Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Keep going all FD ppl, we'll do this!

4 hours and i'll have had my dinner and be asleep! Surely i can survive!

Not2bObvious · 27/01/2014 18:42

Hello all. Kept my appointment this morning with JM (25 mins boxing, easy in comparison to banish fat one!) it was a struggle to get up at 6am but I'm proud I managed it. FD has gone well but I'm afraid I'm a bit over 700, but it's still good enough.
Zzz glad to hear you have loose boots! That's a great nsv. I'd kill for that sambo, you did well grasshopperWink Is it yourself that's not been weighing in for the month? I'm working on sticking to a once a week, the best technique I've found is to drink a big glass of water the minute I wake - there's no way I'd step on the scales, like it's the glass of water I have to worry about not the choc/crisps/wine

vvviola · 27/01/2014 18:50

Starting a FD here. Thankfully DH has gone into the office today, so there'll be no impromptu lunches to spoil my plans!

I have a nasty head cold which is not a problem in one way as my appetite is always smaller when I have a cold - but the one problem is that my usual cure is a mug full of hot orange (freshly squeezed orange juice with hot water) - which seems to be coming in at about 60 cal a go, which would eat into my allowance pretty quickly.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 18:50

Green tea is caffeine free, isn't it?
No! It's quite variable depending on the brand - some is lower than black tea, some is higher - this has some info.

Anyhow - just had dinner. Not what I'd planned, because DH had bought some M&S meals and didn't like the one he'd heated up so as it was within my budget I ate it, with some tenderstem broccoli and a bowl of salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and black pepper.

So far, including the milk still in the jug I'm on 477 cals.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 18:53

Sorry for those of you who are poorly ...vviola, we sometimes have hot water with lemon juice for colds. If that is too sharp for you maybe you could do a mix of orange and lemon which would bring the calorie count down.

vvviola · 27/01/2014 19:18

Oh that's a good idea Errol. DH ventured up the lemon tree yesterday so I have some lemons. I'll try that later when the herbal and black teas stop working.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 19:21

Also if you've got a lemon and ginger herbal, bunging some lemon juice in that can be pretty good.

Hi all, I haven't had a chance to catch up with the thread. I kind of fell off the wagon for a bit and into an enormous pile of cake

Much needed fast day today, I'm still due to eat some soup and I should come in at 650 cals.

Peplum41 · 27/01/2014 19:42

Hi just having a catch up whilst attempting to peddle off some visceral lard at the gym. Not eaten since 1am last night, was at work. I felt distinctly peckish before I got to the gym, but feel weirdly full now.

mazzle hope you're better soon, at least it cancels out your scoff weekend.

zed I got an awful lot of you're looking well at first. Must be a good sign. Glad you're loving it, me too!

alabaster I was 13 st 4 this time last year(im also 5 3). I lost the first stone really quickly, then the 2nd has taken since June. It's slow because I'm still a bit greedy on NFDS, but its going.

I'm trying ADF in Feb, just for the month. I'm not in a rush to lose weight, just fed up of being neither a 14 or a 16 as clothes look either too tight and just wrong, or clownish and baggy. I don't see it as sustainable long term, but a year in on 5:2, almost, I feel like a challenge. Watch this space.

toffee work have got mice, guess who I thought of?!

Peplum41 · 27/01/2014 19:46

Better just add I'm going to do some HIIT on the rowing machine before bigchoc gives me one of her looks.

Oh and hi somewhere and mummyofxx.

Clench. Drink water. Sit up straight. Rardy Rardy rah.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 19:55

Sad Hope you feel better soon MazzleDazzle.

Hope the cake was nice, Eatriskier.

I have achieved a really good fast day, come in at 398 and that is with not eating all I have logged.

Tomorrow I am making pea soup and fresh bread.

I am looking forward to feeding us all with just food that is in and not going to the shops at all this week. I suspect not including milk I could feed us all for at least 2 weeks without running out of food.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 19:58

Grin Peplum41.

