Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

vvviola mine too ! Less time cooking = more time for cleaning Smile

MelanieCheeks · 27/01/2014 20:55

My dinner tonight, featuring celeriac mash! Will pop this on the recipes thread too.

Breadandwine · 27/01/2014 20:56

Fasted today ….

24 hours on water and black coffee.

Did intend to have a VLcal dinner, but decided it should be a chilli, so r-k beans were included. With this I had a large microwaved potato - 350 cals altogether. As is my wont when I don't have a low cal meal, I ate up to my 600 cals: 10cal jelly (so far so good) with half a banana and soya cream. This left me with 150 cals - 2.5 squares of chilli choc sorted that out!

And now I'm stuffed! Grin

Today was easy - but now I've got 6 NFDs, not so easy!

Congrats to you and yours, Fox! You will pop in from time to time to keep us up to date, won't you? Smile

mummyof2girlsx · 27/01/2014 21:19

somewherebecomingrain yes still lurking (and occasionally posting/being ignored lol). I hope the house move went well!

I have 2 poorly children so got hardly any sleep last night, had to arrange last minute child care today as they were both off school and DH and I both in work and I somehow still managed to fast today.....early night now looking forward to tomorrows NFD Grin

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 27/01/2014 21:28

tip the curry sounds good. Thankfully my dh is a crap cook so no temptation from his cooking

Ignores mummy Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 21:29

Any werewolf fans? Or Madonna or Demi Moore fans?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 27/01/2014 21:30

mummy only joking.

Wow you have a lot on your plate, no sleep, emergency child care and a fast day. Well done.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 27/01/2014 21:35

Werewolf diet Hmm. I love that they point out there is no scientific evidence for it.

I bet adding a liquid only day into your 5:2 diet once every month would help though.

MorrisZapp · 27/01/2014 21:50

I'm down one pound (yay!) but I arsed up my FD today. Mid afternoon I broke and ate a banana and a Kellogg's multigrain bar. I felt I had to as I was actually shaking a bit.

Had a very sensible dinner, so I think I've managed a traditional 'diet day' of around 1200 cals. I feel a wee bit hungry now but nowt scary.

On the plus side, I'm really enjoying having Starbucks porridge as a lunch on FDs and am going to try it on NFDs too. Quite a few FD habits are crossing over which is good.

zedzedzed · 27/01/2014 22:01

So sorry for all the poorly folk and sick kids. Boooo, it's the season for it.

And yes, whoever asked, it's me who's not weighing at all for at least a month.

So...1st FD of the week done, clear liquids only till 8pm, not too hard today as I was busy, and then yum. 458 cals of gingery-sweet soy salmon, spiced cous-cous and sprouting salad with some tangy blue cheese. Enough left for a hot choc at bedtime.

NFD tomorrow...am planning CHEESE ON BLOODY TOAST! Still cross I had to look at that today.

Lamb steak with rosemary potatoes and garlicky green beans tomorrow night...also noticed I still have some old salted caramel in fridge so may attempt some kind of salty cookie.

Well done all Fd-ers and Tuesday peeps good luck to you, we empty-belly salute you. XX

PS toffee sorry about your Sadistic Cats...maybe the mice were evil and had it coming though...Serial Murderer Mice.

Peplum41 · 27/01/2014 22:05

I think mummyxx has gone to bed. Either that or she is ignoring us for a change. Well done despite those poorly girls.

bigchoc I did it! I was watching the timer on the rower, and each time it got to 40 seconds I went berserk for 20 seconds until the minute finished. It's much more fun than just plodding along because the recovery time zips by, as does the high intensity bit, so the whole thing goes faster.

It must be the exercise and the fasting because I got some good old school euphoria in the shower when Vogue came on the radio. I like an easy fast.

Peplum41 · 27/01/2014 22:15

zed you know how much you're looking forward to that cheese on toast....

Well someone at work showed me a picture on her phone of brownies made with cadburys creme eggs!!

I must have that recipe.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 22:34

'Werewolf diet': You can also lose up to 6lbs during this single day of fasting due to the lost water.’

uh.... I thought a lot of women gain and lose that sort of amount on a monthly basis without any sort of LOF. Hmm Though maybe not ones of Madonna's vintage...

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 27/01/2014 22:35

zed I may have to have cheese on toast tomorrow too. Well done on staying off the scales.

peplum Ive seen that picture, they look amazing. Mummy probably has gone to bed, she will be gutted she missed the attention.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 22:36

Well done with the HIIT, Peplum !!!
Yes, I also find it far more enjoyable than steady state, which I thankfully stopped doing.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 22:41

I did something like that on our rower yesterday, but 30sec:1min. I find it takes a few seconds to get it up to the max, probably because its got a big flywheel. Might try 20:40 secs next time.

