Fasting / 5:2 diet

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

FD for me here and another lb gone forever. Grin

Planning a LOF until supper tonight, which will be a seafood, pea and red pepper risotto. A 60 gram serving of Arborio risotto rice is only 206 cals, so the whole dish comes in at just under 400 cals (and will be stuffed full of the good stuff, I love my seafood). I'll add some dried chilli flakes if it tastes too bland.

Good luck all Monday fasters.

Chocupid · 10/03/2014 09:36

FD for me too today, this beautiful weather has scared focused me, thinking what will I wear in the summer if I'm still fat Shock

Luckily I'm craving fish, after gin soaked afternoon yesterday... so will be LOF too diablo I'm with you, till dinner.
Off to rummage on the recipe thread for a nice fish dish.

Good luck to all fasting today, hope this weather is focusing you too!

ErrolTheDragon · 10/03/2014 10:35

FD for me - had to start it with my usual few large cups of tea as I didn't sleep well last night and have the German exchange student here - who is shy but fortunately her English is a lot better than DDs German. I'll give them pizza and salad for tea, DH can have spag bol (leftover sauce from last night) and I'll have a ready meal to keep it simple.

Glorious day here so we went for a walk by a nearby river.

womblesofwestminster · 10/03/2014 10:52

BigChoc So, people who work out a lot do best on high carb/low fat diets?

womblesofwestminster · 10/03/2014 11:01

Wombles. Just saying porridge doesn't work for me.

I just started eating porridge recently, and it doesn't fill me much either Confused I was wondering if that was because of the added sugar, or whether porridge just wasn't for me. That's why I asked what you put with yours.

Does anyone else find weekends an absolute nightmare?

I think it's our cultural mentality - that weekends are for letting your hair down.

*Also, does anyone else find they get completely obsessed with a particular unhealthy food?
*

Maltesers are my killer Blush BigChoc said I could have 1000 cals per week as my only treat so once a week I'm going to have a big box, and thoroughly enjoy it. :)

MrsFlorrick · 10/03/2014 11:23

Wombles. My porridge was "raw" with nuffink but the milk it was made with.

womblesofwestminster · 10/03/2014 11:24

This news just in: I feel prettier and prettier by the day Grin

The power of weight loss!

TalkinPeace · 10/03/2014 11:39

Yay wombles

MrsFlorrick · 10/03/2014 11:45

Wombles glad you feel pretty. Grin Excellent.

DS has a cold and cough and was up all night. I feel and look 100 today. Hmm Argh when will the DC finally actually sleep at night and leave me alone??!!! Confused

Just finished my JM Ripped in 30 workout (fasted workout Bigchoc).

Feel better now and shower helped. I am really hoping DS wants a little nap after lunch before school run so I can put my head down too. Otherwise I don't think I will survive today.

FIL is still in hospital. His "simple" cancer OP which was supposed to take 2 hrs took over 8 and he was supposed to home 48hrs later.
So much for that! They've clearly screwed up. He has been in hospital for 2 weeks now and is now so weak he can't stand.
He has had another CT and MRI because the nurses didn't support him properly in the shower and he fell and they thought he had broken his leg and hip. He is totally bruised and battered and has two infections. One in the back passage where they cut the cancer out and another by the stoma bag. Hmm Angry Useless. MIL is far too meek to speak up and question anyone in a white coat.
FIL tells us all to leave it be.

Well I'm an interfering loud mouth naggy Scandinavian witch so I've phoned the hospital and spoken to the ward sister and the surgeons PA and demanded answers whilst making frequent use of the word negligence.
It's immediately been effective. FILs had a sponge procedure to soak up infection (why the feck didn't they do this a week ago??!!) and a new iV broad spectrum antibiotic. Again why not last week when they knew he had two infections??

Useless. I am so AngryAngryAngryAngry
DH is flying up to nag them and look seriously at what they have done (and not done!).

Annoyed with DH because he refused to phone hospital and have a go at them.

Why is it always left to me to be the bad guy to get things sorted or at least moving

Rant over. Sorry about that. Back toy FD.
Despite a fasted workout, I am now so hungry I am eyeing up the guinea pigs hay cookies. Confused
I have soup for lunch but I could actually eat a 5 course meal.

Eatriskier · 10/03/2014 12:01

Flowers mrsF - sometimes you just need to be an interfering loud mouth. Well done to you

wombles Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2014 12:08

Wombles And because you are losing fat and (hopefully) learning to eat more healthily, your insides are prettier too

All IF / 5:2ers - Sweet Treats
Total abstinence could cause craving and bingeing.
Everyone, even those giving up sugar for a few weeks:
Allow yourself at least one day per week when you can have a treat

Personally, my treats are from the pud trolley of good restaurants, so the remaining ingredients are good quality, even when made with sugar.

