Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 47: School’s out for summer! Holidays creating havoc with your fasting? DCs driving you to drink and donuts? Help is at hand right here...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Hello everyone! I haven't been here for quite a while, although I have been keeping the faith (more or less) with 5:2. Will you have me back??

MazzleDazzle · 23/08/2014 08:25

Of course mttum! Always glad to see one of ours return to the fold.

As suspected my totm scupper end my post-fast weigh in today. The scales were not kind. BUT I've shifted almost 7lb of my holiday gain in only a week. My guess is it'll take another fortnight to lose the rest.

The end of Nov. is my one year anniversary of starting this health kick. I'd really like to be 3 stone lighter by then! Before my holiday I was only 3lb away!

BC I've been working out my upper body and also putting in some squats and leg swings/raises which don't bother my ankle. Haven't been able to work out fully since it happened. The race is 2 weeks today. I signed up in Jan and I've paid my fee and hotel. I'm doing it as part of a team too. I've also been wearing super sensible footwear. I'm praying that it's better in time!

BigChocFrenzy · 23/08/2014 09:15

Welcome back, mtum Tell us what you've been up to
Smile
That 7lb in a week is wonderful, Mazzle but you're right about the 2nd half. You probably need to be extra strict with food if your exercise is restricted.
Maybe eat hardcore healthy and also cut out alcohol until after The Beast, whatever happens about that.

Bimblepops · 23/08/2014 22:12

Quickly popping in to say "hello".

Just back from a lovely week in the Scillies - absolutely stunningly beautiful place. Now to get back onto the 5:2 wagon and I actually can't wait - stomach feels sluggish and achey, need a good strict regime to get everything shipshape again! Not to mention needed to get rid of the holiday lbs (haven't weighed yet, not sure I can bear to).

Will catch up on the thread tomorrow. Hope everyone is happy and well. FD tomorrow for me.

Bimblepops · 24/08/2014 20:59

FD done and kitchen closed.

Feels good to be back fasting. Have MFP'ed at 527, but snuck a couple of plums and raspberries at the allotments, so probably a little higher.

Have been doing lots of walking over the past week, but no Shred, had planned to start again this evening, but am rather whacked, so considering wimping out and doing it tomorrow morning...

Hope I haven't killed the thread!?!

vvviola · 24/08/2014 22:09

No FD for me today - at home with sick DD2. Can't believe I've had to call in to work again about not being able to come in Sad

Hoping she'll be well enough tomorrow (high temps and ear infection) that I can go to work and do a FD.

Bimblepops · 24/08/2014 22:45

Hope she gets better quickly, vvv

BigChocFrenzy · 24/08/2014 23:07

I hope your poor DD is well enough for school tomorrow, vvv
Also worrying for you that you had to stay off work today - is your employer understanding ?
I suppose you have to take it out of your vacation days, which would be a double pain.

Even if she does stay at home another day, you can still eat your FD menu, because she should be in bed.

Well done on your post-hols FD, Bimble You'll soon get rid of those extra lb.
Now, tomorrow report back and tell us you've started the Shred
Smile

vvviola · 24/08/2014 23:25

I've learnt I'm not good at FDs if I'm stuck at home BigChoc, if I try one I always go a bit off the rails and then end up binging. Not good. I've found that if I just plan to stick to TDEE on an at home day I eat much better than if I'd had a failed FD.

She's only just 3, so keeping her in bed is pretty much impossible. Grin Also, kind of frustratingly, the nurofen is working, so she's in great form, wants to play, wants to go out. Of course, when it wears of in an hour or so, she'll be miserable again - so she's really not well enough to be anywhere but home.

Work are saying that they are understanding, but I feel bad considering the time off I had for being sick myself. Although it is the one advantage of a part time admin job compared to what I'm qualified/trained to do... especially at this time of year, when things are quiet, a day here and there doesn't cause things to fall apart. Smile

"Trust your knicker elastic rather than your scales!"Flavia Bertolini, deputy editor of Notebook - the Sunday Mirror magazine.

Excellent article, which I've tried and failed to find online. Maybe someone else will have better luck?

BigChocFrenzy · 25/08/2014 01:01

Great slogan, B&W but I can't find it online.

DramaAlpaca · 25/08/2014 10:07

"Trust your knicker elastic rather than your scales!"

Ha, this is very apt for me, considering I haven't stepped on the scales in several weeks but have just had to treat myself to a new pack of knickers in a smaller size Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 25/08/2014 10:23

Morning all - back on the 5:2 wagon after hols and then I didn't feel like starting it last week (got back 2am tues morning, catch up with work and washing and then up 3am Fri to drive DH and DD to the airport... I suppose I could have done Wed but was still feeling knackered.)
Anyway, had a nice sail on Saturday and a decent (though flat) dog-walk yesterday, and have just done L1 shred - easing back into exercise.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/08/2014 11:53

Excellent knickers NSV, Drama
Grin
Welcome back, Errol

Bimblepops · 25/08/2014 22:47

Hi BigChoc!

