Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 47: School’s out for summer! Holidays creating havoc with your fasting? DCs driving you to drink and donuts? Help is at hand right here...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Well, a semi success story today. I went to GBK (naughty I know) after doing 3 FD's this week. Had a satsuma for brekkie and in GBP ordered a veggie burger (least calorific burger on the menu). Only managed two bites then was full, so only had to count a quarter of the calories :D

Seems like my appetite is changing because a few months ago I would have eaten a whole burger plus chips plus maybe a milkshake on top of it!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 13:22

Jelly No such thing as naughty here. Sounds like a good NFD.
If your appetite is changing, that is an NSV, too.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 13:33

Infinity I hate programs like that, because they can cause unrealistic expectations of how quickly one should lose weight.
Crash diets are dangerous.

A jump-start for say the first 2 weeks is fine, but the consensus among doctors and nutritionists is that a safe loss longterm is 1-2lb weekly.
More than 3lb weekly has these risks:

. Gallbladder damage / gallstones - the most common side effect
, Damage to heart, liver, kidney, thyroid
. Massive metabolism drop, hence rapid regain of lost weight and more
. Increased risk of Type 2 diabetes
. Hair loss
. Large amounts of saggy skin folds
. Most of the weight loss is not fat, but includes too much lean tissue

BauerTime · 06/11/2014 13:42

four yes cramps (assume you mean stomach) were what I got before each episode but it never went on for more than a few days.

If you are getting other types of cramp (e.g. legs) then this is your body telling you its dehydrated and may need some fluids if you cant keep anything down or its going straight through you much longer.

Hope you feel better soon though.

BadPenny · 06/11/2014 15:24

Hello all! I see this is a day time thread... kept checking back last night and hoping I hadn't mortally offended everyone with self-absorbed post that didn't say hi properly.

Will definitely take measurements. Today is second NFD and once again I'm free of hunger and cravings so doubtless eating less and more healthily than on an average day.

Hope the PP above with D&V is better soon. It's so miserable. Second all advice above re rehydration and eating bland stuff...

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 16:34

BadP Post as much about yourself as you like. Vent if you want, whatever helps.

yes, most of us sleep during the UK night and many of us work ft, so you might have to wait a few hours for replies.

Badpenny
THis thread has people from all over the world and folks with big kids, little kids, no kids to the posting hours can be erratic
(a year or so ago we had a group of far east / down under people who chatted to each other at 4am UK time)
but
everybody is welcome
and the more we know about people, the more we can think laterally to keep them jollied along Grin

InfinitySeven · 06/11/2014 17:08

Gave in and had a malteser. Just one, but it's broken my fast and now my stomach is rumbling like anything.

DP will be home in two hours, so I need to hold out until then for tea. My own fault!

Bad I'm enjoying NFD's too! I'm definitely eating less, and healthier, on them. It's rubbing off on DP, too.

Big Yeah, it didn't set a good example...part of you thinks, oohh 60lbs in 60 days! But it did look hard. She cried a lot, and she didn't quite hit her target because she only lost 1lb for 2 weeks, (although I have no idea how, considering she was burning 7000 calories a day in the gym!). I need to find better daytime TV to work too... I was avoiding the live vasectomy!

fourwoodenchairs · 06/11/2014 18:06

Thanks all. Been in bed since 5pm, going to try and sleep it off. Not had any cramps for a couple of hours, just have a head ache now.

Looking forward to actually starting this diet properly next week!

jellypi3 · 06/11/2014 18:52

Right quick 1st week update. Last Wednesday I was 93.5kg.

Today, after 3 FD's, I am 90.6!!!

I can't believe it. I've weighed myself at the same time as last week. I wasn't going to weight myself because AF arrived 5 days early but I'm so happy. I know I won't lose almost 3kg a week but still, it's great to see a result after so little time.

InfinitySeven · 06/11/2014 19:08

Congrats Jelly, that's incredible :)

Four I hope you feel better soon :) Headaches suck.

Sigh. FD. Had that one malteser and then forced myself to have nothing. Usually start tea at 6:30, so it's ready for when DP comes home...but had heard nothing. Called, nothing. Notice his location hasn't updated from London, but it does that if he's on the tube. Waited a bit longer, not eating anything...

He's just called. He's out at a work thing (that presumably he forgot about, I certainly did), and he had a mouthful of food when he called :(.

Half an hour to cook myself something now, and I waited for nothing. I'm so so tempted by takeaway... I won't though. Sitting on my hands while the oven heats up.

jellypi3 · 06/11/2014 19:19

Have a bath or read a book infinity. Don't give up

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 19:33

Well done vvv Best wishes to your DD.

