The 5:2 thread number 36
The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body right body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I was really looking forward to cheese fondue this afternoon, but realised that as I'm flying to UK with dd tomorrow, I don't want to be fasting in UK, I want to swim in toffee and Indian food, not together and not literally, so will have to fast today and tomorrow. Which is making it miles harder. I was so looking forward to that hot melty cheese. Argh.

We have just got the aria scales which are part of the fitbit stuff. I am addicted to weighing too but never feel it's going in the right direction :(

But I have lost inches - happened to find from a year ago my stats, and am v surprised and chuffed. Wonder if my SIL will notice if I've lost. Need some mega motivation atm.

hope all the poor lies are getting better. My ds was puking so I've had to come home from work early which I feel bad about. I'm pretty new there so hope doesn't piss em off .

zedzedzed · 04/02/2014 11:35

I do have a fab bloke BCF and Bsssh and french and others kind enough to say so...I also have THE FIRST PAIR OF JEANS ON!

Well, I had them on, they hurt like Hell and looked terrible, like an over-stuffed bratwurst...but they were over my arse and I had my mummy apron of flab tucked into them...and the bloody button was done up! (just)

Ok, so crow-barring myself in is not ideal, but it's a start.

Two more pairs of jeans to go before my skinnies get a try on.

YAY!

Thanks all, this thread really helps me stay focused. XXX

Felix90 · 04/02/2014 11:37

Zed that's ace! As long as you can do the button up, that's all that matters right now. Well done Grin

BsshBossh · 04/02/2014 11:50

Hurrah Zed!

almostthereagain · 04/02/2014 12:17

Yay zed You'll be in those skinnies in no time.

almostthereagain · 04/02/2014 12:23

How come yesterday I was desperately looking forward to a crumpet & or grilled cheese (thanks zedAngry ) & today I'm craving saladConfused
Bet I'll want white carbs again next fast day!

DorisAllTheDay · 04/02/2014 13:07

Fantastic, Zed, that's brilliant news! Just think, if you keep it up, you'll be wearing those jeans comfortably and for real in a couple of weeks. And happy month-iversary. It'll be my 5:2 month-iversary this Sunday, but Saturday is my birthday with eating and drinking well beyond TDEE on the plan, so I'm going to weigh in on Saturday morning before the damage is done!

Congratulations as well to Felix. Fantastic start.

BigChoc, I'm afraid I could easily eat to TDEE in five hours. In fact, I can do it in less than one. Blush Calorie-counting is a must for me, for the time being at least.

I've had a massive NSV and I'm so chuffed with myself. I'm on an FD today, and I've just sat through a two-hour (very boring) meeting where there were lots of lovely pastries on the table. Not only did I restrain myself from having any (including when I was asked at the end whether I wanted to take some of the uneaten ones away with me) but I kind of knew right from when I first clocked them that I wasn't going to give way IYSWIM. I honestly wasn't even sitting there trying to stop myself, it was like, 'It's a fast day, so there's no option'.

Today's FD is going to be hard. Yesterday's NFD came in well under TDEE, and I think might have been too far below it (700 calories under) for a pre-FD because I'm now seriously hungry with a long way to go until teatime. I think I'll aim to eat closer to TDEE tomorrow and Thursday.

Breadandwine · 04/02/2014 14:15

Lovely getting up to date with this thread - as usual!

Some serious 'Well dones' called for - too many to name! [stars]

About press-ups:
Until I saw BCF's way of doing them I had been practicing for about 6 weeks - 3 sets of 20, every day. But I could never get more than about halfway down - and I wasn't seeing any improvement.

But once I began using BCF method - which is basically to lie down first, then push yourself up - I noticed an immediate improvement.

So much so that last night, for the first time, I did 3 x 20 proper push-ups, lifting my hands off the floor for each one, and remaining in a straight line as I lifted. My ambition now is to speed up and slap the floor between each one, a la BCF! Grin

So thanks, BigChoc! Thanks

wildwater · 04/02/2014 16:08

I don't do press-ups, but the repeated 'lowering-downs' in yoga are doing great things for my arms and stomach.

I am having to remind myself to eat a bit more on NFDs...except I am reverting to eating a little lunch on FDs (an excellent vegan cook staying here) so maybe that all balances out.

