The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

By 'those' I meant the evil Walkers Sensations nuts. Not pistachios, which I luffs very much.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/12/2014 19:05

Sounds like you're in the 5:2 groove now, Christina
A small handful of nuts makes an excellent, healthy NFD dessert

Hang on a bit longer Friday fasters. Tomorrow you can enjoy the weekend and finish the Christmas shopping & write the last cards

OP posts:
ChristinaHendricksGin · 12/12/2014 23:03

Woot! Last fast day of the week. Now just need to stay in TDEE for the weekend and I've completed week 2 of 4:3!

I'm afraid to jinx it, but this seems so doable for me. Probably because it's so customisable and flexible. The fast days are a bit of a challenge but they're managable because I know I can have whatever I like the next day. Perversely knowing I can have a chocolate bar means I don't really want one.

All psychological Wink

Breadandwine · 13/12/2014 01:34

Hi Christina!

If you check out the early threads on 5:2 fasting, you'll find many posters making the same discovery that you're just making - that we all made. It is doable!

And it's fun along the way!

I'm coming up to three years, soon - and I've never felt so good! I can't see myself ever giving up at least one fast per week!

TalkinPeace · 13/12/2014 13:34

Christina
In one of the really early threads a poster realised that she was allowed a ham cheese and pickle sandwich with crisps on the side
for the first time in her adult life
with no guilt
she did not manage to finish it Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2014 14:22

Depressing to learn how some women have deprived themselves all their adult life (often without achieving their weight goals)
One of the reasons 5:2 works is that some of the time (not every NFD) you can eat what you want.
This relieves both psychological and physical stress.

On another thread, a poster just mentioned this app

which might be really useful for those whose mental relationship with food needs work ...

ToesAndFingers · 13/12/2014 20:54

After moaning about weight loss slowing down, this week all of a sudden I've lost 1.5 lbs! 2 more lbs will get me to my pre-pg weight Smile

And I've had another unplanned FD this week. Woke up full of cold and just didn't have any appetite... Had a couple cheese sandwiches and that's it. (Obviously I didn't plan to fast). I'd rather stuff my face with chocolate cake and later regret it than be ill Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2014 21:47

Well done on the SV, toes Only 2lb away ! Is that your final goal, or do you want to get below your pre-pg weight ?
Many people lose in fits and starts, rather than linearly each week

I hope your cold soon goes. May tomorrow you'll fancy some warm, nourishing veg soup

OP posts:
ChristinaHendricksGin · 13/12/2014 21:54

breadandwine great to hear that you're still enjoying this WOE three years in. Especially inspiring as I'm a transitioning vegan - just two more animal products to wean myself off. Getting there, albeit slowly Smile

BigChoc Apparently the average woman is on a diet for 36 years of her life. Subtract childhood and adolescence from that and it's a deeply depressing statistic.

Talkin thanks for the app recommendation, I must check it out Smile

Toesandfingers congrats on your loss! Hope you feel better soon though, there's nothing like a cold to make you feel miserable. I know you didn't feel like eating today but try to mind yourself in as many ways as possible.

ChristinaHendricksGin · 14/12/2014 00:00

Can I just thank everyone here for being so supportive? I know you've probably said these things over and over, but it means a lot that you all take the time to help a total stranger, particularly at this busy time of year. It's made the journey so far a lot easier. Xmas Smile

TalkinPeace · 14/12/2014 15:57

Oi! Christina You is busted Thanks
BUT
the magic of these threads is 24/7 mutual support

The blunt angle is that if we need a day of release from somebody's stress, we do not click on the thread
if we do not feel like dealing with it we do not post
BUT
there are thousands of us, so at any time
SOMEBODY will log in
SOMEBODY will post
and when each of us has the energy, we are that someone
and its free
and we learn from what we say

what's not to like Grin

ChristinaHendricksGin · 14/12/2014 17:10

What am I busted for?!?!

cleanmachine · 14/12/2014 17:23

Hi everyone. I'm still stuck in the most stubborn plateau. Nfd here and have been trying to ray within an 8 hour window. I'm hoping to change my fasting days next week and then doing a 6:1 overt xmas week just to change things up a bit.

