Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 41: Springing into March or marching into spring? Either way, more sunshine means easier fast days! Come and join us in getting healthier, the fast way.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: no limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: no rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).
  • BREASTFEEDERS: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: everybody needs enough sleep, or weight loss may be slowed.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

If I lose a pound next week it'll be 2 stone in 4 months. I haven't deprived myself at all, nor have I had a massive binge. A few takeaways and a few more glasses of wine too!

As for tips...just what BC said.

  • Since Mon, on my NFD I've stuck to 16:8 (2 meals only, no snacking)
  • weighed everything/tallied it up on MFP.
  • No alcohol/sugar mid week.
  • 3 HIIT workouts and 1 x circuit training.

Going to try to stick to these rules Mon - Fri

Period was last week too, so that helped.

Well done thinkcan! I hope I am that spritely when I'm your age.

Hang in there Primal. If the tape measure is going down the scales are sure to follow.

MazzleDazzle · 21/03/2014 14:02

By the way...I've been meaning to ask, is there a Sweetheart lurking?

Back in Dec I was following WW and met her on a general 'weight loss over Christmas' type thread. It was she who introduced me to this WOL.

Thank you Thanks. This is the best thing that's ever happened to me! (Other than graduation/DH/LOs etc!)

CiderwithBuda · 21/03/2014 14:30

Hi all.

Mazzle - well done. Good resul!

Zed - enjoy your weekend 'off'. See you Monday for FD.

Betsy - Hope every is ok with your DS. I'm sure it will be now you know what is going on and that it is deal-able with. Worrying while you are going through it though and very scary facing an op.

On 3rd FD of the week. Going well so far. Although I was really hungry this morning so had a sachet of the Lighter Life 5:2 porridge. It did fill me up well all morning and I was fine doing my spinning class. Came home and had a huge plate of rocket and 150 cals worth of chilli and coriander prawns with balsamic. Whose idea was that up thread? Nice one! Felt much more than the actual calories. Have a Sainsburys ready meal for tonight. I know I am relying a bit much on processed food at the moment but that will change. I just find it easier to know exactly what I am having calorie wise.

Off for a massage this afternoon. Sounds lovely doesn't it? Unfortunately it's not a lovely gentle massage but deep and hard core and hurts!

Breadandwine · 21/03/2014 15:02

About the age thing, for new readers, I'm in my mid-seventies but I feel like a fit forty-year-old. If only I could find one.

Grin

And, since I started body-weight exercises in Nov and kettlebell exercises in Jan, my desire for s weet things is massively reduced.

I don't think I've ever been happier!

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2014 15:47

And you've regained that important inch with pullups

PrimalLass · 21/03/2014 16:44

Thank you Mazzle, good tips.I will def do the 16:8 and add in some 30 day shred next week.

School show tonight so I do need wine though ...

zedzedzed · 21/03/2014 17:00

I'm drinking aniseed booze by myself (well, the baby's here but she's not keen on aniseed it seems)...the sun is nowhere near the yard arm...and I love it!

Strangely my licence to Birthday Binge hasn't really happened (hence booze before sundown!)
Yes, I've had toast and marmite, a bacon sandwich, a stilton panini and some prawn crackers. I know, right, a lot of white-shite carbs (my poison of choice).

But hear me out, there was no jumbo sausage chippy supper, no cream cakes, no giant sausage rolls, no share-sized chocolate or entire baguettes with brie and not even a whiff of a family-sized peperoni pizza.

I suspected before, but now I know for sure; something has happened to my body and/or brain...I only want real food now...I still want more of it than I should.

I can have anything I want out for dinner tonight, and what I want isn't junk or even terribly binge-worthy, what I want is a good steak and salad and some really nice cheese with apple afterwards. The End.

I am going to get pissed up though, being Scottish and all you really can't stay sober on your fake birthday.

XXX

PS Mazzle, still so chuffed for your SV!

DorisAllTheDay · 21/03/2014 17:28

Well done, Metella. Great SV.

Zed, that's fantastic that you only want good food. I live in hope... I do hope you really enjoy your piss-up birthday dinner. You certainly deserve it!

NFD on track so far. But I still have to get through my food shop - wish me luck, everyone.

