Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 39 - Chocolate-guzzling is NOT wanking: It should only be done in public! Learn healthy habits with our friendly 5:2 / IF support group

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

run Flowers and to anyone else who suffered with poorly sleeping kids. its one thing I've been very fortunate enough not to suffer with (though they make up for it in the day I assure you Wink)

Well, I screwed myself up this week. The not realising my fitbit was underreporting and some funky maths yesterday means I'm pretty sure there was no calorie overage which I was planning on. And there goes another half pound. Oh well, more chocolates for me tonight then. I'm kind of enjoying this friday is do what you like day!

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 28/02/2014 07:32

Another one here with crappy sleepers atm, DS1 seems to be going through some awful stage of taking ages to settle and then being up every 3 hours or so during the night asking for more milk or if its morning yet...
DS2 still feeding in the night so is up too, am knackered, usually a trigger to reach for junk food.
The other thing that's pissing me off is that the scales are not moving, 2 weeks of being the same weight despite some good fasts and exercise is really demotivating me, what can I do?

akarucker · 28/02/2014 07:33

2nd FD today. Hoping it'll go as smoothly as the first. I'm usually a daily weigher but have decided to only weigh monthly for a few months, to see if it makes a difference to see the big picture rather than the daily changes. It's hard - I had to pack the scales away.

DorisAllTheDay · 28/02/2014 08:25

Here's a nice cup of Brew for anyone who's been up half the night with LOs. I'm full of admiration for you guys who are managing to keep your calorie intake down while sleep deprived.

Good luck today akarucker and all other Friday fasters.

Tiredemma · 28/02/2014 08:46

FD today- out and about most of the day with the baby so hopefully it will be easy.

DottiestDoris · 28/02/2014 09:35

Hello all, happy FridaySmile
I'm another who is battling the children at night and fasting in the day. Fingers crossed, ds1 is no problem but ds2 is going through his 4 month sleep regression and so I'm up with him 5 or 6 times a night. He's growing too and so needs feeding on each occasion, and he's bf so it's taking a toll on me. I've upped my calories on both fd and nfd to compensate and it doesn't seem to have caused a set back as I'm only 1lb off losing a stone since 4th Jan. Only one more stone until target weight.
So good luck to all Friday fasters and tired parents. I'm going to hit the caffeine-Brew for you all too

PrimalLass · 28/02/2014 10:31

Urgh, so glad to be past the sleep deprivation bit.

Should be a FD but am out on the sauce tonight. Will do it tomorrow instead as by the time I get home from my friend's house I can have a biggish late lunch, then am taking DS to a sports thing 4-7 ish, home about 8. So will be eating earlier than usual but it should be OK.

CiderwithBuda · 28/02/2014 10:37

Morning all. A FD here for me today. Just warm water and lemon juice and two cups of tea so far. I am hungry though! Will hold off till around 1.30 though as have gym induction at 2.30. Don't want a rumbling tummy or to feel weak then!

Wombles - i said Id get back to the binge thingie. And coincidentally there was an article about sugar in the Irish Independent this morning - www.independent.ie/lifestyle/i-was-24-stone-i-gave-up-sugar-and-lost-half-my-body-30037509.html here

Not sure that link will work - fingers crossed!

Sugar is a huge issue today. It is in everything. And it is totally addictive. It really is worth researching to help control your binges. Low carb is a really good way to do it. I did Bootcamp and there are lots of people on there dealing with sugar issues. There are quite a few books around at the moment about sugar. Well worth a read. I got one in Sainsburys for around £7 - I Quit Sugar. Some lovely recipes in it and tips for giving up.

Another idea might be to keep a diary - both food and mood to see if you can figure out what triggers a binge.

Some counselling might work - cognitive behavioural therapy as someone else mentioned. Even reading Paul McKenna's book on emotional eating might give you some insight and tips.

I binge too but on wine. Im not an alcoholic (I don't think!) but once i start i find it hard to stop and that leads me to eat crap as well. I could probably put 1500 calories away on top of what i had eaten and drunk that day - sandwiches, toast, cake, biscuits and crisps - and all late at night. DH has been away this week and I haven't had a glass of wine since Sunday night. No withdrawal issues. Not even tempted. But I know if I have one it will be a slippery slope. Am contemplating giving up for Lent which I have never done.

PrimalLass · 28/02/2014 10:52

I'm like that with wine too - has to be dry white though, so am trying to drink red or g&t instead as I don't drink them like juice.

I did manage to only have one large-ish glass of sauv last night. Tracking it on MFP helps.

almostthereagain · 28/02/2014 11:06

not2be I am giving up sugar for lent, I considered alcohol cider but thought I'd rather go without sugar than wine on mothers dayGrin
doris that's a great loss, you must be so pleased to be 1/2 way there!
I am usually not hungry post FD but had porridge 1st thing as was out until just now in the cold & thought I may need it. Have come in & had milky coffee & pain au raisin. Delicious but prob had 1/2 days allowance, it's not yet lunch time & I'm out tonightConfused
Strength to all todays fasters.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/02/2014 11:19

Morning all. 58.8kg this morning, so about a pound more than I was two weeks ago, but given all the eating out last week (which I thoroughly enjoyed, no guilt!) I'm neither surprised or unhappy about this - it's still in the 'healthy' BMI range.

postmanpatscat · 28/02/2014 12:20

Sorry I've been missing this week, I'm usually around cheering you all on. Eldest DC has been in hospital since last Sunday and I've been on the misery diet (mostly involves tea and biscuits and not much else) and some inadvertent fasting due to complete absence of an appetite.