ChristinaHendricksGin · 14/12/2014 17:28

Sorry about the plateau. Kudos on the eight hour window. I seem to be either able to do the eight hour window or 4:3, not both. Maybe with practice.

NFD here too. Making a roast dinner, looking forward to roast potatoes, carrot and parsnip mash, peas, corn, stuffing and gravy. Yum. Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 14/12/2014 18:43

Christina You have done very well indeed in only a couple of weeks: you have got used to fasting and lost some weight.
I suggest on NFDS you try 14:10, i.e. a 10-hr eating window. Some women especially do better on this.

clean What is your TDEE and what is your average NFD intake ?
If you can calculate these, it would help us analyse whether your plateau is say due to NFD calories being too high, or your body taking a while to adapt, or some other cause.

ChristinaHendricksGin · 15/12/2014 12:05

Ok, seventh fast day.

It's my first time doing it during an attack - an exacerbation of my symptoms. I'm in bits, was almost crying last night.

Haven't eaten anything yet - currently in bed under electric blanket feeling sorry for myself.

Happy Monday everyone Sad

InfinitySeven · 15/12/2014 12:56

Morning everyone.

Sorry you're feeling rough, Christina :(

Had a bad weekend. Fasted on Saturday accidentally, but then was starving by 9pm so had a KFC. Loved every bite, but felt bad afterwards.

Yesterday I had cereal for lunch and chicken for tea, which was quite nice, and today I'm holding out to just have tea. Or at least that's the plan. I'm starving, so it's a fight!

In my second full week at work, so that's quite good. I'm enjoying it! I struggle when everyone goes on lunch, though. There is a beautiful looking packet of homemade cinnamon straws in front of me, and they look delicious. I've looked at them so many times today...I can't move them because they aren't mine. It's a proper test in willpower! God knows if I'll last the day.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/12/2014 14:44

Infinity NEVER feel "bad" about eating something. There are no "banned" foods and these are not the Food Police threads. Adapt 5:2 to your lifestyle & preferences, so it is sustainable.

Weight loss on 5:2 depends on what you eat & drink over several weeks.
If a particular meal brings you way over TDEE occasionally, that doesn't matter for most folk, or can even be beneficial.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 15/12/2014 14:50

Christina I'm sorry to hear your MS is being a bugger again. I hope someone is around to look in on you and help.
If you find it easier, forget the FDs until you feel better and just maintain for a few days: aim to eat nutritious food - no junk - roughly within TDEE.
Whatever you decide, remember to DRINK WATER.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 15/12/2014 14:53

Porridge and a couple of ready meals keeps most folk within TDEE, without counting or bother.

TalkinPeace · 15/12/2014 17:13

Has had the hardest fast day ever, ever EVER
because DS was off sick from school and decided to cook himself a bacon sarnie for lunch.
DH had to go and hide up the garden from the smell.
I had to go shopping.
Note to self : the smell of cooking bacon when you are hungry is an absolute killer Smile

JollyGolightly · 15/12/2014 21:01

Hello, I am back on 5:2 after a miscarriage. Feel bleurch due to mainlining lard during the ups and downs of the last few weeks and am determined to fit in 3 or 4 fast days between now and Christmas. I've found today absolutely fine - it's definitely easier coming back to it than it was to start in the first place. I have been very thirsty though, despite lots of water and herbal tea.

MazzleDazzle · 15/12/2014 21:16

I'd have thrown the towel in TiP, no question. Who can resist a bacon sandwich? Mmmmm! I'm salivating at the though...

It's bloody freezing here! I just can't take heat. Even my DH is cold and he is forever turning down the thermostat. The long awaited wood burner is getting fitted on Wed. Hip, hip hooray!

Woke up this morning determined to have a successful FD and I've sailed through. I'm going to try really hard this week! Last week I had parties, nights away, meals out and takeaways so my jeans are feeling rather tight!

Feels wonderful to know that after a few FDs my jeans will fasten easily!

It's great to see some new folks jumping in at this time of year. Better that than to wait until January!

Breadandwine · 15/12/2014 21:24

TiP, as a vegan I can give you several ways to overcome your love of bacon and its smell.

However, I won't post them on here, I'm sure you're more than capable of researching them for yourself.