Great start, Jelly Pat yourself on the back.
Yes, some weeks you may plateau or even temporarily gain during AF, but the longterm average is a safe 1lb weekly.

That's tough, Infinity Hang in there and complete your FD.
Chant the 5:2 mantra "You can have it tomorrow"

BauerTime · 06/11/2014 19:34

Step away from the menus infinity!!!!!

Ive struggled today on my 6th FD. Was really cold at work and drunk too much tea then felt sick. Also got a headache, not sure if it was fast related or I'm coming down with something as the whole office was sniffly today.

Had my Ryvitas and Philadelphia again for lunch and just had a cheapy lasagne ready meal for dinner but had a slice of bread with it too and so I've probably gone at least 50 cals over my 500. I'm not too fussed though as I was very close to blowing today's fast off altogether so still a job well done!

Just weighing up whether to get on the scales tomorrow or not or leave it till next week as id planned fortnightly weigh-ins but not sure I can wait!

MazzleDazzle · 06/11/2014 19:51

Bad we're a friendly bunch! Like Tip said, the more you tell us about yourself the better. If every post was only about calories, this thread would be rather dull!

Well last night's fireworks turned into a bit of a munch. Too much to count really, but I only ate 500 cals during the day, so hopefully that will compensate!

DH is away for 3 weeks, so I've the 2 DC to look after on my own. It's fine the days I'm not working, but getting them ready, juggling pick ups and drop offs and coming home with a pile of paperwork is challenging! Also my youngest DD has been waking through the night Angry and an old ankle injury bizarrely wakes me up, even though it's fine during the day Hmm. Fingers crossed for a full night's sleep tonight!

And I almost forgot to mention that I fasted today! It's been easy peasy! Wasn't hungry all day and then ate a chicken Caesar salad, which came in at 275 cals. I'm full so will stop there - might as well quit while I'm ahead! Might have a warm milky drink before bed though to help me sleep since it's so bloody cold!

With regards to the inspirational thread, it's my one year anniversary at the end of the month! I won't be at goal, but I'm the thinnest and fittest I've been in seven years, which is something to be pleased about. I definitely second BC's suggestion that newbies take your measurements - the tape measure is more reliable than the scales! Good luck!

fourwoodenchairs · 06/11/2014 20:02

I'm sorry if your eating (or not Grin) but I have blood in my diarrhoea now - that's not normal is it?

BauerTime · 06/11/2014 20:18

No four, call NHS direct or whatever its called and get some advice. Tell them how long this has been going on for and you should get sent to an out of hours doctors.

TalkinPeace · 06/11/2014 20:22

fourwooden
sounds like noro - call NHS direct PDQ

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 20:56

Four Yes, phone so you can get professional advice
Hope you soon recover from that nasty bug, Four Do let us know how you get on
Flowers

MazzleDazzle · 07/11/2014 06:40

Did you call NHS 24 Four?

I hope you're feeling better today. Thanks

fourwoodenchairs · 07/11/2014 07:12

Hi everyone, sorry I didn't update.

I called and I had a really sweet lady who explained the blood was probably irritation around my anus. She checked all my symptoms and said it definitely sounds like gastro but because of the blood I must see GP this morning and send off a stool sample.

I took some immodium last night and slept okay. I feel okay at the moment but I'm lying down and haven't got up yet...

Thanks all for the well wishes x

BauerTime · 07/11/2014 07:19

Yes get down the docs this morning four, hope you feel ok when you get up!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 07/11/2014 07:43

Think we need a new thread soon! A Winter-themed one?

FD 3 complete for me....just had another day of soups. Not too bad but felt a little hungrier this time (PMT!).

jelly Well done on your loss! I still haven't weighed myself. I might not start...just wait for the clothes to start loosening.

four Hope you feel better soon!

Bauer well done on completing another FD. Going 50 over is no big deal, surely.

Infinity did you manage to stay away from the takeaway? Grin

Welcome, penny!

Mazzle One year! That's incredible! Congrats!

BauerTime · 07/11/2014 08:24

Thanks Saga, I put it through MFP and I actually went 75kcal over, BUT I weighed myself this morning and I'm another 2lbs down! That's 4lb in 3 weeks.

DH unfortunately didn't lose anything but I just said to him that it might not show on the scale until next week so don't lose heart. I'm hoping next week he'll have a nice 2-3 lb loss to make up for it.

Well dont on your 3rd FD.
