Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 41: Springing into March or marching into spring? Either way, more sunshine means easier fast days! Come and join us in getting healthier, the fast way.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: no limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: no rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).
  • BREASTFEEDERS: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: everybody needs enough sleep, or weight loss may be slowed.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Zed The hardest part is the pretending to your kids that you're not terrified! The hospital stuff has happened really quickly, which has helped. The stress of looking after the weird growth has been awful (pyogenic granuloma to anyone who fancies googling the gruesomeness) - it's like looking after an open wound, except it sticks out, and is in awkward place so gets painfully bashed at least once a day. And bleeds a lot.

OP posts:
DorisAllTheDay · 20/03/2014 18:16

Ooh, lots of us turning 40 next year!

Any other oldies turning 50? Or just me?

Piecofjustice that's a late evening meal - or are you not in the UK? I'm still going strong. It's past my 6.00 goal and I've decided to finish a report I'm working on before I stop for tea. At this rate I'll be eating about 7.00. Hope everyone else's FDs are going well.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/03/2014 18:24

Doris - there's a few of us over 50 ...and I'm not sure we think of ourselves as 'oldies', I don't and I'm 53. BigChoc is IIRC 57 and B&W is over 70 though you wouldn't guess it from their activity level!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 20/03/2014 18:25

I've joined the gym. 26 a month isn't bad. Did get a lecture of 'well we are t gonna see each other now are we'

Sometimes I wonder if we spend our time on this earth wisely. Another very sad day. I'd much rather be a nomadic hunter gatherer that gets to spend all day with DD.

Helliecopter · 20/03/2014 18:26

Chug chug...FD dinner done. Slightly disappointing cauliflower and chickpea curry but somehow I've managed to bring it in at about 400 cals. So I have a few to play with before I close the kitchen.

What are you all doing for dinner, fellow fasters?

Some really interesting posts today everyone! Only catching up on my phone and I find it hard to remember what's been going on and all the replies I want to write. It's my age. And baby sleep deprivation.

You doing ok Zed?!

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2014 18:31

I intend to be a disgraceful 60, then 70, then ..... so keep going as I am
Grin

slopping around in jeans, tee & Nikes all day, going to the gym 5-6 x weekly to beat the hunks at Tabata and situps .... and leer at 'em
Grin

What's in a number ? 57, 60, so what ?

Megrim · 20/03/2014 18:45

I've got a couple of years to go before the big Hawaii Five 0. I also intend to see out my years in DCs (that's trainers, not kids), jeans and Gap t-shirts.

Boring tea of tinned salmon and salad, as I couldn't be arsed to wait for anything to cook in the oven and I didn't fancy an omelette. Still, pizza and beer to look forward to tomorrow.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 20/03/2014 19:10

Age is just a number and in sure you all look and feel fantastic.

The big 3-0 is fast approaching me mentally there are times I don't feel older than I did at 10 and others 16 and I'm hugely certain I won't handle it well. I've already come to terms with grey hair and wrinkles but strangely, not death! Hmm

Dumpyandabdabs · 20/03/2014 19:29

FD here, its been ok, managed most of the day but had to have a cup a soup at around 2 to keep me going. Just had some stir fry with a smidge of rice. Have spied some lushious looking hot cross buns at the local bakery so may have to treat myself to one of those tomorrow.

I'm new to posting but remember reading your posts Doris when I was just lurking so welcome back to you. Sure you can get back on the wagon.

Still not located the cherry and cinnamon tea yet but all we have in the village is a teeny co-op so may have to travel further afield for it.

My sympathies to those posters with little ones, my youngest started school last year so its a little easier to find time for exercise on my days off and at least mine don't have to suffer at the hands of my "hanger" (I so love that phrase) all day long!

Anyway not long til bedtime so fingers crossed we can all hang on in there.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 20/03/2014 19:53

EveesMummy, I'm 30 next year- holding onto the fact that I'm not 29 yet, but it's very scary.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/03/2014 19:56

Just had my dinner - same as Tuesday. Glad I managed to make it through my phone meeting before eating - I'm feeling pleasantly well-fed at the moment. Might even make it through the evening without using the 100 cals I've got left.

LakeFlyPie · 20/03/2014 20:04

Evening all, this thread moves so fast I can barely keep up!
2nd FD here which is going well I think (it's not over 'til bedtime). Just tea, coffee, water and a couple of peppermints and have been busy all day which has helped. Planning baked potato and leftover mushroom goulash from FD on Tuesday, might add some spinach for a bit of greenery.
Woke with a peculiar pain which has been there on and off all day. I think it might be heartburn which I've never had before. Had a takeaway curry last night on NFD but am used to spicy food and didn't eat anything I've not had before. Have taken a ranitidine but not sure if it's made much difference. Anyone have experience of heartburn related to this 5:2 malarkey?

Helliecopter · 20/03/2014 20:24

I've got about 100 cals left too Errol and I think I might be able not to eat them. No harm in that, is there?

DH just asked me about Mother's Day and what I would like to do. Hard to think of something that doesn't revolve around food! I've suggested if the weather is nice we could plan a long walk and picnic so I can control what food I'm eating without panicking and choosing the wrong things from a menu Any suggestions?

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 20/03/2014 20:36

Im coming up 30 too (sad thought that I've only been happy with my body a few years out of 3 decades but hopefully that will change soon)
Dumpy twinings cherry and cinnamon tea is available online if you can't get to a shop that has any

Chocupid · 20/03/2014 21:11

Yay well done Doris knew you could do it... Doesn't it feel good?

