Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 41: Springing into March or marching into spring? Either way, more sunshine means easier fast days! Come and join us in getting healthier, the fast way.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: no limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: no rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).
  • BREASTFEEDERS: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: everybody needs enough sleep, or weight loss may be slowed.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Emma Don't worry, most of us relax on Saturday and enjoy a treat.
Smile
I had a reasonably healthy but greedy Saturday, with 3 huge meals, plus a jar of mixed nut butter.
I usually have Monday FD as reset button, to maintain.

For other NFDs, it helps to plan 2-3 healthy meals the day before.
This leaves less room for snacks and treats.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/03/2014 23:26

Thanks for mentioning clocks, Not2be. I totally forgot Blush

REMINDER clock change (UK) !

On Sunday, 30 March 1 am: clocks are turned forward 1 hour to 2 am

Eatriskier · 30/03/2014 08:25

Happy mums day to us all (especially the men amongst us who have become honorary mums by virtue of hanging here Wink)

MetellaEstMater · 30/03/2014 08:39

Happy Mother's Day to all - RL mothers, the men who are honorary mums on this board and those who don't have DCs but are matriarchs in the best sense to those of us on here Thanks !

MetellaEstMater · 30/03/2014 08:43

On another note I am so peeved about the clock change, it has curtailed my lie in. Treating myself to a circuits class this morning instead of a fry up. Times they are a changin.

Not2bObvious · 30/03/2014 09:23

Sod it, having breakfast in bed. Some days are meant to be enjoyed not endured, well all days should be enjoyed but ykwim. I'm still planning an hours working out before lunch though, I'm working on re-branding exercise as one of my treats, hardest part is starting, but by the time I've finished I'm on a high. I think my minds programmed to see it as a chore. Need a spot of brain rewiring!
Have received gorgeous customised card, my dd's were soo excited with surprising me with it. The majority of the niceness of today is their excitement, I'm of an age where I'm a bit cynical about the hallmark holiday'nesd of it - then I see their little faces all excited. Bless Smile.

MazzleDazzle · 30/03/2014 09:42

Looking forward to fasting tomorrow! Feel stuffed and bloated after a weekend of over-indulgence, which hasn't stopped yet! Ah well, it is mother's day after all, so will allow some extra nibbles.

What a lovely post Metella! Too true. Thanks to all!

For the first time ever I haven't bought anything for my DM or DMIL. I'll grab them a bunch of flowers and get the kids to draw them a pic later though. Usually I race around like a headless chicken on MD buying/delivering gifts to them. Neither of them are particularly maternal nor do they anything for anyone. My own DM suffers from mental health issues, but I know other people who do too and they aren't selfish or mean. Every MD I feel guilty and forces into buy

MazzleDazzle · 30/03/2014 09:44

...ing a card and gift. It feels so false.

One year when I was pretty young I bought a card saying 'If mothers were flowers you'd be the one I'd pick!' to which my mum said "Oh, I don't think so!"

At least she's under no illusions!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 30/03/2014 09:55

I know what you mean mazzle. I did the rounds yesterday instead of today (today is me n DD and cuddles) and DMIL decided to go out with bf at last minute tho DDs DF did take her out for a meal so she did see her actual son. I met DM at DGrans. DM read the paper the whole time and occasionally grunted to join in, never once asked about how DD and I were. DG cooked us burgers but mine was raw in the middle and for some reason she didn't cook anything for my DD and the just laughed and didn't offer tool cook anything once she realised. I took the earliest exit I could but it doesn't actually sound bad when I wrote it down.

I travelled over 100 miles each way for that Hmm

MelanieCheeks · 30/03/2014 10:33

I sent my Mum the DVD of Philomena, which she was thrilled to bits with. (The scene in the Irish bar was filmed in what used to be our local pub.)

I'm a little peeved that my own 2 (20 and 22, living in London) haven't sent me anything. They might call me later, but in my fantasies they'd managed to take a photo of themsleves together and Moonpigged me something......

Off for my usual Sunday morning long run soon.

Breadandwine · 30/03/2014 10:50

Why, thank you, Eat and Metella! 'Honorary mum', eh? I'll wear that badge with pride!

Happy Mum's day, everyone! I never had to bother with it myself when my mother was alive - she was very dismissive of the whole thing, saying it was an invented celebration.

