Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Thanks for all the tips on mashed veg :) I'm just having it because I fancy it lol!

FD 2 done!! I think I need a medal. I bought DP an XL bacon double cheeseburger from Burger King. I didn't even steal a chip. It smelt so good but I stopped myself

Ended the day on 314 calories. Should I eat a snack before bed to bump to 500 or just leave on 314

jellypi3 · 03/11/2014 21:53

Actually I lie I ended it on 230 calories!

BigChocFrenzy · 03/11/2014 22:03

< Formal award of King Willpower medal to Jelly for resisting whoppers > Smile
If you don't feel hungry, no need to eat just to reach the 500. If you do eat, make it something worthwhile, not junk.

That feeling of well-being is an NSV (Non-Scale Victory) Saga
Some people do find IF / 5:2 is like flicking a switch or reset button. I think this is because of the health & metabolic benefits of fasting. They either need / enjoy these more. That is separate from the weight loss.
Several of us maintaining experienced this, which is why IF in some form is our longterm WOL.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/11/2014 22:10

A couple of the low-cal ready meals I've had on FDs have been sausages with mashed root veg (one sainsbos, one Kirsty's Kitchen or some such name) - in both cases plenty of gravy - I always bed my FD dinner on a mound of dark greens so they worked well and the mashes were pretty filling.

Southeastdweller · 03/11/2014 22:21

I agree with having a root veg mash in place of a potato version. I can't be bothered to cook one myself but M&S do a very tasty carrot and swede crush which they add seasoning to, and a little butter. It's about 200 cals a pack and very filling.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/11/2014 22:34

I hope your DD recovers soon, vvv That does sound nasty, poor child
Poor you as well, with the worry.

Breadandwine · 03/11/2014 23:32

Great stuff, everyone!

About mashed veg. I love the stuff - I mean, if you throw in a variety of veg along with some potato and fry it up, it's just bubble and squeak, right? Good for you!

As a vegan, I've always got nutritional yeast (nooch - it's like low-cal cheesy flakes) on hand, so I'd add a dessertspoon or two of this, along with some spicy flavourings, just to jazz things up a little.

On a fast day I'd give the frying pan a few squirts of One-cal, spread the mash quite thin and fry it on a low heat until it develops a good crust to give it some texture.

I began a 24hr LOF at 6 tonight, so I might do that for tomorrow's dinner - calorie count it and stick it on the recipe thread.

Saga, sorry to hear of your DH's arthritis. But there's evidence that a plant-based diet can ameliorate the condition.

MazzleDazzle · 04/11/2014 09:49

Morning folks!

I've been slacking from the old 5:2 of late, hence the absence from here!

Great to see you guys are still all chugging away and there's some new folks too!

I was reading over my stats yesterday and, give or take the odd 7lb gain and subsequent loss, I've basically been maintaining for the last 6 months. Never in my life have I maintained, so I'm actually chuffed.

That said, I want to get losing again! Today is the beginning of THE FINAL STAGE. The last kick to get to target.

I intend to log in here EVERY day, like I did in the beginning and to account for every morsel that passes my lips.

Anyway, I'm off to bootcamp class this morning and today is going to be a successful FD too.

I'm looking forward to getting caught up with this thread to find out how you're all doing. Catch you later!

vvviola · 04/11/2014 09:59

Epic post eaten by phone. Summary: not entirely successful FD due to DD's illness and time pressures. But did 16:8, v light lunch, carb-free light dinner and a couple of ginger nuts with my tea

Need to keep up will power tomorrow as am home with DD2 all day and too close to snacks. Don't want to sabotage my NFD.

jellypi3 · 04/11/2014 11:09

Well i felt really good this morning. I also made sure yesterday I drank water constantly throughout the day, so I didn't have a headache! Horrah! :)

Feel much more positive about the 5:2 this time round. Just wish I could exercise to compliment it! :(

BauerTime · 04/11/2014 11:33

Morning all 5:2ers!

