Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 47: School’s out for summer! Holidays creating havoc with your fasting? DCs driving you to drink and donuts? Help is at hand right here...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Thanks, bread for the arthritis link...I'll have DH read it! Thanks

Plan Your Maintenance

This is for those who are nearing their goal weight:

To successfuly keep that hard-won weight loss and lovely new shape, you need a definite maintenance plan

This can be 5:2 / 6:1 / 16:8 /..... but needs to be monitored for the first few weeks to check it really works.

Important: If you have lost a few stone, then your TDEE may initially be 15% lower than someone who is naturally your new weight, i.e. without dieting.
This is common to all diets and it may take a year or more for your TDEE to rise fully. So, be aware.

Many folk think they can maintain just by "being careful." However, this doesn't work for most of us: people tend to slip into the same old habits, i.e. calorie intake, which made them overweight.

Whenever you put on 5lb again, say after vacations, restart 5:2 immediately and it won't take long to return to goal.

vvviola · 04/11/2014 23:09

So, DD2 now has an allergic reaction to the antibiotics from her infection. We just cannot catch a break.

Trying to avoid the snack cupboard (easier since I only bought snacks I don't particularly like when I went shopping - makes the willpower required a little less).

I came across a quinoa, spinach and tuna salad recipe so I might make that for lunch and see whether it will be low cal enough for FD dinner tomorrow.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/11/2014 23:30

Oh vvviola, that's tough. Sad The salad sound good though.

cleanmachine · 05/11/2014 07:07

Oh vviola hope your dd gets well soon.

Talkin thanks for the tips. I really must start exercising again. Im going to try change things up a bit this week.

jellypi3 · 05/11/2014 07:49

Morning all. Ok doing FD 3 today, tempted to do a 4:3 this week. I had a really bad day yesterday because I was taken to lunch with clients at work. 2 glasses of wine and a glass of prosecco, plus a 3 course steak dinner! I don't even want to think of the calories!!

Today's plan is water all day and dinner tonight if I can manage it. :)

BetsyBell · 05/11/2014 08:23

HoneyBadger / SAF! Nice to hear from you, I wondered how you were :) Hope the surgery and all went ok, understandably that's when you dropped off these threads I think.

I'm not on these threads much these days having found a balance of healthy eating, training and the odd bit of 16:8 that works well for me. I'm surprised, but delighted, to be where I am. I never really thought I would be entering my 40s (next year) all fit, lean and healthy. rather wish I'd done this when my skin had more elastin mind, but we can't have it all Wink

I'm slightly in shock that this summer titled thread has lasted so long, though I suspect that's because laska lured everyone off to her backsliders thread Grin

OP posts:
TheHoneyBadger · 05/11/2014 08:36

elastic in skin? yeah, i don't think i have that Grin glad it's worked out for you so well betsy. i turn 39 in less than two weeks so i have a year to set the scene for how i enter my forties - there are a few things that need sorting including the weight loss and exercise.

surgery went well as in it has sorted my back problems 99% and the remaining 1% could be normal 'we all get tension/soreness sometimes' stuff. so i'm definitely glad i did it. went from that into a cancer scare after they found dodgy cells in the removed tissue and then from that to redundancy rounds which eventually came to my door and the fasting and focus on weight and health just slipped under the bus.

back now though Smile

i've got on the scales today to find they haven't really moved despite not eating yesterday but if i recall correctly i sometimes used to find a 24hr delay in it showing on the scales. going to go through to at least lunchtime anyway as i never eat breakfast and i'm not feeling hungry even now weirdly after what, 36hrs? my body clearly really really needed a break.

MazzleDazzle · 05/11/2014 09:45

Morning!

That's tough with your daughter vvv. It must be a real strain on you all.

Successful FD yesterday. Didn't eat until 9pm when I had some new potatoes covered in bolognaise with some salad leaves. I was ratty with the kids at tea time, but other than that I coped pretty well. I even managed to avoid picking food at a children's birthday party!

As well as throwing myself back into losing weight I'm also on the mother of all budgets! I'm fortunate in that my DH and I have decent jobs and, other than our mortgage, we are debt free, but we definitely spend too much money and are therefore skint! I've given us a really strict budget to stick to. DH is away workin for the next 3 weeks, so it's just me and the kids. Determined to be in the black at the end of the month!

