Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Thanks everyone. Thanks

I'm sort of flapping around because I don't know what to do for the best.

I suppose the best is to wait until its staged so we know what the treatment is.

It's a logistical nightmare we've got on our hands now. DH is an only child. We're in London, they are in Scotland. MIL is blind to all intents and purposes (5% sight left due to gloucoma and wear a -19 prescription so blind really).
She can only manage because FIL is there. If FIL is out of action they can't manage at all.
DD is in school so I can't go up and stay and help. DHs job means he is only available at weekends and barely at that.

Crap. I am looking into home help so that we can hire someone to come in and help MIL immediately. Sad

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 14:51

I hope you are able to find help MrsF. Would it be easier for you to go to your MIL and spend the home help on emergency childcare to support your DH?

Eatriskier · 29/01/2014 15:15

((((((MrsF)))))

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2014 15:20

MrsF, based on DH's experience with his parents, find out what Social Services can do to help your parents before you try to deal with it yourself - if they think there is family willing and able to help, they are more likely to leave you to get on with it. Which is fair enough in one way but in retrospect DH wishes he'd appeared a bit less willing to drop everything and rush up and down the motorway.

Fillybuster · 29/01/2014 15:27

MrsFlorrick sending you lots of love. My DM was diagnosed with a particularly vicious and horrid cancer about 12 months ago, just after I'd started 5:2....I got amazing support on these boards (and they helped me maintain focus on FDs even when I was in 'sod it, what's the point' mode) - so stick at it, and vent here when you need to.

Handmini, I agree that being mindful is a good aim, but I've had similar FDs...I had one pre-xmas where my 500 cals was made up of 2 waitrose all butter mince pies, because that was what I wanted And the joy of this WoE is that it's completely ok to do that, if it works for you (although probably not too often Wink)

I normally hang out on the maintainers thread but I'm feeling a little emotional today so have come onto the main thread to share a few thoughts...I do hope you don't mind (will butt out again shortly!)

Today is my DC2s birthday. Last year I was just under a stone overweight - the same bloody stone I'd been carrying around for 2.5 years since DC3 arrived - and hating myself. Problem is was, I bloody love food and love cooking and it was only a stone (and not even quite that much), so I kept telling myself it wasn't really a problem, at the same time as hating myself for not being able to shift it.

Last January I started fasting. For the first 5 weeks there was absolutely no blinking change on the scales and I was really doubting whether this could possibly work. DH thought I was bonkers.

By April I had hit my initial target (half a stone off, back to nearly pre-baby weight). By June I was at pre-2nd baby. By August I was at pre-1st baby (only another 4lbs, but never thought I'd see that again!) and back in bikinis on holiday. Dh was delighted Grin

By end August, I was still the same weight, even after 10 days in Italy with ice cream, pizza and pasta every day Shock

By October I was a lb or so down, and last month I turned 40 and weighed less than when I turned 30 and when I got married a few years before that.

This WoE has given me back heaps of confidence and put me in control. I love being able to eat all the food I love, when I want to - and not having to feel guilty or 'wrong' about enjoying my food. But I also love the sense of being in control of my appetite, and of not having to eat because it's a meal time. Dh has gone from thinking the whole thing is barking mad to being hugely supportive because of how much happier I am - and loves that I no longer ever stress about 'not being allowed' to eat something.

So, for anyone who isn't sure (or who doesn't have much to lose so is lacking motivation), I'd say this WoE absolutely rocks....so give it a bash and stick at it! Good luck :)

BiscuitBribery · 29/01/2014 15:38

So sorry to hear that MrsF. Everything crossed for a good prognosis for him.
I just found this after a quick google which might be of some help: www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Health/Support-Social-Care/Support/Older-People/Free-Personal-Nursing-Care

BiscuitBribery · 29/01/2014 15:40

oops forgot to make it clicky

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2014 15:46

Lovely post Filly!

One bit resonated with something that occurred to me earlier today' not having to eat because it's a meal time' ... why does it seem to be laid down in stone that the Right Thing To Do is to have breakfast, lunch and dinner? T'was not ever thus! I was rather surprised when we visited Hampton Court last year to hear that in Tudor times the norm was two meals a day.

postmanpatscat · 29/01/2014 16:13

Just marking my place...I am MILES behind with you all! Might get to catch up at the weekend but you'll probably have filled this one up by then too!

Hugs to MrsF

craggyhollow · 29/01/2014 16:49

Argh! What's happened!

Was very hungry so had a bag of spinach (I luff spinach) and four leftover mushrooms wilted in a pan with a few shakes of soy sauce

Now feel horribly bloated Sad really swollen tummy, surely I can't be spinach intolerant?!

