you, TiP! But, tell me, are they happy to offer their throats to the butcher's knife? Many years short of their life expectancy!

www.viva.org.uk/blog/are-you-baby-eater

Be a confirmed meat eater, by all means, TiP - that's your choice, which I respect - but please don't fall for the 'humane' myth!

TalkinPeace · 17/12/2014 19:38

B&W
I'm all too aware of slaughter and what it entails. I am not squeamish.
Then again I went to a "rescue" farm where they "saved" animals from slaughter
These poor things were five or six years old and riddled with disease because they have been bred to die young.
AND if you no longer have livestock, then you no longer need hedges, fences, copses and all the other things that make the landscape of most of England not look like Arkansas.

However
We'll agree to disagree in an informed manner
and pile in mutually on anybody who says intensive farming is just fine Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 17/12/2014 20:12

We evolved as omnivores and this may have helped us survive when other species with more restricted diets died out.
I enjoy a good vegan meal, but I am happy and feel healthiest as an omnivore. I don't cut out food groups.
I eat more fish than meat - I don't feel empathy for fish, as they are of such low intelligence and without emotions, even for their spawn.

I was planning to lose another 7-10 lbs beyond my pre-pg weight. Eventually, there is no rush really. I'm very happy with the progress I've made so far.

However, I'll have to leave my goal for now, as I got a BFP on Tuesday! So I'll have to leave you friendly bunch until next year, and hope this thread still exists!

Good luck everyone else, you can do it!
