The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

hellie

I managed to lose 1.5kg between 10am and 11:30 a few weeks ago with nothing more than a trip to the loo and a glass of water - that's 3.3lb. How is that even possible without causing serious damage to the toilet??!!

I'm seriously considering giving up the scales after that, it's ridiculous!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 25/04/2014 12:01

justice you need to drink a lot of water on a FD to replace the water you normally take in via food. I take a jug of water into the living room with me in the evening and just keep refilling my glass.
What would be wrong with going for a bacon sarnie? It is a NFD for you, so eat! :)

Mazzle sympathies, I am in similar place. Broken sleep is the pits, and the bodies natural instinct is to want food to replace the lost sleep.

rallytog1 · 25/04/2014 12:22

plecof I'm feeling similar to you. Had my first ever FD yesterday and it wasn't too bad, but I'm feeling distinctly weird today! Am just trying to stay hydrated but have had a piece of cake, which has helped Blush I guess it must be normal to feel like this to begin with - fingers crossed it will get better.

Thanks for all the support and encouragement everyone - it's great to hear all the successes people are having and a will be good motivation for the more difficult days.

Southeastdweller · 25/04/2014 12:22

Hellie I know this is personal but have you been...regular this week? Because some of us found, especially on, that constipation can occur and affect weigh-in readings. Veg, water and strong coffee are good to get things moving!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/04/2014 12:37

rally, plec etc - hopefully you will find it gets better. I now find that I feel positively good the morning after an FD - eg today I've exercised, actually done a boring job that I've been avoiding, and not eaten, just had tea, coffee and water - tummy rumbling a bit now so I'll go and get some lunch in a moment.

Oddly enough, I tend to feel worst on the FD morning... even though I'm rarely eating brekkie anyway nowadays. The only difference is lack of tea.... maybe I need to allow more FD calories for milk and have some, huh? Grin

EvilHerbivore · 25/04/2014 12:39

Mazzle I posted at the end of the last thread that I'm also struggling, looks like there's a few of us?
Want to try and kick each other up the arse?! Are you on a FD today?

MazzleDazzle · 25/04/2014 13:11

Thank you for the advice and support folks.

I think it's best if I forget fasting for now and take each day at a time, trying to eat healthily.

I've drank 3 glasses of water and a Berocca. Feeloew energized already. Haven't any junk left on the house as I are it all Blush. Stocked up on loads of fruit and pre-prepared veg/salad/soup mix, which I never usually buy, but I figured would be an easy healthy option. Got some soup on the hob now.

I was eating lots of eggs (we have chickens), but need to get back into that habit and STEP AWAY FROM THE BREAD!

plecof I have those ingredients and they would be perfect to have on standby when the sugar craving kicks in.

Thank you Evil and Almost, yes let's turn this thing around together. Kicking of the arses all round!

veryseriousgirl · 25/04/2014 13:46

mazzle well done - day at a time definitely my strategy - I'm new to the fasting WOL, so it's a lot easier to wrap my head around!

Celebrated successful fast yesterday with a one-off almond croissant for breakfast. A bit naughty, but DH has taken the day off work today and we had a luxurious couple of child-free hours while DC were in nursery. Had veg- and protein-filled salad for lunch, though, so back on track for healthy NFD eating.

TulipOHare · 25/04/2014 16:56

Place-marking.

I feel a bit shit today after a FD yesterday Hmm bit headachey and blah. No appetite but have had two eggs and some nuts, plus water. Maybe just coming down with something eh Grin oh well, onward and upward, sure I will feel better once school starts up again and things get back to normal.

CiderwithBuda · 25/04/2014 17:06

Hi all

Overtired - great result. And someone else lost a stone too - well done!

Mazzle - sometimes it is just bloody hard. Sleep deprivation is a nightmare. Very hard to concentrate on fasting when you are so tired.

Blondieminx - I had one session and haven't done anything since! Have another session booked for Tuesday. I need to actually do the exercises!

Panacotta - I'm on day 5. Doing 10 days - I'm going to New York on Thursday so 10 days takes me up to then. A friend did it and lost 6 pounds - and she is skinny anyway! She didn't do it to lose weight though. I'm fed up being good in the week and losing and then regaining it all over the weekend. Last week I lost 5 lbs but then regained 2.5 over the weekend! So this weekend I am not doing that!

BigChoc - I find it ok. Surprisingly. Avoiding the wine is the hardest bit. Actually avoiding it is ok it's resisting it that is the problem!

Bimblepops · 25/04/2014 17:11

Another one struggling with tiredness today! Darling children!

Compensated by treating myself (and the non-sleeping child) to dim sum lunch. Probably ate less than I usually would have, but have been feeling overstuffed and rather guilty ever since. Bit pissed off about it all actually.

I had intended to do a Jillian Michaels session once the kids were in bed, but I think I'm going to have a beer instead and do a longer session tomorrow morning. Can't currently imagine feeling capable of eating anything for dinner this evening.

dinkystinkygettingdinkier · 25/04/2014 17:12

Hello all - cant believe the new thread is so full already! FD today - AND its DS1's 8th birthday. Had today off and went for a massage this morning - made me v thirsty and put me off wanting to eat - then a buggy workout this afternoon with ds3. Have made it so far with a mug of soup (95 cals) and hope to resist the call of the chocolate cake till tomorrow. Will be back later to read the full thread.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/04/2014 17:33

I fasted since yesterday 5pm yesterday, so I could enjoy supper at my favourite restaurant today.
I've just ordered (a LOT !) and I'm sitting here in happy anticipation.
Ah, this is how I like to start my weekend
Smile
After this, I'll do a buffered fast until Sunday 2pm. The next week will have soical events with loads of food every day, so I must do my FDs in advance.

