The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

mazzle sounds like slapped cheek to me too. I'd never heard of it until DD got it - I thought the Dr was accusing me of something Shock. At that point I was 8 weeks pregnant with DS and its not a good thing for preggers women to get, so I was tested for antibodies. I was told the vast majority of people have had slapped cheek, as not everyone who suffers shows the red cheek symptoms so it just seems like another unexplained virus. Hope she gets better soon.

Eatriskier · 03/02/2014 20:26

Oh mrsf - missed your post. it sucks you are one of the apparent unlucky few. Flowers for you

MrsFlorrick · 03/02/2014 20:38

Thanks Thanks everyone.

Bigchoc. I assumed I had it as a child. I had absolutely everything else.

The joint pain I am feel is agony. It's gone straight to my SI joints. I actually want to scream. I've taken nurofen plus (codiene one) but I'm still in agony and my hands are going numb. Ugh. I do hope it passes quickly.

DS is still suffering after 4 days but he is better as he was fully able to whine for treats instead of dinner Hmm

Mazzle. I hope you get it too. My throat is like razor blades too and my heads pounding.

Sorry not what you all wanted to hear about. Ugh.

MrsFlorrick · 03/02/2014 20:39

Bssh. Thanks. And congrats on reaching goal Grin what an achievement. Thanks

MrsFlorrick · 03/02/2014 20:40

Eatriskier. Thanks. Head down on pillow and sleep for me.

bishboschone · 03/02/2014 20:41

Ok thanks , I have read the op but have jut confused myself .. I don't know why .. My tdee is 1500.. I get the fast days for 500 each . So if I stick to 1500 the rest of the time I will lose weight , yes? Tia

Mrs F and Mazzle - amazingly well done on sticking to your 5:2 through all the illness (your own and childrens). Such a tough thing to do, I am very impressed.

BigChoc - just read your exercise thread. You're a total legend. Please give me a starter - I run regularly (up to half marathon distance) but I do that as my commute and am otherwise pretty time poor. What is the ONE THING I should start doing to sort out my non existent abs and sparrow arms (preferably not going to a gym)?

Like you, I do a sedentary desk job and my neck and back aches are becoming more frequent.

Thank you

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 21:09

bisch your TDEE is only 1500?

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 21:10

You're using the tool on the OP yes?

TalkinPeace · 03/02/2014 21:14

mine is just over 1500 ....
short people can have a low TDEE ....
Bosch how tall are you ?

bishboschone · 03/02/2014 21:14

Short !! 5 ft

bishboschone · 03/02/2014 21:15

According to that link it's 1500 . Is that a lot or not very much?

BsshBossh · 03/02/2014 21:15

FD over. Managed 23 hours on herb tea and water only. Now to eat my chicken, saffron and olives stew with brown rice. Yum!

BsshBossh · 03/02/2014 21:16

bish 1500 cals sounds about right if you're 5ft. I'm 5ft 4 and my TDEE for moderately active is 2000 cals.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/02/2014 21:31

FD completed :)

Felt great today compared to how I have felt the last couple of times I've fasted. My period has finally finished after almost 20 days Hmm which may have something to do with it, I feel back on an even keel.

Sending Flowers and wishes for a good night's sleep to all the poorly people and their DCs.

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 21:34

So I guess you could do 2x500 FDs, 3x1300 NFDs, 2x1700 weekend NFDs and lose a steady 2.5 pounds a month, which sounds like only a little but as you don't have much to lose and it's a permanent WOE I guess that's pretty good.

My TDEE is massive as I'm a giant and have a LOT to lose!

neverletmego · 03/02/2014 21:35

FD successful, very proud :) it was hard - felt weak all day, but is almost over now.

Is it a problem if I don't want to watch my TDEE on NFD? I mean obviously I wouldn't want to pig out, but then knowing my personality and eating disorder past, I know once I start counting cals regularly, I become obsessive and it never ends well.
The impression I got from the book was that the beauty of 5:2 is that one can lead a normal diet-free, healthy (mentally and phisically) life, so hope it really is that way...

Congrats to all you Monday fasters!