Working this afternoon and I've invited friends round for fireworks and some pizza. I need to be careful of the calories!

It's great that you're so confident with yourself Betsy, saggy bits aside! Wink

TheHoneyBadger · 05/11/2014 10:03

shhh don't mention saggy bits. they are best dealt with by deadly silence and denial.

annielewis · 05/11/2014 10:04

Hi everyone - I am another one who has popped over from the backsliders thread. (waves at honey and choc)

I was here ages ago but fell off too - although have managed to stay roughly where I was on the scales. So just need to continue now!

Have had a shitty week (death in family) but have decided to fast today, although will not beat myself up if I don't manage it.. just wanted to mark place back over here to try and shift maybe half a stone or so by christmas. Current weight 11st 2 ish and I'm a short arse at 5ft3 so need it shifted!

Good luck any other fasters today - am likely to be back later to distract myself...... :)

Chocupid · 05/11/2014 11:52

Thanks for that Honey nuts and bananas are a good idea for between the classes, if I last the day.
Wow Look at you going from a 'I can't fast' to a LOF!! Back with a bang eh.

The veg bubble and squeak sounds amazing B&W I think I'll try that tonight for my FD dinner, mmm comfort food!

And thanks for the tip on base layers at decathlon Tip I love that shop!

Good luck anyone fasting today!

Chocupid · 05/11/2014 12:00

Oops missed your post Annie good luck today!

I'm trying not to eat till dinner.

TheHoneyBadger · 05/11/2014 12:32

i'm a bit all or nothing choc. i seem to recall that my issue on FD was that once i started eating my appetite was unleashed and i found it really hard to stick to 500 so a full fast is probably better for me.

fingers crossed for the scales being encouraging tomorrow. will aim for a light eating day today.

TheHoneyBadger · 05/11/2014 12:32

GOOD LUCK to all of today's fasters btw! sorry, i'm a bit self obsessed as i'm just getting started again Blush

annielewis · 05/11/2014 14:54

bollocks - this is not going to go well - am really feeling hungry, but also chilly and a bit emotional - all classic FD stuff isn't it!!

Had the bubble and squeak concoction for lunch and it was yumm but should have stayed fasting as have now unleashed the monster and want to keep eating!!

Think I may have to do full day fasts too Honey or at least not eat anything until dinner time.

Have been over reading the inspirational thread to spur me on, there are really some amazing stories on there, truly inspirational stuff!!

jellypi3 · 05/11/2014 15:29

Keep going annie :) I'm trying a new type of FD today, I have been having 3 small meals but today I'm trying to last till dinner time to eat my 500 cals (gonna just get a ready meal from tesco as today's FD wasn't planned and so have nothing ready). I'm hungry but drinking water constantly to keep down headaches and pangs!

TheHoneyBadger · 05/11/2014 15:31

i can't cope with lunch annie.

you can still do this though. can you go for a walk, have a bath, listen to a relaxation track? basically anything to take you out of the moment and obsessing on food and switch you into a different state?

TheHoneyBadger · 05/11/2014 15:31

if worst comes to worst a spoon of marmite in boiling water can satisfy the 'flavour' or salt need that comes on sometimes.

annielewis · 05/11/2014 16:14

Thanks - I've just had a spoonful of bovril (10 cals) and that's done the trick for now, going to try some warm water with Lemon as I think its part dehydration as well.

Southeastdweller · 05/11/2014 17:20

Welcome back honey and annie. I'd like to mention that some of us old-timers have posted our stories on an Inspirational thread Smile

TalkinPeace · 05/11/2014 17:45

Yeah, but still no hench pictures of you Southeast Wink

TheHoneyBadger · 05/11/2014 18:27

i have had two helpings of spaghetti bolognese today (was careful to remove and remove fat from the mince) after yesterdays fast. not feeling the need to eat loads or particularly bad stuff but it was nice to have a hearty portion of pasta. will try to avoid it for a while now but don't want to ban anything.

i feel ready for bed! think tomorrow i will just go with a light day and may try to do another fast on friday.

vvviola · 05/11/2014 18:28

Thanks for all the good wishes for DD. We're almost 24 hours since her last antibiotics and she's finally beginning to look a bit better. The downside for poor DH is that he won't get much work done while he's home looking after her as she's really perked up!

FD planned today.

jellypi3 · 05/11/2014 18:51

380 calories today :) managed to make it to dinner with no food!!!
