Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 47: School’s out for summer! Holidays creating havoc with your fasting? DCs driving you to drink and donuts? Help is at hand right here...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Hi there, I am new to this WOE and have only done 3 FD's so far but have lost 4.5lbs which I am quite frankly gobsmacked at. I have to say I was sceptical but so many of you seem to be having success I thought I'd give it a try and am pleased so far. I know the rate of loss will slow down now but I feel very motivated so really hope this can work for me long term.
Some stats: 5'6", was 11st aftee having my baby but would like to be 10st at the most (to get under 10 would be amazing but I haven't been there for about 15years!)
Currently 10st 9.5 and already my jeans feel more loose.
So, not loads to lose but really keen to lose it! Loads of inspiration on here, great thread. Will be popping back for more, starting to wonder if going under the magic 10st is actually feasible. .......!

BigChocFrenzy · 27/08/2014 12:08

Welcome, Bambamb Well done on losing lb and inches
Smile
It depends on your frame size, metabolism, food preferences, lifestyle etc what you can achieve with reasonable effort.

As you haven't that much to lose, you probably don't overeat very much anyway. So, no massive change of habits needed on NFDs.
Some folk on 5:2 have been astonished to find they can achieve a much lower weight and waist than they thought.

I recommend aiming for a waist target of say half your height, because abdominal fat is more important than weight for both health and shape.

MariaRossa · 27/08/2014 14:12

Today is my second anniversary of 5:2, having done my first fast on 27 Aug 2012. You’d think, then, I’d have some insightful things to say to mark this momentous occasion, but no – just to say to anyone in the early stages that this is really sustainable if it suits you. I find it relatively easy to stick to so I have never missed or failed to finish a fast day, so , you know – yay me Smile but the fact that 2 years on, I could still do with losing a bit more would indicate that I still overeat on NFDs. I’ve gone down from a size 20 to a 12 over this time, without ever feeling terribly deprived. I realise that this just puts me now at the place lots of you are starting (which is quite depressing in a lot of ways, but I never thought that would be within my reach!) I’ve done this with my “never weigh, never measure” bury-your-head-in-the-sand technique, so for anyone who is struggling with the weighing in thing (and indeed calorie counting – I never do that on NFDs, and hardly at all on FDs now) you really don’t have to do it that way. Sure, I suppose I could have lost more by counting and buying some scales, but if I can at the very least maintain the weight I am now and get to eat as much as I do now, I can live with that , and I still hope to be losing a bit more, if slowly. Stick with it, folks – this really works. As ever, these threads in all their versions, remain invaluable for info and support - thanks again to all who post.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/08/2014 14:28

Happy 2nd Aniversary, Maria
Flowers
Well done on achieving a sustainable WOE that you enjoy.

Bambamb · 27/08/2014 20:18

Wow Maria that's quite a loss! I'd love to be a size 12, that's what I'm aiming for (14 at the moment).
I'm a very average build, not petite but not particularly solid either. I think I carry extra weight quite well in that I don't look particularly heavy at 11st (the beginning of 'overweight' bmi wise). I'm lucky in that my body seems to put the extra in places that make me look curvier rather than tubby......but that means I find it hard to motivate myself to lose it. I want to for health reasons and to get back into my skinny jeans! Will get the measuring tape out, thanks hadn't thought to do that.

Bambamb · 27/08/2014 20:21

Oh and so far I have found the fast days a doddle which has also surprised me. I thought I'd feel ropey but I've just drunk gallons of green tea and felt fine. Been eating at about 5 - 6 pm ish only, about 475 cals. Not counting on my normal days at the moment, hoping I wont need to, trying to be mindful instead.
Fast day number 4 tomorrow, wish me luck!

ErrolTheDragon · 27/08/2014 20:32

Maria - that's great - you've really made it a sustainable WOE not a 'diet'. Smile

As to the buffalo and bison - to which of course my immediate response was the same as Alpaca's DS - turns out they're not closely related, what the Americans call 'buffaloes' are actually bison bison, buffaloes are African and Asian beasts. Anyway, my googling assistance has apparently earned me a reward from a renowned Berlin chocolate shop - they're getting back tomorrow but that will be an FD so I intend to hide the chocs!

Southeastdweller · 27/08/2014 22:08

Very well done Maria on your significant achievement. Can we expect your story on the Inspirational thread? Flowers

Welcome back mttum. I'm another one who'd love to hear more about what you've been up to this year.

God luck tomorrow Bam.

DramaAlpaca · 27/08/2014 22:32

Wow, Maria what an inspiration you are! What an achievement.

Good luck tomorrow, Bam. I'll be joining you after my disaster on Tuesday.

bellasuewow · 27/08/2014 22:37

Hello 5"6 here. 14 st and tried them all ( ww, sw, ll) with some success but when life stress kicks in I always end up ballooning again. Started this week and feel fine and optimistic especially from reading other threads. My goal is to weigh once a month and lose 4 st this year with this woe. I want to wear my wedding and engagement rings again without letting them out again plus cross my legs really comfortably, get my confidence and sexual confidence back DH would never admit to it but I know he fancies me way more when I am thinner and he knows I am unhappy. I want more energy as well as I am turning into a couch spud. I also have a ton of lovely clothes in the loft all size 10/12 plus I used to turn heads and that was quite nice. I love the way my hands look thinner with rings on and my nails done sounds silly I know but it is the little things for me. I also want to rediscover my love of exercise as I think a catch 22 happens when you put weight on and you end up feeling down and sluggish and then stay on the sofa hence get bigger because it is that much harder to get off it. Wishing everyone the best of luck with this I am determined not to throw in the towel when work and life get tough and stressful.

bellasuewow · 27/08/2014 22:40

Bambamb well done you are the same height as me and you must look amazing. Maria thanks for that inspirational I will remember your post.

