Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Thanks mrsf I should've measured before I started as I know I'd be seeing improvements there.

I don't love this woe any less just for one too-early-try-on, but it's never fun NOT fitting into clothes; I get all wobbily lipped.

Oh grace poor you...you'll kick it's butt another day and you're still eating less than before I bet?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 10:14

Dines - going all day is a good (re)-start. Next FD make sure you've got something appropriate calories you really like to look forward to for your evening meal. Don't worry if you overshoot a bit while you're getting back into it.

RavenousRunner · 28/01/2014 10:14

Attempting an FD today, though aiming for about 900 calories. Stonking cold, way too much work to do, DS1 having school crisis - not sure how this is going to go. If I need to eat I will, but at the moment doing ok. Generally grumpy and miserable, but not actually hungry at the moment. Remembering now why I never lost the last 5 pounds I wanted to; at this weight unless I've overeaten the day before I find FDs a bit hard, and yesterday ended up pretty light/low carb. We'll see.

Zedzedzed I could NEVER have stuck with this without weighing myself! Sounds like you're doing great, and your posts have been so positive - you'll get there in the end. I still am surprised when I put on jeans that used to be too tight for comfort and are now too big and look ridiculous. But maybe a weigh in wouldn't be a bad idea - if you can see and feel a noticeable difference, I expect they'll say something that makes you happy and keeps you inspired.

zedzedzed · 28/01/2014 10:16

Also, grace why not just call it a mini-fast, do another today and have a cake at the weekend as a reward for butt-kicking TWO fds AND a mini fast!

MrsFlorrick · 28/01/2014 10:21

Zedzed. I've spent many a wobbly lipped moment attempting to squeeze into my old wardrobe. It is hard.

That said you stick with this and th NSV come hard and fast honestly!

Other than jeans is there a top or something in your wardrobe you can try? You may have lost around arms and top of you tummy rather than your bottom half?

I found the jeans were the very last things to fit when going down a size. Literally everything else would fit way before hand.

Do try another item of clothing on for a NSV. Grin

CheshireSplat · 28/01/2014 10:21

Hi dines. There are loads of new people on the thread (I'm on week 4). When you have a spare few hours (?!) read back through it and you'll see people who are on first FD, in first month and those who have been doing it for years.

I'm asking for a big kick from you old-timers. I know this is a WOE for ever but I'm a bit frustrated that I've lost 3lb only after 7 FDs. I know I'm being unrealistic and shouldn't compare but when I've done WW and SW the initial losses have been so easy. I know I put that weight back on. I know this will help me eat when I'm hungry rather than because its mealtime. I know, I know, I know. I know that the calorie deficit should mean less that 1 lb a week loss so i am on track. My trousers are looser but I'm impatient, partly because I'm TTC so want this to shift soon as hopefully I'll have to stop soon.

Some kind words/motivation would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

MrsFlorrick · 28/01/2014 10:24

Cheshire. Well done on your loss and first fasts. Grin

How about joining some of us on the exercise thread for 5:2ers and doing some HIIT training? That will smack the fat where it hurts Grin

If you want a quicker result and to firm up, then this is they way to go.

SophieLeGiraffe · 28/01/2014 10:25

I started 5:2 in the new year. Monday and Wedneaday are my fast days and I find the relatively easy. But yesterday I fell off the wagon. Should I just do one day this week? Or shift the two days forward to today and Thursday? Or something else like 16:8 for a few days to even it out?

I don't weigh myself but I feel less puffy than I did so I want to continue and not feel like I've failed but it seems to me this woe means you can easily fall off and them get back on track?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 10:26

almost - here's how I calculated my ideal weight, assuming middle of the healthy BMI.

BMI = weight(kg)/(height(m)squared ; for imperial units (lb, inches)multiply by 703.

Midrange BMI is 21.75 so weight = 21.75x heightxheight/703

So for you 21.75x64x64/703 = 125.27lb , 8st 13

MrsFlorrick · 28/01/2014 10:32

Sophie. Yes. You can fall off anytime and restart immediately without much damage having been done at all.

There is no way to really fail at this. Even if a FD isn't going to plan, have a mini fast or scrap it and do it tomorrow instead. Grin

Don't worry. It's as simple as that. It's not like low carb/Atkins where you need to get back into ketosis again.

No special food, no special books and no cutting out of food groups. And no falling off any wagons either. Just restart the moment after you ate the extra cake or whatever.

If you really eat a lot one day then add an extra FD or mini fast for the week.

If you don't feel well, very tired, other life problems, have two mini fasts instead if you feel you can't cope.
I've done that when its been tough.

You still achieved a deficit not a massive one but it will help you maintain rather than gain for that week.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 28/01/2014 10:43

Morning all.

Nothing going quite to plan. Slightly burnt the onions I was frying for my soup as I started folding laundry upstairs and forgot about them. Then my blender leaked when I was putting soup in it to liquidise. I have no idea why as I checked the instructions, it also happens when I liquidise soup in the food processor bit. No idea why and it is annoying as I want this soup blended. Some soups I don't blend at all and some I do partly as I like the odd lump.

Rang vet to order cat biscuits. Asked for a bigger bag. That is £66 I will be forking out so not at all wise of BoyCat to jump on my while I was on the phone....Little sod has been beaten up GirlCat a lot today. I do not like it. I threw some balls towards him to make him use energy more nicely. Both cats ate now out and are not allowed in the kitchen unless I have checked their mouths first.

zedzedzed · 28/01/2014 10:46

Thanks ravenous I have been feeling so positive as this suits me so well and it's the first woe where I'm able to imagine eating like this forever as I don't feel deprived at all; there's no dread in eating like this for the rest of my eating life.

