Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I'll show him your post big choc!! I think he agrees with the high intensity stuff, just not the drawn out not so intensive cardio - like aerobics. But he definitely thinks good technique/strong, not out of puff. sagging hamster?!! Brilliant!

ShyGirlie · 30/01/2014 19:41

Maintained weight again this morning. Lost 4lb last week though so am hoping for 1lb off next week to keep the motivation up.

Havent been very well the past few days so wasnt going to bother with FD today. But, i have managed to push on with just 180cal soup for lunch so far 2day.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 30/01/2014 19:44

Can't believe some of you are baking while fasting. That's iron discipline for you.

mrsF sorry to hear about FIL's fall, it sounds like things are really tough, finding good help is not easy.

eat I can sooo relate to challenging toddlers, until recently my nickname for dd was captain incontinence (not to her face Grin). The toilet issue is much better but I'm sick of the massive meltdown about nothing.

I've been an idiot today. Planned 750 fast day and I should come in under this but instead of finishing on 200 cals is soup I've had 200 cals of dark chocolate Blush.

TalkinPeace · 30/01/2014 20:00

Toffee
Did not mean to make you feel defensive, and bear in mind my kids would much rather your kitchen smells than mine! BUT baked foods are all highly calorific so either everybody is eating a lot or the balance of sugar and carbs and fats to protein is worth thinking about.

Part of this WOE is to think about how we got to needing it in the first place and setting our kids up with the eating patterns that ensure they never need to go on a "weight loss diet"

Breadandwine · 30/01/2014 20:26

Thought I'd wandered into the exercise thread for a moment! Grin

Just had a very pleasant surprise - I emailed the local WEA organiser offering to do some voluntary work and wondering if she could find me an outlet.

She's only come back and offered me 45 hours paid work! Shock

Just made a 5:2 'Chocolate cake in a mug' (should be renamed 'cake in a cereal bowl'!) and had a third of it with some Alpro custard.

(There's a thought for you custard-lovers - only 81 cals per 100g!)

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 30/01/2014 20:29

No one is eating a lot in my house. I adapt the recipe to minimise the sugar. The children have more than their 5 a day, nearer 10, and they are all very healthy and slim. I have three children. I am not baking for one child and I have to feed them 5 meals between them. I must admit I am pretty fed up now. It is obvious I cook a lot from scratch. My children hardly have any processed crap and when they do it is fish fingers or vegetable nuggets or decent chicken nuggets. It was my son who enjoyed 5 small bowls of winter veg soup and another who asked for more sprouts rather than roasties. I suspect they have a bigger variety and amount of fruit and veg than many people.

I feel like my parenting is being criticised. I am much better with them precisely because my childhood eating experience was so shit and I come from a family of fat women.

I know you are trying to help TiP.

TalkinPeace · 30/01/2014 20:31

Aha, have just realised my dreadful mistake.
Toffee treats us with the recipes she knows will make us all drool, rather than the ones we know we should be feeding to our kids ( mine had pasta, pesto and fruit for supper, lazy slob that I am! )

Breadandwine · 30/01/2014 20:35

I meant to add a link with the chocolate cake. Confused

FF you could certainly add some mashed garlic bulbs to the dough - in with the flour.

Or you could divide it in two, quickly roll it out into two circles, smear garlic paste over one and place the other circle over the top.

Anything will work in bread - you just need the confidence to have a go! Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2014 20:50

Wow, that's wonderful about the 45hrs, B&W. Your resumé obviously inpressed.
If you showed her your kettle she'd want you full-time
Smile ^^

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2014 20:56

Toffee We all know you are a super mum and you cook delicious nourishing meals for your family. Much better than all that horrible processed junk so many kids get. You work very hard looking after everyone.
Don't worry, nobody meant to criticise.

zedzedzed · 30/01/2014 21:17

toffee you sound like a marvel of a mummy.
Sugar isn't the enemy; feeling shit about yourself is.

Bake your heart out you clever girl; it's cheap, it's healthy, it's an excellent example to give your kids and will help them feed their families in years to come and also teaches them a myriad of important things about food and family.
I'm sure your stuff is full of fruity/honey/cheesy/veggy goodness and not made of crap and 90% sugar or anything.

My salted coffee caramel cupcakes are NOT full of goodness, both salt, fat and sugar AND coffee and I must stop baking them...but they are so good and my only vice right now...plus I pay for them in banking calories elsewhere.

