Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 47: School’s out for summer! Holidays creating havoc with your fasting? DCs driving you to drink and donuts? Help is at hand right here...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Wow, even with fish fingers and a few oven chips plus steamed veg for dinner I've still come in at 525 odd cals. Not bad at all!!!

Am going to 'close the kitchen' in a minute and have a quiet evening and early to bed!

How's everyone else doing today? I love the Inspirational thread southeast and have been reading bits of it on and off today. Some of the pictures are no longer visible though but the stats alone are pretty impressive!!!

Also found a link (I think from B&W) to the 'fast diet' web forum, not the DrM site, can't link as on phone... Have any if you used it? Seems ok for ideas etc...

annielewis · 05/11/2014 18:53

Cross posted jellypi Well done on 380!!! Impressed! Smile

jellypi3 · 05/11/2014 19:19

Thanks Annie :) Well done to you too getting through today. I also read the inspriations thread, it's amazing what some people have achieved. I just hope to join them in a years time :)

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2014 19:30

Sorry to hear about your bereavement, Annie
Flowers
You've done very well indeed to manage an FD under those circumstances.

Hang on, everyone fasting today, not long to go.
. Just have supper, then close the kitchen and clean your teeth.

fourwoodenchairs · 05/11/2014 20:37

Hi everyone,

I've had gastroenteritis since Sunday so hopefully that's shaved off a few pounds!

NFD today, had about 800cals as stomach is very queasy. FD tomorrow. Going to have some avocado and salmon. Weigh in on Friday.

Hope everyone is ok!

BadPenny · 05/11/2014 21:05

I am brand new to this (day 3 - have done 1 FD, 1 NFD, today was second FD) and have never ever been on diet, but already I have a good feeling about this one.

Went back to work after dc2 and found myself 1.5st overweight - this was 6 months ago and despite starting an exercise routine (running 2-3 times per week) and trying to cut down on snacks and unhealthy eating, I found I had put on another 2 pounds. Very depressing. Up till I had the children I never really put on weight - only 5/6 pounds since I stopped growing at puberty.

The trouble is, all my life I have had such an appetite - I have actually had to be quite disciplined about exercise, and also do my best to avoid snacking and over-eating, but really I feel I have been hungry ALL THE TIME since forever.

I've done fasting before, but with 0 cals. For some reason my first FD with 500 cals has had this weird effect on me, that I am no longer feeling hungry. Well, a bit. But not all the time. It's strange but I like it!

Sorry this is long but I am feeling pretty amazed and had to share... xx

Bimblepops · 05/11/2014 23:08

Sounds brilliant, BadP, well done and welcome to this new WOE!

Breadandwine · 06/11/2014 00:48

Just added another post to the Inspirational thread, from one of the main contributors to The Fast Day forum. She's been going just 12 months, and…well, let her tell the story!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 03:27

Four If you had gastroentreitis, I strongly recommend NO fasting for a week. Some people have found fasting upset their tum again, so best not to risk it.
Just eat as healthily as possible, avoiding anything that might cause a relapse, especially alcohol or junk. Only eat if hungry and don't exceed TDEE - your tum needs a rest.
Unfortunately, lost weight from gastroenteritis is temporary, mostly water, which you need to replenish.

Welcome BadP
Smile
Sounds like you had an excellent start to this WOE. Some of us do find it like a reset button.
If you haven"t already measured your waist and hips, do so: inch loss is even more important than weight loss for health & shape.

fourwoodenchairs · 06/11/2014 07:14

I've still got it :( I thought it would have passed by now to be honest. Has anyone had it before? I'm trying to eat but most things are making me nauseous and to b pe honest I can't keep anything inside me!

vvviola · 06/11/2014 07:23

four when I had it, it took the best part of a week for me to be able to eat again - felt really hungry in between but each time I ate it all started off again.

I would think if you are managing to keep fluids in you, it's possibly just a case of waiting it out and following what your body tells you.

