Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I am currently doing 16:8 on (most) NFDs. On Tuesdays and Fridays I do the 'early shift' as I have a martial arts class in the evening - so my eating deadline is 4.30 today!

Had some Vogel toast with butter, marmite, avocado, tomato & pepper which was totally satisfying but had a sudden urge for something sweet. I chose dates, raisins and seeds. Now done and satiated (and hopefully fully fuelled up!)

Runner thanks for the advice. I love salad when it's warm! I'll try and remember myself saying that when it actually IS warm and I'm wanting to stuff my face with various ice creams and cold sugary drinks Blush

I have one of those Systema microwave soup mug things so could potentially be do-able with one hand. I split loads of biscuit crumbs on her little head the other day and felt so guilty... I suppose that's one way to guilt you out of eating all the biscuits.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 28/01/2014 16:56

Thanks Errol. I will bear that in mind. Usually the soup is ready long before I want to eat it so I will leave it in the pan to cook then blend and reheat when I want to have it.

BCF - Grin though my thread isn't getting much action so I aren't as good as I thought.

Bad afternoon for me Sad. Crashed the car a little bit. No idea how it happened which is worrying me to be honest. It is like I lost time. One minute I was stopped in traffic the next I had rolled into the guy in front. There is a little dent so I am worried how much it will cost to put right. TBH if it was me I wouldn't bother but it is his choice.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 28/01/2014 17:33

Just baked an actual invention of my own. Had to use the tinned tomatoes I had opened as I then discovered the chicken thighs were a bit iffy. I can't bear waste and couldn't find a bread recipe so I have made chopped tomato and red Leicester cheese muffins.

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 18:52

Managed to hold off until tea time and just made a kidney bean chilli with red onion and yellow pepper with rice for 484 cals! So that means with drinks today (1 coffee with milk this morning and a couple of black coffees) I've had 518 cals. The chilli is a massive portion so I'll be stuffed until bedtime. Hooray for getting through my first fast day Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 19:00

Oh well done felix, that sounds really good!

Bad luck toffee - it only takes a moment for crap like that to happen. The muffins sound yummy though.

I was going to have one of my apple muffins for afters but feel quite full from a serving of the butternut squash and chorizo stew (from the recipes thread) - which I had with some Parlick Fell sheeps milk cheese and a slice of wholemeal bread and butter (NFD luxury!). I forgot I was going to have a chili lime chicken drumstick too

Eatriskier · 28/01/2014 19:17

Thanks for all the wishes for DD. Its not been the best of birthdays. We've had weemagedon here again in all the excitement and DS decided vomitting was a perfect addition Confused

Desperate for my lovely roast beef I can smell now.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2014 19:21

i felt tempted to make that butternut and chorizo stew, as I love both ingredients and it seemed idiot BigChoc-proof. Just worried about the colour of stain on the ceiling.
Does it really taste good, Errol ? (stew, not ceiling)

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2014 19:24

Poor Eat
Wee and vomit would ruin my appetite, regardless of how good the roast beef smelt.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 19:24

I liked it, BC - my chorizo was rather mild so I added some smoked paprika too.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2014 19:26

Well done, Felix That FD is an excellent start.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2014 19:40

Sorry to hear about the accident, Toffee. That's the trouble with cars and heavy traffic; a moment's distraction and you find yourself coupling with someone's exhaust pipe.
^^

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 28/01/2014 20:00

That's just the thing, BCF, I have absolutely no memory of it [worried].

Bumblebeejumble · 28/01/2014 20:01

Was going for an LOF, but just cracked and had 2x toast with marmite. I like that you can change plans on this and not feel like you've fallen off the wagon. A 300-cal FD still counts as an FD, so I don't have to feel bad at all :) hope everyone else's FDs are going well.

Bumblebeejumble · 28/01/2014 20:02

toffee so many times I've got home and not remembered anything about the journey. Sometimes I think we just go on autopilot...glad no one was hurt, and the damage doesn't sound too awful?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 28/01/2014 20:03

felix that chili sounds great. Well done on your fast day.

errol that butternut squash stew sounds good. I think I need to check out the recipe thread.

toffee bad luck, we've all been there

eat poor you with the wee and puking.

I had a good sleep today with ds and am feeling tonnes better it seems to be a really short vomiting bug.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 28/01/2014 20:17

toffee and bumble I've done the autopilot thing. Set off for my GPs and suddenly found myself at the supermarket.

CinammonGirl · 28/01/2014 20:34

Wow this thread moves quick! FD here today and for the first time, I genuinely wasn't hungry all day! I had a cup of soup at about 3:30pm and before that just lots of water and coffee. Dinner was a baked chicken breast with roasted peppers and onions, asparagus, sugar snap peas and baby corn - couldn't finish it! Had a small lifestyle victory today - my friend brought over a lovely lemon cake today but I served some up for her and my DD without even thinking about it or longing for it because - I can have some tomorrow! Hope all of today's fasters have had a good day :)

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 28/01/2014 20:44

Bumblebeejumble - it is such a small dent but dh said he has done similar and it cost £1100 to fix Shock. I often think how did I get here but I actually feel like I blacked out as I have no idea what happened between me stopping and him then getting out of his car.

It has really shook me up and I am annoyed at myself for being so wet.

A friend has just texted me and is being full on and I just can't be bothered right now.

Bumblebeejumble · 28/01/2014 20:53

toffee gosh, that is a lot! Not surprised you're upset! Fingers crossed it come out a lot cheaper for you...

Eatriskier · 28/01/2014 21:02

Oh toffee that's not good. finger's crossed its a cheap one for you. I'm sure what you're feeling is just shock. hope you feel better about it soon Flowers

TalkinPeace · 28/01/2014 21:16

(((( Toffee)))) - do NOT let the insurerrs tak over : manage it all privately. Inform them but use your choice of garage etc because otherwise both you and the other driver will get their premiums bumped up.

Autopilot - everybody does it. I turned up a clients one day. Luckily she knew where I was meant to be and phoned ahead to say I'd be late Blush

CinammonGirl · 28/01/2014 21:19

Toffee just read about your crash, how scary for you. Hope you are aright Thanks

Dogmatix34 · 28/01/2014 21:24

Just checking into this thread which I have been lurking on for a month. Been doing 5:2 since January 1st and am actually weirdly enjoying it. Have lost about 8 lbs already. Finding soup for lunch, m and s count on us meal for dinner, black coffee and diet coke are getting me through. Will attempt more cooking when I get more used to things. I wanted to ask did people find weight loss quite sporadic ? I am finding it has been going up and then down again.

TalkinPeace · 28/01/2014 21:27

Dogmatix
weight fluctuates. It just does. Its the long term pattern that matters.
Mine changes by up to 3 lb during the week.
I just make sure I'm back on target by Friday morning.
And loss is not steady - its in fits and starts