Can't wait to hear what muffin you will make tomorrow as it makes me smile to imagine you ignoring the stiffening mice corpses as you whip up another batch! XXX

ErrolTheDragon · 30/01/2014 21:27

Salted coffee caramel cupcakes .... wow, those must be addictive! Grin

My FD has gone OK - black coffee in the morning, miso for lunch, a cup of tea in the afternoon and then the other half (I only made 2 portions) of the butternut squash and chorizo stew for an early dinner before conference call company meeting which ran from 5:30 to 7 - glad I ate first. Then a chili lime drumstick after ... I've already measured out my milk for bedtime tea and still have an odd 69 cals if I need them.

MazzleDazzle · 30/01/2014 21:30

Baking on a FD? Food shopping on a FD? Pah! That's nothing...today I sat in a chippy whilst my two kids had chicken fillets, battered sausage and chips! I, saint that I am, had a black coffee!

Just back from a workout and resolve is fading, but I'm determined to make it through. Will check in tomorrow after my fitness test results and body analysis! I'm actually pretty excited, as I am definitely fitter than I used to be and my body has changed too.

Well done fellow fasters, we're almost there!

zedzedzed · 30/01/2014 21:43

Oh my God Mazzle you are a total hero! I can barely walk past, never mind sit in. Chippy chips and also garlicky pasta are the two best tasting foods in the whole world.

One day, not so long from now, when I'm thin, I will save up all my fasting deficit calories and eat just those two things for a whole weekend. Except I won't, because my food issues will be dead and buried by then!

MazzleDazzle · 30/01/2014 21:51

And DD has just vomited again...I thought we were over this!

Felix90 · 30/01/2014 21:56

Sitting in the chippy and resisting?! Ultimate will power!

Second fd for me today and managed on water and coffee until tea time. Made salmon and couscous for tea but overestimated the couscous and ended up 100 cals over Confused but I was 500 under yesterday by accident so I'm sure it will balance out! Found today really easy which I was surprised at!

MazzleDazzle · 30/01/2014 21:57

Did feel like a bit of a weirdo though zed when they said, "And what are you having?"
Eh..."A diet coke and a black coffee!"
Cue strange looks from her and other customers.

Oh but garlicky linguine...mmmm!

MazzleDazzle · 30/01/2014 22:03

Felix that happened to me last week: one FD under, one over, (in terms of cals) and it was fine. The great thing about this WOL is that things even themselves out. It's ok to be over sometimes, as the days you're under will make up for it.

Very impressed that on only day 2 you can last until tea time! According to the long termers, this seems to be the goal.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 30/01/2014 22:16

mazzle well done on your chip shop victory - shame about dd still being ill.

felix it sounds like you are a natural at this fasting malarkey.

b&w great news on the 45 hours.

Nearly in bed = successful fast. Best of luck to tomorrow's fasters

Jobyloo · 30/01/2014 22:32

Yay the end of 2 FDs together and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Just sat having a yummy cup of G&B cocoa. Dinner was a mare due to the salmon being off...yuck! So had salad, three boiled pots and mozzarella...well it filled a hole... sort ofSmile

Baking in the morning, banana loaf and can't wait to have a slice. B&W must have a go at baking bread, your blog makes it look so easy.

Hats go off to those who can bake, shop & visit a chippy on a FD !!!

Tomorrow is the last day of January and last day of no alcohol, fingers crossed Feb doesn't get messy Wink

Night all.

hopefulgum · 30/01/2014 22:34

Mazzle, that really is a will of iron!

Sorry to hear that many of you are dealing with sick kids or feeling poorly yourselves. I hope you will feel better soon. Bear

I had a great FD yesterday. Very pleased that it feels quite easy now. They put on morning tea for the staff: cake and pastries (why can't these idiots provide healthy stuff like fresh fruit? it is always a calorie laden fat and sugar bomb.Confused I work in a school FGS, and we are always banging on about how kids should be eating more healthy food.) Anyway, I found it easy to walk past the cake and pastries (it helps that I am gluten intolerant and they don't cater for me) and just have a lovely cup of green tea. I had a bit of my zucchini (courgette) noodle soup for lunch, and was amazed to find that the "zero" noodles don't freeze or reheat well. They basically turned into strips of plastic which I had to spit out (very lady-like Hmm). I won't make that mistake again. Then we had a lovely vegie and chicken slice for dinner. It came to exactly 500.

