Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I don't know if everyone's aware but you can download from iPlayer now and keep programme's for a month.

Belated Flowers for the new thread.

Eatriskier · 02/02/2014 21:46

With the horizon thing, weren't they on very extreme diets too? So a person doing a proper high fat/low carb or visa versa may not take it to quite the lengths they went to?

CheshireSplat · 02/02/2014 21:47

Hi all. Just wanted to say thank for the encouragement to do some exercise! When I went to the gym on Friday morning I did some HIIT (well more Medium IIT, but it was the first time!). Made it a bit more interesting.

I've had a lovely indulgent weekend which has been good fun but also interesting. Chinese buffet lunch on Friday, lots of beer and Thai food yesterday and full English breakfast this morning! So I was very full but enjoyed it all. And, and this is the point, if I had been doing WW or something similar I think I would now be giving up after blowing it this weekend. But as it is I'm looking forward to Tuesday's FD and am just not going to worry about my weight this week. After all this WOE is for the rest of my life and I only get to go away with DH every so often!

Feeling optimistic!

In response to the bad nights sleep on FDs I slept badly for the first couple of weeks but that has passed.

ShyGirlie · 02/02/2014 21:50

right, mega help needed to nake me not quit 2moro...

what can i eat for dinner?!?

lunch will either be porridge (160 cal) or soup (180 cal) so leaves about 320-340 for dinner.

Have either had chicken stir fry or omelette every FD for over 3 weeks now so fed up with those.

Must be very easy with basic ingredients!!

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 02/02/2014 22:03

What about what you dont have for lunch? IE if you have Porridge for lunch, have soup for dinner. Bulk the calories up a bit by adding something to it too.

zedzedzed · 02/02/2014 22:06

I'd marinade some steak in something sweet/salty/spicy/chinese-y (honey/soy/chilli/ginger) then cut into strips and flash fry briefly then serve over an enormous rocket/cucumber/onion/tomato salad, using the pan juices as dressing.

Or do the same with a salmon fillet done in the oven and or serve with half a packet of Tilda microwave rice (coconut's nice) or half a packet of Ainley harriet cous-cous.

DON'T QUIT!

Maybe ditch the porridge for a proper big dinner instead?!

zedzedzed · 02/02/2014 22:11

Or cooked chicken on a big salad with asparagus spears and a small amount of really strong cheese sprinkled over and a soft poached egg on top.

neverletmego · 02/02/2014 22:15

ShyGirlie, on my first FD I made some paste - basically hard boiled egg mashed with canned tuna. Very nice with some veg on the side :)

CheshireSpat, great You enjoyed your weekend - gives me hope because I've always been the kind of 'all or nothing' when it came to dieting.... so either under-eating or over-eating (but not truly enjoying it).

I followed Your advice and had no sugar yesterday or today (well there were some carbs in some falafel I had, but no sugar), and tomorrow is FD so again none. Feeling funny - less faint, but like I don't know if I'm hungry or not.... Hmm

Chocupid · 02/02/2014 22:19

Thanks postman looking for a bit of inspiration ahead of tomorrow's FD

Megrim · 02/02/2014 22:28

shygirlie I've found it best to not have breakfast or lunch - the Marigold bouillon is surprisingly filling for only 15 cals to keep you going. That gives you the option of some of the tastier ready meals, or I find a fishcake (270 cals) plus a big salad with some strong cheese crumbled over it fills a hole.

Felt chuffed this evening when DS (he's 8) said I was looking a lot slimmer. He is a charmer.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2014 22:47

Well done on the HIIT, Cheshire. It goes well with 5:2
You've made a good start and you'll soon find your fitness improving, so you can gradually build up the intensity.
There are a massive number of ways to do HIIT - types of exercise, length of intervals etc. Check the 52 exercise thread for different HIIT routines to try.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2014 22:56

ShyGirlie Most veg is low cal and you get a lot for comparatively few calories.
I sometimes have simple meat, mixed veg (from the freezer) and bean (tinned) stews with butternut squash or a small bit of potato.
Or some white fish (that's low cal) with mushrooms, peas, carrots, asparagus, peppers.

Also, umpteen decent ready meals within 320 calories, if you find your invention flagging.

TIP. DD was dry and clean (fully trained) for 18 months before this nonsense with the poo started June last year.

So it's not a case of can't but won't.

The poo withholding coincided with two things. Firstly, DS starting to speak fluently (ie taking up chatting time with us). And secondly, another boy at pre-school was withholding poo.

So yes that's what it is.

I can't ignore it and leave her to it as when she withholds she can keep going for an entire week or longer and she could
Actually damage her bowels if I left her to it.
She also has a little bit of poo escaping here and there and if I don't keep an eye on it she could end up with chemical burns on her bum between her cheeks so to speak.

(Sorry. tMI).

TIP. I am glad you've never had to experience this. It's a nightmare. And it causes health problems possibly long term for DD. about 25% of children go through this with either wee or poo between the ages of 3 and 7.

