The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Morning everyone. Wondered where you'd gone!

NFD yesterday, was fine. Went to the hospital and got crap news about my wrist and had to have steriod injections. Eurgh. Surgery is looking likely before Christmas.

Couldn't sleep last night. Was shattered but wrist hurt and I just couldn't. Should have got up but didn't want to wake up DP... But he's gone for a bike ride so woke me up at 7am getting ready. He did apologise.

Now I feel sick... Am curled up with a blanket. I hope this FD goes okay. Am due to go and see the local fireworks tonight, but it'll depend on the weather and my willpower... Free fish and chips with entry.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/11/2014 11:26

Sorry to hear about your wrist Infinity That sounds nasty
Have you discussed dates for your op ?

Resisting free fish & chips at a do is very tough. Any chance you could move your FD to tomorrow or Monday instead ?
Alternatively, if you eat nothing else whatsoever today, you could make it a mini-FD.
This WOE has to fit your life to be sustainable, so you move FDs around to suit.

Wow! So many of you have had SVs that I can't keep up. Well done!

Thanks Bimble it's great to be back. This thread is a huge support to me, so if I'm missing there's a fair chance I've never had my head out of the trough ?? !

I'm sorry for your loss Annie. I know planning a funeral is exhausiting. Hopefully you're managing to get some sleep Flowers. Like BC says , you're doing well to manage FDs of any sort at such a tough time.

Interested n how much thin people eat Too! I'll see if I can fine he thread...

After suffering from at least a week of PMT every month and having ravenous hunger, I've taken some online advice: I've cranked up my Evening Primrose Oil and mineral intake. My period came and went and I barely noticed. Hopefully next month will be the same!

As far as eating goes today, I've a chicken casserole in the slow cooker for dinner and have some salad in the fridge for lunch to have with the slow roast tomatoes that are on the oven. Yum, yum! The kids want to bake later. I think I can be trusted not to scoff the lot Blush.

Enjoy your weekend folks!

MazzleDazzle · 08/11/2014 13:42

Poor you infinity. That's rough. If it was my DH I'd have rammed his bycyle pump up his rear Grin. Probably not a wise move for you though as it might exacerbate your wrist further! In all seriousness though, be kind to yourself today. Btw a chip shop portion of fish and chips comes in at only 700 cals. If you don't eat a full portion, it's a fine fast day meal speaks the voice of experience.

Emms79 · 08/11/2014 16:27

Hi there I'm currently following the 5:2 diet, I'm breast feeding my 3 1/2 month old so have been allowing myself extra calories, I've been feeling fine and pretty good actually, just wondering how long it takes to see results, I haven't weighed myself as I know I would be a slave to the scales. Would breast feeding slow down weight loss, like your body would hold onto weight or would this not affect it?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/11/2014 16:49

Oh my God. Lunch at Pizza Hut seems to approximate 1500 calories! Holy crap. Normally this would be ok because it's a NFD and I've still got 300 cals, but DH is halfway through making treacle tart (was on Tom Kerridge's programme a few weeks back) and I neeeeed to eat some. I haven't tried logging it on MFP but I bet it's v v calorific.

I'm also still 2lbs up even after a FD yesterday, grr! DH lost 4lbs overnight bringing his total to 10lb lost, while mine is a measly 3. It's not fair!

TheHoneyBadger · 08/11/2014 17:28

jjust checking in really and sharing my plan that i'm going to allow friday evenings and saturdays to be freer days food/drink wise and on the other days there will be two fasts and careful/healthy choices and well within tdee on the remaining three days.

hoping this will be enough to see consistent loss and yet not to feel too restricted. it also means i will try and avoid grains (including beer) on all days bar friday eve and saturday.

bit of an upset tummy today - not sure if that's a reaction to eating less healthy food last night or just a coincidence. if it's the former no doubt i'll see a pattern emerging over time.

good luck to everyone fasting today

MazzleDazzle · 08/11/2014 18:12

Emms it depends on how much you have to lose (the closer you are to target, the slower it gets) and if your metabolism has been goosed by past yo-yo dieting.