Just checking in on FD number 5, only 2 cups of tea so far today but looking forward to a small 150ish calorie snack at lunchtime (2 Ryvitas and a Philadelphia lightest snack pot).

As an update to yesterday's post that I had returned to my pre 5:2 weight after an indulgent weekend, I weighed myself this morning and my weight loss has come back (minus 2oz) so I'm well chuffed that I haven't totally ruined it by having a blow out.

InfinitySeven · 04/11/2014 12:10

Doing a half fast today. Couldn't sleep for hunger last night, so ended the day at 620. Will aim for around the same today, but don't want to eat too much. Need to cancel yesterday out!

Still, I feel a bit lighter today. Not much, but a bit. Onwards and upwards!

flancake · 04/11/2014 13:25

Just about to go out for that lunch date now appleblossom Wink though will be sticking with the healthier stuff...

appleblossom23 · 04/11/2014 14:14

Oooh have a lovely time treacle!

Yesterday's fast was good - I actually didn't feel hungry at all. Ate some boiled eggs on toast at tea time because the children were eating and I didn't want to not. Thought I might get consumed by homework/bath time/bed time and end up ravenous. Mfp said I had a lot of cals left so I had a bowl of cereal before bed. Not ideal, but we had very little food in! Tesco man has been this morning with loads of lovely stuff Smile

I haven't weighed myself and am not really planning to for a while. I'm already at a healthy weight, just a few pounds (maybe 7-10) over what I used to be before the last baby. There aren't any batteries in the scales and to be honest I'm as interested in the health benefits as the weight issue! I could be classed (even if only superficially) as healthy for the rest of my life at the weight I am, but at the last check I had 28% body fat. The other markers for wellness I guess are all ones you can only see via bloods or sophisticated scans, and therefore I don't know if I'm at risk or if this approach is helpful but if 6 weeks of 5:2 reduces my weight and/or body fat, I think I'd be happy to do 6:1 forever! It honestly hasn't been hard. And there seems to be good evidence that fasting produces health benefits. If it turns out not to be the case I can always revert to a diet of chocolate and cakes Grin

Sorry for epic post!! Hope the fasting people are feeling strong and the feasters are really enjoying delicious grub

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 04/11/2014 18:36

Hi all,

Glad everyone who fasted yesterday got through it and the FD'ers today are going strong. Not long til the day is over...what's the motto? "You can have it tomorrow!"

NFD for me today so just rounded off the day with a jacket potato with tuna and a MASSIVE salad with apple and cucumber and other healthy goodness.

Feeling good!

TheHoneyBadger · 04/11/2014 18:54

hello - i used to be on these threads then fell out of the habit of fasting after a major surgery a year and a bit ago (betsybell you may remember me as SAF? think we started around the same time).

today is my first fast back on the wagon. i eased into it by having a few days of light eating and more healthy choices and today i haven't eaten yet but i have poured a glass of red wine (not a great choice for breaking the fast i know Grin ).

i'm trying to leave eating till as late as possible, half hoping to leave it altogether and get an early night but if not i have choices of what i could have lined up to stay within cals.

today has been surprisingly easy given how much i've been putting off and dreading fasting again. a few days of lighter eating and making healthy choices does seem to be a good way to ease in for me.

ideally i'd like to lose a stone and a half but realistically i'd be happy with a stone and keeping it off easily and then possibly very slowly losing the rest if the lifestyle changes lead that way. not sure itms.

anyway big wave, especially to others on a fast day today - we're nearly there!

Chocupid · 04/11/2014 19:55

Hi Honey just posted on backsliders thread to see if you had managed it (funny I did say get to bed ha!)
Well done to you. Grin
It seems very quiet there... so I'm back over here for motivation and support too, not stalking you honest!!

I've been struggling lately too, (hence the migration onto backsliders)
I can't seem to get 2 FD's in, I exercise routinely no problem, maybe that's why I sabotage FD's as I think I can get away with it, but I know you can't out train a bad diet right Bigchoc?
but am going for it tomorrow, I need 2 this week to reset.
Im doing a charity fitness quest on Saturday which is a whole day of classes of metafit, spin, kettles insanity etc, any suggestions on what to take shakes or fruit?