I have mixed feelings about hitting my 50s. On the one hand, I've enjoyed every decade more than the one that went before it. They've all had their ups and downs of course, but my 30s were on the whole more enjoyable (and certainly more settled!) than my 20s, and my 40s have been the best so far. So on that basis I'm looking forward to my 50s in the expectation that they'll be even better still. I'm certainly a whole lot more confident and sure of myself than earlier in life, not to mention financially much more secure. But on the other hand my dad had a massive heart attack at 50 and my mum died of cancer at 56. Both weight/lifestyle related problems, and like them I'm a lifelong eater of the wrong food and too much of it. I know it's irrational and anyone can go at any time, but I can't get rid of the feeling that once I'm over 50 my curtains will soon be coming down. That's my real motivator for wanting to get the eating and weight thing sorted before my 50th birthday. I can't honestly say I care that much about what I look like having always been overweight, but I do care that I might be setting myself up to join my parents before I'm ready.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/03/2014 17:29

So... the not feeling hungry on FD+1 .... I had a lot of tea this morning and an almond mocha but didn't feel like breakfast so thought I might as well wait till lunch. But then something came up, it was about 2pm when DH suggested a dog-walk .... returned after 3pm to realise I'd still not eaten. Had half a smoked mackerel with a slice of buttered homemade toast. Just now DD wanted a banana smoothie (banana, Total 0%, skimmed milk .... Shock dd ingesting non-sugared dairy) - one banana makes two glasses so I had some of that.

TalkinPeace · 21/03/2014 18:06

Wow, lots of people doing really well.
I've done 16:8 and two fasts this week, neither of which was followed by a 500 cal supper
but I was back down to the lower end of my comfy range today so might make the effort in to drop the bikini pounds for Easter
but tonight is Wine and more Wine

MetellaEstMater · 21/03/2014 19:07

Cheers Talkin Wine. Bottle of Oyster Bay open here!

Thanks Doris! It marks half a stone in three weeks of 5:2, combined with HIIT and circuits.

MazzleDazzle · 21/03/2014 19:57

(Raises her Wine to Talkin and Metella)

Olives, bread sticks and cream cheese here tonight instead of the cheap chocolate, Haribo and cheese I used to scoff alongside my weekend wine. You're right zed, the body definitely craves better food.

Still (almost!) off the sugar. In 5 days, other than 2 small chocolate krispies that the kids made and half a dozen mini eggs - I've had no biscuits, no chocolate, no sweets, no puddings, no cake! A miracle since I used to think nothing of eating a whole pack of cookies or a whole Heinz treacle pudding or a family box of cream cakes Blush sometimes all at once! Since starting 5:2 I've now moved on to 70% chocolate, but haven't had any this week!

Gosh Doris how worrying for you as you approach your 50s. There are many people on this thread, myself included, who are doing this to lead longer lives than their parents and grandparents. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were all still on this thread 20 years from now!

DH and I are to watch Irvine Welsh's Filth Shock tonight since it's on sky store and we've a voucher for a free film. Wish me luck!

TalkinPeace · 21/03/2014 20:11

ps, for those who do not know, i'm nearly 49 & have teenage kids

EagleRay · 21/03/2014 21:21

Metella - I would like to introduce 5:2 to my DM as well - she's in her 70s and been dieting pretty much all her life and never lost any weight! I haven't seen her since December and haven't told her I'm doing 5:2 - just hoping she will be sufficiently surprised when she sees me next to find out about it and try it for herself.

I did my weekly measurements last night and have lost 17cm in a week (spread over 8 different areas) - think part of it is hormonal though. Also weighed myself this morning and another pound gone which brings me to 8lb in just over 4 weeks! Was meant to be weight training and doing HIIT at the gym this eve but had to cancel as I've got a cold and just don't feel up to it. Will definitely do a long walk tomorrow though and reschedule gym for sunday hopefully.

Mazzle well done on your nearly-2 stone loss - I would love to have my thin trousers fall done one day (need to get them past my knees first though). I've been losing weight so far at around the same rate as you but am not sure I will keep up the same pace.

Zedzedzed you asked what % of protein, fat and carbs were coming up on MFP? I didn't even realise it could do that so had a look! Mine cam up as 52% carbs, 33% fat and 15% protein. This weeks' breakdown so far has been slightly less carbs at 49%, 32% and 19% respectively but it's made me a bit more conscious about carbs now. Tonight I reduced the amount of rice I had and substituted it for some steamed veg.

