Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Thanks Toffee, I will stick with it.

zedzedzed · 30/01/2014 08:45

lady I'm new here too, but that sounds about right. There are fluctuations so best not to weigh to often...there should be a general downwards curve over a month say, but this is a long-term/forever lifestyle and you only have a stone to lose so it will be slow...slow but permanent I'm told!

You have to build up 3500 cal deficit in a week to lose just 1lb of fat...to check you're doing this you could put EVERYTHING you eat into an app like MFP for a week to make sure you're not over your TDEE (set MFP to maintain and sedentary (unless you're a gym bunny). Don't just pluck a low calorie intake out of the air, use the links at top of this thread to calculate your ACTUAL TDEE based on height/weight/age/activity etc.

Hope this helps...happy munching!

zedzedzed · 30/01/2014 08:46

*too often. ooops!

frenchfancy · 30/01/2014 08:50

LadyF It sounds perfectly normal. In general there is an average loss of 1lb per week, but the smaller you are the slower it can be.

My only comment would be that you don't seem to be eating much on NFDs. If you are at 1300/1500 and only occasionally over at weekends then you don't have much difference between NFDs and FDs. Have you worked out your TDEE (see OP for link). That is what you should be eating on NFDs maybe a little less on week days and a little more at weekends.

BsshBossh · 30/01/2014 09:04

FD check in here. Both DD and I are still ill and DH can't take time off work. Fortunately my lovely MIL is driving 3.5 hours from Shropshire to London to look after DD. DD adores her. I am so grateful I have a terrific MIL.

Ladyfarquhar · 30/01/2014 09:12

I have set my TDEE as 1500 as per calculator as I'm very much desk job at the moment. I am planning on stepping up my exercise to three times a week, I just manage a couple of pilates sessions at the moment.

Eatriskier · 30/01/2014 09:14

Oh no bssh - glad your mil rocks though. Hope you both get better soon.

A late night out in the rain seems to have brought my cold out to the front of things, combined with low b12 and whatever my thyroid is up to made it hard to get out of bed this morning. I have ds this am so I've had to force myself. I haven't gotten out of my Minnie mouse onesie pj's though. Meant to be fasting but playing it by ear. I only fancy crap and I don't want to eat that really. May eat something if the urge for anything remotely healthy hits.

Ladyfarquhar · 30/01/2014 09:18

Hi Eatriskier, can I ask how your thyroid affects your weigh tloss. I am currently on 125 thyroxine for underactive thyroid for over 10 years and seem pretty stable but I wonder what factor it has with TDEE and weight loss?

Eatriskier · 30/01/2014 09:36

lady I'm afraid I have no clue, this is the first time I've had issues and I'm waiting on the results still. Mine is suspected over active, symptoms only really started 2 months ago and I've been losing despite not creating much of a calorie deficit, but then I've always lost well on 5:2. Someone else here may know though.

zedzedzed · 30/01/2014 09:37

So lady with a weekly allowance of 10,500 cals and two 500 cal fast days, you'll only drop 2000 cals a week and as you need to drop 3,500cals to lose a whole1lb, you can see you're right on track! (4lb off then 2lb on= 2lb lost in 3wks! If you drop your TDEE too low to try to speed it up you may go into starvation mode...and also crave cheese freedom!).

Slow and steady I think/hope, it may take you 24wks to lose a stone at that rate,(unless you bump up the exercise too), which sounds a long time, but if it's gone forever never to return, and you still get to eat cake? Pretty good deal!

Baloostika · 30/01/2014 09:46

Bssh wishing u and ur lil girl quick recovery. My DS4 had malaria and typhoid last week and we spent two days in the hospital. Hospital stay is soooooooooo uncomfortable, anyways he's doing fine now. He also needs his adenoioids removed but I just noticed his breathing just got better, the best since I had him 2+ years ago. A miracle from God and I'm grateful though I'll still have him checked by an ENT doc.
*Mrs F my prayers are with ur family.

Ladyfarquhar · 30/01/2014 09:48

Great advice thanks everyone, I was a little disappointed this morning but I'm in it for the long haul so thanks.
Eatriskier, I hope you get a firm diagnosis soon, I remember feeling awful until my meds were sorted.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/01/2014 09:55

Lady, my DH has been on thyroxine for about 20 years at this point - AFAIK so long as the dose is correct it shouldn't really make any difference.

Jobyloo · 30/01/2014 10:01

What a fab MIL to drive all that way Bssh! Hope you and your little one feel better soon, same to you as well Eat and anyone else feeling under the weather!

FD here, not feeling too bad just about to go for a run. ZZZ interesting link about numbers, really makes you think doesn't it?

Hope you all have a great day fasting or non-fasting.

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 30/01/2014 10:05

Also a bit disappointed, weighed myself this morning and 0.5 of a pound off...its not official weigh day til Saturday and it's a fast day today but I know I'll be so tempted to 'blow it since it's not working anyway', need to stay on track

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 30/01/2014 10:31

Flowers for BsshMIL.

