The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Hi all, haven't checked in for ages, but doing well this week and a far less indulgent weekend than the previous two! I'm with TIP in the saving calories for alcohol strategy... 500 under TDEE today and FD of 450 yesterday. Planning FD2 tomorrow and 16:8 thurs/fri.
MrsF hope you feel better soon and the MrF is looking after you
Zed sounds like you're doing brilliantly, keep it up!
Oh dear I've lost track of everything/one else, but well done/hang on in there/keep it up/clench/drink water - delete as appropriate Blush Grin

TalkinPeace · 04/02/2014 22:05

welcome back Rani : this is a good place to help keep on track

hopefulgum · 04/02/2014 22:28

Good morning! Sorry to hear that MrsF has the flu. How awful Bear And that others have been unwell too.

Great NSV everywhere: Doris - not even thinking about eating the pastries!Fantastic. And Rani, staying on track (we all know how hard that can be). Zed, wow! Into those jeans already. So Envy of you! And of course so very pleased for you! Thanks

I received a pair of jeans yesterday, which I bought off ebay. A gorgeous pair of Mavi stretch skinnies, dark denim. I was so exited. I bought a 14 because all my 16's are too loose. Well, I couldn't get the f*&^ers over my things, could I???Angry These jeans will be my motivator, and hopefully they will one day be loose too. I guess I was a bit optimistic when I bought them....

Although the scales are not reporting huge weight loss for me (almost 3 kilos - about 6.5 pounds, since just before Christmas, so a couple of months) I do feel slimmer and I am pleasantly surprised with the shrinkage of tummy flap(...a result of the ravages of five births over 17 years, and eating like a pig eating for two for about 3.75 years.)

I know I still have to work on getting the TDEE right on NFD's. I am amazed and in awe of those of you who are consistently under TDEE on NFD's. I wish I could do better and really need to think about why I go over. Actually, I know why I do.It is almost always due to socialising. Any tips on how to manage that?

Had a great FD yesterday. Having vegie soup at lunch time is great (mine comes in at about 40-60 calories), it has so few calories that dinner is easy. Last night I had a delicious meal of fish and a zucchini (courgette) gratin made with sliced zucchini, chicken stock and onions layered, with a mashed potato and sprinkling of cheese topping, baked in the oven. Oh my, it was delicious. The whole meal was about 420 calories.Grin

Another FD tomorrow, but I'm at the stage now where it is coming very naturally, which is great.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/02/2014 22:51

Hopeful If I'm going out to eat, then I don't eat anything else all day.
If there are supposed to be 2 meals out, I only eat one of them and I just drink tea or espresso instead of the other meal, but no juice or anything with calories.

If the socialising is only for late supper, then I have a 150 cal low carb shake for lunch.

BsshBossh · 04/02/2014 22:55

hopeful I'm another meal skipper to make way for social eating.

DorisAllTheDay · 04/02/2014 23:12

Hooray, successful FD here. Hope other fasters had good days too.

MrsF, you do sound very poorly indeed. Thanks Take care of yourself, don't even think about weight loss, and put all your energy into feeling better.

I wish I had difficulties eating my TDEE. I could treble it on NFDs, no trouble. Ah well, off to bed to dream of sardines on toast and curly wurlies.

DorisAllTheDay · 04/02/2014 23:17

Ooops, didn't see the last page before I posted - this thread moves so fast!

I was wondering where you'd gone, mscnile, nice to see you again. Sounds like things are going well - congratulations on successful FDs and NFDs.

tanukiton · 05/02/2014 03:42

Ok I am going try a fast day tomorrow wish me luck! off to check the calorie count of tofu. I have never counted calories ( which might be why i need to try something new). It is cabbage tofu and shirataki for me. The hardest point will be when the kids are in bed and I can roam the kitchen......

Eatriskier · 05/02/2014 07:28

hopeful another meal skipper here in lieu of going out. I tend to skip breakfast as try to pack in a low car filling lunch late. Then I eat guilt free whilst out. Though before when I was fairly sedentary I would also skip the lunch too.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/02/2014 07:49

MrsF Big (({hugs})) and Flowers
I do hope you are feeling a bit better this morning and that your flu flies away very soon.