I'm another contemplating giving up sugar or chocolate for Lent. Fear not re Mothers Day though, whatever you give up you can still have on Sundays!

Hope you are all doing well, there is always plenty of support on here.

BsshBossh · 28/02/2014 12:21

Big hugs to you and your family MrsF.

Quick update from me: I haven't fasted for a fortnight because I'm still maintaining below target weight. Fasting works so well for me that even 6:1 or 16:8 has me losing weight; plus the appetite-suppression of fasting has obviously kicked in so overeating is no longer normal. Like Eatriskier I'm having to make sure everything I eat is full-fat. I used to be 210 lbs! I can't believe how effective 5:2 has been for me! Keep at it everyone. It really works if you give it time and it will change the way you eat.

BsshBossh · 28/02/2014 12:22

postman oh no! How is your DS now?

MrsFlorrick · 28/02/2014 12:41

Postman!!! Shock Poor you and your DS!!! Is he any better yet?
Wishing him a speedy recovery ((((hugs))))

Bssh. Thanks. Smile FIL is sitting up and off all monitors and IVs. He is still on morphine and quite weak and in pain which isn't surprising. DH is visiting the hospital with MIL just now. And then he is heading back down to London.

Cleaning house just now. Hoping to burn some calories.
It's been an appalling week food wise.
I've not managed a single FD. I almost managed one yesterday. Until I ate a load of choc truffles at 10pm! Confused Otherwise I would have done it. ConfusedConfusedSad

Oh well at least across my week I am within TDeE and have not gained weight. So that's ok given that I am supposed to be maintaining.

Looking to do a proper FD Sunday with LOF until dinner time.

Also hoping to shrug off some tiredness so that I can get back to working out. I've had an entire month without ANY exercise (hides from Bigchoc).

Oxtailchambermaid · 28/02/2014 12:47

Lurker here popping into say hello and a big thank you to you all Thanks. I'm 2 months in now and have lost 10lbs! So chuffed, this is the first time in my 40 years on planet earth that I've actually dieted for longer than a few days. I tend to spend my FDs reading this thread, it's such a support.
I'm still waiting on this mythical appetite suppression to kick in on the NFDs, and I know I've got other things I need to fix like drinking 2 cans of diet coke on my FDs, but for now happy to plod on. Happy weekend all!

almostthereagain · 28/02/2014 13:11

postman hope he's back on the road to recovery now, what a horrid week.

BshEnvy at you still losing! As soon as I miss a couple of fast days I put on 3lbs! Really hoping to get some advice from those of you on low TDEEs as to how you shift the last 7 lbs & stay there. I've lost almost a stone & half but have struggled with the last bit for over a year. If I really focus I get down a couple lbs but if I 'live a little' & eat a fraction over weekly Tdee I'm stuffed!

mrs F I admire your strength at a sunday fast proposal when your dh has been away I'd be battening down the hatches with roast lunch, wine & fire, therin lies my problemGrin Hope you have a good w/e & that your family is bearing up at this tough time.

Well done oxtail you can support some newbies now & inspire us allSmile

AngieM2 · 28/02/2014 13:42

Successful FD yesterday thanks to the support I had on here. Thank you all so much. Lost 2lb this morning but not technically a loss as I gained 2lb at half term week. So back to my 14 year low weight, really hoping for another loss next week. 3 NFD's now, yippee!

TalkinPeace · 28/02/2014 14:03

Oxtailchambermaid
WElcome and glad ts working for you : tell us a bit about yourself.

postman HUGE hugs to you and your DS : stuff fasting - go for high fat and protein comfort foods to keep your energy levels up

womblesofwestminster · 28/02/2014 14:19

Guys, does ADF and/or HIIT mess up your periods?

I still haven't came on, despite being due a week ago and having all the cramps, mood swings, cravings, acne (I'm 100% not pregnant). What do you think is going on?

I've booked an appointment to see my GP on Tuesday.

Oxtailchambermaid · 28/02/2014 14:31

Yay! Didn't think about supporting newbies?!! Blimey. Hope so.

I'm a single Mum to 2 year old twins, work full time and once I've lost another 2 lbs I'll be the slimmest I've been in 20 years! Smile Once I got past the first week I find FDs relatively easy (did I really just type that?), although I tend to think I'm invincible on the day after FDs so hope to rein that in.

postman take care of you and yours - hope your DC is on the mend.

TalkinPeace · 28/02/2014 14:33

wombles I'm no help as I'm a bit old for such things ! Are you drinking PLENTY OF WATER

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 28/02/2014 14:38

Womble if it does, it may well explain the 2 periods in 3 weeks I've just had?!

MazzleDazzle · 28/02/2014 14:41

Brew for those up through the night with DC and Thanks to Mrs F and postman and any one else with poorly family members.

Welcome to all the newbies and delurkers. Oxtail, I'm the same. Reading this thread keeps me on track and gives me inspiration!

Well, I have a NSV and a SV to report! However, DH has just called so I have to scoot off. Will fill you in later!

DorisAllTheDay · 28/02/2014 15:05

Come back, Mazzle! You can't tantalise us like that and disappear! I want news of victories please. I've got the munchies again, and I need some inspiration to keep me going.

Oxtail, great stuff getting to your lightest for 20 years. Definitely worth a non-calorific celebration.

MrsF, it sounds like your FiL is making progress if he's off the monitors. I do hope so. How much longer is your partner planning to be with him? I think you should be kind to yourself and not expect too much in the way of weight loss - the emotional and practical demands on you must be huge at the moment, and you don't need the additional strain of feeling bad about what you eat. Given everything that's happening you've done terrifically well to stay overall within TDEE.

Sorry to hear about your DC, postman.