RavenousRunner · 29/01/2014 16:54

CraggyHollow Did you eat really quickly perhaps?

That said soy sauce always means an extra pound on the scales the next day for me - all that delicious salt...mmm salt.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2014 17:21

craggy I just googled 'spinach bloat' ... found this:

Spinach is high in dietary fiber; a cup of cooked spinach contains 6 g of fiber. Although your body needs fiber to promote proper digestion, eating too much fiber at once can contribute to stomach upset. You may experience gas, bloating and cramping after eating spinach. Eat a large amount of spinach all at once, and you may experience some diarrhea. If you have recently increased the fiber in your diet, your body will eventually adjust and you will experience less stomach pain as you continue to eat high-fiber foods. Try drinking a full glass of water every time you eat spinach to help your body better process the fiber.

I'd guess a whole bagful at once may not have been a good idea.

craggyhollow · 29/01/2014 17:35

Noooo

I always eat a whole bag Blush

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2014 17:53

Probably goes down better when not on a nearly empty stomach. (BTW, I think you should award yourself an NSV for only eating a couple of forkfuls of the eggy noodles. Dogs are so useful!)

Hope your DD isn't too bad?

RavenousRunner · 29/01/2014 18:04

We've had no power all day, which is very odd for central London. Luckily was out to dinner anyway, but poor DH and DS1 and 2 are having to bundle up. I told him to take them to a friend's house but he's optimistic they'll sort it (they've been working since midday...eek). I am panicking at the thought of not being able to charge my phone or boil the kettle. Nooooo!

craggyhollow · 29/01/2014 18:11

Not being able to charge my phone makes me panic

Yes that's a good point about eating spinach on an empty tum Sad

Ooh do you think I deserve a nsv for the noodles Grin yay I felt like a failure but I suppose I could have eaten the whole bowl

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 18:22

Needs must. Desperate measures. I know I have already gone over 500. I must have. DD is being a massive PITA but - NSV - I will not use those two things are reasons to eat the contents of the house. I can have them tomorrow Grin.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 18:22

are as

almostthereagain · 29/01/2014 18:50

Thinking of you mrs FSad

vvviola · 29/01/2014 19:00

Thinking of you MrsF

Meant to be a FD here today. Head cold has turned nasty - voice nearly gone, pounding head and feels like I'm swallowing razor blades. So while I may of necessity not eat too much today, I think actually fasting might not be the cleverest idea.

This really isn't going well. Hopefully when DD1 goes back to school next week maybe things will settle down a bit so I can actually manage 2 FDs in one week!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 19:14

Sympathies vvviola. I am already thinking about what I can eat tomorrow. I am annoyed about the wasted muffins though. I forgot to put them in the freezer so about 8 will go in the bin. I could try making a savoury bread and butter pudding with them I suppose .

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2014 19:18

Freeze the muffins anyway. They'll be fine if you warm them a bit when you thaw them - or maybe even toast them?

zedzedzed · 29/01/2014 19:25

mrs F I'm so sorry, that's utterly crap for you and your partner, not to mention your mil and of course the man himself. It's such a frightening time with a diagnosis given but no firm treatment plan and little knowledge about what to expect. My Aunt was diagnosed last week (2b cervical cancer, 3cm tumor) but she'll have to wait ages to have a consultation about her treatment (likely chemo). Although it's positive to know it was caught before it 'got out' or into lymph nodes etc, it's never good to be told you have the c word and people are so terrified of it they hide in corners and don't want to ask about it.

Chatting with a Mcmillan nurse on the phone really helped my cousin and I've been reading up on chemo a bit here from those undergoing it

www.whatnext.com/questions/best-advice-for-undergoing-chemo-cysplatin-i-have-cervical-cancer-stage-2b-any-support-would-be-amazing-thank-you-all

Hope your OH has good support all round to help him cope.

Thanks for diabetes ideas, extra sweet of you with all you have going on.

((((hugs)))) Thanks

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 19:38

I might Errol though it would have been better if I had frozen them on the day I made them. I am running down the freezer so there should be room. They weren't best ones so a bit like they will do to have with soup but aren't amazing.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 29/01/2014 19:56

mrsF so sorry about your FIL. Finding emergency care is hard when you live in the same town, London and Scotland will be tough. Wishing you the very best diagnosis for your FIL, hoping its an exceptionally slow growing cancer.

biscuits and grace well done on your scale victories.

I'm 100% recovered from the vomiting bug. Cooked a home made sticky toffee pudding. Made the mistake of checking the calorie content just after I ate it = 695 cals per portion Shock I know pudding is hardly a health food but I'm still shocked by just how many calories it has (and I had custard as well Blush)

Fast day tomorrow I think.
