The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

I went to six supermarkets before finding butternut tea, at the third Waitrose I went to. I like the smell more than the taste.

grace In a year of doing this I don't remember reading of anyone who's had a blip-free experience. Maybe a week of good old 5:2 with logging in your cals would mean you lose a pound or several?

Good luck today fasters.

HandMini · 03/02/2014 13:29

Bugger, I just ate a massive salad (all green stuff) with two hard boiled eggs in it, and a sploosh of oil and vinegar. Add that to the milk in my tea and I think I've only got 150 or so for dinner tonight. Waaaaah!

ErrolTheDragon · 03/02/2014 13:35

Two eggs and a lot of salad should keep you going for quite a long time though.

If I'm having salad on an FD I dress it with just balsamic vinegar and black pepper - even on nfds I find 1tsp oil is enough with the vinegar.

Dotty342kids · 03/02/2014 13:56

Hello all. Just catching up with you all. Monday fast day has fallen by the wayside due to home made ginger cake. Hmm, need to think which other days this week I can do instead! Smile

One thing I've found about logging with MFP was that it puts me off snacking because I simply CBA to log it! Having no I-things it means a trip upstairs to the office to the computer.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/02/2014 14:30

Hi everyone - so many posts!

MrsF we had awful problems with DS1 withholding poo. Again he was toilet trained and everything was fine, and then he started not wanting to go and do a poo. It was horrendous, because he used to wet also because he was trying so hard to hold the poo in.
We had lots of accidents even the first term he was at school - small amounts escaping around a blockage (TMI) - school were very supportive though and told us that he wasn't the only child in the class with a similar problem.

He's now 5.5 and doing so so so much better. He goes to the toilet at the same time each day - we allow him to have the iPad to encourage him to sit there! As I'm typing this I actually can't remember the last time I had a pair of dirty pants to deal with - some months ago I think. It will sort itself out, but it is utterly draining and exhausting, I really feel for you Flowers

Bssh well done! Grin

I'm on a FD today, liquid only so far. I've got dinner all planned, will be about 460 calls :)

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 14:53

8hrs down, only 4hrs to go.

Coffee-coffee-coffee, tea-tea-tea, twiddle-thumbs-twiddle-feet, twiddle-diddle-dee.

Tomorrow I will eat (a measured amount of) linguine with olive oil, garlic, chilli, fennel and chorizo with parmesan on top and a massive green salad on the side. AND a gooseberry fool for pud.

almostthereagain · 03/02/2014 15:12

Broken my fast with my main meal already so managed 20hrs, got a few cals left for later. Keep going all you rock hard fasters!

raspberrytart · 03/02/2014 15:18

Hello again, can anyone tell me in simple terms why it is good or not good to excercise on fasting days. Will I burn muscle instead of fat? I went for a 10k run this morning and really struggled, didnt have anyting other than a cup of tea or two before.I dont normally eat anyway before a run as I tend to feel very sick.
Any advice will be great- thankyou

neverletmego · 03/02/2014 15:38

happy to see you guys fasting - keeps me motivated.
i'm still suffering from sugar withdrawal, pretty faint and hard to concentrate... luckily work isn't so hard today.

really hope it gets better :)

MorrisZapp · 03/02/2014 15:42

FB group are doing 'no weigh February', putting scales out of reach until the 28th. Anybody up for this?

HandMini · 03/02/2014 15:49

Raspberry - I don't know any of the physiology / fat burning info behind it all, but in terms of what feels good to me:

  • running the morning after a fast day feels great (but I make sure I hydrate loads before I start)
  • running the morning of a fast day means I have no appetite in the morning but then famished at lunch time (not ideal, as I try to eat as little as poss and save my calories for evening)
  • running on a NFD is fine, but I KNOW (although I try not to) that I drink less water on a NFD and therefore dont' rehydrate properly. Too much tasty tea and coffee tempting me.

I honestly think you can have a struggle-run on, or the day after, a NFD and a great run on, or the day after, a FD. It's just the way running goes as opposed to a result of the FD.

I'm up for a no scales Feb. I don't have any scales, so will be easy for me!! Grin

raspberrytart · 03/02/2014 15:53

Thanks HandMini. Im quite new to fasting, but been a runner for a year. Will try to run on NFD for now.

alabasterangel · 03/02/2014 16:00

Reassure me, please. 3rd FD here. I ate at 6pm yesterday, nothing after that and allowing myself 500 cals all day today. I'll stay 'fasting' till breakfast tomorrow, so technically I am going 36 hours on 500 cals. Is that how I should be doing it?

