Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Cheshire and zed - yes it was hot. Why on earth does it not tell you this in the instructions? Thank you for telling me the best tip I have heard in a long time. I didn't bother blending it in the end. Am about to have it now. Have spent all morning cleaning DD's room - found a missing sock, a full set of clothes still in her back pack, a full bottle of water, a biscuit pot and a broken bag hidden plus too many Christmas treat wrappers. I will be having a word as I have also found an unacceptable amount of A4 white paper.

Just had a hot cheese triangle, yum. Soup now.. Mmmm, not bad to say I slightly burnt the onions. I found some HP fruity sauce when getting out the stock (had planned to make my own for a change but BoyCat was caught on the counter tucking into the chicken carcass!! SO I put a squirt of the sauce in and it adds an extra mmm to it. The soup is French Pea and under 200 calories per portion if iirc.

I weighed myself this morning. Bad idea. Says I am up 2lbs but I am not taking any notice. Will teach me to weigh when I am not meant too.

Eatriskier · 28/01/2014 13:21

Dd is 3 today Cake all round.

Both gms bought the same giant cake for her. I'm drowning in the calorie bomb. Came in at 900 for yesterday which is fine even with cake. So little cake for so many calories Sad Sad Sad

Hopefully dh will help out later with some of it.

BsshBossh · 28/01/2014 13:23

Happy birthday LittleMissEatRiskier Cake.

Megrim · 28/01/2014 13:25

Eatriskier you need to get a dog, preferably a Labrador for maximum effectiveness. Or a teenage boy. Either one will clear your house of any leftover food within a remarkably short space of time.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 28/01/2014 13:40

Thanks biscuits and mazzle I think it is going to be a short lived thing, I'm already feeling a bit better.

toffee I read your blender incident as your bladder leaked while cooking Grin I need to read posts properly

zed don't get disheartened with the jeans. I've convinced myself slow and steady weight loss is the best way.

Ooh happy birthday to littlemisseatriskier

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 14:28

Toffee - one thing you can do with soup you want to blend is to make it with minimal liquid then put cold liquid in just before you blend.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2014 14:53

Felix No need in 5:2 to phase out coffee or tea.
If you feel you must suffer pain, then give yourself a good whipping with some leather thongs instead.
Wink
Most of us drink loads of coffee, espresso and tea. Many of us also drink diet fizzy drinks and ignore Tip's disapproving posts re artificial sweeteners ^^

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2014 14:56

Happy birthday, dear LittleMissEatRiskier, happy birthday to youuuuu!
Cake + 3 candles

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 14:59

For some reason I thought I had to stop drinking coffee! I'm probably getting confused with one of the millions of 'diets' I've attempted in the past Grin Also good news re fizzy pop. I find it fills me up when I'm hungry, but I know it does have the opposite effect for other people.

Doing well so far. Only had a couple of black coffees and a load of water. Saving my cals for tea when DP gets home at 5 but not sure what to cook! I'm feeling positive as 2 days out of 7 is nothing really in the grand scheme of things Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2014 15:01

Felix 5 weeks after birth is awfully early to start fasting. At least start with 1000 calories, then gradually work your way down to 700 when you are used to FDs.
I won't give recipe advice, or Toffee really would have a leaky bladder - from laughing too hard. Others here can help, I think.
Old hands know that my attempts at cooking are normally scraped off the ceiling.
When you're ready though, I've loads of exercise advice.

TalkinPeace · 28/01/2014 15:02

Welcome back Dines I remember you from last year.

Felix tea and coffee are an absolute MUST for me, every day, especially fast days. Bigchoc and I shall agree to disagree about sweeteners but I'm right, they are the spawn of the devil

the main thing is to drink enough every day and especially on fast days
at least half a pint of water before every meal, a glass of water with every meal and on a fast day, at least a pint of water in place of every meal skipped
(that water can have tea / coffee / herbal tea / miso / bovril in it, but the quantity is important)

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 15:14

Bigchoc thank you, I was debating about starting 5:2 at all but I'm feeling back to 'normal' (whatever that is!) and was hoping to start at 700 and see how I get on. I'm going to listen to my body though and do what feels best. I just need to do something sooner rather than later as I'm slipping in to some very bad habits with always munching biscuits out of boredom!! I have about 5st to lose which is an awful lot so I don't want yo delay losing weight any longer. I've stopped bf too so don't feel like I particularly need any extra cals any more. I'm a total novice when it comes to exercise. I hate it with a passion Blush it's something I really need to start doing though because I am so unfit. No idea where to start though!