Try to keep to the 80% rule:
At least 80% of your calories each week should be healthy

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2014 12:23

MrsF Flowers
Thank goodness you are pushy - your PIL's life may depend on it.
(your DH seems wimpy in external situations, like so many domestic bullies)

Sadly, elderly patients are too often neglected by the NHS.
I have bitter experience re my late mother - my solicitor had to send them warning letters reminding them of their legal responsibilities.

Other friends with elderly Mums reported the same catalogue of neglect:

  • food and water not within reach, or they are not fed when incapable of doing so themselves
  • left dirty, insufficient bed baths, not wiping face & hands after meals, or even cleaning after vomiting
  • insufficient help to go to the loo, rarely changing filled continence pads or replacing soiled sheets
  • doctors are very casual and treat the elderly as low prio, also don't bother chasing up blood or urine tests they ordered that were not done
  • getting hospital infections like CD, novo due to inadequate precautions & hygiene
  • gossiping at the desk while patients are in distress
OP posts:
almostthereagain · 10/03/2014 12:33

Well done mrsF Sadly it's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease, hope he starts feeling better now.
Leapt out of bed to exercise today & finally feel really energised. Have been feeling like I'm sleepwalking since Christmas, awful.
Must be the sunshine, hope you're all having a good day too. Am continuing with my no sugar lent, despite being totally rubbish last week as I feel it will be a good discipline for me, even though it's taken me a little easing intoGrin Having a 'light' day today, plan to fast tomorrow.
Happy fasting!

MrsFlorrick · 10/03/2014 12:45

I'm more than a squaky wheel! Grin

DH has has now also phoned them and spoken to the surgeon and the ward consultant will be phoning him at 3pm. DH does measured calm anger. I'm the temperamental moany witch (nag nag nag. Wink)

At least they are now firmly on the ball.

DH still hasn't had a full account as to what is going on with the infections. I can obv the understand the stoma bag issue (cousin had one from teenager and it was easily infected). The surgical wound infection is another matter and why nothing other than oral ABs were done.

FabBakerGirl · 10/03/2014 12:46

Hi everyone

You all sound like you are doing so well.

I have been too poorly to keep up with the thread but wanted to say well done to MrsF for supporting your PIL and DH. You need to have words with your DH though as he should be doing the sorting out but at least he is going up to Scotland.

not2BeObvious - would you like to like soup? I make amazing ones if you want a recipe.

I am down to 11 stone 3lbs after 3 fast days (2 planned, 1 not after food poisoning) but tbh I would rather have been well and put weight on. Still not 100% and everything is catching up with me and I have been tearful. I hate the hire car, I don't feel safe in it and still don't know when I will get my car back.

In other news, I have made cheese and potato pie and pineapple muffins, I have a lovely new bird table with house in the garden and I love volunteering at school.

zedzedzed · 10/03/2014 12:52

God mrs F that's feckin appalling.

We are both hugely fortunate to have any NHS left, and hugely cursed by the spotty nature of care, especially for the elderly...having said that my brother wasn't old when the hospital almost killed him with their neglect and malpractice.

(infections galore, wrong dose of insulin, basic hygiene horrors and unnecessary pneumonia from not being raised in bed, plus terrible frightening misinformation from juniors)

Having said that, in the ICU he got top notch one-on-one care from wonderful and dedicated professionals (after the open ward almost killed him).

Thank God you have the Scando balls to kick ass...I always have to kick ass at my GPs, midwife's with both my births; you have to or you end up ignored/dead/railroaded. Well done you, it must be knackering though. Have some Brew and a big bunch of Thanks

Hope your FD goes well and you get a kip.

I have managed to get through toddler lunch without eating either kid...did inhale a slice of ham though...just their dinner to get through now and then it'll be my mammoth salad time (crumbled blue cheese, some chorizo, fennel seeds, toasted pine nuts, red onion, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, chilli flakes, balsamic glaze, olive oil and a small poached egg on top; 459cals).

womblesofwestminster · 10/03/2014 13:00

I am eyeing up the guinea pigs hay cookies

Been there. Done that Grin

Do you have boy guineas or girl guineas? I love guineas _

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 10/03/2014 13:01

Checking in for a FD today.

Had Chinese hotpot last night so definitely in need. I am starting to get my head around skipping breakfast. I decided to skip it on Saturday's NFD as I was going out for lunch, and actually I felt quite good about it, because my body was getting a 20 hour fast, which could have some benefits. I then applied this to this morning, skipping my usual grapefruit, thinking instead about having a good 15 hour fast, which my body would enjoy.

