The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

MrsF Your home body fat scales are obviously wonky - 45% !! No way !

Those at the gym are no more accurate than the BF calculator I gave, so +/- 3%. Some gyms also measure with callipers, but that takes skill.

Someone who is at the upper limit of healthy BMI for their frame is quite likely to have 30% BF, unless they are an intense exerciser, with lots of muscle.

DorisAllTheDay · 19/02/2014 14:57

Badger, sorry to hear you had a bad day. I had almost an entire bad week last week, and it might have turned into a lot longer without this lovely thread and the even lovelier people on it. I agree with Boleh - treat it as a fresh start. And I had a good moment on the scales today. Having put on 9lb during my binge (taking me to 10 st 4) I weighed myself this morning after a few days around TDEE and yesterday's successful FD. 9 st 11 - so all the 'bloat' has gone quite quickly. I suspect the remaining 2 lb (I was 9 st 9 before my blowout) is real weight gain which will take much longer to lose, but if I hadn't restarted 5:2ing I would probably have been knocking on the door of 11 stone by now. I found it was helpful to have a few days on TDEE before trying an FD (as I thought I might sabotage myself and end up feeling like a failure which is guaranteed to get me reaching for the cake) but that might not work for everyone. Somebody said yesterday to imagine yourself wearing nice clothes in the summer. That works for me too.

NSV just now. I thought 'what the heck, I need chocolate' so I went to one of the hundreds of newsagents damn them to hell near where I work. Twixes were on offer, 2 for a pound. My hand was actually on the Twixes. I don't know about anyone else, but for me, part of the high-carb experience is buying the stuff and fantasising about how good it's going to be to eat it. So I stood in the newsagents, Twixes in hand, and made myself fantasise about a nice cup of tea instead. And then I put the chocolate back where it belonged and walked out of the shop. I'm now sitting at my desk enjoying my cup of tea and feeling unutterably smug.

flipflopper · 19/02/2014 15:05

Thankyou bigchocfrenzy. I had a pear and a pint of water, feel a bit better now. Think I will last til tea time now!
I managed ok last week fasting til tea time, but it's not happening this week!

BigChocFrenzy · 19/02/2014 15:22

Doris Excellent NSV. Very well done with the Twix.
That was real self-discpline, resisting temporary pleasure because you know with chox: "through the lips, straight to the hips"

postmanpatscat · 19/02/2014 15:25

doris that's a great achievement! I bet the shopkeeper was might p*ed off though.

SunnySideOptimist · 19/02/2014 15:57

Thanks, BigChoc, Postman, Bssh and batfuttocks and everyone else... just reading through the posts was helpful and a reminder to just stick with it. I also did some reading about the difference between scale weight and tape measure weight, so I think I'll relax about the scales. Smile

Doris, well done rejiggering your fantasy! "They" always say to do it but it's not easy, is it? Smile

TalkinPeace · 19/02/2014 16:01

having to eat carefully this week because half term and a big set of accounts to do has stuffed up gym time

batfuttocks · 19/02/2014 16:37

Loving the twix denial: sometimes it is so so hard to walk away. Well done!

Flip: I was faltering around five yesterday (fd) and watched the eat fast live documentary on Vimeo which helped massively to remind me why I am doing this.

TurnipHead Yup, she's been very slim ever since. Lots of pix in the media, e.g. on this nice little earner Mimi

Not2bObvious · 19/02/2014 18:43

Great news Doris, both an sv and an nsv! I loves twixs, I have to nearly put a bag over my head if I get within 10 feet of them! You must be thrilled to only have a real gain of 2 after such a fright at the scales.
Nfd today but decided to attempt as close to a mini fast as I can since my weekend was so eatey. Managed til 1'ish to break my fast, ok I had McD's BUT I only ate a little over half my burger, left a third of my fries. The minute I was satisfied that I'd had enough, I legged it to the bin and chucked my remainsGrin Big success for me, I would normally feel guilty for eating McD's but honestly it's about a once a month if even occurrence, and the fact I only ate about 600 cals of a potential 900 cal meal, that's good I reckon. FD tomorrow, off with the kids so that could be tough but hopefully I'll get an exercise session and some spring cleaning done in the morning, after a snooze of they let me! Welcome to newbies again, are we all on an FD together tomorrow?

TwittyMcTwitterson · 19/02/2014 19:02

How do you guys eat your twixs??? I nibble the caramel off the top leaving just the wafer and then eat it. Been told it weird. Wink

Fast day tomorrow. It's also payday. Normally I buy a big fat treat Hmm

wildwater · 19/02/2014 19:07

Thanks to everybody for their concern. A note: the same day my friend died, a baby daughter was born to the child of another good friend. Life goes on. Thanks

womblesofwestminster · 19/02/2014 20:28

Hi guys.

Does anyone here have a problem with binging? I do :( Particularly the night before a fast day. I tell myself I'll have just one chocolate treat and then it's like I lose my mind and go into crazed maniac mode emptying cupboards :( I did this last night. I feel terrible about it.

