Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Hey positively - I had a dream about terrible earrings last night - they were 5feet long and made to look like 'Tangled' style Disney hair - marketing opportunity?

But I know it's a typo Grin - see my post upthread to hopefulgum at Tue 28-Jan-14 22:01:59. Don't sweat it but cut right down today - it's all about balance. I often look at those extra calories as banked meals so the next day I skip breakfast and eat lighter generally.

bigchoc Cutting out sweeteners is something to aim for in the long term - many people don't know how they monkey around with your brain (and indeed quite possibly on the poisonous side). I'm not immune myself and do have a tub of options hot chocolate in the cupboard - but I rarely touch it now.

I also find the idea of adults drinking endless sweet drinks a bit odd - why is that condoned by society? The occasional one I don't object to, but litres and litres of soda baffles me.

Mind you, my tastes have changed so much I don't even like the tonic part of a G&T anymore Shock

Anyway - that Horizon episode as mentioned by FF should be good, do watch it if you can Fasters!

Betsy - Grin yes I meant eating not earring lol

Well I think my body needs a break I feel so bloated! I think I'll make a soup and try to eat that today and not much else! Although I don't want to eat too little as I have a fast day tomorrow! Confused

tiggermummy70 · 29/01/2014 08:27

Hi Everyone.
May I join you.
I have been trying to lose weight for few years. lost about 50lb then hit wall for year. put about 10-15lb back on in that time.
I am doing a research project for work which involves me following a vlcd for 8 weeks and then reintroducing meals over next 4. It is to help people with or at high risk of bowel cancer which my mum died of two years ago. Having read all about 5:2 this is way I want to go once project is finished. Husband is pre diabetic and I also think it could really help him.
I intend to lurk for next five weeks if you don't mind and jump in after that. I am on MFP rapidly approaching my 3 year anniversary. Smile [waves hello] Sorry for essay. Hope everyone has a good day

BetsyBell · 29/01/2014 08:35

Hi Tiggermummy, I think you'll like it here - it seems to suit people who have already changed their eating habits for the better so do feel free to just jump in anytime.

Which part of your research project are you currently on? I'm guessing the last week of vlcd? Sounds very interesting - keep us informed of the results.

Morning all and welcome to newcomers. Well done on the bun victory Doris! Toffee I hope you and the car are ok, often these things shake you more the next day. Hopeful you've been so good you're allowed a blip! Congrats to all oth successful fasters and NFDers whose names I've forgotten as it takes me so long to catch up (and to scroll back!)

Just curtailed my run, which started well but quickly turned into me trying to run into driving sleet. I'm just not that dedicated yet! Still, a short run is better than no run.

FD here today, NFD yesterday went well so I'm hopeful for a good one. Good luck everyone!

tiggermummy70 · 29/01/2014 09:10

Hi Betsy,
half way through week 3. Finding it very boring to be honest. Discovered Husband and I watch way too many food based programmes Blush
So trying to get Husband to start 5:2 now as he often goes all day without eating due to his job, and fingers crossed I can join in with him as I come off. I am only on 800cals /day and they don't factor in what you burn off so I am hoping the switch to fast day will be relatively smooth. I've lost about 12lb so far. another 12lb will put me at lowest weight in over 10 years and then plan on resetting goals from there. main thing is the body fat currently at 40%+Blush .....

zedzedzed · 29/01/2014 09:12

Just wanted to drop this question in just in case someone passes by who really knows this stuff, I need proper science though as it's pretty important.

My brother has type 1 insulin-dependant diabetes, (he's not genetically my brother btw, so I don't have extra diabetes risk) he is also quite overweight and in his mid 40s and I'm very concerned about his health as he seems uninterested/unable to lose weight, is there any way he could use IF to lose weight, bearing in mind the blood sugar issues involved in type 1 and the regular meals normally needed? No guessing please!

Thanks for reading. x

positively9something · 29/01/2014 09:15

It may be abit early in the morning for this type of question but I'm going to ask anyway. Wink

Does weetabix give anyone wind or bloated belly? I havnt had it for ages and love the mini chocolate weetabix but I think that's making me bloated.

It made me wonder if I'm intolerant to wheat?

tiggermummy70 · 29/01/2014 09:26

well done grace.

zed there is a forum on the official fastdiet website specifically for those fasting with medical conditions and one is diabetes, might find some useful info there as a few have type 1.

MelanieCheeks · 29/01/2014 09:52

Positively, I find that anything wheaty (or even carby) makes me bloat.