On my fast day I'm def only having 500 cals (example would be today I had clear liquids till 1pm, and one tea with the tiniest dash of milk, a slice of dry wholemeal toast with a poached egg, and then at 6 I'll have a m&s ready meal 290 and rocket, peppers and spring onions. That's it.

Just kind of surprised that I weighed this morning, a week since starting and after 2 FDs and have only lost .5 of a lb overall since starting. Not the best start to a FD for motivation, particularly when I have to admit I'm finding it really tough. Headaches, nauseous and tetchy as hell. On my last fast day last thurs I went to bed at 9 just it stop myself listening to my growling stomach.......

tiggermummy70 · 03/02/2014 16:08

alabaster : how much clear liquid are you drinking? You will probably need to up it especially if your getting headaches.

touching in before my offical weigh in tonight.

didn't loose anything yesterday but was running around clearing garage to make room for last of stuff from mums place and clocked up 6 miles. didn't drink nearly enough. refilled my 23oz bottle 4 times so far and still have dry mouthConfused

going to bathroom constantly but hopefully will reset by tomorrow. .

Wine for NFDers Brew for Fders

frenchfancy · 03/02/2014 16:09

alabaster sounds like you are doing it just right. Lesson no 1: never weigh yourself the morning of a fast day (especially straight after the weekend) The number will be different tomorrow. You will bounce a bit with this but the overall trend will be down. Get the tape measure out or find a pair of too tight trousers and use those instead of the scales for a bit.

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 16:10

alabaster I'm new too, but that sounds ideal.

Have you worked out your TDEE (tool at top of op) and set MFP to sedentary and maintain? Then maybe log ALL calories, just for a week and see if your eating significantly under or over your TDEE on NFDs as both can have an effect I'm told, also stuff like your period can have a big impact.

Lots of people use their measurements onll and don't weigh till the end of a month as it's demotivating to see daily/weekly fluctuations. Also bear in mind you need to lose 3,500 calories from your total weekly TDEE just to lose 1lb of fat.

Hope you get through today, I'm on my 4th week and it's getting much easier. X

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 16:12

*not your, you're...sorry, brain fuzz...need more FD tea!

alabasterangel · 03/02/2014 16:13

Loads and loads and bloody loads of fluid. 2 pints of sugar free lime and fizzy water and another pint of fizzy water, 2 mugs of hot water and lemon. About to have another tea with dash of milk just to stave off my stomach till 6 which sounds like its trying to inwardly digest itself.....

Find it so so hard not to weigh. I love the motivation of seeing even a little gone (but .5 lb is not making me happy!)

alabasterangel · 03/02/2014 16:15

I will get through today, but those around me may bear the scars!!!!

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 16:17

GIVE YOUR SCALES TO A PAL! Maybe just visit them once a week but only if you've done your 2 sub 500 FDs...or once a fortnight if you can wait.

It gets easier, I swear. Stay busy, go for a walk, have a bath, cook for NFDs (sounds crazy but works for me) read this thread, etc etc

You can have it tomorrow alabaster

HandMini · 03/02/2014 16:27

Can someone tell me about this "clear liquids" thing. A lot of people on here refer to drinking only "clear liquids". Why is this better? Does herbal tea count as clear? Squash (even sugar free) - clear or not clear. Am guessing tea, coffee and Diet Coke are NOT clear!

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 16:34

If it has zero or close to zero calories (ie NO milk NO sugar NO bits) then I'd say it's clear. Is that right people?

Check your herbal teas on MFP some have none, some have a few, it shouldn't matter but if I was drinking gallons of them and it came close to 50 cals in total (when something happens to your insulin and you're not in fasting mode...I think) I'd knock that flavour on the head.

I keep emergency diet coke in fridge on FDs...in case I'm DEFINITELY about to eat one of my children, but they're so bad for you...but I reckon whatever gets you through your first few fasts has gotta be better than quitting.

I guess it's what you want to do forever that matters; setting a good pattern for the rest of your life (I don't want to rely on diet drinks forever so keep them for dire emergencies!)

DorisAllTheDay · 03/02/2014 17:23

Zed, I don't know whether it was what you had in mind, but I'm now singing buttermint, buttermint, buttermint tea to the tune of Cottlestone Pie as sung by the inimitable Rowlf from the Muppets. in case no-one else is as old as me remembers it.

Not that I have any idea what buttermint tea actually is.

NFD going well. I skipped breakfast and had quite a big late lunch, so I'll only want a small tea. Unfortunately I'm not one of the people who struggles to eat on NFDs - I could easily eat that thin person recommended by BCF and still have room for a couple of Mars bars. Looks like I will come in on target today though.

Good luck to all Monday fasters - not long to go now.
