The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon Are you doing ADF or HIIT or both?

I think I read somewhere that ADF interferes with the LH hormone. Confused

Oxtailchambermaid 10lbs! Wow! That'll be two dress sizes!

BetsyBell · 28/02/2014 15:58

Hugs to you PPC

Well done losers!

Here's something I'm DEFINITELY going to be trying as part of my weekend sod-the-calories Interesting Baking (in that I like to bake something nice/different/new at the weekend) Bread pudding with salted caramel

Just thought I'd share! Apologies to any Friday fasters - but hey - you can have it tomorrow right? Grin

bssh at least I'm not the only freak in town Wink

womblesofwestminster · 28/02/2014 17:03

Just binged again. Feel semi guilty. Exhausted but don't know why.

BetsyBell · 28/02/2014 17:17

bssh Eat I bet never even in your wildest dreams did either of you think you'd be having these problems or even uttering those words "I can't stop losing weight" a couple of years ago! Absolutely amazing Grin

I was looking at a photo of when my cats were kittens from 2.5 years ago and I couldn't believe how fat my hand and wrist looked (only bit of me in the picture) "but I have bony elegant hands and tiny wrists!" I thought. We've come a long way.

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 28/02/2014 17:51

Betsy that's so true! But I do wonder if it's because Eat and I have rarely been on diets before (correct me if I'm wrong Eat) that our metabolisms are quite strong hence the rapid and continued success...

ErrolTheDragon · 28/02/2014 17:54

Wombles - exhausted and not knowing why can be so many things...coming down with a virus or low iron or (etc). Be kind to yourself - try to get plenty of sleep over the weekend (sorry, not sure if you have DC/DP etc who may help or hinder that) and try to eat some nutritious food. If you still feel exhausted make sure you discuss it at your GP visit.

Eatriskier · 28/02/2014 18:13

Betsy I never thought that ever! Bssh you may be right, the only thing I tried before was low GI which was more of switching to a more healthier lifestyle than anything more traditionally diet related.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/02/2014 18:17

Postman (({BIG chocolatey hugs})) to you and your DS.

I do hope he recovers very quickly, so you can enjoy pampering him at home.

MrsF A whole month !! Shock

You may hide, but I'll hunt you down.
-Give me a quick 3 sets of 20 press-ups
-Get that porridge arse squatting low before I kick it !

^^ !!!

BigChocFrenzy · 28/02/2014 18:32

Wombles Fasting is a good stress for the body, but only in moderation and also if there is no other major stress going on.

You are doing ADF, which is very tough on your bod, compared to 5:2.
You've also sounded really upset sometimes, so there may also be psychological stress in your life.

Some lifting sites reported that combining ADF with intense exercise caused problems with both exhaustion and periods for some women, especially those who already had irregular periods or other stress.

I would advise returning to 5:2 for 2 weeks and see how you feel. Losing weight should be a healthy patient process, not a race.
After you feel 100% again, if you really find the weight loss on 5:2 is slow for your bod, then you could try alternating 1 week ADF with 1 week 5:2.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/02/2014 18:41

Oxtail Well done on a good 2 months.
I find it best to only try to fix one thing - in your case, weight - at a time. Many of us have continued with diet drink crap - we've postponed dealing with that issue until the sun comes out, or the snow, or ....

Badger No weight loss for the last 2 weeks ?
Hmm Have you logged absolutely all your cals on NFDs, to check you are not eating back the FD deficit ?

batfuttocks · 28/02/2014 19:10

Wombles, I'd second the suggestion to do 5:2. ADF sounds like you are punishing yourself, and its triggering you to binge. Fasts shouldn't be used to undo binges: your body probably can't manage such frequent fasting and the desire to eat on your nfd is overwhelming you. Honestly,5:2 with a couple of days between fasts should take the frenzy away, because you can eat tomorrow. And tomorrow. It's adf you get 24 hours to cram it in, then its back to deprivation again.
Be kind to yourself. Nourish yourself, then your body will cope with the fasts better.

DottiestDoris · 28/02/2014 19:28

Dorises /Dorisi rule!

akarucker · 28/02/2014 20:13

wombles I haven't gone back to read all your posts, but from what I gather, you're on ADF and struggling? I was on ADF for months. I burned out, so stopped fasting for six months, and now I'm back....TWO STONE heavier! I'm now back doing 5:2 don't plan to ever do ADF again, unless it's for the odd week post holiday etc. Anyway, my advice is get off ADF straight away. IMO it actually encourages binging.

bvb I saw that recipe all over my Facebook feeds today so must be hitting the circuit. Let me know if it's as good as it looks and that could be next weekend's indulgence for me!

A good second FD but had forgotten how cold it makes me. Brrrrr....

MrsFlorrick · 28/02/2014 21:08

Bigchoc. (Wibble) Grin
In my defence I have been ill 3 weeks out of the last 4 and in bed for 10 days of that.

