Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

BsshBosh your MiL sounds brilliant. I hope she's reached you safe and sound and is taking care of both you and your DD. Your cold sounds miserable, eatriskier, hope you feel better soon, meantime stay snuggled up in that onesie. Laughing at the economics of your morning at the shops, Toffee. I wish I had somewhere near me that bought old clothes, but I don't think I have. I still have four huge carrier bags-full of size 22s (yes, really) that I emptied out of the cupboards before the holidays but haven't yet taken anywhere. It was fun trying them on, though, and realising that although I've still got about a stone to go and I'm still prone to looking in the mirror and seeing a fat lady, I really have lost loads and loads already. (NB not in the three weeks I've been doing 5:2!! The major loss was August 2012-October 2013.) Not much that's 'dear' about a daughter who eats the last teacake if you ask me. Still, if we all get a wonderful teacake recipe out of it I won't complain.

DorisAllTheDay · 30/01/2014 14:14

Meant to say, NFD not going very well. I had the serious munchies late morning/lunchtime and I forgot the 'drink a glass of water first' tip. So I went out and bought two bagels to supplement my healthy lunch which means I'm already at 1400 calories or thereabouts. My TDEE is 1700 so there's not much left. I almost got into 'I've blown it so I'm going to have chocolate' territory an hour ago, but in the nick of time I remembered to drink water. Three glasses later and the munchies are gone. I'll see if I can make it through the rest of the day on some cups of tea with a splash of milk, and soup for dinner.

Dilidali · 30/01/2014 14:27

On my second FD, it's ok, only had 100 calories so far :)
Been doing fun stuff, like shopping for shoes though.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 30/01/2014 14:33

Update: the good news is I have just taken out 9 fruited take cakes from the oven that look amazing if a little big.

The bad news is I was a little keen when using the fish slice to get them off the baking tray and I have snapped it.

Bit confused that I now have to toast the teacakes before eating. I know that is what you can do with shop ones but I would have thought these would be fine straight from the oven while warm. I am revisiting having one. Bit full from a lunch of cheese and grain cobb, 3 slices, with red Leicester cheese, beetroot and salad cream followed by a double decker. First one in months and it was lovely. No chance of calorie counting everything I have eaten today.

MazzleDazzle · 30/01/2014 14:51

Mrs F do your PIL live in a city/town/village? I only ask because the smaller the place they live, the easier it should be to find someone reliable. In smaller towns everybody knows everybody's business and all carers (both good and bad) will have a reputation. If you get the chance to visit your PIL you could ask around (coffee shops, chemist, doctors's surgery, post office etc) if anyone knows of a suitable carer.

I worry about my family and my DH's family, whilst he is oblivious! I wonder what his attitude to family will be when he is old Confused.

Bssh you are indeed lucky to have wonderful GMs for your daughter. Both my DM and MIL are hard work and, at times, I feel like their mother! Starting afresh with the next generation though. I try to be the best DM I can, lots of hugs, kisses, praise...and apologies when I screw up Blush.

Thank you for the concern and sympathy re. puking child! She's at home with me today. Her sleep pattern has gone out the window, but vomiting has stopped. Water back on too and boiler fixed! We have no water tank, so no reserve if the water gets shut off. Yesterday, just had to wipe up DD's vom. so now have lots of sheets and towels to wash today! Yes, Peplum, looking after a poorly child when poorly is indeed tough, but at the moment I'm off work and I have a cleaner. I'm lucky! However, only last year, when my circumstances were different I'd be up through the night with a sick kid, have a stressful job to go to, then come home to an untidy house. Torture! I also wonder how on earth mums who are BFing their babies manage when either or both have a bug!

Oh, and I nearly forgot...FD here. Only black coffee and water so far. Looking forward to a tasty diet soda by the pool-side when DD1 is at swimming lesson.

I love reading through this thread (when I get the chance) and catching up on all of your news. This thread is what's keeping me on the straight and narrow, yet sometimes winding, 5:2 path. Thank you!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/01/2014 15:31

MrsF - even though your PILs may not be entitled to have anything paid for by social services, I'm pretty sure they should be able to help find carers, relevant equipment (eg call button) even if you have to pay.

zedzedzed · 30/01/2014 15:35

FD here, I am deaf to the call of all cupcakes. So far.

Have input everything I put in my 'What's Left In My Fridge And Not Too Mouldy Thai Green Veg Curry Thing' into MFP, 169 cals per portion,(used coconut water instead of milk, more brothy than creamy but smells good still) so we're having a tiny salmon fillet and half a packet of coconut rice each with it for our FD dinner, 478cals.

Am planning Roast chicken and roast tatties etc tomorrow...and a cupcake again. I really must quit baking.

Power on through FD people, only a few more hours till nom-nom time.