I am supposed to weigh in this morning. But I am waiting til DH gets up, as I don't want to disturb him as it is early for him. However I have measured with the measuring tape and there's been no change. At least I haven't gone up. I am not worrying, I know how this WOE works, perhaps next week there will be a bigger change.

I feel lighter, healthier and slimmer, so that's all good. I don't have the carpel tunnel at all anymore (even when spending a long time on the computer, which usually causes a flare up), which really surprises me. Perhaps 5:2 has somehow balanced the fluid in my body? I am also able to comfortably wear my wedding ring, where before it was too tight to wear.

I have a bit of a headache this morning, perhaps from not yet having any caffeine . Or perhaps it is in anticipation of the intensely boring drivvle "professional development" I will have to sit through again today. We sat on our bums for about 5 hours yesterday. I can't believe these idiots would expect us to sit still and behave for that long after 6 weeks holiday. I certainly wouldn't expect it of students.

I cannot decide what to eat for breakfast. This is a new phenomenon from doing the 5:2. I really think long and hard about what I want to eat, why and how etc, etc, because I am so aware of calories, satisfaction and nutrients. I'm thinking some greek yoghurt with strawberries and crushed macadamias...However, I wouldn't mind something a bit more carby, like pancakes Shock But that would require some effort, so yoghurt it isGrin

woodchuck · 30/01/2014 22:49

I can't believe it. I have put on another 2lb. I have now been doing 5:2 for a full month, and having lost 6lbs in one week, I have now officially put it all back on again, and am beginning to wonder what is the point.

this week I have done 2FD on the trot as was giving blood on my usual FD. So I fasted from Tuesday after dinner (pasta w veggie sauce, no pudding) at 6pm. I did 18 hours LO, then had lunch on Wed (salad leaves, green beans, tomatoes, 1/3 tin of tuna and 2 small sliced new potatoes, basically an egg less Nicoise). For tea I had a half portion of Quorn casserole with one veggie dumpling and some green veg. I have drunk only water and lemon and ginger tea, about 2litres per day. So yesterdays calorie count on MFP came to 485kcal. I had tea at 6 pm yesterday and was LO til 1pm today. I ate another salad (leaves, tomatoes, green beans and a few slices of half fat mozzarella) and an apple. For tea I have had one poached egg, 1/3tin of baked beans and one slice of wholemeal toast, no butter. This all clocks in on MFP at 483kcal. I will not eat again til breakfast tomorrow.

On my NFD, average diet is as follows
breakfast-coffee w milk, one slice wholemeal toast with peanut butter
Snack- banana
Lunch-Veg soup, muller light yogurt, apple
Tea-veggie chili, rice, pitta bread
Drinks, 1 coffee, herbal tea, water

I have recorded measurements, and no change in a month. I am already a healthy BMI but could stand to lose some central adiposity, and maybe 7-10lbs to be at my fighting weight, but this WOE seems to be working the wrong way for me! I have not been exercising and I know I should make time, but tbh I hate all kinds of exercise, and it feels lkke such a chore. I thought this WOE was famous gor working even when you dont exercise?

Please tell me if I'm going wrong somewhere or if I could be doing something to make my fast more effective. I have enjoyed the personal challenge of 5:2 but not sure I can go much longer without seeing any benefits

BsshBossh · 30/01/2014 22:51

Well done today's fasters. Mine's over too now and 3 NFDs. I'm feelng so much better now MIL is here and taking over - I managed a very restorative nap which revived me - and DD, though still very weak and poorly is in better spirits now her beloved Grandma is here. But it was very heartening for me that she wanted only her mama (me!) when she was very tired and needing her bed. She snuggled into me as I read her her bedtime stories and fell asleep. Best feeling in the world!

Eatriskier hang in there. DD is much better (nicer, less whingy, no tantrums) being ill at 5.5yo than when she was 3yo.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2014 22:54

Glad to hear you're on the mend, Bssh
Flowers to you and your super-duper MIL !

CheshireSplat · 30/01/2014 23:00

Hopeful that's exciting about your wedding ring! That's one of my aims too. Mine is too tight so the skin underneath gets all horrible [medical term!] as I can't dry it properly.

wood sorry to hear about your difficulties. Hopefully someone more experienced and wiser than me will be along soon to help. I would have thought that having a healthy BMI would make it harder though as TFEE would be lower. Good luck!