And today I spent a full 8 hours cleaning. I washed down all the wood panelling in the lounge (lounge is 32ft x 20ft - panelling is floor to head height and full height around all the 6 windows).
I also washed 26 large sash windows.
And cleaned 19 cast iron radiators
Along with general dusting, hoovering and washing of floors and bathroom kitchen etc.

In fact it was quite a work out. I'm sore all over now.

Oh and I did 8 loads of washing plus drying and folding. And obv got DC up, dressed, fed to school, home again, fed (cooked and washed up) and bathed them and put them in bed.

So sadly Bigchoc. I can't do any of your push ups or squats or a JM session this evening.

However I will do Jillian Michaels tomorrow I promise!! DH has just finally made an appearance and he is most definitely looking after DC tomorrow!!
Plus with no DC and a clean house, I've nothing else to do tomorrow but work out Wink
(Musters last burst of energy to run from Bigchoc)

Tiredemma · 28/02/2014 21:09

WE had some bad news re FIL today so I broke my fast (only slightly) at tea time by sharing same meal as DP- just couldnt face cooking another separate meal for me whilst juggling phonecalls etc.

Came in at 850 cals.

Eatriskier · 28/02/2014 21:11

MrsF If I achieve half that over a full weekend I consider it a mega over achievement Grin

Eatriskier · 28/02/2014 21:11

tired sorry to hear about the bad news. In the circumstances I would consider that a complete success and don't think any more of it. Flowers to you and your family

MrsFlorrick · 28/02/2014 21:30

Tired. ((((Hugs)))). It's so hard when family are ill. And stressful.
I hope your FIL improves soon.
We're all here for handholding.

Eatriskier. Grin I am one of those all or nothing types. And today it was all! Think I must have burnt over 1000 cals cleaning today. Grin
So I'm quickly topping myself up with choc. Wink

Tiredemma · 28/02/2014 21:36

Thanks all- he has had a cerebral aneurism - unsure yet if its actually ruptured so awaiting more news.

hopefulgum · 28/02/2014 22:08

MrsF, I am so Jelly Envy of your cleaning frenzy. I wish I could muster up the energy to do a big clean of my house. I am starting to think it might be a good idea to get a cleaning lady. However, my first goal is to pay off the credit card. It's taking so much longer than I expected Hmm We went on a family holiday to Bali last July and I still haven't got the card down to zero! I am the poster girl for how not to manage finances....

A little disappointed with my weigh in this week, but trying to remember that it can jump around and not to take the number too seriously. Last week I did one fast day and managed to stay the same weight as the week before. This week, I fasted twice, added exercise, and weighed in higher. Angry I have to admit I wasn't logging calories on NFD's. I hope that isn't why I am heavier this week. I honestly don't feel I have the time to keep logging every NFD. If I do, I will feel I am permanantly on a diet, and that isn't what I wanted.

It is a dilemma, because I also don't want to stay this weight, and had planned to have a continuous loss til I got to goal weight. I wasn't really anticipating the "one step back" approach. I will try not to be discouraged. I really want to have the health benefits of fasting.

TiredEmma, sorry about the bad news. I hope they can help your FIL.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/02/2014 22:29

TiredEmma (({big hugs})) Such an anxious time for you. You did very well to manage 850 cals in the circs.

Hopeful I know logging cals on NFDs is a pain, but over-eating on NFDs it is nearly always the reason why people have slow / no weight loss on 5:2. Most people became overweight because they can't judge the portions their body needs.

For say one week, just log everything, to get an idea of how much you eat.
I suspect you eat a bot too much of the delicious food you cook.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/02/2014 22:31

Typo: eat a bit too much - although a bot too much is appropriate !

BigChocFrenzy · 28/02/2014 22:35

Noted: Tomorrow night, expect a full JM report from MrsF with # of press-ups, squats, situps, planks.

DorisAllTheDay · 28/02/2014 22:49

Garn, I was doing so well this week, two successful FDs and two successful NFDs, but today (NFD) the munchies got the better of me. I was fine up until about 6.00 and about to leave work when I discovered a tin of biscuits left over from a meeting and plonked in the staffroom for anyone to help themselves. I was the last person still in the building, and the inevitable happened. I ate about a dozen of the blighters without so much as thinking about it. Then when I got home I ate the only thing resembling addict food in the house - an entire 350g block of Cathedral City cheddar. So Angry with myself. But on the other hand, at least it didn't end up as a full-blown binge. I didn't go home via Sainsburys (or out again) for a family-sized Galaxy and packet of hot cross buns to round it off. Anyway, tomorrow was due to have been a relaxed day when I was going to allow myself to go up to 500 over TDEE. So I'm going to try to stay within TDEE instead, and Sunday is an FD. Hopefully that will make good the damage and get me back on the path of righteousness.

I'm off to bed now before I can eat anything else. And to dream of how the Dorisi will achieve world domination.