Megrim · 03/02/2014 21:40

Hope the drugs are kicking in for everyone. Slapped Cheek is also known as Fifth Disease as it was (is?) the fifth most common childhood rashes. I'd never heard of it until a few years ago when it was doing the rounds at school.

DorisAllTheDay · 03/02/2014 22:21

Congratulations, Monday fasters.

I had to google slapped cheek. Oh my goodness, it does sound nasty. Thanks to all the poorly people and their DCs. Glad to hear you've gone to bed, MrsF. I do hope you manage to get a good night's sleep and feel slightly better in the morning.

neverletmego, I think you have to do this in a way that works for you. It doesn't sound sensible to me to do it in a way that you know is going to end badly. I would try doing it the way you've suggested, count calories on your FDs but just aim to eat sensibly on NFDs without controlling things too tightly. See how it goes, and if you're not losing after a month or so, think about reviewing your approach to NFDs. There might be other ways of cutting your intake if it turns out to be necessary, without too much potentially obsessive calorie-counting. Oh, and mega-congratulations on your successful FD, it's brilliant that you kept going despite feeling weak.

postmanpatscat · 03/02/2014 22:25

Well done tiger

alibaba I went to the GP in October after a 20 day period, was referred for an ultrasound and found a polyp. I haven't had an abnormal period since, but am having a hysteroscopy in half term. It's worth investigating, the GP did blood tests for thyroid and all sorts of things as well as an internal, STI and pregnancy tests (I'm 45 and have been sterilised so the pregnancy test result was entirely as expected!)

raspberry I often run when fasting, ideally in the morning, which is why I often fast on a weekend (I never run before work, I already leave home at 7.30). I've fasted today and spent 45 mins on the treadmill this evening. Usually I feel fine and can easily manage an hour, even when I haven't eaten all day.

peaberry · 03/02/2014 22:32

Hello! I'm back after a year away. Have missed the support of this group so am really pleased to be back and inspired again.

Today is a FD and though not easy, a good reminder that hunger ebbs and flows and is totally manageable.

Hope you all are well.

positively9something · 03/02/2014 22:32

Evening all!

Well I cancelled my last two fast days as I've had enough! I havnt lost anymore weight since Xmas!

I was wondering if anyone could talk me through 16:8 I ready on another thread that you don't have to calorie count atall, is that correct?

I'm thinking I could do 1.30-9.30 would that work?

I am currently 10.3 stone, 5'2 and tdee is around 1580 calories if sedentary and around 1700 if lightly active.
I want to get down to 9 stone Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 03/02/2014 22:43

HandMini I'm glad you liked our 52 exercise thread. Good to hear you want to increase your exercise.
Smile
A gym makes exercise easier and motivates some people, but you can certainly exercise perfectly well at home.

With all that running - most impressive ! - your leg and bum muscles should be excellent
However, I do recommend runners add some sprint intervals, because it increases your fitness and running performance. HIIT goes well with 5:2.

The most important upper body exercise for you is press-ups,
but not the useless damn girlie ones
The exercise thread details how to do sets of proper ones and I also posted "CrossFit" press-ups and inclined press-ups, which seems to have helped other beginners to progress a lot.

If you have time for additional upper body exercises , you need to buy some dumbbells, preferably a set of different weights for different exercises. If you've never lifted before, start with a pair each of 2, 3 and 5 kg dumbbells.
I suggest rowing, deadlift, neck press, see the OP for video links.

Feel free to post on the Exercise Thread, whenever you have questions or if you just want to share what you have done, running or strength.
Smile

Damn you, Zed. Wink All the way home this evening (I walked most of the 4 miles, only got a bus for the worst mile along the main road) I was singing this little ditty:

Buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea,
My kitchen is closed - there's no bagels for me,
Oh how I long for an N-FD,
Buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea.

Strawberry, strawberry, strawberry pie,
An apple won't crumble and neither will I,
Ask why I'm fasting and I reply,
Strawberry, strawberry, strawberry pie-ie-ie...

Buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea,
I'll drink you tomorrow, just wait and see.
With muffins and toast (up to TDEE),
Buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea.

With acknowledgement and apologies to the incomparable Rowlf. My singing isn't a patch on his.
