Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Anyone have any idea of calories in small fish and small chips from chip shop? Estimates seem to vary from 600 to 1200 from the internet... (Obv, this is an nfd treat !)

hurryup · 29/01/2014 12:31

Can I join? Recently lost 9lbs in 4 days due to inadvertent fasting when under masses of stress and anxiety particularly bad. Now I'm starting to feel better and don't want to put it back on. I've enjoyed not over eating - last night had some chicken in white wine sauce and some green beans. Felt fab as was hungry before and comfortable afterwards and left my potato which is unheard of for me as was bought up to finish my plate...

craggyhollow · 29/01/2014 12:37

FD today. Finally back at work after days of ill kids. Tea and water so far. Really struggling Sad

frenchfancy · 29/01/2014 12:42

hurryup of course you can join. Sounds like you have already got over the first hurdle, the idea that you can not eat for a day and it won't kill you.

frenchfancy · 29/01/2014 12:43

zedzedzed I did think that 150 cals for a cupcake was a bit small. I looked up a recipe for lemon and poppy seed cupcakes (which for some reason sound healthy) and they are over 500 cals each Shock

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 12:52

I hope your day gets easier craggyhollow. I was meant to be fasting but decided to try for a slightly over day instead. Have had French Pea Soup, a home made tomato and cheese muffin and a piece of Hot Cheese Triangle. Hmm might be more than a bit over.

almostthereagain · 29/01/2014 13:04

Hi all
thanks to ELR I have been to get my bloods done this am, hope you're feeling better. Struggled with yesterdays fast as I was feeling so sorry for myself yet have had coffee only since 6pm last night & feel fine, even though I'm making red velvet cake! So yes to pp asking about NFD lack of appetite, it hits me & I sometimes feel sort of disappointed as I LOVE food & miss looking forward to next mealBlush but sometimes love the feeling of 'focus' & sometimes love that you REALLY enjoy something when you hit on what you really fancy, even if that is just a bowl of alpen.
My back has stopped going into spasm but is still sore so still no exercise for meSad
Good luck with the school run toffee! But seriously, poor you, horrid to feel so shaken.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 13:15

Thanks almostthereagain. I feel a bit teary at the moment and I think it must be more delayed reaction though I am also ovulating and that seems to be effecting me more. How is it that before I had children I never had a clue when I was ovulating and only had a day the week before I came on that I was a cow. Now I am a cow at the end of the AP and emotional when ovulating and know that I am Confused.

HandMini · 29/01/2014 13:16

HurryUp - well done on your potato refusal! Of course you should come and join, especially as this time fasting will be a positive thing for you rather than associated with anxiety.

I had a really "naughty" FD yesterday. Was feeling rubbish and having a shit day at work, so had a small KitKat and Diet Coke for breakfast, 3 WW choccie bics and cup of tea for lunch, bag of skinny popcorn and Diet Coke for supper!

I know, I know, not at all within the goals of eating mindfully, but I just NEEDED sweet stuff and I didn't want to mess up my FD. Does anyone else do FDs like that?

zedzedzed · 29/01/2014 13:19

Hi french have re-checked and actually baked again just now...it's the butter icing that causes the discrepancy, my recipe makes FAR too much for 12 cakes, so I have frozen the remainder.

It's 152 cals for the cupcake and 282 for a thickly butter-iced one...the 380cals is only if you ice them 3" thick!!!

Phew!

(btw if anyone's making them it's: 110g each of butter, castor sugar,self-raisng flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1tsp vanilla essence and 2 large eggs, divide into 12 silicone cups and bake at 170 for 15mins = 152cals per un-iced cupcake and 282 cals if iced with 200g icing sugar and 100g butter, serves 12)

Today's are salted and coffee-flavoured again as it was so yummy last time.

Eatriskier · 29/01/2014 13:27

bumble a standard small portion of chippy chips comes in just over 900 cals. Not sure about the fish element but they're usually fairly high too because of the batter. 400g is meant to be the standard size for chips btw.

RavenousRunner · 29/01/2014 13:30

Thank goodness for leftover FD discipline - had a smallish breakfast at 7, have been hungry for lunch since 12, but can't get out to get anything til the next piece of work is finished and approved. Starving!

Megrim · 29/01/2014 13:33

Just confirmed to myself that DS is definitely having a growth spurt - I refused to take lunch money up to school at break time (he forgot to take any with him) and told him to come home for lunch instead. Just watched him inhale a family sized pizza, a banana and a yoghurt, and he was still complaining that he's hungry.