Looking forward to my skinny soup with tofu this evening Smile well done fellow FDers, have a good tea-drinking afternoon.

TalkinPeace · 10/03/2014 13:19

Had planned to fast today but tummy rumbling stupidly so I had a small bowl of salad for lunch and will have a very light supper

(lunch was small cereal bowl, half filled with shredded lettuce, then an avocado, three pepadew chillis chopped, a tablespoon of chopped leftover chicken and then balsamic vinegar .... being crunch and spicy it took a while to eat so I'm now stuffed for several hours)

((((((( MrsFlorrick )))))
the "up in a sheet of flame" approach is often effective with medics
especially when you can switch it off and chat to the kids and then switch it back on ... then they realise they are dealing with people with a temper, but brains.
Get DH to be growly hard man and you be BOOM hard woman and his dad will get better treatment

Megrim · 10/03/2014 13:21

not2BeObvious good homemade soup is nothing like the stuff that comes in tins. I do a great one made from leftover veg from the roast - roast potato, parsnip, carrot and butternut squash (although I haven't worked out the calories on that one - probably best for a NFD).

Octopus37 · 10/03/2014 13:55

Doing ok today on the FS. Asda chicken noodle soup for lunch, just over 200 cals. Will have similar for tea and maybe enough cals left for an ice lolly. Having an absolute shit day today as I have work worries, however have lost another pound. Now three pounds down since I started, five pounds to go. Hoping to reach my half way point next week. I know the struggle will be maintaining it, am thinking maybe one fast day a week as maintenance.

JoJoMojito · 10/03/2014 13:59

Hello all. I have been doing daily 16:8 for 3 weeks & have been reading this thread with interest. It's time to de-lurk!

I don't think that I can do a "proper" fast at the moment but 16:8 fits in well with my life and, combined with a weekly 3000 cal deficit, I am losing 1lb a week. I am already in healthy BMI range but have some abdominal fat to lose. I am actually nearly at my original target weight of 9 st 7lb but have revised to 9st as I still have a pot belly!

Height 5'7" (small frame)
Start weight : 10 st 4lb (BMI 22.6) - 7lb lost through regular cal counting before stalling then starting 16:8

Current weight : 9 st 8lb (BMI 21)
Target weight : 9 stone (BMI 19.7)

Exercise

I run 4-5 miles x 2 per week plus a shorter run with intervals

Weights session twice a week after longer runs - 3 sets of deadlifts, stiff leg deadlifts, bent over rows, military press, front squats, back squats, press ups, plank

I understand that daily 16:8 in itself doesn't cause weight loss (it's just one way of making a calorie deficit more achievable) but I hope that the health benefits of fasting i.e. insulin metabolism etc still occur - is this right?

I do enjoy reading all your posts & I'm hoping to join you in doing a proper FD soon!

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2014 14:23

Welcome, JoJo
Yes, the health benefits from fasting start after about 12 hours, especially as you exercise a lot, which seems to complement fasting.

You do a really good mix of cardio and serious lifting.
A special welcome to another woman who likes press-ups and squats.
Smile
With a 3000 cal weekly deficit, just as on 5:2, you should theoretically have an average weekly loss of 1lb.

However, this may slow, because as you have a low BMI and are near to your goal weight.

Nearly all women have problems blasting the stubborn final few abs pounds / last waist inch . Try to minimise added sugar for this.

Do you do fasted training, especially HIIT ? That is very good for accelerating fat-burning.

Hi NotHolden hmm... I tend to stop my visualisation at the amazingness of eating the item rather than the after effects Hmm I should try your way! At the moment I'm going for just not having it in the house- just have to hope that my cravings don't turn their attention elsewhere!

Wombles I'd never thought about it as a cultural weekend = relaxing thing but I wonder if it is... I'm off work, off regular gym/exercise sessions that I have to attend and off 'dieting'. Need to keep a bit more control.

MrsF sometimes a robust approach is needed, sounds like your intervention was necessary and effective, I hope you FIL starts to make a better recovery soon.

JoJo welcome - sounds like you have things pretty well worked out already Smile

To all those I've missed - good luck with the Monday fasts! I'm nearly through mine and off to bed. A small NSV when DP discovered he'd need the car at lunchtime to get to an emergency dental appointment, meant I wouldn't be able to get home for soup as planned. Instead of using this as an excuse to have to eat at the work canteen I took an apple, drank loads of tea and made it to dinner on that :-)

Now wondering if I should try to make this week 4:3 to get over the weekend, problem is my only days available are really tomorrow and Thursday and I'm not sure I could hack 2 days in a row...