I am still losing weight, and changing shape. There really WAS a thin person inside trying to get put...and we finally met Grin

MazzleDazzle · 04/02/2014 16:44

Well done zed! Be proud of fitting into those jeans, even if you did look "like an overstuffed bratwurst"! After a while, the material will slacken and stretch with wear and next week and the week after, they'll fit even better. I was delighted to wear my 'thin' trousers, muffin-top and all! Before they wouldn't go past my knees.

Went to docs with the wee one. Eldest DD is also off school sick, so my mum came over to watch her whilst I took the youngest to docs. He prescribed a steroid cream for the rash/spots on face and bottom and didn't seem concerned by her vomiting. She's eating and drinking, which is good. Told him that eldest DD and I have severely sore throats - even with ibuprofen, co-codamol and throat spray it is sore to swallow, but again he was a bit dismissive. I swear, you learn more from google than your Dr!

MrsFlorrick · 04/02/2014 17:09

Mazzle. Sorry you're all still feeling shite.

DD and I are in bed. I have been so ill that I collapsed during a toilet trip during the night and DH had to haul me into bed and call out of hours doc. My temp was 39.8 even after nurofen.

I've got flu. Feel terrible. DH is in charge of DC and house. Yikes. It could well be a smoking ruin by tomorrow.

Breadandwine. Bigchocs press up method is the business. I only used to be able to do pathetic girly press ups until I tried the Bigchocfrenzy way Grin

And Bigchoc. Thanks

Eatrisker. Sorry you're suffering too.

Everyone else thanks for the wishesThanks

Zedzed. Hurrah!! You go!!! GrinGrinGrin Brilliant. You're well on your way.

I watched that horizon sugar vs fat programme. This certainly explain why low carbing for months and months didn't work for me and interestingly why it didn't lower my high blood pressure etc.

Also partly explains why my blood pressure etc is now normal after a short 6 months on 5:2. Ie giving your system a rest and not cutting out any food groups BUT avoiding much of the sugar and fat combined which does the damage. I tend to avoid it on 5:2 because of the super high cal content.

Interesting (strokes beard knowingly).

zedzedzed · 04/02/2014 17:48

mrs F I just never pictured you as bearded.

Hmmmm...interesting...

Thanks all, (still chuffed I squeezed in there), and get well soon to the poor poorlies.

XXX

MazzleDazzle · 04/02/2014 17:58

MrsF that's terrible! Thanks You must feel absolutely terrible. Hope it doesn't last!

TalkinPeace · 04/02/2014 18:23

(((( MrsF )))) hope MrF breaks the habit of a lifetime and rises to the challenge.
Bearded : well you are almost a viking after all Grin

Felix90 · 04/02/2014 18:59

I'm on a NFD and still got 700 calories left Blush why does this keep happening to me?! When I did IF before, I had no problem with eating all my calories. I'm going to have an ice cream later on but it's only 195 calories.

Today I've had 2 slices of fruit load with marmalade and a coffee for my breakfast, BBQ super noodles, a satsuma and a yoghurt for my dinner and a chicken stir fry for my tea. And another 2 coffees through the day. I seem to be really struggling to reach my calorie intake Shock this is so weird for me, being a massive eater usually.

Felix90 · 04/02/2014 18:59

MrsF that's awful! Hope you're all feeling better soon.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/02/2014 19:09

BreadAndWine, MrsF I'm so glad the BigChoc way to press-ups worked for you. Very well done to you both, because you still had to work hard and practice to achieve your press-ups.

B&W 3x 20 sets is a high standard. You have progressed so well and the chin-ups are coming along too.
btw: Have you noticed your shoulders, biceps and maybe forearms getting a bit bigger, maybe also the abs a bit more defined ? I noticed this when I was able to do a lot of press-ups and also lift heavy.

Megrim · 04/02/2014 19:09

Felix do you dream of yummy things on FDs, and then find you're not hungry on NFDs?

Felix90 · 04/02/2014 19:15

Yes Megrim! Also I think logging everything on MFP is making me more aware of calories in things and if I'm actually hungry or not. It's very odd.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/02/2014 19:31

Felix, anyone else under-eating on NFDs
Some ideas to eat up to your TDEE healthily omstead of via ice cream:

Carnivorous Dishes

  • Salmon & veg rice with creamed spinach
  • Sardines & tomatoes on toast
  • Prawns or chicken with avocado & salad as starter
  • Stir fried fish / meat with veg and brown rice

Weekend Breakfasts
-Fry-up / grill : bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans

BigChocFrenzy · 04/02/2014 19:45

Cheddar goes well with apple slices
Smile
I found yesterday it also goes brilliantly with prawns and lemon