MetellaEstMater · 25/04/2014 17:35

The lack of sleep is a real killer. We are having fun with the four month sleep regression and DD2 at the moment. Despite eating okay, proper fasts and a decent amount of HIIT and Bikram, I put on .5kg this week, my first gain on this WOL. I'm sure it's to do with so little sleep!

MetellaEstMater · 25/04/2014 17:49

Just saw this on the fast diet twitter feed and thought I'd share...

The 5:2 Thread number 43: Had too much Easter chocolate? Is the sugar monster chasing you? Come and join us in kicking the carb-cravings and getting back to healthy eating habits with intermittent fas
TalkinPeace · 25/04/2014 17:54

Hrruummpph.
I knew I'd put on weight and gone flabby on holiday, but the scales at the gym very nastily told me that I'd put on 5lb in three weeks.
It might also have something to do with the wine and cheese fest on Wednesday
It means I have to be strict with myself for at least a month - and its a month when I'll hardly get to the gym at all.

Welcome new fasters - consider me a member of the weight loss gang for the next few weeks!

BigChocFrenzy · 25/04/2014 18:29

Tip We're temporary twins.
I'm fasting most of the weekend, to avoid this next madly social week worsening the damage.
It goes on easily, but takes a long time to lose at our advanced ages.
Hmm
Very sensible to hide the scales for several weeks, Chica

A stone in 6 weeks. Great loss, Notastired, especially with Easter

And you're another stoner, Oxtail ! Some people find they can lose quickly at first even over-eating on NFDs. However, once down to the final stone or so, most folk have to check they average TDEE on NFDs, to achieve the weekly calorie deficit.

Southeastdweller · 25/04/2014 18:35

Trying to eat healthily on NFD's when you're sleep-deprived is bad enough but when you're fasting it's like walking through quicksand! I've found that powering through if possible on caffeine helps as well as having a home full of low cal and nutritious food - it's worth it to get that FD under your belt and the calorie deficit. But alternatively I don't blame anyone for postponing the fast.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/04/2014 18:40

Hellie Anyone else who has eaten a lot of carbs over Easter:

. Carbs cause you to gain water weight. Each carb molecule combines with 3 water molecules to form glycogen, mostly stored in the liver and muscles.

. The body's glycogen tank can only store about enough for 48 hrs, so any additional carbs are converted and stored as fat.

. Sweet junk with added sugar is NOT handled well by our bodies. The insulin metabolism / endocrine system doesn't work as well and many people store a lot of this extra fat in the belly region.

MazzleDazzle · 25/04/2014 18:54

Tulip lots of others feel a bit yuk after a FD, not sure why. Hopefully it's e a one off and will improve.

A successful FD is indeed something to celebrate veryserious and one wee Danish won't hurt.

I'm pleased with my eating today, well since the SOS post on here anyway. Had a nutritious lunch - spiced butternut squash soup, salad with a small amount of dressing and sushi. Went to a friend's for coffee and managed to stay away from her biscuit tin. Was seriously tempted though!
Baked potatoes are in the oven for dinner. Will probably have them with broccoli, leeks and cheese sauce.

I made those energy balls plecof and they are fab! Perfect for when I need a sweet boost. Even DH likes them. If I feel my resolve weakening I will reach for them and not nip to the shop for junk.

The first thing I eat tomorrow will be eggs. These last few mornings I've eaten rubbish as soon as I've woken up. Up until a few weeks ago I was skipping breakfast and eating a protein based lunch. Hopefully because I haven't eaten crap today since the huge bowl of Rice Krispies and 2 maple pancakes for breakfast, then when I wake up tomorrow I won't feel so sluggish.

And where has Zed disappeared to?

Labracadabra · 25/04/2014 19:25

Hi Lidl, I'm EBF a 5 month old and also have plenty of milk and a big, well fed baby! I've been 5:2 (and occasionally 4:3) since she was about 8 weeks old. I've lost over 1 and a half stone and stick to 500-600 on FDs too. I had an indulgent Easter as Easter Monday was also my birthday so lots of cake, choc and wine consumed! Trying to undo the damage over this week and next but have loads of social eating events so I will end up doing back to back FDs today and tomorrow, mini fast on Sunday then FD Monday. I'm sure I can do it though as I actually find NFDs harder than FDsConfused

plecofjustice · 25/04/2014 19:38

Awesome mazzle I've got really into healthier substitutes since I started 5:2 (I've been going for almost 20 months now) I feel a lot better, even though I've not really been losing weight as such - plateaud at 7Kg lost for about 8 months now. My shape's changed a bit though.

TheOrchardKeeper · 25/04/2014 20:11

Think I found a place between a bit empty and totally stuffed. I like it here Grin

Thought my first FD yesterday would mean I was starving today but if anything it's the other way around. I'm sure it'll be harder when the initial excitement wears off but wish I'd started ages ago, seeing as it's so much easier than I expected (even if it is still mildy challenging).

Well done to everyone else so far Thanks

Layl77 · 25/04/2014 20:31

First day done! Didn't at until lunch then made a BIG tub of salad which I've snacked on (and marshmallows Blush and had small dinner. Under 1000 for the day and I'm good at not picking of an evening as I'm stuck feeding a greedy piglet proud of myself, now praying I see the last stone shifting slowly!
Well done everyone and thanks for the link to the stories - really spurred me on. It's actually a nice feeling to have hunger pangs knowing they're working.

Anonynony · 25/04/2014 20:34

Oh guyyys my fast day ended abruptly this morning and I have eaten an obscene amount of calories today Blush for the first morning in donkeys years I had no coffee in and I really think that played a part!

I'm out tomorrow night but will be very busy all day so will hopefully balance out, will do consecutive fasts on Sunday and Monday fingers crossed or else Sunday, Wednesday and Friday!