But my wife reminds me every year that on her first Mother's Day, 37 years ago! I gave her a card which said 'Happy Mother's Day to my wife'. All she wanted was a card with 'Mummy' on it! Sad

EveesMummy (((hug))) You can choose your friends - you're stuck with your relatives!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 30/03/2014 11:14

Bread and wine, thank you! Also, aren't you better off as a dad? God knows DDs DF is by far the favourite! I heard that was normal... Wink

MetellaEstMater · 30/03/2014 11:34

Melanie, when I was that age it would have been midday at the earliest I'd be up and ringing mum! Hope they're in touch soon.

Back from circuits and lovely cards and a book from my DDs, well DH really as my two are tiny. Off for a pub lunch and long walk now. I think that on reflection today I may have pudding and a glass of wine, after all tomorrow I fast!

Tiredemma · 30/03/2014 15:33

I really lost my mojo this week- just mentally not in the frame of mind for fasting- God knows why but really struggling.

Plan to try again now from tomorrow (its a NEW DAY!!)

Megrim · 30/03/2014 15:47

I remember my first Mother's day - DS1 was about 2 weeks old, and I thought DH might do something special seeing as it would be my first ever one as a Mum. So what did DH do? Arranged to go on a day long bike ride with his mates. I think all I got a rather droopy bunch of wildflowers that he'd picked from the roadside Hmm

he has learned though - big box of nice chocolates from DH and a chocolate orange from each of the DSs (which they are busy tucking into already).

TwittyMcTwitterson · 30/03/2014 15:51

DDs DF doesn't really get it. He went out last night and stayed out. Drove home today. I got a card saying 'thanks for looking after me, from DD' and he's gone straight to bed.

We've been to the park before he was back. Now snuggling watching jake and the never land pirates. Fun!

DDs CM made sure I had some treats from DD but gave then to DGrandmas and Dgreat gran. Hmm

BetsyBell · 30/03/2014 16:07

evees, megrim and anyone else with useless DHs: I hope that Father's Day becomes Spend-the-day-with-dad-while-mum-goes-out Day Wink

OP posts:
TwittyMcTwitterson · 30/03/2014 16:34

Her dad says he can't wait for her to tell him that he's a great dad but before then it's all false and pointless! I usually do something reasonably impressive for him and hope he'll learn. Why does Mother's Day have to be first?!

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 30/03/2014 16:58

tiredemma I feel like that too, went to try some clothes on after my opticians appointment to give me a kick up the arse...

Emmabryant123 · 30/03/2014 19:24

Evening all happy mums day to all

Today I have had
Breakfast:
Two slices home made white bread with two fried eggs and two rashers of bacon made by dd1 and dh. Wasnt the best but was edible lol.
Dinner: roast chicken, roast spuds, stuffing, roast parsnips, carrots, green beans, broccoli and gravy
Hm triple choc (white, milk and dark) cake with ice cream
Fruit salad (banana, melon, pineapple, mango and kiwi)
Two coffees with semi skimmed milk and lots of water! No diet fizzy drinks for two days now yay or shop bought flavoured milk my addiction

Tomorrow for lunch at work I have a tub of minestrone soup just emptied it into my sistema soup jug and gave it a stir round with a spoon and put back in my fridge will take this and a banana. Going to be a 16:8 for me tomorrow. Any one tried this soup for before it didn't look very nice when I poured it in to the tub and gave it a stir. ?!

BetsyBell · 30/03/2014 19:43

Emma I don't know about the soup but word of warning: my sistema soup cup leaks a bit so I put a bag round it when I pack it. I transport my soup hot though so that might be the problem.

Eaten more than plenty today - seem to be have been a lot of sweet treats so I'm not looking forward to the sugar cravings tomorrow. Luckily fast day means I'm not allowed any so hopefully it'll have calmed down by NFDs. Must remember to make sure I don't 'accidentally' buy HCBs or other tasty, sweet baked goods tomorrow.

OP posts:
Emmabryant123 · 30/03/2014 20:51

Hmm might take a uncle bens rice time pot instead of the soup it smells far to basil like for my tasting yuk

Megrim · 30/03/2014 21:35

Betsy DS1 is now 16 so DH has had plenty of time for improvement!

Had a good day - managed to sneak out for a walk by myself, having spent all week walking with other people (which is fine) it's nice to have some me time and go at my own pace (I do like a good route march)

womblesofwestminster · 30/03/2014 21:36

For the anti-breakfast folk, what do you think about this?