Also hope that DH of yours is fulfilling his responsibilities for once and looking after you & the DCs properly.
Ooh, I wonder how he is coping with your DD's poo retention and skid marks

Dotty342kids · 05/02/2014 08:18

Morning all! So I've been a dedicated 5:2'er for a year now and my broad summary is this:
Height: 5"4
Age: 40
Weight as of Jan 2013: 11st 8lbs
Lowest weight during last year: 10st 3lbs achieved around Sept 2014
Been hovering between 10st 4lbs and 10st 6lbs between Sept - Dec 2014.
Think my "stall" was mostly down to taking my eye off the ball on non fast days and over eating on them but I was ok with settling at that weight as was back in size 12 clothes which is always my benchmark of being an ok weight / size for me Smile
However, since the start of Jan I've crept back up to 10st 8lbs and, what is worse, is that all my bad old cake and chocolate eating habits have returned Sad. Yup, secret trips to the nearest shop on excuse of buying a newspaper / something else, only to buy and eat chocolate before returning home. As soon as kids are in bed and husband is away, I'm rifling through cupboards and then having to replace what I've eaten before anyone notices Sad. I hate it!!!

So, no more! Today will be a proper, good, fast day and from tomorrow I'm going to return to MFP to track and monitor my daily intake as I need to stop the slide back into bad eating and weight gain before it takes hold of me.

Hand holding and kicking of backside from all you lovely folk is required please Smile

mscnile · 05/02/2014 08:28

Morning Dotty good luck with fasting today, I'll be with you!
Hope your dreams of sardines and curly wurlys were pleasant Doris Grin
Fasting today, will shred before work too, if I get a move on...

zedzedzed · 05/02/2014 08:39

dotty I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your secret chocolate confession; either way I'm totally rooting for you.

You've done brilliantly already and I bet once you get back in the swing of logging and proper fasting you'll see a change and wonder why you had a slide back in the first place (when I have in the past it's been pretty clear to me, afterwards what precipitated my slippery slope, usually emotional upheaval or untalked about anxiety...well, until 3yrs ago when it got out of hand due to my Carb Babies, no excuse for those!)

Have a brilliant day, I really hope you kick the hell outta it and end up all empty, clean and ready to eat it (some of it) tomorrow. XXX

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 05/02/2014 09:47

I need a kick up the arse! I have had 2 ridiculous days, eating cake, chocolate, cheese on toast, sweets (stupid job doesn't help!)

This is around the time I usually start slipping/giving up every time I've tried to lose weight before (about a month in) but I need to stick with this, I will not be a fat bride! And for my sons, I want to run around and play football with them this summer not sitting like a beached whale on the side watching them play with DP....

Right on a FD today and need to bloody do it properly! I may be checking in a lot today....

BsshBossh · 05/02/2014 09:52

Dotty lovely honest review Thanks. But look at it this way: you've lost a stone! That's a big achievement in my book. So give yourself a pat on the back both for losing weight and for resolving to get back properly on the 5:2 wagon. You used to be a regular poster on these threads so keep posting and keep being honest. 2014 is your year! Go girl!

BsshBossh · 05/02/2014 09:53

Poked here's a kick up the arse from me! If you want to lose weight you have to exert self-control. Simple but hard. But you can do it!

BigChocFrenzy · 05/02/2014 10:01

Dotty Don't know if I'm entitled to lecture anyone on choc munching
Hmm
but here goes:

  • Today is a healthy choc-free FD
  • Tomorrow & Thursday will be healthy choc-free NFDs
  • Chocolate-guzzling is not wanking, so in future will only be done in public

**

Today is the start towards the new healthy slimline Dotty !

DorisAllTheDay · 05/02/2014 10:27

Dotty, I have the secret chocolate thing going on as well - I totally sympathise. I live on my own now, so it's not quite so obvious, but large quantities of cake, chocolate (and in my case buns and bagels) are definitely a private treat. And I lost it totally in December after more than a year of careful eating and weight loss (not 5:2). I'm still not back to my pre-December weight yet, but getting there. I started 5:2 in early January as a way of kick-starting myself again, and it seems to be working.