DD2 is still poorly. Has taken nearly 2 hours to get to sleep, and still hasn't properly settled. FD went pretty well, but it is very hard to resist the chocolate biscuits after a day like today, especially as the fireworks and our obnoxious noisy neighbours have just started up again so are likely to keep disturbing her.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 07:40

Four Sorry to hear that.
My GP recommends dry toast or a plain dry roll, no seeds etc. in small amounts. No tea, coffee etc definitely no juice or fruit. Drink lots of water.
He says that is based on research. The idea is so your tum has minimum stress amd no irritants - tums like boredom.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 07:46

Also sorry to hear your DD is still poorly , vvv You are doing very well to manage FDs
it is also important not to dive too deeply into the biscuit tin on NFDs: there are better comfort foods, whose effects last longer and do you more good, e.g. maccaroni cheese with grilled tomatoes < drool >

fourwoodenchairs · 06/11/2014 07:50

Thanks girls, going to stick to water today. I had a mouthful of DS's mash potato last night as I was ravenous - forgot to think it was full of butter and milk which obviously pissed off my stomach last night. I'm desperate to glug some water but that starts it off again too! Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy honestly.

vvv hope your DD gets better soon

TheHoneyBadger · 06/11/2014 07:50

four - make sure you have some electrolytes, mix a few sachets in a bottle of water and keep sipping all the time. best you can do is keep hydrated and electrolytes balanced. i used to find after being ill like that having some plain salty crackers around helped - just sucking on little bites now and then. could just be me though - some swear by dry toast but i could never stomach that.

well after a LOF day and a day of not eating too much (def well within TDEE) my weight hasn't moved Confused however i had a big drop in weight after eating lightly over the weekend (5lbs just dropped off) so i'm trying to think positive and think that the fast has consolidated that loss rather than just swinging back on itms?

i'm going to stay well within tdee today and then fast again tomorrow. hopefully that one will make a difference on the scales.

just occurred to me i should take measurements! might mean i see results even when the scales aren't playing nice.

fourwoodenchairs · 06/11/2014 07:51

Thanks Honey, is Diorylite similar stuff as I have that in the house? Don't want to go out and risk spreading the plague!!

TheHoneyBadger · 06/11/2014 07:57

yeah that's the stuff four!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 08:04

Honey Yes, do measure, so you can monitor inches loss. That and clothes fit is a better indicator of fat loss than the scales.

Most people lose in dribs and drabs, so not every week and certainly not every FD. The overall trend ovr several weeks is 1lb weekly, but would be a lot slower for those trimming down an already healthy weight and tum.

Best to weigh every 2 or 4 weeks, if you get stressed or discouraged by scales.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/11/2014 09:04

is are

TheHoneyBadger · 06/11/2014 10:00

tmi alert but just realised the time of the month and that that will be why i don't appear to have lost anything from the fast - always that way for me just before. the weight drops after usually. that has cheered me up Smile

vvviola · 06/11/2014 10:18

Kitchen closed on a successful FD. Resisted the lure of the biscuit tin and had a few crackers and a big mug of black tea.

Tummy is grumbling a bit now so I'm off to bed. Porridge with blueberries for breakfast tomorrow, I think :)

InfinitySeven · 06/11/2014 11:46

Morning everyone.

On a FD. I'm cold, so I'm hungry. I need to get on with stuff, and it'll distract me, but I'm just sitting here in a blanket thinking how cold I am.

There's one of those extreme weight loss programmes on. She's 18, and 17 stone. She's got 65 days, and they want to trim 66 lbs off. She's literally spending 6 - 6 in the gym every day, burning 7000 calories. I feel for her...the trainer is lovely and trying to motivate her, but her parents aren't supporting her at all. They left a takeaway pizza in her room for her! A huge, lovely smelling pizza...that'd break me, I think. She looks broken. Makes FDs look better...

BauerTime · 06/11/2014 11:46

four ive had gastro a couple of times and its just awful isn't it. If you are still suffering from D&V after 5 days then id give the doctor a ring tbh. Both times ive had it ive ended up in hospital on IV fluids.

Dioralyte is what you need or lucozade/lemonade and salty crisps seem to do the trick too.

fourwoodenchairs · 06/11/2014 11:50

Cripes time that's awful. You must have been so ill. I'm assuming the cramps are normal? They are vicious. As soon as a wave of cramp comes then I get diarrhoea :(
