Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

FD yesterday . Ooof !
First time I came in way below the 500 cals mark Smile. Had a vegetable curry and have discovered cauliflower rice . Excellent !
And this morning I'm down to 71,5 kilos so I've lost a pound . That's good news . Slowly, slowly here ...

To all you others, I wish you a good start to the day. To the fasters - remember to keep drinking. I'm always amazed how thirsty I am on FDs.

Thanks, much better sleep last night thankfully! NFD here but may do 16:8 as I have a busy day ahead so unlikely to be eating until lunch time

Good luck to all tuesday fasters Smile

Dilidali · 28/01/2014 06:45

First FD successfully finished. Thank you for all your encouragement :). I was at home, let's see what happens when I am at work and try and fast.

vvviola, what's in the muffins, if no egg, no dairy?

Rosie70 · 28/01/2014 07:22

Hello, I haven't posted here before but I could really do with some help please! I've been following 5:2 since 1 Jan, and yesterday was my 8th fast day of 500 cals. But I have woken up with an awful headache and quite nauseous. This has now happened 4 or 5 times after fast days. I assumed it was dehydration but no mention of nausea as a symptom on the NHS website. I have had paracetamol and dioralyte and feeling a little better but still rough. On fast days I've been sticking mainly to protein and veggies. Any suggestions because I really don't want to give up but can't face feeling this rubbish again. Thanks

vvviola · 28/01/2014 07:23

Coming to the end of FD - probably closer to 600 calories, but I'm happy with that. Resisted bread, and fried rice at dinner.

My difficult part seems to be lunch time. I'm surprising myself at being able to defer snacks/treats, but I'm struggling with not having enough stuff to eat at lunch time. The soup is great, but I miss the toast/sandwich/crackers I would usually have. I had cucumber with it today and it was a little better, but still didn't feel like 'enough'. I guess I need something v low calorie but very chewy Grin

Dilidali - the muffins were: flour, sugar, a few tbsp of oil, oat milk, baking powder and blueberries (don't think I've missed anything there). I also do a great one with crushed pineapple, carrots and the tiniest bit of oil. You'd never realise it had no dairy or egg.

MelanieCheeks · 28/01/2014 07:48

Rosie, I often wake up after a FD feeling a bit groggy, and occasionally slightly nauseous. This usually passes afer a good mug of tea and some water.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 28/01/2014 08:02

Urgh looks like I'll be having another fast day today. I've caught a vomiting bug Sad

turkeybaby · 28/01/2014 08:04

rosie i feel like that after my fast days - like a hangover. I've done 5 FD now and trying to increase my liquid intake each time.

Southeastdweller · 28/01/2014 08:12

Hi Rosie. Do you think you're drinking enough water?

BetsyBell · 28/01/2014 08:13

Rosie Sounds like dehydration. Make sure you're drinking loads on your fast day and as much water as possible first thing when you wake up. After a year of 5:2 that can happen to me too but I know it's directly related to fluid intake.

Some suggest drinking a pint of water before bed - might be worth a try? I can't as my bladder likes to wake me up but I drink plenty in the day and early evening and then when I get up.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2014 08:19

positively - I'm 5'1", 59 kg and I'm 53 which doesn't help. Light exercise gets me to 1557; moderate makes it 1775 which gives me a significant amount more leeway. Do the calculations at the different levels for yourself and then work out what exercise/activity you can realistically fit into your life.

Anyway, enough of the lecture, I need to go and shred!

BetsyBell · 28/01/2014 08:20

Well done dilidali! At home is often harder (unless you work around food of course!) so just keep busy and say no to offers of biscuits/cakes. It's often easier to resist that stuff on a fast day.

vvviola I tend to go for crunchy and hard to eat salad items (1 carrot chopped up goes an awfully long way) or a nice spicy, veg laden chunky soup for lunch if I'm at work, then work keeps me busy enough not to think about food any more! If I'm at home then I skip lunch altogether.

Some suggest drinking a pint of water before bed

how about a pint about 2 hours before bed and then just a glassful at bedtime?

BetsyBell · 28/01/2014 08:28

Errol I have to do this 3 hours before bed unless I want to wake up several times in the night! I sip a bit at bedtime.

My bladder is really annoying though.

hi everyone I restarted this woe yesterday. I did it the same time last year.. well I went all day doin,then.... I ordered a take away. I feel like I let myself down cus I done so well and then messed it all up. I need to get some motivation to complete day.

BiscuitBribery · 28/01/2014 09:13

Oh no When, how awful! Hope it passes quickly Thanks

FD for me today, I'm now one of the weirdos that looks forward to them! I find them really cleansing.

dines · 28/01/2014 09:13

has anyone else just started?

MazzleDazzle · 28/01/2014 09:19

Poor WhenSheWasBad! I hope it's short-lived Sad.

Thanks for the well wishes folks! Feel a lot better today. My kids seem to have escaped it, thankfully, and DH is away for a fortnight, so not much chance of him catching it! On the plus side, as someone said, it certainly hasn't done my weight loss any harm! Will take is easy food wise today though, since my tummy is still recovering.

I cannot believe I didn't know green tea had caffeine in it! I'm a label reading fanatic! Raided my cupboards and nowhere on any of my tea boxes does it tell you the caffeine content Confused.

zedzedzed · 28/01/2014 09:27

Woke up ravenous, determined to have that bloomin toast and cheese... not hungry yet...wtf?! Will have it mid morning/lunch I think, maybe make today a 16:8 day.

My clothes are starting to look a bit baggy already,so much so that I decided to try on Jeans Number One(size 16) Nope. Not yet. Boooooooo. I feel so much slimmer I was sure they'd slide on easy-peasy...and they did at least go on this time, so that's a NSV I think, but they were NOT ready to be buttoned yet. I'm trying to take the positive but secretly feeling a little crushed. I think it's just the realisation that although I've definitely made a good start, this is a long, slow road and I was fatter than I knew!

I may have to do my first weigh in this week though as I need a reality check or it'll be crushing when it's 'only' 8lbs after 8wks or something even though it already feels like a stone has gone in week 4. I think I've gotta find out so my expectations stay sensible.

Hope all you FD-ers are powering through and the NFD peeps are planning something yummy for dinner. And hope all the pukers are on the mend and resting up.

almostthereagain · 28/01/2014 09:46

Hi everyone. FD here for me today, trying to stay positive after yesterdays rubbish weigh in & going over TDEE again. It can't possibly all be fat resettled so quickly, \7 jeans do feel looser despite being back to original weight. Will find it v hard to resist a post F weigh in tomorrow, don't know how you're managing that discipline zed
Fingers xed for a loss for you hopeful Smile

almostthereagain · 28/01/2014 09:48

mrs F if you have a spare minute could you work out my ideal weight?
Am 5.4, 42 & wrist measures 6" is that all you need? TIA

Hi Almost. You're a medium frame Grin at the lower end of medium. Bordering on small.

MrsFlorrick · 28/01/2014 10:07

Zedzed. Sad Don't feel sad. (((Hugs)))

I've been there so many times over the last few years.

As you said they go on even if they don't fully fit. They very soon will.

It will all happen so much quicker than you can imagine. And you'll have sudden NSV where you suddenly fit into clothes you didn't even think you could get on.

Chin up. You've only just started my friend.

We are all here for handholding if needed. Brew