So TIP it isn't anything to do with toilet training in DDs case as she had been dry and clean for a long time.
And she cannot be told to just get on with it or we would end up in hospital or with a social services visit or worse.

Bigchoc. I do mini fasts. Either because I am planning a blowout and I need to save some extra cals up Grin or because I cannot manage a full FD but want to make as much effort as my day/situation will allow.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/02/2014 23:22

How exasperating for you, MrsF and what a lot of yukky work.
I'd no idea the problem was so widespread.

To all suffering DMs here: I hope that all your reluctant poopers / rampant piddlers produce the goods at the appropriate time and place - on the loo.

MrsFlorrick · 02/02/2014 23:49

Thanks Bigchoc. Thanks

Bet you're glad you don't have to
Suffer any of this!

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 07:45

Mrs F my stepdaughter used to withold poo, for about a week at a time (9days quite often) when she was 3. It lasted about 6months and passed as she calmed down generally.

I think when they make huge developmental leaps they often struggle elsewhere and regress (food refusal, night waking and poo witholding are very common accompaniments to big milestones). You can't actually DO anything about these things but if you can possibly hold on to the knowledge that this WILL pass as she moves on to a new milestone you might just stay sane. (I'm saying this as someone who is near militant about discipline and eating and sleeping routines;I'm not a crunchy or a softy).

It happened to one of the kids I nannied for too, it's very common and it sounds like you are doing all the right things, I just hope it passes soon as it must be really stressful when it's your own DC (neither of mine are at toilet training point yet and I'm dreading it tbh).

When she feels all safe, secure and settled in herself and with her big leap forward, she'll move on from witholding...especially if there's any way on God's green Earth you can try to underplay the whole stinky situation. xxx

turkeybaby · 03/02/2014 07:51

Morning to all of todays fasters.

Well done to bssh a fantastically inspirational story to read. I hope you are feeling rightfully proud of yourself.

I'm on week 4 now and have managed 2 fast days a week. I'm finding i like to keep it very simple on FDs and not think about food at all so i just have shop bought soup for lunch and dinner and lots of drinks during the day. Only lost a couple of pounds so far but its going in the right direction.

postmanpatscat · 03/02/2014 08:16

Morning all

Just checking in for my first fast in three weeks. Who's joining me?

MrsFlorrick · 03/02/2014 08:19

Thanks Thanks Zedzed.

She did a poo this am. SHe got up and went by herself and only shouted for me for wiping. First time I've been happy to be woken up at 5am!

I know it will pass. I just want to help her get past it pref without too many associated health issues (UTIs etc).

Poor DS is a bit better but clearly not 100%.

Trying for an FD today. It could well be a mini fast given tiredness but I'm giving it a good go.

Good luck to all the Monday fasters today. Smile

MrsFlorrick · 03/02/2014 08:32

Postmanpatscat. I'm with you Grin

I made chicken soup yesterday (and stock) with chicken carcass. So I have a quick FD fix ready when needed.

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 08:38

Yes postman FD here too.

Plan is to power through on LOF till 7.30pm, then chicken and stilton salad with a poached egg on top.

My only tricky part now that I've settled into this routine is at about 9pm when I'm suddenly RAVENOUS. I distract myself with sewing curtains and painting furniture for the new house, and I try to save enough for a hot choc at that hour, but I could eat a scabby dog by 10pm when I usually head to an early bed, knowing I'll wake up at 3am with the urge to eat my plumpcious baby girl!

And then I argue with myself about when the FD officially ends, but by the time I get up for my NFD brekkie at 7am I've lost my appetite and my NFDs are mostly 16:8 for that reason...although I still struggle with the 9-11pm part of the night, 'kitchen closed' doesn't stop my wanting an evening munch. It's odd, as I don't need to snack in the day, and it's not just from habit, I'm genuinely hungry at 10pm!

Anyhoo, my fat bra is for the bin this week, down to my chubby bra. Yay! Skinny bra is a year off...but still; it's all heading the right way!

Happy Monday FD all! And happy munching you lucky NFD-ers!

neverletmego · 03/02/2014 09:10

I'm with you guys - 2nd FD.
I haven't had any sugar yesterday, so feel quite hungry but will do my best do distract myself...

good luck to everyone!

BiscuitBribery · 03/02/2014 09:26

Hi all! Just checking in after a few days absence. Bad week of illness and lack of sleep last week so I was happy to discover at my weigh in this morning that I've maintained. So that's 5lbs off in two weeks, happy with that. Now, back to it, there's plenty more where that came from!

BsshBossh · 03/02/2014 09:28

Morning all. Checking in for FD today - my first as a maintainer :) So my plan is to LOF all day then eat absolutely normally (no limiting calories) tonight.

zedzedzed · 03/02/2014 09:30

Wow Bssh how fantastic! Enjoy your dinner.