Bimblepops · 27/08/2014 22:41

Wow, Maria, that's great, really inspirational. I have I say that I'm really enjoying this WOE, although have only been doing it properly since April.

Only managed 2/3 of the Shred today, lower back is seriously stiff and painful, will try to get it sorted tomorrow.

Off out tomorrow eve, aiming for next FD on Friday.

Bimblepops · 27/08/2014 22:45

None of what you've said sounds silly, Bella. Wishing you every success with this WOE - you can do it!

BigChocFrenzy · 28/08/2014 01:14

Welcome, Bella
Many folk on these threads have lost and maintained several dress sizes.
Some have also achieved sport and fitness levels they never imagined.
Smile
Excellent idea to weigh monthly.
Have you taken your measurements ? Your shape may change more quickly than the scales, so your clothes start to feel looser.

Breadandwine · 28/08/2014 02:14

I wish I'd taken measurements before I started exercising! Smile

But, then, I never thought I'd actually add muscle when I began.

Some have also achieved sport and fitness levels they never imagined.

That's me! Grin

How're you doing, SED? Hope you're firmly in the zone again.

Nice to see new people on the board - you've certainly come to the right place!

It's my two and a half year anniversary today - I began on 28th Feb 2012. For new readers I lost 24lbs (and gained 4 belt holes) by November 2012 and I've successfully maintained my new weight since then (on 6:1).

I love this WOL, and it's my intention to have a weekly fast until the day I pop my clogs! Grin

Bambamb · 28/08/2014 09:34

Thanks Bella!! Welcome and good luck!
Really great to hear the long term maintenance stories too - this aspect really is key and is very encouraging.
Re: skinny jeans. I tried them on this morning and I can get them on......but my bum & thighs just lookhuge in them. I'm not convinced I'm the right shape to pull them off, even if I lost lots more weight. Do you need to be a certain body shape do you think? I would love to be a skinny jean wearer but maybe I should accept they're just not for me!

BigChocFrenzy · 28/08/2014 09:39

Happy 2½ B&W
Smile
How fit are you all ?
Try this FitnessQuiz

BigChocFrenzy · 28/08/2014 09:50

Bam To look good in skinny jeans, it is essential to have very little excess fat anywhere specially waist & hips.
Try this BodyFatCalculator
Just being within normal BMI is not enough, because you may still have quite a bit of body fat.
Ntbo, tall folk tend to look better than shorties in them.

MariaRossa · 28/08/2014 14:00

Thanks, all, for your kind words Flowers

SED I don't feel like I've arrived anywhere in particular yet (just a date), so maybe not ready for the Inspirational thread yet!

Bellasue - welcome, and I'm with you on the hand thing. I've been fascinated to see the changes in my hands, as bones, sinews and veins have appeared. Apparently hands aren't round blobs at the end of your arms after all - who knew?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/08/2014 14:48

Welcome Bella - this really is a good WOE especially if you combine it with regular exercise - what sort of thing are you thinking of doing? (BC always has brilliant advice over on the 5:2 exercise threads.)

As to skinny jeans - as a 5'1" pear shape, even though I've lost weight inc of thighs, I don't think they'll ever be for me - but I'm really pleased with some narrowish straight-legged jeans I got before going on holiday. Great to have a change from bootcuts at last!

Thursday FD - DD and DH back from Berlin, I had to sample one of the aforementioned chocolates because they wanted one each too - but just the one and I've put them away out of temptations way (with a dog and my DH they need to be hidden anyway.

MazzleDazzle · 28/08/2014 21:17

Aaaargh! What has happened to mumsnet? Everything looks strange! Almost impossible to read on my phone now. I hate change!

MazzleDazzle · 28/08/2014 21:28

Welcome Bella! Last Nov. I was exactly where you are now, only a little taller and a little heavier. I am now a size 12 and in a little over a week I'm running a 10K obstacle course. Ease yourself in gently if need be and keep an eye on your calories on NFD and you'll be stones lighter before you know it!

I am back on MFP to get a handle on my nibbling! I've slipped back into naughty habits (biscuits, eating when standing, picking, eating from morning until night), though still loads better than I used to be.

Haven't been able to catch up on the thread with this new screen format. Every time I scroll adverts pop up along the top and bottom Angry and when I delete them a new one pops up in its place!

TalkinPeace · 28/08/2014 21:28

mazzle Its OK on a desktop Grin
bella skinny jeans are down to skeleton as much as anything else - I have thin legs but no waist ..... I had thin legs even when I was fat .... aiming for lean is better than aiming for thin

DramaAlpaca · 28/08/2014 21:39

A proper FD done at last. Back on track now Smile

bellasuewow · 28/08/2014 22:23

Many thanks friendly thin people, skinny jeans Jesus god forbid. Ironically when I was a size 10/12 in the late medaeival period did I appreciate it..did I heck thought I was fat. MAZZLE that is so encouraging to be a 12 after a year thanks.
