The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Self-sufficient in the morning? Wow Betsy. My DC always wake us up first, but then are happy to go downstairs on their own. Then 30 mins later they're back upstairs demanding warm milk!

I love your tattoo eat. It's fun! I've lost count of how many tattoos I have. They are all fairly well hidden so unless I'm naked, no one would ever know they're there. I have a pretty serious job, so it has to be that way. Do you know the poem 'Warning' with the first line 'When I am an old lady I shall wear purple'. Well, when I am an old lady I shall get any tattoo I like!

I started the day with 2 pints of water and a black coffee. I won't eat until mid-day and depending on how I feel, today may be a FD.

Other than my youngest waking early, my DC slept all night. Hurrah!

Southeastdweller · 26/04/2014 09:39

errol Waitrose sell small bars of Montezuma chilli chocolate and I think big branches of Sainsbury's also.

Cute tattoo eat!

BetsyBell · 26/04/2014 10:09

They are nearly 10 and 8 mazzle! They've been self sufficient for a while but have recently stopped arguing loudly in the mornings Grin

Just made a delicious hangover cure power breakfast - Toast with almond butter, banana and a drizzle of honey. Yum yum. Good job I made 2 slices as DS2 snarfed half a slice.

MazzleDazzle · 26/04/2014 10:44

So many folks on this thread rave about almond butter. I've never tried it, but it sounds yum!

My wardrobe is almost empty! I have just sorted through my clothes and have 2 huge piles that are now too big, or just too frumpy. Very satisfying and a reminder why I need to stick at it - if I ever put on weight I'll literally have nothing to wear!

I only have one pair of jeans to my name now, the 12s that I can only just fasten. Can't actually move once I'm in them, so not for wearing just yet.

It's an awful day here, so heading to a soft play. I'll take my book - here's hoping!

Southeastdweller · 26/04/2014 11:01

Where are you Darkhorse? Hopefully you'll emerge from your pile of ironing tonight and find us. I just realised I hadn't replied to your questions in the last thread. Yes I maintain by doing a normal fast along with a mini-fast a few days later. I eat almost everything I want to but in an ideal world I'd like to eat a bit more chocolate, bread and drink more wine than what I do now...you can't have everything, can you? The Tottenham cakes unique to the south east are a bit dull as they're just sponge with a garish bit of pink icing on top but I like one now and then. The cake scene here in London is nowhere near as interesting as it is up in the north west.

almostthereagain · 26/04/2014 11:17

Well done on getting back on the wagon mazzle It's strange how we know what we need to do & once we've said it out loud we have to do it! Good on you, keep it up you're inspiring me. I have done less well, lots of fizz & tapas last night. Slept terribly & feeling fuzzy headed this am (sympathies betsy) Have had coffee & yoghurt with walnuts & dried fruit & been out gardening. Nothing til supper now, off to take dd riding, must get back to proper fasting grr.

Not2bObvious · 26/04/2014 11:57

Ta for the new thread Betsy - haven't had a chance to read through it yet as too busy losing the plotBlush Been v badly behaved the last couple if days, I'll get back on track, just a touch of self sabotage in the airSad Cross and tired with my bad self. Any who, gotta go and start mums taxi business, dh called into work so all collects/drops are on me for the next few hours - hope you're all having a nice saturday

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/04/2014 12:13

Happy weekend everyone :)

Almond butter does sound nice, does one make it or buy it from somewhere?

Montezuma's chocolate is sublime. We live quite locally to where they are based so there is a lot of it around in cafes/national trust places etc. DH and I had a couple of boxes of their mini-Easter eggs from my Mum. Dark chocolate with almond, and milk chocolate with peanut butter. Yum, yum, yum.
Their chilli chocolate is the nicest I think, Lindt comes a close second. They also do giant dark (or milk) chocolate buttons which are just heavenly.

Mazzle well done on the wardrobe sorting. Big achievement!

Yesterday was a NFD and I came in at TDEE. We had Thai green curry and jasmine rice, followed by one scoop of amazing vanilla ice cream for pudding. Also wine - and I managed not to over indulge with any of it. TOTM here which explains chocolate fail on Thursday's FD - feeling much better today.
Breakfast this morning was grapefruit, followed by scotch pancakes with full-fat greek yoghurt and strawberries. Had a third less than I usually do when it is that breakfast.

Breadandwine · 26/04/2014 12:20

I'm B12 and iron low

Eat 1 heaped teaspoon of B12 supplemented nutritional yeast (2.5g, approx) will give you your RDA of B12. I sprinkle it on my pasta as I used to sprinkle parmesan, it's very tasty.

Writingitdown - I didn't make myself clear about the nooch - I meant eating a spoonful dry. I did try it in a drink - a couple of dessertspoons would make a mugful with hot water and it's not bad.

About iron intake - I've always been on the low side, but since acquiring a cast iron fryingpan - my favourite kitchen utensil! - and having Vit C with my meals, my iron has improved a lot.

Eatriskier · 26/04/2014 12:33

Sadly b&w I'm unable to absorb B12 like normal people and just have to wait until my next jab is due Sad. Thankfully I can absorb iron normally, so maybe I'll just have to have some steak and leafy greens Grin

BetsyBell · 26/04/2014 12:35

Well, who knew getting out to the park and running with a bunch of people woud be such a great way to shift the hangover fuzzies! I'm very tired but feel great, and running was fine, easier than it sometimes is in fact.

