Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

I don't appear to be bcf - skipped breakfast due to anxiety but hunger swooped in with the relief.

However, I'm trying to eat mindfully and not just get sucked into eating because I can.

I've had lunch but I am really craving a cheese omelette so I'm going to go for it.

OP posts:
Not2bObvious · 17/02/2014 15:00

Finished my work thingy and despite having a big breakfast, small lunch, I reckon I'm only about 1000 into my tdee. If I still feel alive after my flight home, I might do a jog tonight, feel very sluggish after a weekend of relative excess. Trousers a bit snugSad Fast day tomorrow, gots to make it a good 'un. Can't wait to get home, up since 4.45am and a bit tired now. I'm nearly looking forward to a jog cause my bottoms will be stretchy!

MrsFlorrick · 17/02/2014 16:12

((((Bigchoc)))) Thanks. You've made me feel better.

Now that Bigchoc has told me not to fast. Oh well I'm waaaaay to scared to Wink

Just had DD back to the GP. The penicillin we had has caused a bit of thrush so got some cream for her.
It was obvious what it was but I didn't want to use my cream in case it's different for small DC. It isn't Hmm. So I've just wasted a load of NHS time. Blush
GP wasn't bothered and just gave us more cream.

At least the maritime museum and extortionate sandwich lunch was a massive hit with the DC. They are now so tired, they're not even squabbling. Grin Result.

Betsy. Hope all is well with your DS still (worried).

BetsyBell · 17/02/2014 16:16

MrsF - I did a 'phew, was barking up the wrong tree' post earlier :) He needed some minor treatment only so all is well.

Glad you've had a good day!

Mazzle. Zaggora pants eh and these help the wobbly bits??!!

Where do I get some and how much??

Need to sort out bum, tum and upper thighs on the wobbly cellulite front. And miracles are welcome!

KateBeckett · 17/02/2014 16:24

Oh god I am struggling right now :( just eaten a 28 calorie light cheese triangle. Food has never tasted so good!

MrsFlorrick · 17/02/2014 16:55

Kate. Drink a hot drink. Pref something "meaty" like bovril or miso or a cup a soup. It will keep you going.

Failing that try peppermint or mint tea.

You can do it (says the woman who failed by midday Hmm)

Megrim · 17/02/2014 17:32

Zaggora pants - from the reviews on Amazon the material is a bit like a wet suit and is designed to make you all sweaty, would wrapping yourself in cling film have the same effect?

TalkinPeace · 17/02/2014 17:43

fast over
carton of covent garden pea ham and leek soup bulked up with leftover peas, topped up with a bit of stilton and then two slices of toasted brioche and then a banana for pud.
Stuffed till tomorrow lunch.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/02/2014 17:44

Cons to Waste Your Money
Clothes or bandages that claim to actually make you lose fat (as distinct from corsets which just squeeze in all the bulges).

When your flesh is compressed, it is temporary, at most a few hours. You do NOT lose fat.
When you sweat, you lose water, salt and a few other chemicals. Again, you do NOT lose fat.
Some wrestlers in the USA died while training in rubber suits designed to make them sweat more. Save rubber suits for your S & M nights - then you might burn fat Smile

MrsFlorrick · 17/02/2014 17:50

Bigchoc. Ever the voice of reason Grin

I just wanted to think there was a miracle.

It was turning 40 last year that did it. I suddenly developed cellulite. Never had it before not even when I was at my fattest after DD or DS. But turning 40! Oh yes cellulite. Hmm

Had dinner. Still decking hungry. Confused What's wrong with me this week.

Almond butter might do the trick. As long as I don't eat the whole jar....

TwittyMcTwitterson · 17/02/2014 18:33

If you never had cellulite til you were 40 then you're extremely lucky and I now hate you I'm 26 and I've been riddled with it for years. My bf has sex with me and then throws up

I've done my eating for the day.
Cereal
Banana
Chicken breast
Two oatmeal bar things
Little lolly
Gammon steak
Salad
One finger of kit Kat.

No where near 500 calories but still an excellent day for my fat self!

KateBeckett, you're my hero and make me look bad!

TalkinPeace · 17/02/2014 19:49

cellulite is genetic
I do not have it, nor do any of my family

beanandspud · 17/02/2014 20:08

Hello! 5:2 newbie here. Can I join you?

Just completed my first fast day today and it wasn't (quite) as bad as I expected.

Had two clementines at breakfast, blackberries and FF yogurt at lunchtime and then cauliflower soup for dinner. Have saved 50 calories for later.

Does that sound about right? I read somewhere that missing breakfast is a good idea to achieve a 16hr fast period but wasn't sure that I could last until lunchtime.

Luckily DH is away so have been able to do it without worrying about cooking for him and my next fast day will be Wednesday when he is away again. What do you all do with families? Do you just let them fend for themselves on a FD?

I think I need to start going through all the threads on here for hints and tips...

pandarific · 17/02/2014 20:40

Hi all, thanks for talking me out of murdering the BF the other night - the tagine was late, but worth it!