Emmabryant123 · 27/01/2014 20:05

Fd fail for some reason got up and made a packed lunch :(
Two tuna mayo whole meal rolls, a banana, two cherry bakwells and two Special K bars for first break

So now fasting tomorrow but dh has told me theirs left overs in the fridge for lunch may have to shove it in freeZer of he does not take it in morning.
Doing lof till dinner then going to buy a ready meal or tin of soup. Will have to stop my self eating the cakes though at work scoffed one today bad girl

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 20:08

Positive It is very good that you can maintain your weight on 5:2
Smile
Now the maths to lose: you need a weekly calorie deficit.
With your TDEE only being 1570 cals, even if you were not over-eating, you would still only have a deficit not much over 2000 cals, instead of 3000 cals like most people.
So, even if you ate perfectly on 5:2 you would only lose about ? lb per week without exercise

You probably can NOT lose if you over-eat on a very low TDEE ^^

Very few people lose via exercise alone and they are mostly blokes with lots of muscle, exercising at a very high intensity that few women can reach. Biology is sexist.
You have very little muscle and are not sufficiently fit for massive calorie burning. Girlie weights or gentle jogging won't help and may just make you hungry. Oh BUGGER !

Exercise is good for your health, can assist weight loss and can gradually build muscle so you burn more calories.

My recommendations: ^^

  • Since you have little time and don't like exercise, cram the most you can into the shortest time: check my posts on the exercise thread for Mosely's Fast Fitness routines. No equipment or gym needed. Try to do 3 of these 10 min sessions per week and 3 of the Fast Strength routines.
  • Any Zumba or pole classes you manage are a bonus
  • Control your NFD eating so you have at least your 2000 deficit through eating. Consider adding a mini-FD to your 2 FDs ?

Sorry for nagging, but I want you to achieve your goals.
Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 20:13

Peplum41 Tell us when you've done the HIIT ^^
HIIT is the best exercise for weight loss on this WOL.
Make me proud and go for it !

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 20:15

Well done, Toffee
I'm sure you could feed the whole street out of your larder and fridge.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 20:18

Emma - we don't do fail, we do rescheduling. I am sure you could come up with something better than Special K bars for your snack though.

Thanks BCF. I am really pleased I did okay today. I wonder if it is because I ate enough yesterday.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 20:19

Hope your tummy bug goes soon, Mazzle Flowers
Fingers and toes crossed your family don't get it too
Obviously, don't attempt exercise until you are well again

TalkinPeace · 27/01/2014 20:22

Fasted today ....
the good news - 27 hours on only water and some tea
the bad news - DS decided to fix us a curry for supper and he's a good cook!
So its officially a minifast!

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 20:25

Positive - following on from BigChoc's post - if I calculate my TDEE and set my activity level as sedentary it only comes out as 1359. (is anyone else's lower?) But I am managing to gradually lose weight - better the last couple of weeks since vaguely counting cals on NFDs - but even before that I was edging down. I'm doing the 30day shred or similar first thing each weekday, plus a bit of other stuff - about half an hour, at home. Might be worth you trying it if BigChocs suggestion doesn't appeal (though that's probably better). The main thing is for you to decide what you're going to do and do it.

BsshBossh · 27/01/2014 20:26

22 hour LOF complete. About to have half a banana, an apple, a bowl of carrot & coriander soup and a slice of buttered wholemeal.

TOM this week and now I seem to have gotten DD's cold. She's off school again tomorrow but at least I have two NFDs ahead of me.

vvviola · 27/01/2014 20:30

NSV - the bathrooms and bedrooms are getting a thorough clean as I attempt to avoid the kitchen. I may not lose weight but my house will be very clean Wink

There are blueberry muffins in the cupboard as I did baking with the DC yesterday. They are taunting me.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 20:35

vvviola Well done on the cleaning.
Re singing blueberry muffin: tell it you'll have it tomorrow

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 20:44

Put the muffins in the freezer. They won't be nice at 2-3 days old.. Bets eaten day they are made ime.