Peace I'm rubbish at drinking water but doing well so far. I used to have the reduced salt bullion if I fancied something warm so I've put it on my shopping list. More water will hopefully improve the state of my currently awful skin too Grin

zedzedzed · 28/01/2014 15:36

Hi felix if you're an exercise-phobe you could just try my patented 'Baby Ups' (lift baby above your head with both arms, making stupid faces, over and over until either your biceps are ripped or the baby pukes in your eye.
Wink
My baby's 6months old now and I've just started 5:2 a month ago to lose my 100lbs, so welcome...it's great here.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 15:39

Felix, I find it easier to drink warm water rather than cold on FDs (esp this time of year).

You've done IF before - what pattern of eating suited you - ie do you want ideas for breakfast/lunch/small dinner or are you a no brekki, very light or no lunch, decent dinner type of faster? That info might help with suggestions. Things that can be prepared and eaten one-handed perhaps...

As to exercise if you're a novice and hate it, the first thing I'd do if I had a small baby is get some sort of sling or front carrier and walk as often as the weather permits.

zedzedzed · 28/01/2014 15:42

yes, ditto the sling thing.

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 15:45

Zed that's brilliant. I remember my arms aching so badly when I was on the postnatal ward because I wasn't used to lifting and holding an 8lb baby over and over again. I'm such a weakling! They don't ache now so I must be doing something right Wink

Errol I find if I eat breakfast I end up being really hungry for the rest of the day, so I'm better off skipping it. Also I'm so busy sorting out dd in the morning that it's midday before I know it! I can usually cope with a very light lunch or tiny snacks through the day then an ok meal for dinner later on. DP can cook our tea so it's more food through the day that I need ideas with. We have just bought an ergobaby carrier that I'm itching to try out but the weather has been awful here recently so we haven't been out much Sad

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 15:50

Felix - good, that pattern is what a lot of us seem to end up with - I'm not going to be much use to you myself on this one because I get to dinner time with black coffee in the morning, a sachet of miso soup for lunch and a cup of tea or two in the afternoon (plus water of course). oh, one thing I sometimes have is a slice or two of ready-cooked chicken breast, I like sainsbos chili and lime at the moment.

zedzedzed · 28/01/2014 15:55

I put aside only 50 cals for the daytime felix (black coffee/herbals/ buttermint tea/occasional diet pop) as I understand snacking's mostly a bad idea if you're fasting...it makes me ravenous anyway...then I have a whole 400cals for dinner (beef/chicken/pork/prawn/salmon in some form with loads of veggies and salad or rice/cous-cous then a hot choc and biccie at bedtime).

Toddler dinner is hard though, but the rest of the day with 2 kids under 2 you keep pretty busy and don't notice.

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 15:56

Ready cooked chicken is a good idea. We sometimes get massive packs for cheap from Costco for DP dinner so I'll buy some. Where do you get the miso soup from? Can you get it from the supermarket? I love miso but only ever had it at yo sushi... I think things I can just grab and snack on through the day would be best.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 16:00

The sachets I get are available at asda and sainsbos (probably elsewhere) - they're only 19 cals each; some people use a jar of paste but I don't know what sort.

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 16:00

Zed your plan sounds good. I think having something substantial to look forward to in the evening makes a difference. I'll see if I can get some miso soup then save the rest for tea time!

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 16:01

Ace, I'm going to the big Asda near me on Friday so I'll look there Grin thank you for the suggestion!

RavenousRunner · 28/01/2014 16:08

Felix90 one of my favourites when it's warm is to make up a big salad with chopped cooked chicken (I like the Sainsburys 'chargrilled' one, though I'm sure it's never met a grill), lots of leaves, little tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, and a tiny sprinkle of mixed seeds for crunch - maybe a bit of avocado if I have the calories. I would often eat half of it for lunch, get bored of chewing, and then nibble the rest when I thought I couldn't bear not to eat.

I also like brown rice cakes/FinnCrisp with reduced fat red pepper hummus, the crunchiness makes me happy.

Of course when it's freezing salad sounds miserable and I just want soup (or that cheese toast someone was talking about), but that's not so good for eating whilst holding a baby. Both of my DSs had a lot of drinks/food spilt on their little heads whilst bfing.

I had some lovely soup for lunch, plus a biscuit afterwards, and immediately could think again which was a relief. My brain had curled up and died, I think through lack of fuel. Now I feel fine and not interested in eating everything in sight.