You can do this! Speaking as one who bears the bruises of multiple falls off the wagon and painful climbings-back on, it's possible. Hope your FD goes well today - I'll be thinking of you and wishing you well.

Gawd, BC, I can't imagine only ever eating chocolate in public for the future. The very idea of not occasionally curling up on the sofa with a family-sized Milky Bar makes me want to cry. I know I can't do it often, but I seem to need the knowledge that I can do it every once in a while.

Good luck with your FD, Badger. When is your wedding? That's a brilliant goal to aim for, but if it's far away, would one or more intermediate goals help? If you normally give up after a month then maybe you need something to work towards on a monthly basis? I read somewhere that the average 'diet' lasts 19 days, so you're already doing better than the average!! Let us know how it goes today.

Zed, the dreams were great, but the reality of sardines on toast this morning was even better. Mmmmm. Can't remember who it was who suggested it, but it was a lovely breakfast. I've reconsidered the curly wurly position. Thing is, I could fit one in and still have a reasonably healthy and within-TDEE NFD, but I don't think I could stick to just one. If I start moseying around the chocolates I'll buy loads. All I have to do is see the special offers (and there are always special offers on chocolate) and before I know it, vast quantities have been bought and eaten. So curly wurlies are off this week. I might have one, in full public view, at the weekend - I'll ask someone else to buy it for me though!

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 05/02/2014 10:47

Doris its next September so ages away yet but I also have loads to shift! So far, so good today ignores the fact its still only 10.45am!

Dotty342kids · 05/02/2014 10:58

Aw, thanks for your support everyone, it really does help a lot to have a 5:2 team in my corner, so to speak! Grin

You're right of course, I can sort this out, I know I can. When I started 5:2 I really didn't miss chocolate or cakes much at all. Trouble is, once you start eating them again (and I only speak for myself here!), you really can't put the brakes on again.
For me, I think I need to focus on absolutely no cake / chocs on weekdays but allow them at weekends.
Good luck to all fellow fasters today and I'll try to get to know some of you newer folk on here soon too Smile

Breadandwine · 05/02/2014 11:08

Ok I am going try a fast day tomorrow wish me luck! off to check the calorie count of tofu. I have never counted calories ( which might be why i need to try something new). It is cabbage tofu and shirataki for me. The hardest point will be when the kids are in bed and I can roam the kitchen…..

Good luck with your FD tomorrow, tanukiton! After dinner, put a sign on the kitchen door - 'Sorry, kitchen's closed'. Grin

Do I detect another vegan, here? Intrigued by the cabbage and tofu (which I've never got on with) recipe - sounds like it should go on the recipe thread! Smile

almostthereagain · 05/02/2014 11:22

Go badger & dotty almost half way through today alreadySmile
Love the chocolate/wanking big choc inspiredGrin
To those of you struggling to eat up to TDEE Problems I wish I had! Mine is 1500! My prob was eating similar sized portions as my 6'2 dhHmm
Was unsure whether to fast today or tomorrow but woke up hungry. Have now caved in to grilled cheese (yes that's you zed, been on my mind for days now) so FD tomorrow decided. Have a great day everyone hope the poorlies are feeling stronger. x

zedzedzed · 05/02/2014 11:33

almost Noooo, it wasn't me!

I'm not the cheesy enabler!

It was my DH eating 3 rounds of it on white tiger bread, right BESIDE me...and on a bloody FD! I was just relating how hard it was, not suggesting it as a snack...I caved too btw and had some on my next NFD. Just one, and it was on brown so a bit rubbish actually.

Hope yours was yummy.

BetsyBell · 05/02/2014 11:38

Being ill sucks Sad

I have a non-specific viral thing that is making me want to eat constantly and I can't exercise, all of which is making me feel miserable. I did manage a fast day on Monday but it was awful and I think I would have been better off to have not done it - it may have been responsible for the yesterday's non-stop eat-a-thon. I am not going to fast tomorrow and hopefully just eat modestly for a few days. I will 16:8 instead.