Nearly there now, I saved a few cals incase I needed something sweet between dinner and bed, but I don't think I need it, just peppermint tea before bed and I can chalk up a FD
But I will be getting some 90% Lindt choc! as all the Easter eggs in the shops are very tempting to a chocoholic Angry

Age has never bothered me tbh, I loved my 30's and now I'm enjoying my 40's but I'm buggered if I can remember if I'm 43, 44, or 45 without calculating... That's age for you eh! Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2014 21:27

Hey, Doris I hope the FD finished to plan. Good feeling to be back on track, isn't it.
I usually clean my teeth to close the kitchen.

Now, why not roughly plan your next 3 NFDs, so you have enjoyable activities and healthy meals to eat over the weekend, maybe a glass of Wine too.

zedzedzed · 20/03/2014 21:30

Thank Christ this beatch of a day is done.
Opened some lovely presents and cards tonight, ate my Crap from fridge Casserole (pretty yummy for soggy veg, chicken, chorizo and rice swill). I desperately wanted to eat remains of Crap Cake, never more so than when Cantankerous Nanny handed me an impossible shopping list of nonexistent foodstuffs with no names and very specific requirements to get for her tomorrow.
Thankfully I'll be one baby short all day so it'll be a rare treat to bus it into town, potter round shops and eat lunch without that toddler cacophony, just baby cooing. Think I'll drink cocktails before noon, spend birthday money on fripperies then have fried things in a cafe with a magazine.

Dinner and drinks out with DH tomorrow night, then meeting friends for lunch on Saturday, a hugely enjoyable and tdee-busting weekend will ensue, but once a year only so bring it on I say.

Well done all you FD peeps, we brought this train in,and specially doris and all those who really needed a win today. NOW GO TO BED BEFORE WE FECK IT UP!

DorisAllTheDay · 20/03/2014 21:43

Drum roll...

I have a successful FD to report! And apart from the odd hunger pang which didn't freak me out, it wasn't that hard. Why on earth did I let it all go to pot these last few weeks? I successfully negotiated all the bun and bagel palaces Sainsburys locals and chocolate and cake caverns newsagents on the way home from work without even thinking about going in. It's such a relief to know I can do this - and yes, Chocupid, it feels brilliant. But why on earth haven't I been able to for the last three weeks? Funny things, addictions.

Good to hear about other successful FDs and spare 100 calories knocking around! Congratulations, everyone. Lake I've not experienced heartburn related to 5:2 but as you woke up with the pain, maybe it's not to do with 5:2 in your case either? I hope it goes away soon, whatever's caused it.

Helliecopter · 20/03/2014 21:45

I can never remember my age either. I could be anything from 34-37...I have to count (I'm 36!).

Yay zed that's the spirit. Bring on your epic birthday weekend.

Well done Doris and everyone else who's fasted today! WE ROCK!

DorisAllTheDay · 20/03/2014 21:47

Ooops, missed your posts, BigChoc and Zed. Thanks, both. It means a lot to know that there are people out there thinking about me and wishing me a successful FD.

Sorry you've had such a rubbish day, Zed. I hope you make up for it by having a lovely time tomorrow. And yes, bed right now before anything bad can happen!

CiderwithBuda · 20/03/2014 21:48

Evening all!

Doris - I will be 50 in May. Although the physio I saw today was talking about wear and tear on th joints from your 30s and then did a double take and rechecked my date of birth! Grin. And I had no make up on! Happy days!

Except for the wear and tear and aching joints!

I still feel abut 26 I think. But have to say I'm nt looking forward to fifty. Pissed off at myself that I have spent the last 25 years over weight.

Reasonable day here for a NFD. Until DH came home! I succumbed to some wine. Food has been good though. Need to check my calories but think I am ok.

Another FD tomorrow. Third one of the week.

Octopus37 · 20/03/2014 21:55

Have successfully done my FD today, highly recommend the soups in the Waitrose Love Life range Had Lemon Ramen today, came in at just under 300 cals for the pot, also soup with celeriac and spinach in it came in at 204 cals. Had a pint of diet coke at the pub just now. Will be lovely to be able to eat tomorrow night, going out for dinner tomorrow night.

Helliecopter · 20/03/2014 22:05

Why the hell am I looking up Bundt recipes on Pinterest? Go to bed woman, before you ruin this brilliant FD!!

plecofjustice · 20/03/2014 22:20

I do a yoga class from 7-9, hence the late dinner. Made it though! Nice lunch packed for tomorrow :)

MazzleDazzle · 20/03/2014 22:20

zed your granny sounds like one of Roald Dahl's characters! And we all know what happened to the old bag in George's Marvellous Medicine...don't go getting any ideas Wink

I hit 30 a couple of years ago and it was bloody hard, but after 30 I couldn't care! My boss is in her 60s and is a fit, ferocious fox!

Tigger your weight loss is incredible! As is yours Doris! Your current gain is nothing! Pah, before you know it you'll be back to the weight you were!

Weigh day for me tomorrow. Have maintained for 3 weeks, but lost cms and fitness/flexibility has improved. Praying to the scale god though (you better hear me you bugger!).

Oh and Betsy, how awful for your poor DS! Hopefully the end is in sight now though Thanks.

And I nearly forgot...successful FD here, just under 500. It must have been an easy one if I almost forgot to mention it!