Just should've waited a while longer till I tried on!

I may weigh on Friday, just to see where I am 8 FDs and 4wks of mindful munching later...secretly/stupidly hoping I may have to lower my TDEE as I've lost about 100lbs miraculously...but expecting about 6-8lbs as I've not cheated or gone over or very close to my TDEE once.

Thanks for all the support peeps. mrs F as I'm in temp accommodation waiting to move into our new house I have NO clothes/tops unpacked, only maternity clothes, size 20 now FAR too big, and size 18s, getting baggy. I KNOW I'm fading away, my boots and baggy leggings tell me that! I just wanna wear my jeans and I am not buying size 18 jeans now as I know they'll be too big. I'm an inbetween-er.

I share your frustration Zed, I'm between sizes at the moment, I can take jeans off and on without undoing the button but the size down will still be too small. I'm holding off buying the next size because I know I'll feel gutted if they don't fit! It's impossible to not get your hopes up. ))hugs(( to you, you're doing amazingly well.

Sounds good Grace mmm Doritos

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 11:26

Hi everyone. I am starting today so it's officially my first fast day! Have no idea about what I'm going to eat today as I need to do a food shop (so probably a good thing I've not got much in!) so I've had water and a black coffee so far. I'm going to try and phase out the caffeine if I can but I think it's the only thing that will get me through the first few fast days at the moment so I'm not going to worry about it too much.

Just saying hello anyway Grin

frenchfancy · 28/01/2014 11:44

cheshire 3lbs in 7 fasts is really not bad. I know it isn't WW or SW, but then on 5:2 you get 5 normal eating days. 5 days of eating the things you like. 1lb a week would give you a 2 stone weight loss in just over 6 months. So by August you could be 2 stone lighter. And you get to eat pie. (I'm just waiting for my pie to heat up in the oven Grin )

Breadandwine · 28/01/2014 11:52

For all those who want an arse-kicking (I refuse to use that Americanism, butt! I just does not do it for me.):

This is the only WOL (diet, if you must) that will help you avoid (or, in some cases, delay):
Diabetes Type 2
Heart disease
Alzheimer's
Cancer

…amongst other things.

It may also extend your life. And you'll avoid having to take tablets for the rest of your life.

Plus you're saving money by buying less food - and you feel more in control of your weight - and of your life!

I could on, but I won't Grin

Except to say that everyone of us on these threads started out with doubt and hesitation. Have a look back at some of the early threads - they're a good read if nothing else.

There, that feels better, doesn't it?

About BMI. I've just lowered mine from 20.47 to 20.0 - by the simple expedient of gaining an inch in height. How I did this is all on BCF'S wonderful Exercise thread, but basically, all I did was hang from an overhead bar, and it took me about 7 weeks to gain that inch.

It'll only work, I suspect, for those of you who've already lost a bit of height. But for you youngsters, it probably means you'll never shrink in height as you age.

Now, CLENCH! (especially you, BetsyB!)

SophieLeGiraffe · 28/01/2014 11:57

Ok so I'm firmly on with a fast day today then. Just discovered the sandwich shop is doing my fave soup today at 189 cals in large size without the garnish so looking forward to that.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/01/2014 12:04

Alibaba Don't try to FD when your innards are so skewy.
After 2 weeks you may be deficient in iron and your body needs all possible nutrients to cope with the extra stress.
Just cut out junk and eat to TDEE until you are ok again.

If you feel strong enough and the weather is ok, then take a walk outside every couple of days. No other exercise until you regain your full strength, which may be a few days after everything else gets back to normal.

Fingers crossed you are back to normal very soon

almostthereagain · 28/01/2014 12:07

Thanks mrs F & errol Looks like I've got more to lose than I thought!
Feeling sorry for myself with sore back & even though I'm not hungry I want mashed potatoes, leek & potato soup or tinned tomato Sad
Looks like I'm a comfort eater & I never knew!
Yay sophie & welcome felix

Megrim · 28/01/2014 12:20

I tried on some of my older clothes yesterday - jeans still a little tight but a favorite top that I never thought I'd get back into (in fact I had put it in the charity bag and DH rescued it) now fits. So I guess I am losing more rapidly on my top half than on the bottom, although my bum is definitely smaller and I have hip bones again!

NFD here, DS2 at home with a sore stomach so am making him ginger cake because I love ginger cake to help settle his tum.

CheshireSplat · 28/01/2014 12:22

Mrs F good idea. I shall come and lurk on the exercise thread.

French thanks. I know its fine, I'm just being impatient. And you are right - the 5 days are good and what makes it maintainable.

Toffee I find that my food processor/blender always leaks when the soup is hot but not when it has cooled. Was yours hot?

zedzedzed · 28/01/2014 12:31

yes toffee mine leaks too, but only when hot, wait till it has cooled or get a stick blender...they're great for a quick whizz right there in the pot, and easier to clean than a blender.

Felix90 · 28/01/2014 12:55

I've read the thread with lots of recipe ideas on which is great, but I'm looking for ideas for easy things I can eat on fast days, if anyone can help? I have a 5 week old baby so struggle to prepare and cook anything that's not quick as she loves to start crying as soon as I start cooking my dinner!

I've done IF before and on a fast day when I was working, I'd have things like tins of low cal soup, low cal jelly pots, light cheese triangles on crispbread things or with carrot/celery sticks, but just looking for some new ideas if anyone has any?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 13:05

After a good FD yesterday, didn't feel hungry this morning - so lots of tea and one coffee, then had breakfast at midday - my normal fruit, yog, nuts and seeds because I fancied it more than lunch-type things.
