Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Hello everyone, great to read posts again - congratulations fox!

FD here again, finding it hard today - hungry! Did chomp through the choc on weekend though...so think am fancying sugar more than usual. DH was away on weekend so knackered - he is away this weekend too - aaarrr! 4 children with no help all week and 2 weekends in a row is too hard! Will try not to replace sleep with sugar (mantra...)
Just off to start peeling pots for children's tea. Am planning a crab cake and steamed greens for FD dinner - also a shred workout - hopefully before food, but at this stage, who knows! I will certainly enjoy taking some hunger frustration out on Jillian!

BetsyBell · 27/01/2014 15:57

I've been cold and tired today, not a great combo on a fast day so it's feeling like a tough one. About to get stuck into some lemon and ginger tea and put another jumper on!

Eatriskier · 27/01/2014 15:57

Extreme FD will power going on here - I managed to cut a piece of cake for DS, took the icing off before giving it to him and didn't eat the icing nor did I lick my fingers or the knife. Where's my medal Wink

TimeToPassGo · 27/01/2014 16:02

BigChoc that's interesting, thanks. Am a bit worried now as I had GD in pregnancy and HAD to restrict carbs. Does this mean I have predisposed DC to obesity? Or by being obese in pregnancy have I predisposed to obesity anyway? This is the problem with separating out cause and effect Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 16:03

Welcome, Alabaster

Folk like your neighbour who fail at 5:2 usually either can't manage the FDs or overeat (average above TDEE) on NFDs, because over-eating is what they consider "normal". A reasonably disciplined person normally succeeds - noone here is superwoman.

Hope you enjoy our WOL !

Chocupid · 27/01/2014 16:09

Eat medal worthy definitely.
FD for me today, doing well herbal tea only up to now... But I've been craving cakes all day, and I don't even like cake and am watching best bakery on TV as I type, what is going on!!!
Maybe in due TOTM.

Hope I make it without screwing up today, I need a good one my jeans are feeling tight.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2014 16:13

Time Don't worry, you were absolutely right. That's why my post said "unless medically advised".
The research suggests you shouldn't be trying to lose weight if health markers are ok, because the baby will obtain the correct nutrients. However, with GD, you had too much sugar floating about and so it was necessary, for the baby as well as you, to restrict carbs.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 16:25

Just had my first proper cup of tea today - going to try a milk ration of 150ml today, which should be enough for one while I'm making dinner and for bedtime (big mug, has to be milky).

positively9something · 27/01/2014 16:26

I'm not sure what happened I write a long post and posted it and it's not on here? Weird! Anyway what I was going to say was:

Erol - you are right I need a kick up the bum!

The only exercise class I have done and loved in pole fitness! I really want to do it but classes in my area are £15-£20 and right now money is low Hmm

I am considering buying a pole and trying to teach myself until I can spare the money!

I'm also a single parent so it can be difficult to commit to a weekly class because of childcare! I also enjoy hula hooping but my gym doesn't do classes! I have a hoop at home which I use sometimes!

When I'm feeling very motivated I don't mind Zumba and body pump but I don't love them like I do pole fitness.

Southeastdweller · 27/01/2014 16:37

Struggling a little as I’m tired and feeling impatient and a tad obsessed about my new laptop that I wanted to arrive today and still hasn’t. Only had coffee, soup and a banana and will have some sardines with veg for dinner.

Thanks to everyone who enthused last week about the butternut tea. I tracked some down the other day and really enjoyed it earlier.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2014 16:54

I think there's someone who hula hoops on the 5:2 exercise thread - maybe she could kick you in your soon-to-be-gyrating butt?

Megrim · 27/01/2014 17:01

I've been cold all day, plus trying not to think about DH who is currently on a sailing holiday in the Caribbean with his best mate. Still not too sure how he got that one past me Envy

Bumblebeejumble · 27/01/2014 17:03

Hello everyone, welcome alabaster

I did a LOF yesterday, and felt amazing! Think it might be easier for me than 500-cal FDs. Pondering on that.

I got blood test results today. I have them every two months for some medication I'm on, and I've always been normal for everything, including really good iron levels. But now, I'm only at 8, when the min. Normal level is 11.5. The only thing I've changed is this WOE. Do you think I can get enough iron if I'm fasting three times a week? I know all the stuff about broccoli, spinach, beef etc, and eating iron with vit c., but am a bit worried I'm missing out on enough if I have to essentially eat double iron on NFDs.

On the plus side, blood pressure even better, blood sugar is REALLY good, when it's always been just ok.