Technically, you need a weekly deficit of 3000 to lose 1lb.

Therefore, if your TDEE is 2000:

  • 5 days at 2000
  • 2 FD at 500
You should lose 1lb per week.

If your TDEE is lower (which most women are) then weight loss will be slower than this.

Too did you succumb to the tart? Incidentally, how much do you and your DH have to lose? That will affect rate of loss. Also, most women have a few days every month where they gan a couple of pounds - where are you on your cycle?

Managed to bake Apple muffins with the kids and only eat 1, but with all the batter licking I called it 2 on MFP! Planned to eat to TDEE today - only 100 cals left! I hope I can make it.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/11/2014 19:26

I did eat a slice of tart, but not an enormous one, and only with cream, not with ice cream as well, which would be normal for me. I haven't had a period since DS was born (he's 4 months), so sadly that is not an excuse for me! It took me going back to work for AF to return after DD was born - I went back to work at 10 months and AF returned exactly 4 weeks later, alas. DD was a total boob monster, though - DS isn't as bad.

I'm 5'2" and starting weight was 11 stone 1. BMI 28. Now weigh 10 stone 11 (BMI 27). DH is 5'11", starting weight 16 stone 6. BMI 32. He's now at 15 stone 8 (BMI 30). So yes, I know he has more to lose than I do, but I've still got a comfortable cushion before I would expect my weight loss to plateau. Oh well, onwards and downwards!

Apple muffins sound awesome, Mazzle!

Chocupid · 08/11/2014 20:17

Ooh Mazzle I suffer the same with PMT, and cause of my ageist all getting very erratic! Can I ask how much Evening primrose oil you take and what's the mineral?

Thanks Bigchoc the fitness event was tough fab, raised lots of money and I got to try 'insanity' can you believe the instructor wore a jumper Shock
Craving chocolate and Aching like mad even after ending with yoga...
so food and early night for me.
Parents visiting tomorow so will fast on Monday with you all.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/11/2014 20:17

Welcome, Emms
Smile
BFers should start at 1000-cal FDs, as advised by Dr Varady & Dr Mosely. You can reduce gradually to around 700 if you wish.
Some BFers start at 500 straight away, but several of those have reported feeling ravenous and totally gorging on NFDs. Any BFer who starts gorging like this should return to 1000 cals.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 08/11/2014 20:27

Cheddar Men almost always lose much more quickly than women on any weight loss regime. This is due to different % of muscle, testosterone, estrogen.

Sounds like you need to ramp things up a bit. I recommend you:

. log your intake for a week and compare it to your (TDEE x 7).
What is your weekly deficit ? Pizza and sweet baked goods are calorie bombs, so on NFDs you may be eating the deficit from FDs.

. calculate the TDEE of your goal weight and aim for this on 3-4 NFDs weekly. This is also excellent training for maintenance portions.

Emms79 · 08/11/2014 20:30

Thank you BigChocFrenzy,

I've been having around 750 cal on FD and being careful (2000 cal) on NFD and to be honest I've felt great, I'm actually in a very good mood and feeling positive, I'm not sure whether I've lost any weight yet but I guess it will take some time and dedication before I will see results. No supply probs either so me and baby are happy ?? x

BigChocFrenzy · 08/11/2014 20:32

for PMT, AF, Peri-Menopause

. Evening Primrose Oil, e.g. Holland & Barrats capsules are good.
Recommended daily amount aroumd 3,000 mg

. Flaxmeal. 30g is suggested daily amount e.g. have half-and-half with porridge oats / oat bran or use it for baking, sprinkle on salads.

Remember it's an oil, so weighs much more than daily dose of a vitamin.

TheHoneyBadger · 08/11/2014 21:23

i cannot recommend agnus castus enough for pmt, irregular cycles, peri menopause, pcos etc. it's prescribed for all these conditions in some countries and has great clinical trial results. here it's a non prescription supplement. it acts directly on the pituatory gland which regulates hormones.

taking it daily at a decent strength reduced my 45 day cycles to near 'normal' ones and had a massive impact on the near pscyhotic pmt i was having.

it's not that expensive and i don't recommend anything else and am not generally a herbal remedy kind of person but it honestly has good results and clinical data to support it.