Alibaba

I'm still trying to figure out if it's cheaper to buy or make my nut butters.

I've got the following recipes - going to the market later to price up the raw materials at the scoop and weigh, compared to the finished product in my Sainsburys

Almond Butter
Makes about 8 servings

170g Almonds
2tsp maple syrup
pinch salt

Blend the nuts on their own in a food processor until it starts becoming oily and buttery, then add the rest of the ingredients

Boleh · 26/04/2014 14:06

Woo - multiple NSVs to report Smile I managed my first even weekend FD today. I was teaching diving so out on the boat 8am to 4pm, I usually have an apple on the way there and a bag of snacks on the boat to 'keep me going' today I just took the apple, turned down offers of cupcakes from other divers and actually it was fine! Then when I got home I discovered a veggie moussaka recipe I could make for less than 400 calories per portion! Even with a single sneaky calamari ring and a piece of pineapple I don't think I'm too far over 500.

Much more excitingly though - 2 people commented that I'd lost weight - including the 1st guy to notice - hilariously in my office the ladies in the coffee shop have noticed but none of the men I work with!

Finally and even better I had forgotten to take extra weights for my students when diving and giving them two of the ones I 'needed' and I was still fine! For the non divers, since fat floats, the more of it you carry the more lead you need to sink - looks like my body fat % must have decreased despite my recent scale blip Smile

MazzleDazzle · 26/04/2014 14:19

Thank you Ali. Some of the clothes were truly hideous. Spent most of my 20s hidden in frumpy clothes. Determined to spend what's left of my 30s looking more glam! Who knows, maybe in my 40s I might even wear something above the knee! I am so glad I spent my teens flaunting my tanned, toned pins - they didn't last.

Well done on the hangover run Betsy. Hardcore!

Well I still haven't had anything to eat, so it looks like today will be a FD. I'm amazed at how much better I felt this morning having eaten well yesterday.

I have spiced parsnip soup and a spicy chicken salad with pomegranate waiting at home all for under 500 cals, so I have that to look forward to.

That almond butter recipe sure looks easy. I might try that tomorrow. I've been using Agave Nectar, a low GI natural alternative to sugar/sweetener, so I'll try it with that as it tastes quite maple-y and see how it goes.

It sounds like you've made some good food choices today almost. Hang in there. You'll get back into full on fasting again soon I'm sure.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2014 14:28

Ooh, I like your tat, Eat. What a fun way to celebrate NSVs.
Your DCs must think you are very cool for a mum !
Grin
Really good NSVs, Boleh. It sounds like your body composition is changing and your body fat % reducing, much more important than the scales.
Smile
Mazzle Any health food shop and many supermarkets have organic nut butters. Check you get the kind without added sugar, palm oil or other crap. Almond, cashew, hazelnut butters are yum too.
Looking at the labels, I'm sure one must be able to just bung nuts in a blender with a dash of salt, nothing else.
Hmm
Deviant Porridge with any nut butter and optionally stirring in some 90% choc - creamy and satisfying.
Smile
Well, my cleaning crew have worked their usual magic and my tip is sparkling clean again, so I'm off to the gym now:
HIIT spin, pressups, pullups, deadlifts and some Turkish Getups

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2014 14:30

Betsy I find training cures a headache from slaving over a hot computer at work all day.
Being nearly teetotal, I naturally couldn't say about hangovers
Smile

bbcessex · 26/04/2014 14:59

hello all... hope you don't mind me joining. Your success and inspirational stories have finally made me realise that I need to get a grip; I've been overweight for so long that I no longer realise what's 'normal'. For a short-ish person, I've always somehow 'got away' with being heavy, but I've put on another stone since Christmas and am now in proper miserable, overweight wobble-mode..

So - that's it. I started fasting again on Tuesday just gone; previously had reasonable success with 4:3, but used the NFD's as a pig out fest. I wouldn't know

Eatriskier · 26/04/2014 15:09

plec it was definitely more expensive to make my only lot of nut butter than to buy pre made, but the taste is beyond compare! I've also sourced a lot of nuts on a really cheap deal to make more in future (and that may mean its cheaper than pre made too).

TalkinPeace · 26/04/2014 16:35

Welcome BBCEssex
you have had the lightbulb moment and this is an excellent motivational support place.

Where I was working one day this week, the client has lost 6 stone and just discovered - at age 48 that she was not in fact "big boned" nor was her husband and her grown up daughters are realising the same ....

plecofjustice · 26/04/2014 16:39

I've just worked it out and I think it's cheaper for me to make my own, I can get a load of nuts cheaper at the scoop and weigh.

Just to say, my recipe will work with any nuts - the maple syrup and salt is optional, it will process without it.

BetsyBell · 26/04/2014 17:26

Oh it was worth it bigchoc Grin I don't do it very often these days, so when I do, I make it count!

SauvignonBlanche · 26/04/2014 17:47

I've fallen off the wagon over Easter and have gained 2kg. Sad
I've been doing ok on the FDs but taking the piss on the NFDs. Blush.
I'm going to finish my Hotel Chocolat Easter egg this weekend then try and be good again.
I'd got new work uniforms 3 sizes smaller and they fitted me just before Easter, it'll be a couple of weeks before I can wear them to work now.