I am happy today as I can see it working! I can! Going to fast wednesday and friday this week.

Talkinpeace - mmm, covent garden soups are delicious. Good choice!

TalkinPeace · 17/02/2014 20:45

Welcome beanandspud
yup, read the tips and hints, inspirations, recipes and welcome threads
then you'll know what we are on about

pandarific
glad it was yummy .... fasting gets easier
and yes, vegetable soups and stews and stir fries let you get full to bursting within 400 calories

KateBeckett · 17/02/2014 20:48

So, I'm currently slurping on a hot choc made with water. It's not great, but I'm savouring it all the same!
Didn't do too badly in the end, have finished on just under 700 calories.

Evees that's still pretty impressive, especially with your dramatic start to the day :)

I am sooooo looking forward to tomorrow morning!

EagleRay · 17/02/2014 21:39

Hi - may I join you? I had always dismissed the 5:2 with horror but had a bit of a moment at the weekend where I wondered if it might be the answer...

I had DD a year ago and back in October last year I got back to my pre-preg weight of 80kg, and there it has stuck! Was this weight for quite a while before that, and just couldn't shift any of it. It's like my metabolism works like buggery to re-set itself Hmm Was never that small, but since diagnosis of pituitary disease about 4 years ago, my weight has crept up and up.

Here are my stats

Height - 5' 5"
Weight - 80kg
Target - hmm 65kg would be amazing, but if I could shift the first 5kg by Easter then I would be delighted and know I'm doing the right thing. Not a huge target, but at the moment nothing bloody works!

I've got a few challenges though:

  • currently deskbound 5 days a week in 9-5 job
  • DP not terribly supportive but 'luckily' he works away most of the week and I can do FDs when he's not here
  • still BF DD, but only morning and eves so don't think I need to make too many adjustments for that

Exercise-wise, I started weight training with a personal trainer a couple of months ago - can't get to do it very often, but am making progress and try and work out at home when I can - interval training on bike in lounge then throw a few weights around for 15 mins.

Not sure what will happen on NFDs, but I have a bit of a set routine on weekdays and as long as I don't increase it too much from that, then it should be ok

The frame size weight calculator was interesting as I came out large-framed and ideal weight just under 10st. I got down to this weight about 8/9 years ago and was pretty slim, but then it went up again!

First FD tomorrow - tomato and lentil soup bubbling away on the stove (250 cals) then plan to have a stir fry and quorn steak in the evening. I may not get it exactly right in the first week but if I can get it 80% right and not eat any of my colleagues then I'll be happy Smile

TwittyMcTwitterson · 17/02/2014 21:43

If it's genetic does that mean I can never get rid? I think it's disgusting!

What's the next day you are fasting kate? I'm thinking Thursday! What do you normally put in your hot choc??? I always put water in Hmm

TalkinPeace · 17/02/2014 21:44

eagleray welcome.
You are the same height as Eatriskier and myself
you'll be fine.

MazzleDazzle · 17/02/2014 22:33

And here's me thinking my magic pants were going to perform miracles! Trust the resident scientist to burst my bubble...ah well, never mind.

What about 'Secret Diet Drops'? Could they be the answer?

I'M KIDDING!

BigChocFrenzy · 17/02/2014 22:35

Welcome, EagleRay If you are still BFing, you can start at 1000 cal FDs and come down gradually to 700 cals. On NFDs, eat your TDEE.

5:2 works for most folk, once you manage the first few FDs Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 17/02/2014 22:48

There are countless magic pills, raspberry ketones, acai berries, fat burners, smelly wraps, rubber suits and other snake oils peddled for weight-loss and / or cellulite.

Guess what: the only weight loss is in your wallet

Also, NO magic superfood burns more calories than it contains.

Still, if you eat grapefruit, cucumber, cabbage, most other fruit and veg, they are healthy and leave less room in the tum for crap.

Do avoid pills that claim to block fat absorption: they often lead to faecal incontinence and other health problems.

There is no safe quick fix that is sustainable

MazzleDazzle · 17/02/2014 23:13

Faecal incontinence Shock Eek!

Welcome EagleRay! Have you worked out your TDEE? I didn't lose weight until I calorie counted on my NFD. I have tried every diet known to man and this, by far, is the healthiest and easiest to stick to. It's not a diet, it's a WOL! Even on the weeks I don't lose weight, I take comfort in the fact that my health is benefitting. I haven't told many people I'm following 5:2 and though plenty people have noticed I'm thinner, nobody's noticed that my eating habits have changed, so your DH may be none the wiser Good luck!

headintheclouds · 18/02/2014 00:05

Not been posting for a while and have taken my eye off the ball!
still fasting but definitely have gone over my TDEE on NFDs..so no surprise that my latest weight is 10 st 4 !! ( 9 st 12 before Xmas ..close to goal)
i Know what to do..I just need to do it! Kick me up the bum someone ....I'm enjoying wine a little too much as well..and not exercising ..oh shit
