Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 41: Springing into March or marching into spring? Either way, more sunshine means easier fast days! Come and join us in getting healthier, the fast way.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: no limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: no rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).
  • BREASTFEEDERS: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: everybody needs enough sleep, or weight loss may be slowed.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

FD here, going OK so far, just had duck in plum and hoisin sauce with salad so have enough left for a hot chocolate and a yogurt later and that's me done.
Hospital tomorrow which I'm a bit worried about but trying not to eat my worry in biscuits!
On a positive note, I found 2 really nice boxes of 30 wedding invites/save the date/RSVP cards in our colour scheme (green) with no price on so took them to the checkout just to see how much they would be, expecting them to be out of our price range, and they scanned at £1.99 each! 60 invites for £3.98!

BetsyBell · 26/03/2014 17:52

Ipoked I'm sorry I don't remember if you've said why you're going to the hospital tomorrow but hope it goes ok x
Good work with the wedding stationery though :)

LikeaHurricane · 26/03/2014 18:28

Zed have sent you a PM re psoriasis, just been diagnosed so have a question.
Hope that's ok, Tia x

Helliecopter · 26/03/2014 18:28

Stop me. Successful FD until now. DD1 is really testing me and I don't know if I'm struggling to handle it because it's a FD or some other reason. I have just wolfed a finger of fudge and some ikea chocolate. Not a binge exactly and about 200 cals total but why have I done that to myself?! Gah! Running to choc/sugar isn't the way to deal with emotional stress...
Hoping typing this stops me eating the rest of the bar and anything else in the cupboards.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/03/2014 18:44

Hellie STOP !!!
Do not let Madam ruin your good work. You can win.

Take some deep breaths and walk briskly around the room carrying DD by the scruff of the neck

Now, drink a big glass of water and clean your teeth.
Hang on, you are nearly there.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/03/2014 18:47

Badger Best wishes for whatever you are having done at the hospital tomorrow. Try and have an early night, so you have plenty of sleep.

Info and Treatment

CiderwithBuda · 26/03/2014 18:58

Zed - sorry about the pox - as if you haven't had enough on this week!

Hellie - I struggled today too. Have had way more than 500 today. And two choc brownie bites as well. I think I'll be about 800 cals again. Better than it could have been but not as good as it could have been either!

Tomorrow is another day! I feel quite full now so that is a plus I suppose. Currently drinking a fennel tea. Come on - we can do it! Stopping now means we can still count it as an FD. Carrying on means we can't. You can have it (within reason!) tomorrow.

Helliecopter · 26/03/2014 19:03

Thank you, thank you. Teeth brushed and water consumed.
I've stopped. Still a FD. Still a FD. Food isn't comfort!!

Breathe!

BigChocFrenzy · 26/03/2014 19:12

Well done, Hellie, nearly there.
Also, try to have an early night. Sleep is always good.

Helliecopter · 26/03/2014 19:18

It is, maybe I'd better not watch the new series of Masterchef later...

MetellaEstMater · 26/03/2014 19:34

Sorry to hear about the pox zed. Wish I'd known about the oats in muslin when DD1 had it but I'll store that gem in case DD2 catches it at some point.

Tough NFD here! Been trying to keep to TDEE of 1700 cals but Monday's FD, eating below TDEE yesterday simply because DH was out and I went to bed early and a lot of exercise this week tempted me to the sugar! I won't be hugely over and am telling myself that my body must need the extra calories for breastfeeding as I was stupidly hungry. Healthy dinner (stuffed marrow) cooking now though.

Southeastdweller · 26/03/2014 19:43

Well done Hellie. I bet you're going to feel great in the morning.

LikeaHurricane · 26/03/2014 19:54

BCF thanks for the info, once again you are so helpful.
Zed I'm really interested in what dose of Royal Jelly you recommend??
TIA xx

DorisAllTheDay · 26/03/2014 19:56

Gawd, it's been the most frenetic day at work. I'm absolutely exhausted, and I haven't read through today's posts, I'll do that later. But the good news is I haven't had time to eat anything so it's an FD success! I'm going to crack open the New Covent Garden soup before I head home because I'm ravenous and I don't think I could resist the chippy if I leave work before eating. Hope everyone's OK and FDs have gone well.

zedzedzed · 26/03/2014 19:56

Thanks for that BCF am reading now

Wish I could remember who told me about the jelly, mazzle meg??
Have messaged you back hurricane

Well done all you fasties...CLOSE THE KITCHEN, GO BATHE, THEN GO BED (before y'all cock it up with night-time munchies!)

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 26/03/2014 20:12

Thanks, its just a meeting with my consultant - had one ovary removed when I was pregnant with ds1 due to a cyst growing on it that twisted/bled.
Now the other side has another cyst that's causing problems (I've had bleeding for the last 4 weeks out of 6 and some pain) so I have to talk about having it removed too, obviously meaning no more children and early menopause...