Jobyloo · 30/01/2014 16:27

Just checking in because this is danger time! I will last until 7pm I will, I will, I will! Keep going FD peeps like zzz says not long now...

Eatriskier · 30/01/2014 16:55

Thanks for all the wishes guys. Lemsip and a shower made me feel human enough to brave the outside world. MIL took DS off my hands so this afternoon I decided to do something fun as well as a quick clean and nap, so I've baked. Mad on an FD Confused. The smell of fresh spelt sandwich thins is filling the house and they look gorgoeus.

Will have to brave the outside world and pick DD up soon, but am pretty sure I am going to make it to the end of the FD as the only thing I've felt like eating is what I've had planned for dinner. And those thins...

BiscuitBribery · 30/01/2014 17:04

Food shopping for the week on a FD. WTF was I thinking?! Still going well but my word, that was torture Shock

Breadandwine · 30/01/2014 17:06

Just updated my Bread - in 13 minutes post with a few pics from this lunchtime.

This was in response to a poster on the Mumsnet loaf thread.

Now making a risotto with a Kabocha squash and chestnuts - it's a NFD, needless to say! Grin

…and I've been dancing around the kitchen to the Best of the Bee Gees - whilst my wife is at the hairdressers. Smile

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 30/01/2014 17:12

I have been busy again. Baked bread and teacakes and broke my fish slice. Now making savoury rice for the kids and burnt my hand. The savoury rice comes in below 400 if anyone wants me to post it on my recipe thread. DD stroppy so sent her away. Cats going crazy. I am ready for bed!

I am waffling. Ignore.

frenchfancy · 30/01/2014 17:28

B+W looks good. Do you think it would work well as a garlic bread?

zedzedzed · 30/01/2014 17:28

breadand what an image I have, all falsetto and bread flour. Now, what exactly is the taste of Kabocha squash please?

jobyloo COME ON WE'RE NEARLY THERE!!

Although I did just eat 3 mange tout; one legitimate to taste for seasoning, 2 illegal, just because, well, yum.

Jobyloo · 30/01/2014 17:38

zed won't say anything if you don't Wink

Feeling a splurge of cleaning coming on...anything to keep me out of the sodding kitchen. Less than 90 mins...get in!!!

DorisAllTheDay · 30/01/2014 17:42

Yes please to the savoury rice recipe, Toffee! Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better, eatriskier. I can smell your thins from here. Mmmmm, might have to make some myself this weekend.

TalkinPeace · 30/01/2014 18:04

Toffeeownsthesausage
A silly thing but you seem to bake sweet food most days.
How much sugar does your household get through : how many days a week do you try to go 'sugar free'?
Because part of setting your kids up for a long and healthy life is to ensure that their insulin systems function well.

We try to do three days a week with the only sugar DH and I have being in fruit. DD has it in her tea and DS on cereal, but cakes and the like are weekends only.

Eatriskier · 30/01/2014 18:29

ARGH!!!! 30 minutes with DD and any good mood I was in has vanished. No sleep at nursery and she's left her favourite toy behind (which DH bloody well knows he shouldn't have let her take but did anyway). So she's being naughty as hell including ruining 2 toys, weemagedon, poo distribution and is currently in time out for do what I asked her three times not to do. I need to go to bed. And not kill DH when he comes in.

TalkinPeace · 30/01/2014 18:37

TV time ... discretion is the better part of valour

almostthereagain · 30/01/2014 18:50

Oh poor you eat I remember those days as tough & that was without the fasting!
Broke my fast at 3pm, 21hrs so pleased with that. Was back to pre Christmas weight this am so hopeful that I'll be on my way to holiday weight by next weeks weigh in despite the lack of exercise.
toffee I was also wondering how you manage to fast successfully with the smell of baking, never mind the goodies calling me from the tin! You must have a will of ironGrin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 30/01/2014 18:57

Doris - I will post the recipe once I have finished this post.

TalkinPeace - I replied but deleted. Feeling defensive tbh.

almostthereagain - I find it unbelievably easy to resist most of what I bake. I am baking for the children and I know that if I have one muffin it will set off the munchies and I would rather go without.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2014 18:58

Toffee Yes, please post the savoury rice. Yum !

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 30/01/2014 19:22

Tis done BCF.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2014 19:23

DevonCreamTea
I agree women should dump the pink girlie dumbbells and do full press-ups etc. Also drop the endless 'sagging hamster' routine on the treadmill.

However, the science over the last few years - with umpteen human trials - has supported interval training, in particular HIIT, as the most efficient way to increase fitness and burn calories; also helps regulate insulin levels.
If your DH has run scientific studies showing his routines are superior to HIIT, he should publish. Until then, I'll keep recommending HIIT.
Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 30/01/2014 19:26

Thanks, Toffee