Toffee, I must have missed the post about your accident - yesterday? Not surprising you're feeling wobbly about driving near it, hope you're OK and take care of yourself.

I'm Impressed by the people who don't want to eat on their NFDs. That hasn't happened to me yet. Don't know if it ever will, but here's hoping.

Biscuitbribery, congratulations on getting into the 13s. Sounds like the accident which left you standing on the scales was a good sort of accident. Wink

My LOF is going well so far. I've had about 20 calories worth of tea-with-a-little-splash-of-milk and no signs of an early weakening yet. [Waves to the other Wednesday fasters.]

MrsFlorrick · 29/01/2014 14:09

(((Toffee))). Hope you DC and car are ok! Horrible thing to happen.

Everyone else. Keep up the excellent work!!

Zedzed.
. I don't know to what extent an insulin dependent diabetic can practise fasting. We all fast to some extent over night when we don't eat.

Type 2 diabetes benefits hugely from fasting. But type 1s don't actually produce insulin at all hence the injections.

Perhaps a modified version? He would need to seek further advice.

He can def go low carb. That's excellent for Type 1 and 2. He may find that easier too. It should keep blood sugars very even so he could end up needing less insulin.

There are a few type 1s who have been on BIWIs low carb thread here on MN. May be worth a look if it turns out 5:2 isn't for him?

Cracked a filling at the weekend. Just been to have it replaced. Numb face Confused. Lucky it's a FD!! Wink

In turmoil here. FIL was diagnosed with bowel cancer yesterday. DH is beside himself. FIL is 83.

He has an mRI and CT to come next week to have it staged before a treatment plan is worked out. Sad

He had an endoscopy and what they "found" was 4 inches in sizes.
It doesn't look good does it?SadSad

Poor MiL is blind and relies on FIL. They live on Scotland so we are really far away. It's a nightmare and I've no idea what to do for the best. Sad

diabolo · 29/01/2014 14:17

I've been stuck on the same weight for a week now, despite 2 more FDs, yesterday I only had an omelette with peppers, mushrooms etc and loads of water. I was the same last year, got stuck at a certain weight for several weeks, then one day stepped on the scales and was 4lb down.

I'll keep plodding on, probably 4:3 to try and get it moving again.

diabolo · 29/01/2014 14:19

Sorry to hear your bad news MrsFlorrick.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 14:23

graceholl - Your driver has obviously been very lucky never to have had an accident himself as he clearly wouldn't have been such a nob about it if he had. No excuse though. The guy yesterday wasn't too bad given that I had no clue I had hit him. I thought he had reversed into me!

Thankfully MrsF the children weren't in the car. I would definitely have cried if they had have been. I was a bit teary as it was. I thought DH was going to be cross with me but I keep forgetting he isn't my ex and I am not married to a twat. My car seems fine thank goodness as I already scraped the wheel a few weeks ago. I was trying to get out of the way of someone quickly and thought my car would go on the kerb and I turn the wheel. It didn't and scraped all down the kerb instead.

So sorry you have had bad news with your FIL. I hope it turns out to be a false alarm.

Anyone else wanting to comfort eat? I feel like crying but I know eating anything at all won't make me feel better so I will waffle on on here with my usual rubbish and hope the feeling passes.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 14:24

diabolo - I got stuck for ages on the same weight give or talk a pound and then suddenly lost two. Keep the faith Smile.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2014 14:25

Oh MrsF, that's grim. Flowers

NFD but I missed breakfast, wasn't hungry (I did have a muffin at bedtime, the one I hadn't felt like having for afters at dinner) and then we went out for a walk and weren't back till lunchtime. NSV for my DH - the walk included going by the café in the park and he resisted stopping for tea because he knew he'd be tempted by cake.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 14:27

Sorry MrsF I reread your post and see your FIL has the diagnosis. I hope there is treatment he can have to recover from this.

craggyhollow · 29/01/2014 14:32

Thanks all. This thread is very cheering (apart from the ill dhs and car accidents Sad)

Just had to go and pick dd1 up from a sports match from school as she was feeling so poorly dizzy and headachey. When we got home she wanted her fave comfort food - wholewheat noodles with egg and soy sauce so I made it and then she couldn't face it. Ended up eating two huge forkfulls. Think that's about 100cals. The rest went in the dogs bowl