Sorry about the pox zed

And stay strong Hellie FD is so nearly over so don't spoil it!

Helliecopter · 26/03/2014 20:17

Thank you southeastdweller and badger Grin

Watching Secret Eaters on ch4 now...a good reminder that at least I'm conscious about what I eat!!

CiderwithBuda · 26/03/2014 20:18

That sounds worrying Badger. Hope it goes ok.

Am bolstering my willpower by watching The Biggest Loser! And planning an early night.

Well done on resisting so far Hellie. Not long to go now!

Southeastdweller · 26/03/2014 20:25

Pep To answer your question from Monday night, one of the great things about 5:2 is that I mostly don't want to overeat on an automatic, sub-concious level when I get the odd bout of head hunger (which was off the scale pre-5:2) and when I do eat I actively seek healthy foods. But sometimes the old demons return and rewriting the script in my head is a tool I've learnt to deploy along with being busy and always having a lot of healthy and nourishing food at home. I've realised that, after 30-odd years of comfort eating, that being kind to myself is as important as taking action.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/03/2014 20:39

well done Doris - nearly there!

Glad I only had breakfast-for-lunch earlier - full of curry. I only did a small amount of rice between us - DD doesn't like much and I didn't want to fill on white carb.

MazzleDazzle · 26/03/2014 21:24

Royal Jelly wasn't me zed, but thanks for the tip as my youngest DD has psoriasis on the backs of her hands, cheeks and arms. So far, nothing has worked.

HIIT class this morning and the gym tonight! Circuit training tomorrow! I'm a busy bee. Trying to fit in as much as I can before the school breaks up for Easter hols.

With re. to my monthly monster PMT I def. need to try something. I have an IUD in my arm. No periods initially, then very heavy and frequent. Periods have settled down now, but what used to be a day of 'hanger' is now a fortnight!

NFD here - just finished a bowl of Rhubarb Crumble. Lovely! FD tomorrow in preparation for my monthly measurement taking!

Lost another pound so that's 2 stone! Waist is now below half my height too. Can anyone tell me what a healthy body fat percentage is, please?

Not2bObvious · 26/03/2014 21:37

Nfd here and I've gone over a tad damn you toast But I've closed the kitchen and what's done is doneGrin
FD tomorrow, but due to an evening appointment I'll be breaking my fast around 4, so that's a bit easier. I'm sure I'll have plenty of company to help me through, only 18.5 hours til food lol!

Blondieminx · 26/03/2014 21:45

Evening all & well done to all the FDer's today; doing mine tomorrow. Have noted the tip of closure of kitchen, early bath and bed and will add that in tomorrow! Smile

Also going to pop to Holland & Barrett in search of royal jelly as I've got bad eczema on my hands ATM and I'm wondering if it'll help, will give it a whirl. Have prepped all my food for tomorrow's FD at work. Have a meeting I'm dreading ugh!

Wishing the mini zed's better soon and hoping Betsy's son has a good sleep.

Anyone seen Reindeer?

DorisAllTheDay · 26/03/2014 22:15

Well prepped, Blondie, and good luck with tomorrow's meeting. No sign of reindeer as far as I can see. I hope she's OK.

Mazzle, congratulations on your SV, and it's brilliant that you're down to a healthy waist:height ratio. Well done. I hope everything's calmed down, Hellie and well done for surviving meltdown central without resorting to food. Zed, sorry to hear about the pox. I hope no-one has it too badly. Good luck with your appointment tomorrow, Badger, and Cider, I hope the Biggest Loser helped you power on through the evening without weakening.

I got home without incident. When I got in I went to the fridge for some cheese, it being the only comfort food I have in the house, thinking I could just eat 200 calories worth which would still bring my FD in at 600 calories. However, I know quite well it wouldn't stop there, so I decided to log on here and postpone the cheese-eating. And again I've lost my appetite. Yay! So it looks as if I'll be bringing today's FD in at 400 calories which must be my lowest so far.

I'm going away tomorrow till Monday, to a course at a residential adult education centre. I've been there before and I know what the deal is so I've given some thought to how to stay within shouting distance of TDEE. Here's the plan. I'll skip breakfast which should be OK as it means I can have an extra hour in bed a lovely country walk instead. Lunch is buffet style, and I've MFP'd for long enough to know what makes a healthy choice and what quantities I should have. Evening meal could be harder but I'll do my best to max out on veggies and limit the carbs. I've promised myself that if I have fruit for pud on the first three nights I can reward myself with a 'proper' desert on the Sunday night, which is the last night. I'll have to avoid drinks in the bar but I don't mind as I'm not that fussed about alcohol. And binging will be impossible because the centre's in the middle of nowhere, not a Sainsbury's for miles, so I'd have to take truckloads of chocolate with me for consuming in my bedroom in the evenings. And of course I'm not about to do that!

I might not have much opportunity to post while I'm away, but I'll be thinking of you all. Wish me luck staying close to TDEE!