We might be going on hols in 4 weeks' time - that's still time to lose another half stone but feel a bit panicky about it. Still, it's not like anyone's going to arrest and deport me for being a bit lardy, is it?

annielewis · 21/03/2014 21:26

Marking place - am desperate to get back on here as have slipped off the wagon badly! Starting back on Sunday with first FD on Monday - need to post it on here for a bit of self induced accountability. Have got dreadful sugar cravings/binges at the moment.

Glad to see some familiar names on here and looking forward to getting to know newbies....

DorisAllTheDay · 21/03/2014 22:33

Just dropping in to report a successful NFD, about 100 calories short of TDEE and very low carb. That's two days on track, which feels great as I was beginning to think the monster had got the better of me. I'm planning a slightly higher carb day tomorrow, with some fruit as a treat. But no refined carbs as they'll set the monster loose. And I got through my food shop without incident! Bastard Sainsburys did their best to trip me up by plonking hot cross buns on special offer (2 packs for a pound) among the veggies, and triple chocolate cookies by the checkout. But I held firm.

Hello annie. I'm newly back after a major fall off the wagon. I've been dealing with sugar cravings and binging like you wouldn't believe (the monster within has been in charge), but I"m clambering back one day at a time with the help of the fabulous people on this thread.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/03/2014 22:42

There you go, annie - a back-on-the-wagon buddy for you. Doris setting you a good example there!

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2014 22:52

That's a great return, Doris An excellent first FD and NFD.
You've started to gradually lose that weight again.
Smile
Welcome back, Annie.
If your 1st FD is Monday, try to plan your weekend meals in advance, to stay within TDEE Saturday and Sunday.
That will avoid adding weekend binge weight to what you need to lose.

CiderwithBuda · 21/03/2014 23:03

Great FD here until I succumbed to wine after dinner. Would have been fine if DH wasn't here! Maybe I need to get rid of him? Although maybe that's a bt drastic.

Oh well. Could have been a of worse. Will either walk or go to gym tomorrow.

Doris - you are doing well! Keep at it and your gain will soon be gone.

Annie - hi - I'm new but really enjoying this. The thread is so good for helping keep on at it.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2014 23:13

Cider Would your DH like to join you on 5:2 (to save himself being scragged)?
Even do it for the fasting health benefits, if he doesn't have a spare ounce to lose.

annielewis · 21/03/2014 23:19

(Waves at Doris)

Thanks all, I need the inspiration Doris, looks like you're doing great!! The carb/sugar monster has truly got hold here....
Tomorrow is going to be a bit of a write off as out at Inlaws so not as easy to control food (MIL is a cake fiend) but planning a good healthy day on Sunday and then get cracking on Monday.

Have a great weekend everyone.. Smile

Peplum41 · 21/03/2014 23:21

doris and annie

I am rubbish at 5:2. I've been doing it just over a year, if I was to compare my weightloss with others it would look pitifully slow. I can probably count the days I have eaten within TDEE on one hand. I try not to snack, but I'm not very good at that either. My average monthly weightloss is often 1/4 lb a month. Then next month I put it back on again.

I'm not sad though. This isn't a pity me please post! I'm thrilled because somehow, I've lost 2 stone, clothes I've had for years fit and look nice. I've started running again, something I've wanted to do for years but was too heavy. The weightloss is so slow its almost stealthy. What keeps me going, apart from this thread, is the idea that I'm doing it to be healthy, not fashionable. I'm not scientifically minded like bigchoc and tip, but I am interested in the effects this diet has on three things, insulin, ghrelin and leptin. Others diets mess them up, dooming the hapless dieter to failure. This wol fixes them.

Sits back with a glass of red hoping that some nice clever person will explain why insulin, ghrelin and leptin are important.

mazzle well done.

betsy old bean, best wishes for your son, and you for having to worry about him. X

Peplum41 · 21/03/2014 23:30

Excuse me Mr breadandwine, but does Mrs breadandwine know you're cruising the mumsnet threads looking for "fit forty year olds" ?

Don't know where you think that extra inch will get you.

Need grin emoticon but on lame phone.

EagleRay · 21/03/2014 23:31

Insulin, ghrelin and leptin? Sounds like names you'd give gnomes Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 21/03/2014 23:33

peplum - if you've lost 2 stone in a little over a year then your average monthly weight loss must have been about 2lb - which is way faster than mine. But like you I'm happy with very gradual loss (rather than inexorable slow gain).