Bumblebeejumble · 29/01/2014 10:00

NFD, can have anything I want, but can't think of a single thing I want (and can be arsed to make)! Don't think this has happened to me before.

BiscuitBribery · 29/01/2014 10:05

Hi all! Way too much for me to catch up on properly so well done too everyone! Yes, literally everyone, you're all really motivational with how well you're doing Smile

FD yesterday went well, LOF (just water) until 6.30 when I had a lovely homemade, veg packed jalfrezi, I still felt stuffed going to bed!

I accidentally stood on the scales this morning and I'm into the 13stone zone! My first milestone reached, chuffed!

Eatriskier · 29/01/2014 10:12

postively weet a Bix doesn't agree with me either anymore and also sends me mentally hungry.

DorisAllTheDay · 29/01/2014 10:29

Thanks for explaining the LOF rules, breadandwine. I think I'll aim for a 24-hour version and see what happens. I've got some soup in for supper this evening if I really want to eat - but if things are going well I'll see whether I can make a 36-hour LOF. I woke up twice in the night feeling nauseous and gassy, so I could definitely do with some time to let my digestion catch up.

zed you are so right, I'm a bun junkie. In fact I'm a carb junkie, but buns are a particular weakness.

positively, I've just had three consecutive days like the one you've just had. I'm feeling surprisingly upbeat about it, though. I love the way everyone on this thread says there's no such thing as a fail, just a deferred success. I really think I'm seeing it that way for the first time in decades of yo-yo dieting. I've started the day looking forward to a successful LOF instead of beating myself up and feeling like a worthless human being for overeating. Hope you have a successful NFD today.

mscnile glad to be fasting with you again! And that's very impressive you actually got out to start your run in the driving sleet, even if you ended early.

Congratulations on your SV, grace.

Good luck to all today's fasters.

dines · 29/01/2014 10:31

hi, is it ok to rejoin this group? everyone seems to be doin so well. happy fastingGrin

mscnile · 29/01/2014 11:03

Welcome dines happy fasting!

Breadandwine · 29/01/2014 11:13

dines you never left!

Once you've joined - it's for life! Grin

tiggermummy love the joke in your name!

I often look at those extra calories as banked meals so the next day I skip breakfast and eat lighter generally.

I had a 'banked meal' this morning at about 12.45 - some left-over chilli and rice was calling to me from the hob.

So, no brekkie for me today! Smile

Slugsonmypeasgrr · 29/01/2014 11:17

Thanks for info! Seems much easier to calorie count pre prepared stuff than home made...

Am NFD Today but feeling hungry with a feeling I don't want to eat anything because nothing seems what I want... Can anyone else relate? Really weird!

Megrim · 29/01/2014 11:54

NFD here too, not overly hungry and can't decide what to eat either. Small bowl of Alpen and a coffee was the only thing that appealed. Don't think I'll be hungry for lunch though.

positively9something · 29/01/2014 11:55

Oh no I've really enjoyed the weetabix over the last few days I don't want to not have it again Hmm

Well I'm thinking I will fast today instead of tomorrow as my Bly needs a break!

I can relate to not knowing what to eat, when ur in full swing if 5/2 and happily loosening weight you become more aware of what your eating and I started to feel like I will only eat it of
It's "worth" the calories ie tasty and satisfying!

Unlike how I've been eating recently shoving food into my mouth lol

tiggermummy70 · 29/01/2014 12:10

Thanks breadandwine my name came about due to me liking tigger and then having a red headed daughter that can't sit still! Her nickname is weasel as she looked like a weasley from HP films.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 29/01/2014 12:22

Hello everyone.

Haven't heard from the man whose car I slightly dented yet. I phoned the insurers this morning and they will call him. I am allowed 2 accidents with no premiums rise so I will see what happens. I was a bit wobbly this morning especially when driving near the place in the rain and I still feel upset about it all.

BCF - I have posted a recipe for you. Hope it is right.

I have also posted a recipe for FD.

I am fasting today but will be slightly over as I am having home made soup and a savoury muffin. Baked fish and rice tonight. My tummy is actually gurgling so no way I am trying to fast until tonight with having to drive to school later and do not want a repeat of yesterday.

zedzedzed · 29/01/2014 12:24

Aaaaargh...my homemade cupcakes are actually 325 cals each, not 150...this is VERY bad as I ate several during my totm frenzy last week...I guess on those days I actually DID eat up to my TDEE!!!!

BEWARE! Put all recipes into MFP as similar things have wildly different cals!

Thanks for the diabetes answers, will check out that thread. Anyone else have info pleasedo let me know/message me if it's too dull/long for on here. Thanks a lot all. X