I've restarted the Shred. Did it this evening after the kids were in bed - it was horrid but felt very satisfying to get it done. Also did 30 mins of gentle jogging, as it's been a seriously sedentary day due to the continuous rain.

FD for me tomorrow and got my meals all planned.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/08/2014 23:30

Well done on your good return to exercise, Bimble and your FD planning
Rain can make fasting / training tougher psychologically, even if you stay indoors.

I often treat myself by buying a new Kindle book, to chill after training.
< Kindle saved me from having to move to a house with a library room for all my 1000s of books >

wildwater · 26/08/2014 08:29

Hi to everybody & anybody who may remember me from a while back! I am back in NZ, a couple of kilos heavier after an incredibly topsy-turvy time but still focussed on my health, walking everywhere, and edging back into serious 5:2, or possibly ADF for a while. Will start checking back in here, and talk a bit more about what's been going on. Smile

The 5:2 Thread number 47: School’s out for summer! Holidays creating havoc with your fasting? DCs driving you to drink and donuts? Help is at hand right here...
BetsyBell · 26/08/2014 09:02

Hello WW - hope you're ok? Nice to hear from you again :)

I'm on holiday, eating more than usual but enjoying it rather than getting too full. DH and I are currently non-drinking so enjoying consuming those calories as cheese and cream teas instead! I'm in the lake district, where I've been many many times, and I'm really noticing a huge difference in my fitness levels - barely breaking a sweat going up up up the fells. I'm loving how awesome life is when you look after yourself. Laying off all alcohol completely is a bit of a revelation too. I prefer how my body works when I don't attack it with booze so I think I'm done with it.

Even a 6.5km hilly run yesterday didn't floor me. I should have gone further!

OP posts:
TalkinPeace · 26/08/2014 12:20

WOW
you can tell the summer hols are nearly over - we are all crawling back to the land of fasting
Waves to mttum and does and upside down wave to wildwater
Am fasting today : its hard after nearly three weeks off, but I feel so flabby it just has to be!

And yes betsybell DH and I are coming to the realisation that a period of sobriety might do us good.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/08/2014 12:47

Yesterday's FD went OK - needed my miso a bit earlier than usual but apart from that back into the groove. Starting Shred again I'm glad to say hasn't resulted in me walking bowlegged and struggling down the stairs like it did the first time - though my triceps are a bit sore which I wasn't expecting. Think most of what I was doing while away must have been biceps and abs.

Think I shall dislodge the dog from his office basket and take him somewhere for a walk. Nice and quiet with DD and DH away, though they phone periodically to ask me to google things (for some reason they can't get 3G in Germany or find wifi) - this morning from Berlin zoo, the question was - seriously! - 'whats the difference between a buffalo and a bison' Grin.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/08/2014 16:42

Welcome back Wildwater

Betsy You are enjoying the benefits of all your hard work exercising.
I've always been nearly teetotal - I enjoy a glass of something sweet & alcoholic every few months, but have no desire for a 2nd glass.
Moderation in ice cream is another matter !

ErrolTheDragon · 26/08/2014 18:23

Betsey ITA - it's lovely striding up a hill and only stopping when you really want to look at the view! Grin

Bimblepops · 26/08/2014 20:34

Errol - what is the difference??? And hello WW.

FD done, couldn't finish all my dinner, so under 500 cals for the day. Feeling extra pleased with myself as didn't have dinner last night, which meant I did 21hrs between meals.

Stinking headache now though, which I've had for a couple of hours. Have had around 3l water and a soy sauce laden dinner, so thinking this probably isn't fasting related. Not sure whether to Shred when I get home in 30 mins, or just go straight to bed.

Have childcare for the next two days, so will be able to get my exercise done at a reasonable time, rather than last thing at night which will be really nice.

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2014 21:57

Well, my FD didn't go to plan, thanks to a colleague's birthday at work today. A chocolate cake appeared, and refusal would've been seen as quite rude. It wasn't even nice chocolate cake Sad, and I developed a headache afterwards, which I don't think is a coincidence because I haven't eaten anything as rich as that for a long time.

I've given up on the FD and will do it tomorrow instead.

Bimblepops - what's the difference between a buffalo & a bison? According to DS3 you can't wash your hands in a buffalo Grin

vvviola · 26/08/2014 22:06

Hello WW nice to have another Kiwi on board (I'm not really a kiwi, just a blow-in, but I've started saying "awesome" and "jandals" Grin)

No FD for me this week thanks to being home with sick DD2 (out of hours doc misdiagnosed her - she has a nasty middle ear infection, so the drops would have been doing no good. GP was very unimpressed when we saw him yesterday)

Will be trying a mini fast tomorrow, as we're driving to MIL in the afternoon, so I should be able to fast until dinner at her house.