Bumblebeejumble · 27/01/2014 17:05

Meant to add that I swam for an hour and a half last night, managed a whole mile! And on a LOF FD! I'm claiming a win...

RavenousRunner · 27/01/2014 17:14

Bumblebeejumble do you take an iron supplement? I did this when I was vegetarian because, even knowing all the rules about ways to get iron through your diet, there would be weeks where I just didn't get everything in. I always figured better safe than sorry - I still take a multivitamin with iron a few times a week as I don't eat a lot of meat (and when DH is cooking, dark leafy greens are in short supply).

Congrats on the other stats though! Good news.

Dotty342kids · 27/01/2014 17:14

Just logging in at the (nearly!) end of a Monday fast day. Nearly caved at several points but the display on my scales at the moment (3lbs up from my lowest!) is keeping me focussed.
Veggie sausages with indian beans on toast is coming my way.......... very soon Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 27/01/2014 17:18

HNds out medals and will power to keep going.

I have just served up roast chicken, mashed potato, Yorkshires, carrot and peas with gravy. Licked the mash spoon. Kids have got fruit salad and a vanilla muffin with vanilla and chocolate buttercream on top, using my new dup icing kit. I have no desire really to have one Shock.

I am looking forward to a hotch potch dinner - rice, mushrooms, prawns and spring greens with some coleslaw. I know it sounds awful but I refuse to food shop this week as I have more food in that Waitrose and no money. I have put the left over mash in the fridge to have tomorrow. .

Chocupid · 27/01/2014 17:19

bumble I'm considering a LOF today, (only had herbal tea up to now)
I think if I start eating I may not stop...
So same as you I think it may be easier... Question though, could you count cuppa soup as a liquid I wonder?

RavenousRunner · 27/01/2014 17:24

Bit of a NSV for me - I am finding it much easier to pick the healthy options when eating out, which I have to do a lot at lunchtime. Today I could have had spag bol with herbed focaccia and salad, which did look good, but was very happy with roasted sea bass on a weird little spinach cake and some broccoli, and roasted pears for dessert. Sandwiches don't appeal in the slightest on days I have to feed myself, as I know I'll feel awful afterwards. Every time I can make a choice like that I feel as though I've just banked some calories for the time two weeks from now when we make lasagne or something on a Saturday. But I also know that I probably couldn't eat more than one piece. Hurrahs!

Bumblebeejumble · 27/01/2014 17:59

chocupid, bigchoc helpfully suggested that if you have a max of 50 cals in a day, it counts as a LOF (apparently that little won't spike your blood sugar...). That's what I stuck to, actually a bit less (had 50ml skimmed milk and a berocca, so 35cal). Worked for me.

ravenous yes, I've been prescribed supplements, I was just wondering about the long-term implications. Are we missing out on vitamins and minerals if we're under eating regularly? I don't want to have to take tablets forever!

Chocupid · 27/01/2014 18:13

Thanks bumble that's me buggered then! just had a cuppa soup will do a low cal FD instead.

RavenousRunner · 27/01/2014 18:18

Bumblebeejumble I don't think one is necessarily missing out on vitamins and minerals - at least for me, what gets cut out of my diet are things like crisps, biscuits etc which have basically no nutritional value. I end up eating far more veg and lean meat/fish, because they have a lot of nutrition for far fewer calories. So it should be possible to do it naturally I expect.

MazzleDazzle · 27/01/2014 18:20

Uurgh! Tummy bug here Sad. Just me so far. Hopefully the kids won't get it (crosses her fingers desperately).

'matcha'? Haven't heard of it, but will keep a look out. Green tea is caffeine free, isn't it? Presume the hit would be full of anti-oxidants.

Lovely to see some newbies! Hello and welcome. I've been doing this for a month and it's going well.

Had a bit of a scoff at the weekend though Blush and not exercised since Fri. Was supposed to have a class this morning, but the bug put a stop to that.

It's been a FD here, which hasn't been too difficult what with being poorly and all. Feel a lot better than I did this morning though, so hoping to be all better by tomorrow.

Haven't been keeping up with thread, something which I think is key to success, so that's this week's goal!

Eatriskier · 27/01/2014 18:22

Well I got to 18:15 before I gave into the cake. I blame DD.

ShyGirlie · 27/01/2014 18:34

FD 6 here. Gotta admit im like a ravenous bear!!! Soup for linch at 1.00. Really trying to hold out til 8.30 for my goats cheese, courgette and red onion omelette.