I am happy as got £8 for my 3 bags of clothes. Shame I then went to Tesco and spent £23 Hmm. Bought ingredients to make savoury rice for the kids, sushi and cheese strings for their packed lunch, salad for me, cheese for DH and I and raisin and chocolate shots for the kids.

Making cheese and grain cobb now. Had been looking forward to another fruity teacake but DD had had it so I am going to look at making my own as well as the cobb.

Cakeand Brew For Baloostika. That must have been terrifying Sad.

You rock the onesie Eatriskier Grin.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 30/01/2014 10:33

Stay on track IPoked, it will come good Brew.

devoncreamtea · 30/01/2014 10:57

Sorry to hear your news mrs f x

Sympathies with those who have plateaued or gained - I've been stuck at 10.8 - this morning was 10.10 after both fds. Might try a mini tomorrow and get back into the JM routine (hurt my knee so been having a break from it).

DH - who is a super fit chap (might even qualify as a big choc hunk ..!) is bringing me back a kettlebell tonight. If anyone is interested this is his website: www.joekelly.me he is a functional movement therapist. You'd think I'd be thinner really...!!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/01/2014 11:24

Wow Devon, looks like a useful chap to have around the house. Has he given you any advice re JM and the knees?

devoncreamtea · 30/01/2014 11:35

yes - mainly don't do it!! He thinks his approach is better than that 'old school' interval stuff like JM, but he isn't a SAHM with no time! I would love to do the strength training he does, but he needs to show me the ropes and he is too busy showing everyone else - so I miss out a bit. Hence the JM stuff, because I feel like I need to get on with it and DO something and it's 20 mins etc etc

He does do NK therapy with me which helps my wobbly pelvis (4 children...) and dodgy knee - so he does have his uses!!

devoncreamtea · 30/01/2014 11:41

He advised me to miss out the jumping. which I do but, then I don't have the cardio interval - which he would say was fine as I am not inactive in my normal day and heart rate doesn't need to be pounding to be valuable. So instead I repeat the interval just past (ie double strength/double abs)... although he hates the abs bit and says crunches are bad for mothers as they have usually lost deep core strength and need to separate the ribs and lengthen core, rather than contract it.
Basically he thinks we should all be swinging kettlebells and doing bodyweight strength training.

BsshBossh · 30/01/2014 11:43

Oh no Baloostika what a thing for you and your DS to go through. So glad he is feeling better.

Eatriskier so you're another poorly mum looking after a poorly DC. Not fun is it?

Just knowing my MIL is on the way has brightened both DD and me up considerably. Hopefully her presence will get DD's body into positive healing mode. My mum lives nearby and she's been to the shop for supplies for us but as she's not at all physically fit (she's a major reason why I decided to tackle my weight and my health as I didn't want to age as badly as she has) she's not able to physically help with DD.

Anyway, I am blessed with having both a lovely DM and DMIL.

Fasting fine so far. Can't face food anyway.

BsshBossh · 30/01/2014 11:45

Lady I've been on thyroxine since 2000 and it's never made any difference to how quickly/slowly I put on or lose weight. So long as the dosage is correct it shouldn't make any difference.

MrsFlorrick · 30/01/2014 12:05

ThanksThanks Everyone for kind wishes and prayers. Thanks

MIL and FIL seem to be taking it well but I'm worried about them coping once treatment starts.

I need to give DH a major kick up the arse to get him in gear to sort home help shopping delivers etc etc.

Bssh Family. Hope the bug passes v soon. Ugh for you all.
Same to all the others with the bug. Fingers crossed it passes soon.

We have spent the last 4 years trying to persuade MiL and FIL to move down here. We even offered to buy them a place near us. But they wouldn't hear of it and say they don't want to be a burden and want to go into a home when the time comes !!! SadSad

I could see this coming way off hence my best efforts to get them down near us.

Too late now. Won't be able to move them now that FIL is starting treatment.

DH is only child. FIL was an only. MIL has a sister but she is in hospital long term and almost died over Christmas and unlikely to be leaving hospital again. Sad So her DC can't help as they have their own to take care of.

MIL and FIL won't be entitled to anything from SS. I worked it all out this morning. They have too high a pension and savings before even going into investments etc. it's not a problem laying for home help, just a problem finding someone trustworthy.

FD here. I was Fd yesterday but it turned into a mini fast as I had a massive dinner and ate some if the fruit crumble I made for the DC. So another go at it today.

TalkinPeace · 30/01/2014 12:30

MrsF
Could you persuade your DH to get your inlaws into something like a Sunrise Senior Living : they are expensive BUT they handle everything and would mean that you and his parents could both live your lives almost normally but with much less worries ...

Bowel is at least one of the more operable : they just chop out the damaged section. Feel free to message or email.

FAsting today, sort of. But mainlining tea because its manky weather.