Emmabryant123 · 19/02/2014 20:33

Womble-
Yep the 'oh well I'm fasting tomorrow so I can eat this pack of choc biscuits'
I suffer from that

forevermore · 19/02/2014 20:53

For those NFD chocoholics. Have you still lost weight (presuming you don't do it all the time)

TalkinPeace · 19/02/2014 21:01

BLEUGH : feeling horrible this evening
Why?
because DS insisted that he and I had Dominos for supper ....
never again : its just sweet and carby and bland and empty and has left me feeling bloated but not in any way sated
give me DH's real pizza or a good salad any day.

How do people eat that stuff week in week out?

BetsyBell · 19/02/2014 21:02

wombles - one way to help with that is to consider your fast starting straight after your evening meal rather than when you wake up the next day. That way you can clock up more fasting hours! eg finish eating by 7pm means you can eat some lunch the next day at 1 and still have had 18 hours worth of complete fasting.

Declaring the kitchen closed after a certain time is a useful thing. None of us really need to be eating after we've had an evening meal and it's a good habit to try and conquer.

OP posts:
Not2bObvious · 19/02/2014 21:04

I think the only solution chocolate/junk munchers, I'm one of them too by the way, you have to cut back on buying the junk. One trip to the shops can fuel many trips to the kitchen. Saying no to yourself once at the shops, saves you battling with your willpower numerous times during the week(Robbed that theory from a reduce childhood obesity campaign in my homeland)
Yes, I have lost weight despite doing this but I've gained it again and the behaviours severely hampering my weightloss over time. Working hard to be more mindful of the behaviour. Battled weight for years, not going to completely solve it in months - but this WOL is working better than anything I've ever done before

BetsyBell · 19/02/2014 21:06

Now, just before I posted that I was thinking quite seriously about some of the dark lindt in the cupboard. But now I won't as I am normally very good about not nibbling in the evening and it's good to remind myself of that!

I always feel a lot better in the morning if I haven't eaten anything later in the day.

Also, given that I'm not currently fasting because illness and half term makes it tricky I really do need to NOT get back into random evening nibbling habits! Mindful eating and all that. Grin

OP posts:
womblesofwestminster · 19/02/2014 21:10

you have to cut back on buying the junk

I know :( but DH/DC like it.

Not2bObvious · 19/02/2014 21:17

Only buy enough for them thenGrin

beanandspud · 19/02/2014 21:17

Just managed FD no. 2 so feeling quite pleased with myself Smile.

Didn't have anything apart from black tea/coffee/water until about 4pm when I had some fruit. Vegetable soup for dinner.

I have, however, headed to bed in an attempt to stay away from the kitchen! Have 40cals saved for an Options Hot Chocolate, is that really awful?!?

Not2bObvious · 19/02/2014 21:22

Only half kidding Womble - believe me I know it's not easy, just cause you're trying to cut back doesn't mean everyone else has to suffer but there are ways around it. Don't buy as often, that's for their benefit too, or close the kitchen after dinner, tough but possible - set yourself a challenge, and let yourself have something you fancy, just something not everything in sight (says she who ate a star bar and a double decker one after the other on Sunday Blush)

DorisAllTheDay · 19/02/2014 21:29

Ha, Evees, I eat my twix in the opposite way to you. I nibble the biscuit part first, and then kind of fold the caramel bit up and eat it in a one-er. Usually I do that with the first finger and eat the second finger conventionally. No idea why, but I can't remember ever having done it differently.

Wombles, I am a lifelong binger, it's my downfall. I can't eat one chocolate biscuit - I have to eat the whole packet. Despite that, forevermore, I've gone from a size 22 (back in summer 2012) to a size 12 and I'm now battling very, very hard to lose a few more pounds and stay there. What I'd really like is to spend the next few months losing about 2 or 3 lb a month nice and steadily, till I get to my target which is waist measurement 31" (not sure exactly what that will be in weight, maybe around 9 stone) and then stay there. But it's not as straightforward as that for me, and there have been periodic binges along the way. Since October it's got a lot worse - the binges have been longer and more frantic, which is why I started 5:2 last month, as I thought I needed to try something different. I'm worried that I might now be on a kind of mini-yoyo-diet treadmill.

Having said that, a successful NFD today. I've come in at around TDEE, and not only resisted temptation in the newsagents, but had to go to Sainsburys after work and walked past the bagels (4 for a pound), the special offer KitKats (also 4 for a pound), huge bars of Galaxy at a pound, and hot cross buns at 4 for 60p. There is no way of avoiding these things, as the special offers can be anywhere in the store, not confined to the bakery and confectionery aisles. But I got past them unscathed. Not2Be you're absolutely right, once I've bought it I've good as eaten it, but if it's been left in the shop it can't hurt me.

Another FD tomorrow while things are going well.