MazzleDazzle · 08/11/2014 21:30

My EPO capsules are 1 a day, 1500mg, but when I took 1 a day the didn't make a blind but of difference, so I've upped it to 2 a day. It's just a standard multi-vitamin I take with it, Choco. I heard that starflower oil is good too and apparently helps stave off hangovers!

I visited a friend tonight and had one mini-roll, which brought me to TDEE. Alas, no wine for me tonight Sad Wine.

I can't bake to save myself, but this recipe requires no skill at all! I got 16 muffins out of this recipe (at 150 cals each), but my apples were HUGE!

Apple muffins:
200g plain flour
100g caster sugar
50g soft brown sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
90ml skimmed or semi-skimmed milk
80ml vegetable oil
1 large egg, beaten
5 drops vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon of mixed spice
2 large apples - peeled, cored and chopped into small chunks

Put your Apple chunks to the side, chuck everything else in a bowl, mix, add apple, divide between 12 cupcake/muffin cases. Bake for 20 mins at 200 or until golden. Dust with icing sugar. They're lovely and moist, keep well in a sealed box and are great for lunch boxes. Back when I was a porker I used to eat a whole batch of baking in a oner! Blush Who'd have thought I'd ever have to invest in Tupperware for storing backed goods? Shock

MazzleDazzle · 08/11/2014 21:33

Angus castus? Never heard of it, but thanks for the tip! I'm amazed we sell something over the counter that other countries have on prescription! I always see a trip abroad as a chance to take advantage of all the things we can't but over here!

Breadandwine · 08/11/2014 23:18

Don't forget you need to grind flaxseeds to prevent them slipping straight through! Grin

I have mine, ground with sunflower or sesame seeds, with fruit juice in a sort of cold porridge. Sprinkled with a few flaked almonds, it's rather nice.

I used to have this for my breakfast, but, since giving up breakfast and moving to 16:8, I now have it at lunchtime. (Means I'm eating less bread than ever! Sad)

Pizza and sweet baked goods are calorie bombs

Bought ones, maybe - but check out my pizza recipe on the 5:2 recipe thread. 920 or so cals for a 25cm cheese and tomato pizza - and you know what's gone in it! Smile

Breadandwine · 08/11/2014 23:57

Maz, thanks for that! I shall veganise that recipe and make it tomorrow.

And I'll report back.

I bought some Ashmead Kernels at Taunton Farmer's market on Thursday - they'll go well in an apple muffin!

Justtrying · 09/11/2014 07:13

Hi everyone, can I join this thread, done my first week of 5 2 this week and just weighed myself and have lost 4lbs, hooray. I have also reduced the wine quite a lot so I'm sure that's added to it too as I generally have a quite a balanced diet but drink too much and I'm not good at portion control.

Just about to plan this weeks fast days which will be Wednesday and Saturday, would normally avoid a weekend but nights out/ very long work days preclude it this week.

I'm aiming to lose half a stone by the beginning of dec to fit in a ten year old dress for a posh do. With at least a stone to lose before a cruise for our second honeymoon in march.

I started at 10 stone 2 and I'm 5'2. Need to also work on upping the exercise and trying to flatten my rather large tummy, any tips?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 09/11/2014 08:09

I know, I know! Blush Oh well. BigChoc, I'm going to do a week (from here on in) eating very carefully at TDEE on my NFDs and aim for about 800 cals on my FD and see how I get on. I've also persuaded DH to start Shredding again as soon as his cold has gone. I came in at 2060 calories yesterday, possibly a bit more, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been - I didn't have breakfast or dinner (apart from the treacle tart). I did drink 3 litres of water as well.

Today is going to be difficult - DS, normally such a peaceful, placid little baby, started to cry at 4am and wouldn't stop. He got so loud that he woke the entire house including 2 yo DD, who came through and tried to help (bless her). After much frantic singing and cuddling, we got back to sleep at about quarter to 6. DS woke up again at 7 and DD at 8. Gaaah.