Anyone fasting tomorrow?

Chocupid · 04/11/2014 19:56

Sorry it deleted my 'hello again all'

TheHoneyBadger · 04/11/2014 20:13

chocupid - bananas? advocado? nuts? dense nutrition in light portions. i didn't think you were stalking me Grin - still haven't eaten and thinking i'm going to leave it till tomorrow. i don't feel hungry or empty tbh - i think my body is happy to have a break at last.

hope your fast tomorrow goes well.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2014 20:31

Welcome back, HoneyBadger

One more push, Mazzle

apple Fasting reduces inches, i.e. body fat, but often also helps add muscle. Your body shape and composition should improve, but if you are already a healthy weight, the scales may not change much.
Monitor your waist, hips and clothes fit.

Breadandwine · 04/11/2014 20:46

Hi Maz and Badger - welcome back to your spiritual home! The only way you should leave this thread again is to go to the Maintenance thread. Smile

See you there soon!

Well, I made a sort of bubble and squeak, but I cocked it up by putting most of my veg in the sauce leaving just broccoli and cauliflower. However, it did taste pretty good and I'll do it again.

So, bubble&squeak - 100g each of potato, cauli and broccoli + 10g smoked paprika and 10g of nooch; total, including the low-cal spray = 185cals.

With my veg curry coming in at 107 and half the B&S my dinner came to exactly 200 cals. That is, until I went back out into the kitchen and scarfed half of the remainder of the
B&S. So that gave me an extra 46 cals - plus a very tight belt Grin!

Which more or less proves your point, Tip - mashed veg is very easy to eat.

Now I've got 350 calories to play with - and the only thing that's stopping me from consuming all of those is that I'm absolutely stuffed. Grin

TalkinPeace · 04/11/2014 20:51

Well I had a massive bowl of "leftovers shakshouka" for supper (ie lots of leftover veg stirred into the fry mix and a dollop of chili)

EXCELLENT THING I DISCOVERED TODAY
Decathlon sell Ski under shirts for £4 : they are comfy, anonymously stylish and SO SO warm : perfect for fast days heading into winter

cleanmachine · 04/11/2014 21:14

Hi everyone is Gray to read everyone's updates. I'm still plodding along and my body had fallen into a routine of losing 1lb every other week. Is Painfully slow but I am loving this way of life. After nearly 10 weeks I ruined my first fast yesterday and that's why I'm having to fast today. I seem to have fallen into a self sabotage frame of mind which is so frustrating as I am 1lb away from falling down into the next stone bracket.

Party of my prob this week seems to be that I have resigned myself to the fact that I won't lose this week as I only lose every other week so I don't have to be so strict. I need to stop thinking this!

Other than this though I have to say I am enjoying the fasting and finally people around me are starting to notice I've lost weight (maybe that's what is triggering my sabotage? ?!) .

TalkinPeace · 04/11/2014 21:19

Hi Cleanmachine
You will lose weight this week. If you make sure you do.

Instead of worrying about the food so much this week, see if you can up the exercise a bit :
even if it means walking indirect routes to places, or running up and down the stairs twice instead of once, or putting the computer on the worktop and doing all your internet surfing standing up

in the third MM programme he looked at calorie burning and the more you stand up the more you burn (because your muscles have to work full time)

If you really want to push the boat out, make a point of not leaning back in any seats for 10 minutes at a time .... fast way to tight core muscles so you will get leaner by default.

TheHoneyBadger · 04/11/2014 21:24

oh it's nice to see old faces Smile breadandwine i MUST stay on the thread this time. the surgery threw me but a year and some is way too long. i'd put back on over a stone of the just over two i lost with this WOE - which to be fair isn't bad for over a year off the wagon!

going to bed without eating. be a nice kick start for my system. fingers crossed i'll manage to sleep easily and that'll be my first fast successfully under my belt.