Should get off to bed soon.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 22:47

Errol TDEE 1359 !!!!
Shock Shock Shock
You win the prize for lowest TDEE on this thread with a pulse. Um, just to reassure us, please check you do have a pulse.
I was surprised enough at Tip's 1500 TDEE. btw: do you have her sub-zero blood pressure ?
Your TDEE is astonishing - not much more than half mine, but I'm 57 yrs, 5'3", 9 stone. Shows the individual variation between vaguely similar sizes.

You really have formidable self-discipline to lose with your TDEE. I notice that your exercise is imtense for your fitness level and you really keep working. That's got to be your secret. VERY well done
You'll be our poster girl for those who claim 5:2 won't work for very low TDEE.
Wink
In fact 5:2 is your best possible WOL: on daily CR you would have to stick to about 1000 cals for ever and ever amen. Not a life.

positive Learn from the DragonLady (and I don't mean me)

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 23:00

You really have formidable self-discipline to lose with your TDEE
Or just a bit bloody-minded Grin

on daily CR you would have to stick to about 1000 cals for ever and ever amen. Not a life

Yes, that's one of the reasons I started 5:2 (the other being one iffy home blood sugar test) - I was sick of having to 'watch what I eat' every bloody day and still see the scales edge up. The exercise was prompted more by being fed up of having weak arms, but it must make a significant difference to TDEE too.

hopefulgum · 27/01/2014 23:19

The werewolf diet! Ha ha! At first I thought it meant that a werewolf would bite off your arm or something, then you'd weigh a whole lot less! I can believe that you could lose water due to gravitational pull from the moon (just watch the tides...) Hmm However, wouldn't you just gain it all back if it is water weight that you lose???

Anyway, I am sticking with 5:2 as it is really starting to become part of my routine and I love the flexibility of it. I had another FD yesterday, and it wasn't too bad at all. I made some vegie soup: parsnips, courgettes, miracle noodles and home made stock, also some miracle noodles. Very filling and satisfying. And there was enough to freeze 4 portions for other fast days. Then I made a Lemon and ginger chicken stir fry. So yummy and only 260 calories per serve, so I also had a half cup of rice. I was a bit hungry at bedtime, and I wonder if it is because I had the rice. Perhaps best to leave out the carbs and have a bit more stir-fry on FDs. I went to bed and slept ok, apart from the 1 am wake-up, but was able to go back to sleep after a glass of water.

I have been invited out to lunch today, so won't be eating much til then. However I did finish off the calfoutis for breakfast, but it's only about 250 cals, so I can live with that. That leaves me about 1450 for the rest of the day, and I've already worked out that dinner is 535 ( a pasta bake that DD is making), so hoping that 900 is enough for lunch? It should be shouldn't it? especially if I skip dessert.

Sorry to hear some people are feeling poorly. I hope you feel better soon.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/01/2014 23:23

Hi Everyone - really struggling to keep up with the thread!

Today was meant to be a FD, and I did up until 1pm and then I had to eat, I was dizzy and shaking.
My period has been going on for nearly two weeks which never happens to me :( I'm going to the GP about it tomorrow, and she has said she will do an internal :( :(
So all in all I think I've done pretty well to come in 600 under TDEE.

BigChoc I've been reading your exercise thread - once I've found out what is going on with my innards then I'll be joining you. I need to be stronger and I've let it slip over the last year. My two year old will be able to out-wrestle me soon Grin

MrsFlorrick · 27/01/2014 23:24

Wow on the low TDEEs. My BMR is higher than that.

Just goes to
Show how different we all are. And that's important to remember in this world where everything is increasingly tailored to One Size Fits All.

FD today. Very successful. I low carbed too. Less than 15g of carb. Should keep my metabolism guessing Grin
I did over 5 hours of cleaning today. Perhaps DH was right to fire the cleaner. House was filthy ShockShock

Knackered now. In bed watching Nashville on 4OD. Blush

positively9something · 27/01/2014 23:51

Bigchoc - please feel
Free tomahawk away at any time Wink I need someone to nag at me and keep me on track Grin

I will look into the exercise you suggested as I have never heard of it before. And as you explained the maths bit I can see why I'm maintaining! Hmm

positively9something · 27/01/2014 23:52

Errol - wow that is low Shock what is your current weight and height?

positively9something · 28/01/2014 00:00

Oh no I got it wrong it's 1528 calories I might calculate it again Hmm

vvviola · 28/01/2014 00:04

The muffins were technically baked for the kids (dairy and egg free for DD2 and an experiment before back to school next week), so I will just have to keep reminding myself that they aren't for me anyway Grin

DD1 is about to be collected to go to the movies with a friend and I'm hoping that I might manage to persuade DD2 to nap (unlikely). And then I shall have my chicken noodle soup for lunch and try to resist the bread...
